Abstract:
The effectiveness of four different learning sequences in teaching juggling to 5th grade students was investigated. Practice schedules using combinations of scarves, weighted scarves, beanbags, and balls allowed both identical task elements and learners' time-on-task to be varied during a 3-wk. practice period. The exclusive use of beanbags for practice, prior to testing with balls, resulted in significantly better juggling scores than did the other combinations. While transfer of training occurred for other groups, the amount of students' time-on-task during practice appeared to be a strong influence on final performance.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to Mari wedding scarves, their constructive and decorative properties and ceremonial role. The rich collections of the Russian Museum of Ethnography include various types of towel products from a traditional Mari wedding and serve as the material for this research. Consideration of the design and decorative features of the bride’s wedding veils, wedding headscarves and waist scarves, as well as of their use during the wedding ceremony, allow us to draw conclusions about the diversity of both local forms and the ways they function. The article examines the connection between headdresses and wedding shawls, analyzes their functions as well as the relationship to their decorative features. Headscarves are considered both as part of the costumes of actors performing symbolic functions and as a tool of ceremonial action, in particular, in practices of giving and exchange. This research, based mainly on artefacts of the late 19 th - early 20 th century, is promising from the point of view of studying the current state of tradition. Field research shows that despite external modification scarves still play an important role in Mari weddings.

YEMETS, O., and M. HAVRYLIUK. "CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR OF FAMILY AND LOVE IN CONTEMPORARY SHORT STORIES: LINGUISTIC AND TRANSLATION ASPECTS." Current issues of linguistics and translations studies, no. 25 (September 30, 2022): 14–19. http://dx.doi.org/10.31891/2415-7929-2022-25-3.

Full text
Abstract:
The article considers the language means of verbalization of conceptual metaphors “Family” and “Love” in the contemporary short stories of the British and American writers. The investigation also involves determining the principles and the algorithm of rendering these conceptual metaphors in translation. Concepts are defined as mental structures used by a person in the process of thinking. Concepts in fiction are called artistic concepts. They are verbalized with the help of lexical and stylistic devices and are represented by conceptual metaphors. Conceptual analysis helps to characterize the key concept in the text of fiction, and, at the same time, such analysis can be a good criterion for assessing the quality of literary translation. In this paper, we suggest four stages of conceptual analysis in translation. The first stage includes defining the main concept in the text; the second involves formulating the conceptual metaphor (CM) in the text; determining the lexical and stylistic means of verbalization of the CM. The third stage consists in the text translation and editing, and the fourth-in the comparison of the source and target texts. At the first stage, it is also necessary to consider how the key text concept is represented in the folklore, proverbs, and aphorisms. Our investigation focuses on the concepts of “Family” and “Love”, therefore we chose several famous proverbs as the illustration of these concepts: As the twig is bent, so the tree is inclined; Men build houses, women build homes; A mother’s heart is always with her children. The major concept in the short story “Oliver’s Evolution” by John Updike is: “Family”, and the two microconcepts are “Father” and “Son”. The main character Oliver was growing as a weak boy, vulnerable to different injuries and misfortunes. But when he became an adult and had a family, he started feeling responsibility for his children and his wife, he became the support of his children. The main CM is verbalized by means of the extended metaphor and gradation and can be formulated as FATHER IS THE TREE FOR HIS CHIDREN. Another story “My Mother’s Many Scarves”, published in August 2022, is an example of flash fiction stories, two-three pages long, usually with a very important ending. The concept “Family” includes two microconcepts – “Mother” and “Daughter”. The author Andree Guedron describes the relations of love and understanding between the mother and the daughter. The narrator’s mother liked scarves, and her daughter inherited different things from her: brooches, jewelry. But most valuable was a bag of scarves which the mother bought in different countries. The concept is verbalized, first of all, by numerous repetitions of the noun scarf. The scarves become a metonymic detail, a symbol in the story. That is why the main conceptual metaphor of the text can be formulated as MOTHER’S SCARVES ARE SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE. The daughter realizes that she inherited from the mother not only material things, but also spiritual traits, behavior, emotions. At the same time, the concept “Love” is also realized in this story, as love of the daughter to her mother. Another short story where this concept is actualized is “Bigfoot Love” by E. Gary. It is a fantastic and allegoric story of love of a man and an ape, and the major CM can be formulated as LOVE IS A BIG FORCE. This conceptual metaphor is verbalized with the help of such stylistic devices as hyperbole and extended metaphor. In translation, two major strategies were used to retain the aesthetic and stylistic effect: retaining the conceptual model with the same language expression; retaining the conceptual models with somewhat different linguistic expression, with the use of such translation techniques as synonymic substitution and modulation.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the Leningrad artistic textiles, created in the 1960s–1990s. It is well known, that tapestry was actively developing during this period, however, this article discusses both original and industrial designs, which were represented by printed and shaft weaving fabrics, and textile haberdashery. Unique and industrial textiles have evolved with varying degrees of intensity, while fabrics and scarves remain the least explored area of design practice. In most cases, patterns for scarves had a souvenir design. The author gives data on the main industrial enterprises which produced them, points to the inseparable connection with the Leningrad school of textiles, which was based at the department of textiles at the Vera Mukhina Leningrad Higher School of Industrial Art. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the development of tapestry in the Leningrad school of textiles became possible after the opening of internships in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Latvia. The experience of learning about modern European tapestry formed two main trends in Leningrad: traditional and relief-plastic. In each of them were created outstanding works. This article provides information about tapestries and curtains made in the Leningrad Decorative and Applied Arts Factory and Research Experimental Workshops. The scale and high quality of the works are noted, the prominent artists who worked by the «order of the state» (goszakaz) are listed.

Abstract:
Fabrics have always been a means of expressing cultural heritage. We can often identify different cultures and countries by the fabrics used in garments worn by their people. For example, garments made from kenta cloth, with its bold colors and designs, identify people from Africa or of African descent. Tartan plaids found in kilts and scarves identify people from Scotland, as well as the clan or family with which the wearer is associated. Kimonos displaying colorful flowers, birds, and other phenomena of nature identify people from Asian-Pacific countries, such as Japan. These fabrics are beautiful in and of themselves, but they also give us an opportunity to examine various cultures and mathematical concepts, including patterns, geometric shapes, and spatial reasoning.

This research aims to evaluate the sales accounting information system applied by the Kelana Scarves Shop using the PIECES (Performance, Information, Economy, Control, Eficiency dan Service) analysis method. The research used descriptive qualitative research with a case study approach. The data collection techniques include observation, interview, and documentation. The data analysis uses data reduction, data presentation, and analysis using the PIECES method. According to the PIECES method, the results show that the users are satisfied with using the Olsera POS system. However, the results also indicate there is still a double job in terms of efficiency related to assigning tasks and responsibilities. There is still no optimal service to consumers in the service aspect because the employee ignores the updated information of inventory in the marketplace and the warehouse. Therefore, they can disappoint consumers who want to buy the needed goods

In political and popular debates, bans on the wearing of Islamic head scarves and veils are often said to be necessary for the promotion of gender equality. In this article, I argue that this is based on a stereotypical view of Islam and of Muslim women which ignores the many different reasons why women wear headscarves and veils. I also argue that bans are unnecessary and even counterproductive to achieving gender equality. For those women who wear these garments because they freely choose to do so, bans are not necessary to promote their equality. For those women who are pressured into wearing headscarves or veils, bans could well work against promoting their equality, because they could prevent them from getting an education and a job and could lead to their isolation from society.

This has increased the need for textile producers, especially artisan textile makers (e.g., knitters, tailors, dressmakers, seamstresses, and quilters), to improve the quality of their textile products. Information on several analytical tools that are commonly used for assessing the quality of textiles is abundant, but consumer-based tools for evaluating the quality of textiles remain limited. A consumer-based artisan textile-quality scale was developed using data collected from two focus groups (Phase 1) and a consumer quantitative study, n = 196 (Phase 2). Ten scarves and shawls were evaluated in the quantitative study and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the differences between the mean textile ratings for all the statements. Coefficient alpha (final raw alpha = 0.87) was also used to assess if the statements were consistent in the way they measured the quality of the textiles. Pearson correlation tests were used to validate the six-statement quality scale that included statements such as overall attention to detail, the fabric is durable, and stitching is even and consistent. Artisan textile makers in the USA can use this scale to better meet the functional needs of their customers. Additionally, the process that was employed in the development of the six-statement quality scale can be used by researchers in other countries to understand better the key quality characteristics of artisan as well other textile products.

Abstract:
This study was conducted on an online business in Cimahi called Desire & Co, which sells outer scarves with various motifs that can be selected or ordered according to the desired motif. Observation results show that there are several problems faced by this business, namely promotion on social media that is less consistent, lack of capital to advertise, poor quality product photos, and lack of human resources. This business is still implementing the red ocean strategy because it is relatively new and has many competitors. Observation of the running of the business is done by making a questionnaire and asking the owners and employees and used as a method of collecting data for this research. The solution that has been given is to use the hookle application so that promotions are consistent, optimize product photos on social media as an advertising platform and expand advertisements to various other social media.

Abstract:
This paper is about two researchers’ journey of enlivening the vitality of data from observation of young children’s play with scarves in a mixed-age classroom of 3- and 4-year-olds, by diffractively analyzing data with/through philosophical theories. Researchers endeavored to understand how the encounter with the observer, material agency of a scarf, memories and desires of young children, and discovered that socioculturally constructed meanings were all entangled to generate, disperse, connect, disconnect, and enfold heterogeneous spacetimes and material-discursive plays. Diffractive methodology was adopted to reassemble data while diffracting and intra-acting with theories of Foucault, Deleuze, and Barad. The vitality of play observation data was also entangled with the researchers toward spacetimemattering of data diffracted in-between multiple theories and practices, researchers’ past-present-future, an early childhood classroom and a graduate school classroom, human and non-human, along with our iteratively drawing/blurring their boundaries, and making new connections. We suggest the thinking-with-theory-data would open doors to illuminating the entanglements of space, time, materials, and meanings embedded in the play observation data.

Abstract:
Sportswear market, normally by slinky legging, crop tops and close-fitting apparel. (Viktoria Hermann, 2022). Recently, the value of sports hijabs in global modest fashion has been growing over the past few year about $368 billion (Hafsa Lodi, 2020). Traditional hijabs vary from basic scarves to intricate multi-layered pieces, offering a fluid silhoutte that covers the head and neck entirely. However, during various athletic activities, these garments can easily slip off or get caught, possing both a modesty concern and a safety risk for the user. In contrast, sports hijabs maintain the same level of coverage but have a snugger and more secure fit. (Palmer G.D., 2023). Objective of this research is to idenfity the aesthetic value design, features and function of each sports hijab designs in the market. The researcher conducted observations and analyses on two (2) distinct local brand who are focusing in sports hijabs. This paper aims to determine the visual aethetic design of sports hijabs by evaluating and comparing between international and local sportswear brand in various aspects including details, features and materials.

Abstract:
Abstract. Ulos sadum is a Batak woven fabric that was originally known in Angkola/South Tapanuli as a symbol of joy with its characteristic red color and festive floral motifs that have cultural significance through the Batak tradition, and can contain magical, religious, love, unity and prayer values. The development of the times has an impact on the ulos phenomenon is not used in accordance with the function, motifs and meaning of ulos because it is starting to erode and can threaten the extinction of the ulos which makes people worry, especially for the Toba Batak sphere. This study aims to examine the functions, motifs, and symbolic meanings contained in the Toba Batak ulos sadum. This research is a type of qualitative research. The approach used is semiotics. The sources of data in this study were ulos weavers, experts in the field of ulos (ulos observers, ulos business actors, lecturers of cultural studies), literature, and ulos. Data collection techniques used are literature studies, observations, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used is the theoretical data analysis of Miles and Huberman namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion/verification. The results showed that the function of the Toba Batak personal sadum was to be used by women as ulos holong (love), a symbol of joy and prayer for the wearer or daughters who are currently married, and to show the beauty of women from their work. The physical function is for scarves, long cloths/slings, back cover and gifts. The social function is for happy and sad events such as mangulosi , house inauguration, baptisms, child births, church birthdays and funerals. The function of the community in the past was that it was used for daily activities, scarves and traditional events. The function in today's society is still the same as before but has been modernized, namely the development of sadum patterned fabrics into souvenirs such as wall hangings, tablecloths, bags, clothing, skirts, accessories and others. Some sadum motifs come from Dutch and India acculturation. The motifs describe animals and nature in the Batak land. The distribution of motifs on the Toba Batak ulos sadum is Toba Silindung, Toba Samosir, Toba Holbung/Uluan and Toba Sitolu Huta. The overall symbolic meaning contained in the Toba Batak ulos sadum, namely the joy and social relations of humans and the surrounding nature is translated from the meaning contained in each motif that forms a single unit. This cloth in custom is called ulos holong (love), which expresses affection, joy and prayer to give dynamism to the community.

Abstract:
This article examines the appearances and dress of SoundCloud rappers, a highly popular subgenre of American hip hop music, which shifted from homemade music to the mainstream in 2016. SoundCloud rappers wear clothes usually associated with hybrid masculinity, such as fluffy pink hoodies, silk scarves and frilly shirts. In contrast, although not lacking in style, rappers usually embody an idealized heteronormative masculinity, played out through manly affect, which is often expressed through baggy sports clothing and oversized gold jewellery. Despite Black masculinity being historically defined through stylish, interesting and ostentatious clothes, these looks have been rejected by traditional rappers for fear of association with more hybrid masculinity. The transformation in cultural production through participatory culture, allowing for different male identities to be expressed notwithstanding, masculinity in hip hop has been very slow to change. Using the concept of the dandy, this article examines the ways in which certain SoundCloud rappers have embraced ostentation in clothing, despite a significant backlash from their peers. Moreover, we suggest that SoundCloud rappers have pushed the boundaries of clothing for a new generation of queer Black rappers, arguably, paving the way for looks which are ‘beyond belief’.

Abstract:
Western Permian Komi lived in the Orlovsky district of the Vyatka province, and their ethnic culture revealed a series of features and similarities with other communities of the Komi and neighboring peoples. The article analyzes the costume complexes of this ethnic group. A bright page in the history of material culture is represented by the traditional women's costume at the “historical turning point”, i.e. in the 1920s. Its early version includes a magpie headdress, a shirt with slanting Cumack rugs, a straight sleeve with longitudinal embroidery, a red Kosoklinny sarafan, a belt, an apron, beads with Kauri shells and glass beads, double-sided copper earrings and rings, and nasal jewelry. Kosoklinny sarafans from purchased red fabric or blue dyed canvas were decorated with a green woolen cord laid in a stylized tree on the chest and in the centre of the hem in front. The back was decorated with braid sewn above the shoulder blades. The later version includes shirts with yokes, like the Russians in the Veliko-Ustyug district had, and straight pest-row sarafans, like in the middle Vyatka region. Headdresses, scarves, aprons and belts were reproduced in the old way.

Abstract:
Lao People’s Democratic Republic is a multicultural country within the Association of South East Asian Nations. It recently adopted the Intellectual Property Law in the context of enhancing regional and global economic integration. The traditional handicraft textile sector is important in Laos. It is of benefit to the country’s economic development, as well as being recognized as an important element of both national culture and the identity of Lao women. However, Lao craftswomen are facing a strong challenge preserving their traditional knowledge due to the extremely cheap imitations of items such as scarves and Lao skirts, which are being sold in Laos. This article aims to discuss the existing international instruments and related national laws regarding intellectual property and protection of traditional knowledge with particular regard to women’s rights. Intellectual property and traditional knowledge issues attract more attention than intellectual property rights under the World Intellectual Property Organization regime; unesco, trips, cbd and human rights treaties, all to which Lao is a party, are also relevant. Nationally, Laos is still lacking adequate and appropriate means to protect rights of women as traditional knowledge holders in terms of national laws.

Abstract:
One area where cultures clash is education. Over the years, we have been witness to such movements as ‘English Only’ in the US (originating in California and Florida, but now operating in a number of other states as well), or the acrimonious European disputes over how much of ‘foreign’ culture can be allowed into the school’s environment (head scarves on the playgrounds, religious symbols like crosses worn around the neck, prayer in the classrooms, and not least use of other languages than the ‘official’ one in teaching and socializing). Pragmatics, by placing the emphasis on the users of language in culture, defuses the potentially explosive elements in such clashes by stressing the need to respect the individual’s options in face of the collective cultural pressure. This is especially important in an area such as education, where schools have historically been used to propagate the ‘domestic’ culture over other cultures, the latter being considered as foreign imports. In a pragmatic view of education, teachers and students should be culture sharers, rather than the former considering themselves exclusively as the rightful owners and proprietary protectors of a culture along with its language

Abstract:
During the last few years, many algorithms have been proposed in particular for face recognition using classical 2-D images. However, it is necessary to deal with occlusions when the subject is wearing sunglasses, scarves and such. In the same way, ear recognition is arising as a new promising biometric for people recognition, even if the related literature appears to be somewhat underdeveloped. In this paper, several hybrid face/ear recognition systems are investigated. The system is based on IFS (Iterated Function Systems) theory that are applied on both face and ear resulting in a bimodal architecture. One advantage is that the information used for the indexing and recognition task of face/ear can be made local, and this makes the method more robust to possible occlusions. The distribution of similarities in the input images is exploited as a signature for the identity of the subject. The amount of information provided by each component of the face and the ear image has been assessed, first independently and then jointly. At last, results underline that the system significantly outperforms the existing approaches in the state of the art.
