Abstract:
Routine pregnancy screening (e.g. ultrasound scan) may lead unexpectedly to the identification of an underlying renal problem whose aetiology may not be apparent immediately. It is important to recognize genetic causes so that associated problems in other organs can be anticipated and the recurrence risk for future pregnancies established. Specific diagnosis at a cytogenetic or molecular level may be essential if the options of early prenatal diagnosis or pre-implantation genetic diagnosis are to be available to the couple in future pregnancies. This chapter discusses the topics of antenatal s

Abstract:
Doppler examination is an integral part of the echocardiogram. Current systems are equipped with spectral Doppler in continuous wave mode (offering measurements of high velocities with limited spatial specificity due to integration of signal along the scan line), pulsed wave mode (high spatial specificity with maximal recordable velocity reduced by the Nyquist limit), and colour Doppler flow mapping (allowing rapid identification of flow pattern within a cross-sectional B-mode sector). Tissue Doppler echocardiography emerged as a basic tool for sampling regional myocardial velocities, in pulse

Abstract:
The aim of diagnostic studies in patients with haemoptysis is two-fold—locate the source of bleeding and identify the underlying cause. A chest X-ray may be informative regarding conditions involving the lung parenchyma, pulmonary vasculature, or the heart, but may be normal in 20–40% of cases. A chest CT scan may allow correct localization of the bleeding site in 65–100% of cases. Contrast-enhanced CT scans allow high resolution angiographic studies that may be useful prior to planning bronchial arterial embolization. Bronchoscopy may allow identification of the site of bleeding, identify the
