Abstract:
This research studied the Gothic traditions in The Falls from its themes, languages and mysterious setting. Though Joyce Carol Oates may refuse to be characterized as a Gothic writer, more often than not she is regarded as such for the all-encompassing violence and deaths in her works. She treats the Gothic traditions as an appropriate way to obtain her writing objectives. Instead of sticking to the old Gothic conventions rigidly, she revises it in creative and ingenious ways. This research also focuses on its mysterious setting. In traditional Gothic fictions, the scenes are often set in gloomy places like the dark subterranean castles, the outlandish and desolate houses, and the confined decaying abbey. However, the Gothic novels develop with times and acquire new features. In The Falls, Oates places her story against the modern scenic spot Niagara Falls, which is the symbol of supernatural power and seduces people to do many unimaginably queer things. To conclude, The Falls has a kinship with the Gothic traditions in terms of its themes, languages and settings. With this Gothic tradition in The Falls, Oates successfully arouses readers’ interest and exposes the darkness of the society.

Abstract:
The article deals with the influence of theatrical aesthetics on Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail – the famous writer of the French popular literature of the second half of the 19th century. The great connoisseur of the theatre, Viscount of Ponson du Terrail filled his novels – and first of all, an extensive cycle of works about Rocambole – with allusions to the scenic practices of his time (first and foremost, he speaks about Parisian pulp theatres) and plays that had won favour with the commonalty: "Le Chiffonnier de Paris" by Félix Pyat and "La Tour de Nesle" by Alexandre Dumas. On the other hand, performability is a paradigmatic feature of feuilleton. Viscount of Ponson du Terrail was the leading representative of this genre. Particular attention is paid to the production of the play "Rocambole" by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Ernest Blum (1864) and the transformations that the novel text underwent in the stage version.

Abstract:
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky is a Russian great writer, thinker, philosopher and publicist. His skill influenced the literature and culture of the whole world, including Polish. This article discusses the role of the author of Crime and Punishment in Polish literature and culture, including the presence of his works in Polish theater and cinema. Many Polish writers, who studied the artistic skills of Dostoevsky, were attracted by the composition and structure of his novel, introspection and reflection of characters showing interpersonal relationships, a “borderline” state of mind. Even more important than the recognition by Polish writers of the artistry of Dostoevsky is the influence on them of his philosophical concepts, especially the concept of personality. The specificity of Dostoevsky’s technique is also related to the fact that the Russian writer created negative stereotypes of Poles. It must be remembered that the reception of Dostoevsky in Poland in the first decade after the Second World War was significantly limited. Today, the works of the Russian writer are transferred to theatrical scenes, on the basis of which series, full-length or animated films are shot. There are many editions of his short stories and novels in bookstores, often translated again.

Abstract:
The article deals with the roots of the crowd scenes in “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov, focusing on such motifs of the novel as death's head hawkmoth and theatrical motifs. The origins of the crowd scenes in Mikhail Bulgakov’s literary work are all connected with the mentioned three motifs. The researcher uses information from the little-known literary, historical, and cultural sources. These include, firstly, the occult works of the Fin de siècle writers, such as novels “The Gloomy House Mystery” and “The New Power” written by the “Criminal Novel Master” Aleksandr Tsehanovich (1862-1896); the play “The Fair God” by David Aizman (who has been justly called “Chekhov of the Jews”) (1860-1922); the story “The Succubus” written by the Belgian writer Antoine Louis Camille Lemonnier. “A House in a Delirium” by a German prose writer W.Hollander. Second, these include literary work by a Soviet writer: story “The Condemned” by Mikhail Kozakov. Third, an important role belongs to sketches from the “The Red Panorama” journal: “The Footsteps Leading Westward” by Jānis Larri, “Travelling from Resort to Resort: Yalta” by D. Gorodinskiy. The plots and details of the named works had a great influence on Mikhail Bulgakov and inspired him while writing such chapters of the novel as “Never Talk with Strangers”, “The Seventh Proof”, “The Chase”, “Praise Be to the Rooster”, “News from Yalta”, “Black Magic and Its Exposure”, “Nikanor Ivanovich’s Dream”, “The Great Ball at Satan's” and some fragments of the auxiliary plot connected with the figure of Pontius Pilate.

Abstract:
The article aims to highlight the role of Arvīds Grigulis’ (1906–1989) personality in the Latvian Soviet literary process in the context of the Latvian Soviet Writers’ Union, attempting to discover the contradictions and significance of Arvīds Grigulis’ personality. Arvīds Grigulis was a long-time member of the Writers’ Union, a member of the Soviet nomenklatura, and an authority of the soviet literary process. His evaluations of pre-soviet literary heritage and writings of his contemporaries were often harsh and ruthless, and also influenced the development of the further literary process. The article is based on the documents of the Central Committee of the Latvian Communist Party, the Latvian Soviet Writers’ Union and the Communist Party local organization of the Latvian Soviet Writers’ Union that are available at the Latvian State Archive of the National Archives of Latvia, as well as memories of Grigulis’ contemporaries. It is concluded that the personality of the writer Arvīds Grigulis, although unfolding less in the context of the Writers’ Union, is essential for the exploration of the soviet literary process and events behind the scenes. The article mainly describes events and episodes taking place until 1965, when Arvīds Grigulis’ influence in the Writers’ Union was more remarkable. Individual and further studies should analyse changes and the impact of his decisions in the cultural process of the 70s and 80s of the 20th century.

Kolesnyk, Alla. "Stylistic features of naturalism in the works of Stefan Kovaliv." Vìsnik Marìupolʹsʹkogo deržavnogo unìversitetu. Serìâ: Fìlologìâ 13, no. 22 (2020): 25–30. http://dx.doi.org/10.34079/2226-3055-2020-13-22-25-30.

Abstract:
In the paper the results of the study of naturalism in the works of Stefan Kovaliv are presented. The problem of naturalism in the works of Ukrainian writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries remains poorly studied. Among them is Stefan Kovaliv, a Ukrainian writer and teacher who worked for more than forty years as the head of a large public school in Boryslav and left a creative legacy – stories about life in Boryslav. S. Kovaliv's work took place during the intensive development of the city of Boryslav – a major oil center of Galicia and the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire, whose colony was this Ukrainian territory. S. Kovaliv wrote under the influence of Ivan Franko – the founder of naturalism in the Ukrainian literature. Therefore, it was necessary to study the features of the works of S. Kovaliv in the context of compliance with the stylistic features of naturalism. In his works, the writer portrayed Ukrainians who became victims of the capitalists, who deceitfully took away their peasants' land for oil production. These shocking cases of injustice, as well as the situation of the peasants in Boryslav, became the object of the writer's image. The manifestation of signs of naturalism in the stories «Deserter», «Roit's hole», «Five», «Consequences of feebleness» is analyzed. It is determined that the depicted events are motivated by a social factor, for which the writer used such naturalistic techniques as factography of the image, logging of events with detailed reproduction of their course in time, recording small details, using contrasting scenes to achieve feedback from the reader. These techniques achieve objectivity, close to scientific accuracy, and high plausibility of the image. The figures depicted in the stories have their own individual characteristics due to their origin: gullibility, ignorance, helplessness – inherent mainly in Ukrainian peasants, cunning, use of any situation to their advantage, criminal actions – capitalist entrepreneurs, irresponsibility, indifference – to local officials, whose origin is not defined. Racial characteristics of the heroes of the works are revealed, motivated and intensified mainly in the negative direction under the influence of the social environment at a particular historical moment in Boryslav, at the time of development of the oil industry. On the basis of the conducted analysis the belonging of the writer to naturalists who formed a basis of existence of this literary direction in Ukraine is defined.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to various forms of Hamsun’s influence on Siberian writers of the 1910–1930s. On the pages of Siberian periodicals, the Norwegian writer was often mentioned in theatrical chronicle, in the lists of European book novelties, in poetic texts, but he influenced most clearly the general northern flavour of the Siberian prose. Fifteen stories and short novellas of famous Siberian writers (Georgy Grebenshchikov, Isaak Goldberg, Anton Sorokin, Georgy Vyatkin) and almost forgotten writers (Stepan Isakov, Arseny Zhilyakov, Maximilian Kravkov) form the “Siberian Hamsuniana”, the distinctive features of which are “anti-urbanism”, “ethnography”, folklorism, northern landscapes and scenes of folk life. When studying the texts that became the subject of description in this article, the materials from an archive of the Siberian literature historian and critic N. N. Yanovsky were used, who collected and printed a book of short stories by S. Isakov and A. Zhilyakov in the mid-1980s with an introductory article, which sets out biographies of forgotten writers. In the introductory article to this book, it is mentioned that literary comrades called Stepan Isakov half-jokingly to be the “Siberian Hamsun”. When analyzing the Siberian prose on Hamsun themes, special attention was paid to the stylization elements of northern mythology, shamanistic predictions, various legends, which creates an image of Siberia similar to the image of northern Europe by Hamsun.

This study focused on the gendered speech styles namely; male speech styles and female speech styles used by Erin Gruwell in the Freedom Writers movie and the changes that can be perceived from her use of gendered speech styles. Based on the writer’s descriptive qualitative approach analysis on the data, she found out that the teacher uses both male speech styles and female speech styles along 15 class scenes. She used Co-operative feature of female speech styles and Aggressive feature of male speech styles as her dominant feature which were used in each class scene. However, the writer could not find any gradual changes from the teacher’s use of speech styles. Therefore, the teacher’s changes in using speech styles did not seem to correlate with the students’ changes in the attitude towards the teacher.

Abstract:
In order to locate and contextualise the space women filmmakers occupy in what I refer to as New Pakistani Cinema (NPC), this article highlights the eight women directors of NPC, whose films were released between 2013 and 2018: Afia Nathaniel, Iram Parveen Bilal, Meenu Gaur, Mehreen Jabbar, Momina Duraid, Sabiha Sumar, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Shazia Ali Khan. In doing so, this article also touches upon women working behind the scenes as producers and writers (often in multiple roles on the same film as director, producer and/or writer) to illustrate how women filmmakers have played a key role in establishing NPC in its early years. Starting with initial releases in 2013, NPC functions within a complex terrain, informed in part by new industry players, the crossing of borders in the production of films, the role of foreign content in Pakistani cinemas and an engagement with regional and global themes situated within a local context. Therefore, NPC and the evolving cinema culture that surrounds it demand unique and innovative forms and avenues of production, distribution and exhibition, along with distinct emerging imaginaries that are an amalgamation of the local, national, regional and global. It is within the temporal and spatial intersections of these different processes that we can begin to situate these women filmmakers.

Abstract:
The article deals with the musical space of the artistic heritage of J. Bunyan and H. Skovoroda that has many common features. The general place in the heritage of both writers is reference to solemn church or angelic singing, accompanying the scenes of triumph of the heroes. There are numerous quotations from the Bible psalms, that both writers mastered perfectly. Outplaying of the mythologemes “a man as a musical instrument” and “a world as a musical instrument” became common for both authors. Musical code is expressed in comparison with man’s features and musical sounds; assimilation of the world with a musical instrument, desire to hear “the music of spheres”. The comparison of a man’s emotional impulse with the sounds of musical instruments reveals willingness of the man of the Baroque age for the search of correspondence and for the synthesis of arts in a broad sense. Music as an art differs in the ability to reveal symbols by means of a sound, having a significant influence on the recipient. The analysis of musical component of H. Skovoroda and J. Bunyan’s work demonstrates its precise orientation on musicalisation of writers’ discourse. In the meantime musical theme is represented much wider in Skovoroda’s work than in the work of the English writer. The article introduces J. Bunyan and H. Skovoroda as bright representatives of national variants of baroque aesthetics.

Therefore, the theoretical basis used here includes studies of performance, pragmatic and discourse analysis, offering tools to enable this performativity to be seen under different approaches. The second moment of this dissertation is reserved for the verification of these theoretical principles and the dramaturgy of Rodrigues, through the analysis of Anjo Negro, Valsa nº6 and A Falecida. The traces of performativity are observed in each one of these plays through their emphasized formal characteristics: while the theory of the speech acts tries to evidence the performativity present in the dialogues of A Falecida; the study of the poetic function of language permits to ascertain traces of performativity involved in the writing of Valsa nº 6. Also, the performance studies enable the understanding of performative content revealed in the dramaturgical architecture of Nelson Rodrigues as a scenic writer, especially in Anjo Negro.<br>Esta dissertação busca investigar as relações que Nelson Rodrigues promove entre o texto e a cena, o que faz com que sua dramaturgia revele traços de performatividade.

PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO<br>COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR<br>FUNDAÇÃO DE APOIO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIRO<br>PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTS. The thesis proposes to reflect on the multiple faces of the writer Marcelino Freire, considering both his writings, especially those that were not published by major publishers, and the projects he developed with the objective of rethinking the scenario of production and circulation of Literature, Recognizing in Freire a performance similar to that of an author-actor, one can say, for identifying in his actions not only the desire to create works and movements around the word, but also an insistence on reinventing himself, as a person immersed in a scenic game. From the launching of his short story books that Freire was able to project himself into the literary environment, arousing the interest of both readers and critics. With Angu de Sangue (2000) the writer defined his particular way of creation, namely: a vindictive writing, centered on making protagonists marginalized individuals who in their attitudes defy the expected, this characteristic was pushed to the limit in Contos Negreiros (2005), winner of the Jabuti Award (2006) in the category Best Book of Tales and Chronicles. In recent years, the writer has also achieved prominence for being one of the most active voices of contemporary Brazilian literature to advocate for another scenario for writing, promoting events like the Balada Literária and the Quebras project. A cultural agitated, thus defines Freire himself, referring to his interest in moving the cultural scene, stimulating both the entry of new authors and the circulation of the literature by many means. From this perspective, this study questions the extent to which Freire s practices are as noisy as the books that designed him, or if, on the contrary, Freire, despite boasting a renewal of the scene, walks very close to an already existing modus oprerandi. Thus, the thesis pursued two central axes: to perceive how the writer places himself before an environment open to new possibilities of narrative production, especially, due to the dialogue with the new technologies of communication and information and, in parallel, to discuss the relationship between Literature and engagement, attentive to the transit and the acting of the writer in both traditional and alternative circuits. As a writer who shies away from rigid cataloging, Marcelino Freire slips between disobedience and restraint, between activism and reserve, between exhibition and invention. He wants to be plural in the world of the pages and also outside it, blurring the boundaries between the real and the fictional, through a gesture of publicity of his own person.

This paper addresses some nuances concerning the author s figure appraisal and construction by the media in the contemporary world and discusses possible issues associated with its reflection in the production and acceptance of his artistic creations. Abstract:
COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR<br>PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTS. The present study aims to analyze the literary work of authors who are part of the Literatura Marginal (Literature from the Outside) as a way to understand the chief aspects of this movement’s writing style as well as its main political characteristics. From this perspective, the productions of the periferia discourse will be understood as counter-hegemonic manifestations that originate from an effort to produce a specific view that reflects the marginalized experience, thus silencing any other discourse produced outside of the periferia space. To this end, we developed a theoretical outline that brings an understanding of the kinds of political engagement produced by this group. In addition to examining the literary product itself, this study considers the parallels between this type of narrative and the Hip-Hop movement, more specifically Rap, highlighting the many similarities between them as they relate to the structure of the writing and the way the discourse is disseminated, aiming at the conscientization of readers/listeners. Because this relates to an uncommon literary experience, the presence of periferia writers in our literary series also raises new questions about the role of the intellectual. If before it was the intellectual who acted as the spokesperson for these writers, now the outsiders themselves break with the passive role of objects and claim their place as protagonists. In bringing a critical view to this debate it is possible to identify the tensions that the periferia authors bring to this discussion.

Abstract:
The creative component of this thesis, the novel Gris-gris, explores how a mother's betrayal of her daughter and the resulting rape of that daughter is reiterated through three following generations of women within the same family. In the contextualizing component, I explore approaches to effectively crafting the pivotal rape scenes in Gris-gris to avoid reducing the novel, in the reader's mind, to being primarily one "about rape". I did not want the scenes to be pornographic or voyeuristic, metaphorical or ambiguous. I wanted them to be honest and truly affecting - but not hijack the novel's central narrative, which is how one mother's betrayal reverberates through following generations. Two popular, literary novels with plots that hinge on rape scenes are Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and Isabel Allende's The House of Spirits. The architecture and positioning of the rape scenes in these works has much to do with each novel's unique narrative power. My original contribution to knowledge, therefore, is a study -- from the point of view of a practicing creative writer -- of 1) how these two writers craft rape scenes in these novels and 2) how, in the writing of Gris-gris, I situate and develop my own practice in terms of craft, while responding to personal and social considerations. This study will inform the creative writer who is assessing how to modulate scenes of rape in literature as one novelist's considered approach to the delicate balances involved in crafting such scenes.

Abstract:
Fortuny (1983) by Pere Gimferrer is the only novel (at least to date) that the author has written in Catalan and it represents one of the most unique novels of contemporary Hispanic narrative. The aims of the present study are mainly two: to shed light on one of the most important, but least studied, works by Pere Gimferrer, the greatest representative of Hispanic creativity for the Post-War Generation, and to analyse critical reception of the work and show how the novel has evolved from the time of publication in 1983 until today. This essay consists of three major parts: the study of critical reception, the narratological analysis of the text and the unveiling of the textual, but above all visual, references that make up the novel. The latter allows us to explain two essential elements of the novel: the imaginary Fortuny on the one hand and, on the other, the novel’s intertextual concrete figure of speech, its ekphrasis. The study of this intentionally visual character of the novel not only wanted to highlight the importance of two arts to which Gimferrer has always paid special attention – we refer to cinema and painting – but has also demonstrated the desire of the writer to innovate the Catalan narrative scene, using different literary devices to push the limits of the genre novel.
