Based on cluster analysis, a novel method is introduced in this paper to generate multistage scenarios. A linear programming model is proposed to exclude the arbitrage opportunity by appending a scenario to the generated scenario set. By means of a cited stochastic linear goal programming portfolio model, a case is given to exhibit the virtues of this scenario generation approach.

This paper formulates a new time–cost trade-off problem under some uncertainties for a multi-phase project. To do this, a new approach is proposed based on goal programming in compliance with scenario-based stochastic optimization formulation. To the best of our knowledge, this problem has not been extensively treated in the literature. Computational results show the applicability and usefulness of the proposed method.

The inherent random and intermittence of the renewable energy resources pose a huge challenge to the Microgrid (MG) energy management systems (EMS). In order to mitigate the effects of uncertainties, we propose a novel two-stage stochastic programming model for the energy scheduling optimization by considering the uncertainties in solar and wind generation, and the plug-in electric vehicles (EV). The random nature of uncertainty is characterized by a scenarios generation approach based on autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model according to probability density function of each random variab

Asset and Liability Management (ALM) models have become well established decision tools for pension funds. ALMs are commonly modelled as multi-stage, in which a large terminal wealth is required, while at intermediate time periods, constraints on the funding ratio, that is, the ratio of assets to liabilities, are imposed. Underfunding occurs when the funding ratio is too low; a target value for funding ratios is pre-specified by the decision maker. The risk of underfunding has been usually modelled by employing established risk measures; this controls one single aspect of the funding ratio dis

Each node in the framework has control of an optimization model which may include stochastic parameters, and the nodes must coordinate toward a single objective in which a single optimal or c

Abstract:
In this chapter, we present the multistage stochastic programming framework for sequential decision making under uncertainty. We discuss its differences with Markov Decision Processes, from the point of view of decision models and solution algorithms. We describe the standard technique for solving approximately multistage stochastic problems, based on a discretization of the disturbance space called scenario tree. We insist on a critical issue of the approach; the decisions can be very sensitive to the parameters of the scenario tree, whereas no efficient tool for checking the quality of approximate solutions exists. In this chapter, we show how supervised learning techniques can be used to evaluate reliably the quality of an approximation, and thus facilitate the selection of a good scenario tree. The framework and solution techniques presented in the chapter are explained and detailed on several examples. Along the way, we define notions from decision theory that can be used to quantify, for a particular problem, the advantage of switching to a more sophisticated decision model.

Abstract:
This journal article deals with the problem of real-time scheduling of operating systems (OS) tasks by a hybrid genetic-based scheduling algorithm. Indeed, most of real-time systems are framed with aid of priority-based scheduling algorithms. Nevertheless, when such a scenario is applied to save the system at the occurrence of hardware-software faults, or to improve its performance, some real-time properties can be violated at run-time. In contrast, most of the applications of real-time systems are based on timing constraints, i.e. OS tasks should be scheduled properly to finish their execution within the time specified by the real-time systems. For this reason, the authors propose in their article, a hybrid genetic-based scheduling approach that automatically checks the systems feasibility after any reconfiguration scenario was applied to an embedded system. A benchmark example is given, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the originally proposed genetic-based scheduling approach over other such classical genetic algorithmic approaches.

Abstract:
Multi-Agent System (MAS) is a suitable programming paradigm for simulating and modeling health care systems and applications, where resources, data, control and services are widely distributed. We have developed a multi-agent software prototype to simulate the activities and roles inside a health care system. The prototype is developed using a framework called Role-based Agent Development Environment (RADE). In this chapter, the authors present an integrated approach for modeling, designing and implementing a multi-agent health care simulation system using RADE. They describe the definition of role classes and agent classes, as well as the automatic agent generation process. The authors illustrate the coordination problem and present a rule-based coordination approach. In the end, they present a runtime scenario of this health care simulation system, which demonstrates that dynamic task allocation can be achieved through the creation of role instances and the mapping from role instances to agents. This scenario also explains how agents coordinate their activities given their local constraints and interdependence among distributed tasks.

Rain is a complex phenomenon and its simulation is usually very costly. In this article, the authors propose a fully-GPU rain simulation based on the utilization of particle systems. The flexibility of CUDA allows the authors to include, aside from the rainfall simulation, a system for the detection and handling of the collisions of particles against the scenario. This detection system allows for the simulation of splashes at the same time. This system obtains a very high performance because of the hardware programming capabilities of CUDA.
