Abstract:
Adam Schaff was at the front of the ideological campaign organized in post-war Poland during the wave of Stalinization. By attempting to adapt the Soviet “model” of public discussion to Polish academia, Schaff wanted to teach the representatives of the Lvov-Warsaw School of logic how to lead a scholarly debate. Schaff ’s group consisted of young scholars from the Instytut Kształcenia Kadr Naukowych [Institute for Education of Scientific Staff] and with critical reviews on the works of Polish logicians they tried to force their opponents to change the basic principles of their academic practice

The 1988 Centennial of the American Society of Church History should make us pause long enough to try to see Philip Schaff(1819–1893) whole and to appraise (if I may borrow a phrase) “the transient and permanent” in his life's work. Complementing George H. Shriver's centennial biography, Philip Schaff: Christian Scholarand Ecumenical Prophet (1987), in this essay I propose to sketch an intellectual portrayal of Schaff. My aim is to highlight and appraise briefly what is theologically significant in his total career as well as to place his life in the larger context of the history of theology a

The article describes the youth and adolescence of Adam Schaff in the years 1913–1939. Taking into account the context of Polish-Jewish relations during the former Austrian Partition, the author presents Schaff’s growing up in the interwar Lviv and his gradual involvement in the communist movement, which led him to become a member of the youth wing of the Communist Party of Poland and the party itself, and his several-month imprisonment in 1937. In addition to the factual reconstruction of the Polish philosopher’s life, the article aims to answer the question: what were the main motives that m

To date the most useful evidence for support of a particular incubation strategy includes water vapor conductance (determined from fossil eggshell) and sedimentary structures, associated with eggs or eggshell, that are interpreted as fossil nests. One such sedimentary structure (MOR 3062) from the Upper Cretaceous Two Medicine Formation of Montana, is described along with the microstructure of the associated eggs and eggshell (oospeci

Abstract In 1855 the historian Philip Schaff wrote that the emergence of Methodism was almost as important a step in the development of Protestantism as the Puritan revolution of the seventeenth century. Though Schaff had little sympathy for the popular nature of American Methodism’s early phase, he was a keen observer who could not help but ac knowledge some of the factors that led to the movement’s vitality and growth. Schaff, like so many commentators before and since, was particularly impressed by the effectiveness of the Methodist preachers. What Methodist preachers lacked in higher educa
