Abstract:
This thesis aims at studying and giving an appreciation of the importance of characters'misconceptions in the first major novels of george eliot. It concentrates on her works in litterature between 1857 and 1861. Characters are often misconceived in their ways and their misconceptions are both individual and social. Behaviour is individual, but is also the result of a particular education. George eliot remained faithful to the litterary conventions of her time in this first partof her carreer. This can be seen in her characterisation but she was able to show how great goals could be achieved. The struggle of her characters to accomplish their aims, the dramatisation of their achievements and failures are registered under the title of "misconceptions". Like the ancient greek heroes, some characters in these first novels by george eliot are really fighting against a destiny. The nineteenth century background is a good setting especially as far as britain is concerned. The misconceptions of characters are therefore the ways in which a writer can show her treatment of man in his developing social environment. Misconceptions are very good clues to unspoken ideas

Abstract:
This study examines the practical and political implications of sympathy as a mode of achieving the intercommunicative relationship between the self and the other, emphasizing the significance of subjective agency not simply guided by the imperative category of morality but mainly enacted by a hybrid of discourses through the interaction between the two entities. Scenes of Clerical Life, Eliot's first fictional narrative on illuminating the intertwining relation of religion to secular conditions of life, reveals that the essence of religion is the practice of love between the self and the other derived from sympathy and invoked by their dialogic discourses of confession which enable them to foster the communality, on the grounds that the alterity implicated in the narrative of the other summons and re-historicizes the narrative of the subject's traumatic event in the past. Romola, Eliot's historical novel, highlights the performativity of subject which, on the one hand, locates Romola outside the social frame of domination and appropriation as a way of challenging the universalizing discourses of morality and duty sanctioned by the patriarchal ideology of norms, religion, and marriage. On the other hand, the heroine re-engages herself inside the social structure as a response to other's need for help by substantiating her compassion for others in action. Felix Holt, the Radical, Eliot's political and industrial novel, investigates the limits of moral discourse and instrumental reason. Esther employs her strategy of hybridizing her aesthetic and moral tastes in order to debilitate masculine desires for moral inculcation and material calculation. Esther reinvigorates her subjectivity by simultaneously internalizing and externalizing a hybrid of tastes. In effect, the empowerment of her subjectivity is designed not only to provide others with substantial help from the promptings of her sympathy for them, but also to fulfill her romantic plot of marriage.

Abstract:
I present here a sequence of short videos, Scenes of Provincial Life, forming a unified, ongoing online work. In my written commentary I discuss the work‘s context, genesis and facture and presentation and thereby demonstrate its claim to originality as art work. I go on to suggest one possible interpretive framework for it. I then discuss the nature of art works as candidates for the generation of new knowledge and conclude that art works in general fulfil this function, in a very carefully defined way, as a necessary condition of being art works. I further connect the success of any work as art work with the richness of its knowledge generating capacity, inseparably allied to its aesthetic force. I conclude that if Scenes of Provincial Life is seen to have value as artwork it will therefore by definition be a creator of new knowledge.

Full text
Abstract:
The effects of transformations in the cultural context on the structures of the Catholic organization and consequently on the identity and role of priests is explored in this research. The way these transformations affect clergy relationships with the church, diocesan authorities and parishioners, and ultimately the psychological wellbeing of priests, are investigated in the light of recent research and literature. Quantitative and qualitative data from the Catholic Church Life Surveys (CCLS) of 1996 and 2001 is analyzed, together with qualitative data generated through semi-structured interviews. The theoretical underpinning for the interpretation of changing clerical identity and roles and the relationship dynamics is personality theory, including a neoanalytic model (Horney, 1950), and a psychodynamic approach using an iconic reading of Freud (Cozzens, 2000). Social identity theory (Haslam, 2001), and Fowler’s (1996) theory of faith development also contribute to the theoretical framework. The NEO-FFI personality factors (Costa & McCrae, 1992) are used as covariates throughout the analysis. Four major themes are addressed in this research. First, ambiguities in the identity and role of clergy brought about through structural changes in the organization following the Second Vatican Council. Second, cultural changes which challenged the institutional hierarchical structure of the church and some of its theological and ecclesiological positions. Third, the contribution to satisfaction with ministry and personal wellbeing made by priests’ relationships with the organization, diocesan authorities, and parishioners, as well as intimacy with colleagues and friends. Finally, the impact of psychodynamic factors on the spiritual and psychological dimensions of priestly life. It was found that although the sacramental role of priests remains largely intact, their identity as religious and spiritual leaders is under challenge through greater participation in parish life by educated and theologically trained lay people. It is argued that the competence to appropriately express leadership, preach meaningful homilies and promote spiritual growth in parishioners rests on the attainment of mature psychological development and continued faith and spiritual formation. Analysis of personality factors showed that sound organizational and structural supports are needed to assist priests in their personal and professional lives. Over half the priests in the present study were found to be vulnerable to emotional and psychological distress, while others had strong resources to cope with increased ambiguity and complexity in ministry. A review of literature suggests that cultural changes over the last 30 years compound the effects of Vatican II, particularly the patriarchal hierarchical structure of the organisation and teachings on sexual morality that are under pressure from changing attitudes by both clergy and laity. Quantitative and qualitative analyses showed that there is little support by priests for the obligation of celibacy, the successful attainment of which demands a high level of mature psychosexual development. It was argued that without a strong clerical commitment to celibacy, education and training programs currently being implemented in seminaries would be largely ineffectual. Key factors impacting on the relationships of priests with parishioners were found to be first, a decline in the authority of priests, second, the revelations of sexual abuse by priests, and third, the difficulty numbers of clergy have with establishing and maintaining close, intimate relationships. The NEO-FFI factors Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Agreeableness were found to be significant predictors in the quality of relationships between priests and parishioners, with 30% of clergy experiencing difficulty in these relationships. It was argued that maturity in spiritual, psychological, and psychosexual development was found to impact significantly on clergy personal wellbeing and professional competence, which in turn contributes to satisfaction with ministry.

Hartman, Nadia. "The impact of computerisation on clerical work in the finance sector : case studies of two large life assurance companies in the Western Cape, 1955-1985." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/15842.

Full text
Abstract:
The association of microelectronics and the office and its consequences specifically for life assurance companies is the central focus of this thesis. The original intention was to survey the impact of computerisation on clerical work in the Finance Sector, focusing specifically on banks, building societies and life assurance companies. The Finance Sector was chosen because it is the largest employer of clerical workers after the civil service and was also the most advanced user of computers in commerce. A survey of the literature on computerisation and clerical work revealed that a comparison of job categories prior to and following computerisation was necessary if the full impact of the technology was to be assessed. However, after several months of research it became evident that a comparison of job categories in the pre- and post-computer eras in all parts of the Finance Sector - banks, building societies and assurance companies - would make for an impossibly long exercise in the thesis if all were researched comparably. It was decided to concentrate on two very large life assurance companies in South Africa who were among the first to computerise in the country. Comparability was enhanced by the fact that both company headquarters were in Cape Town and therefore accessible for in-depth and repeated interviewing. This together with the fact that the companies were among the largest employers of clerical labour in the Western Cape made the choice natural and inevitable.

Fredman, Jenny. ""All autobiography is storytelling, all writing is autobiography" : Autobiography and the Theme of Otherness in J.M. Coetzee's Boyhood: Scenes from Provincial Life." Thesis, Växjö University, School of Humanities, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:vxu:diva-1359.

Full text
Abstract:

Boyhood: Scenes from provincial life by J.M. Coetzee tells the story about John Coetzee from the age of ten until thirteen. Since many details in the story point to the idea that the protagonist might be the author, it is often said to be an autobiography. However, it is not a conventional one. A third person narrator tells the story in the present tense, which is rather different from the autobiographiy’s conventional first person narrator speaking in the past tense. The definition used in order to define the genre to which Boyhood belongs is Lejeune’s criterion author=narrator=protagonist. According to this theory, Boyhood is a biography. However, Lejeune does not take the connection author=protagonist inte sonsideration, but focuses only on the connection narrator=protagonist. Thus an additional description of the text’s generic style must be used.

Furthermore, the theme of otherness is analysed. A close reading of the novel shows that the protagonist often feels different from his family and peers. He makes a distinction between two kinds of different – a good and a bad kind. The good means that he is better than his peers, and the bad kind means that he has failed to accomplish something he thinks is important.

Although the author wrote the story about his boyhood in a rather unconventional style and the protagonist perceives himself as different, the otherness in the two do not parallel each other. What they might have in common is perfectionism. Thus, the theme of otherness is only to be found in the protagonist, whereas the author’s style of writing is merely unconventional.

Kvasova, Daria 1989. "The Role of cross-modal semantic interactions in real-world visuo-spatial attention." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/668665.

Full text
Abstract:
In our everyday life we must effectively orient attention to relevant objects and events in multisensory environments. The impact of cross-modal links for attention orienting to spatial and temporal cues has been widely described. However, real-life scenarios provide a rich web of semantic information through the different sensory modalities. Despite some previous studies have revealed an impact of crossmodal sematic correspondences, the results are mixed with regard to the conditions in which audiovisual semantic congruence can influence attention orienting. Furthermore, the vast majority of the research on crossmodal semantics used simple, stereotyped displays that are far from achieving ecological validity. The present thesis attempts to close this gap by addressing the role of identity-based crossmodal relationships on attention orienting in scenarios closer to real-world conditions. To this end, the experiments presented here attempt to extrapolate and generalize previous findings in more realistic environments by using naturalistic and dynamic stimuli, and address the theoretical questions of task relevance and perceptual load. The outcome of the three empirical studies in this thesis lead to several conclusions. First, that the effect of audio-visual semantic congruence on attention is not strictly automatic. Instead, they suggest that some top-down processing is necessary for audio-visual semantic congruence to trigger spatial orienting. The second conclusion to emerge is that crossmodal semantic congruence can guide attention under goal-directed conditions in visual search, and also under free observation in complex and dynamic scenes. Third, that perceptual load is a limiting factor for these interactions. These findings extend previous knowledge on object-based crossmodal interactions with simple stimuli and clarify how audio-visual semantically congruent relationships play out in realistic scenarios.

Abstract:
This study explores the Portland music scene as a context in which local identity is constructed and communicated in a globalized world. Specifically, neo-localism is utilized as a theoretical lens through which the impacts of globalization were explored. Portland bands (n=8) were interviewed concerning their experiences in the local music scene. The results showed that participants conceptualized local identity as being 1) based in community, 2) culturally saturated and 3) connected to musical production. Further, results showed that participants were increasingly aware of this local identity, were aware of a global perception of this local identity and were aware of other local identities. Overall the results from this study support neo-localism as a useful conceptual lens for understanding local identity for Portland bands.

Abstract:

Goldstone, Brian David. "The Miraculous Life: Scenes from the Charismatic Encounter in Northern Ghana." Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10161/5530.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation examines the recent influx of Pentecostal-charismatic churches into the Northern Region of Ghana, a rural, underdeveloped region whose predominantly Muslim population has increasingly become the target of evangelistic efforts undertaken by Christians from the south. Based on ethnographic and archival research, my study considers the locus of this incursion as a densely layered zone of anxieties and emergences, desires and contestations, in which the elaboration of novel horizons of sensibility and experience is refracted through the vicissitudes of the region's social, economic, religious, and political history. I argue that the churches' impassioned campaign to "take back the north for the Lord" - a campaign whose exemplary medium is the evangelistic crusade in which "signs and wonders" are mobilized as particularly potent technologies of conversion - demarcates a complex field of intervention animated by a plurality of forces irreducible to those of strictly religious provenance. An ethos of progress and success fostered by the country's development apparatus; the longstanding prejudices surrounding northerners and "the north" in the Ghanaian national imaginary; the specter of a Muslim threat that surfaces in a post-9/11 world and perpetuates amidst a global war on terror - these are among the contingencies that have come together to render this encounter possible. Yet, far from simply overlaying these historical-political logics with the veneer of Christian discourse, my work charts the dissemination of a faith whereby, through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, converts are anointed with a power to conceive themselves and, by extension, the world as nothing less than a totally "new creation." I contend that such practices of salvation, so characteristic of Pentecostalism's proliferation across the continent as a whole, are being recast in ways both subtle and sensational by their transposition into the allegedly pathological space of northern Ghana - as are, I suggest, the lives of the men and women who inhabit it.

Abstract This thesis attempts to analyze the psychological process of the protagonist in the 2003 Nobel Prize winner, J. M. Coetzee’s Boyhood with regard to anxiety disclosed in the light of Freud’s psychological theory. Freud’s penetration of the origin and types of anxiety is applied to exemplify young Coetzee’s psychological development in the family, school, and society. Through a Freudian reading, the interpretation for sentimental young Ceotzee’s multiple mental impulses, and capricious personality will be unveiled. It is also emphasized that the personal reminiscence in the autobiographical novel is conceived as the compressed edition and projection of the national history which reflects the political and ethnical issues in South Africa. This thesis falls into five chapters. Chapter one introduces the motives and the fundamental ideas of this thesis, as well as the conspectus of the autobiographical novel that Cotezee purposely composes in the third person for demonstrating the objectivity of writing. Chapter two concentrates on Freudian theory by exploring the origin, types, defensive mechanisms, and children’s psychology of human anxiety initially emerging from birth trauma. Chapter three investigates how the protagonist’s mental conflicts arise due to his concurrent passions toward his mother and the motherlike farm in the light of Freudian theory concerning perturbation and how he loathes and abominates the opponent father on the basis of Oedipus complex. Chapter four elaborates the protagonist’s dispossession of certainty aroused by the shadow of the Afrikaner government’s apartheid policy which drives him into the struggles of language, religion, and ethnical confusion. Chapter five concludes this thesis by delineating how Coetzee manifests his discomfort about the controversial problems of South African history, culture, and racism by recording the personal memoir in Boyhood. As to the anti-apartheid author, writing resembles the spiritual healing process for soothing his agony.

The subject of this study is the western scene in the calendar posters, mainly the furniture and decorates, created between 1900s to 1940s. The main purpose is to reveal the appropriation with western print media in calendar posters and the imagination of the modern lifestyle and western in late 19th to early 20th in Shanghai. The thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 focuses on the applications of elements in both western and eastern by analyzing the scenes and structures of calendar posters. The applications of New Year Picture, Folktales and skills of the Chinese painting in calendar posters are discussed in the first part of this chapter. Then it views the influents of western print media to the calendar posters by further understanding of the development of western calendar and advertisement in late 19th to early 20th. Chapter 2 compares the style of western furniture in calendar posters to the pictures in western print media. The results not only reveals that the pictures might be appropriated by the painter when drawing the calendar posters but also shows the spreading speed of western print media in Shanghai. Chapter 3 discusses the westernized phenomenon and influents of Art Deco in calendar posters in the 1930s with western interior decorating and furnishings found in the calendar posters.

This dissertation explores the social patterns and cultural layers of musical "open mics" in New York City. The study uses a qualitative approach which includes methods such as ethnography, in-depth interviewing, historical and discourse analyses focusing on open mics and the popular musicians who attend and perform them. Open mics, short for "open microphones," are public events that allow musicians to perform songs without a pre-planned, formal booking with a club or venue. Owing a historical and discursive connection to the folk hootenannies and jazz jam sessions of the past, these events have proliferated and spread considerably across the United States since the 1990s since their development, by name, in the late 1970s. Open mics not only reflect a do-it-yourself and participatory cultural ethos manifested with other recent expressive cultural activities, but also demonstrate a growing interstitial "musical third place" residing between private practicing and public performance. Musical open mics as musical third places provide musicians and singer/songwriters to network with other musicians, practice new musical compositions and play when other performance opportunities are not readily available. It provides a means for musicians to "hone their craft" in terms of performance methods and also construct musical identities in the almost exclusive company of other working singer/songwriters. This "backstage region" is thus framed and keyed by the musicians onto a continuum between two theoretical poles: performance practicing and practicing performance. Performance practicing as defined in this study frames a more performance-oriented display for musicians in locations called "closed open mics" or COMs. These settings, also residing on a theoretical continuum are socially more exclusive in terms of performance types, the aesthetic careers of the performers, the genres represented and the sociological makeup of the setting participants in general. OOMs or "open open mics," on the other hand, usually have a more fluid, diverse sociological composition of musical performers, performance types, and musical genres played and represented in these mainly weekly events. Closed open mics align into more homogeneous, isomorphic settings comprising "local open mic scenes" and open open mics remain more heterogeneous, socially inclusive, and unsettled as "pre-scenes."

Laing, Ralph Steven Ambrose. "The influence of Pope Innocent III on spiritual and clerical renewal in the Catholic Church during thirteenth century South Western Europe." Diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/8638.

Abstract:
The struggle between church and state continued during the thirteenth century. The crusades continued in the East with the advance of Islam. Crusades were also called for to put an end to heresies, in particular the Albigensian heresy. Unfortunately the established orders, such as the Cistercians, failed to combat heresy and to solve the problems of corruption in the Church. Scholastic theology developed with the establishment of the universities. These events influenced the thirteenth century. During the thirteenth century spiritual renewal began with Pope Innocent III. Councils like the Fourth Lateran Council defined church teaching and addressed corruption of the clergy. However, one of the most important sources of spiritual renewal came from the mendicant orders who had been given permission by Pope Innocent III to operate in the Church. These orders contributed immensely to education in the universities and through the Catholic laity culture advanced.
