Abstract:
AbstractThe article questions the changes which took place in the perception of time and of the self during an epoch of historical transition. Using the example of early modern prose romances (among others Fortunatus, Hug Schapler, Der Goldfaden) it is demonstrated that the category of the linearity of (a life-) time acquires a new meaning and that simultaneously the perception of time starts to detach itself from the cyclical rhythm of nature (and from the liturgical year). In this way, the conceptions of the Verfügbarkeit of time and of life are shifted. The article shows the extent to which the prose romance thematised in different ways the relations which are fraught with tension between the Unverfügbarkeit of a lifetime and the cyclical dimensions of time; in addition it also demonstrates the role which is thus played by self-awareness.

Abstract:
Consider a robot wandering around an unfamiliar environment, performing actions and observing the consequences. The robot's task is to construct an internal model of its environment, a model that will allow it to predict the effects of its actions and to determine what sequences of actions to take to reach particular goal states. Rivest and Schapire (1987a,b; Schapire 1988) have studied this problem and have designed a symbolic algorithm to strategically explore and infer the structure of “finite state” environments. The heart of this algorithm is a clever representation of the environment called an update graph. We have developed a connectionist implementation of the update graph using a highly specialized network architecture. With backpropagation learning and a trivial exploration strategy — choosing random actions — the connectionist network can outperform the Rivest and Schapire algorithm on simple problems. Our approach has additional virtues, including the fact that the network can accommodate stochastic environments and that it suggests generalizations of the update graph representation that do not arise from a traditional, symbolic perspective.

Abstract:
Ensemble classification techniques such as bagging, (Breiman, 1996a), boosting (Freund & Schapire, 1997) and arcing algorithms (Breiman, 1997) have received much attention in recent literature. Such techniques have been shown to lead to reduced classification error on unseen cases. Even when the ensemble is trained well beyond zero training set error, the ensemble continues to exhibit improved classification error on unseen cases. Despite many studies and conjectures, the reasons behind this improved performance and understanding of the underlying probabilistic structures remain open and challenging problems. More recently, diagnostics such as edge and margin (Breiman, 1997; Freund & Schapire, 1997; Schapire et al., 1998) have been used to explain the improvements made when ensemble classifiers are built. This paper presents some interesting results from an empirical study performed on a set of representative datasets using the decision tree learner C4.5 (Quinlan, 1993). An exponential-like decay in the variance of the edge is observed as the number of boosting trials is increased. i.e. boosting appears to ‘homogenise’ the edge. Some initial theory is presented which indicates that a lack of correlation between the errors of individual classifiers is a key factor in this variance reduction.

Abstract:
This study presents the characterization of the nonlinearly viscoelastic behavior of double base propellant (DBP) using Schapery-type constitutive model in the different conditions of temperature, strain level and strain rate. A recursive-iterative numerical algorithm is generated for the Schapery-type nonlinearly viscoelastic constitutive and implemented in a displacement-based finite element (FE) code for ABAQUS user material subroutines. Then, the model parameters are obtained by analyzing the response of creep-recovery tests and constant rate tensile tests at different temperatures, strain levels and strain rates. And find a linear relationship between temperatures and the effective stresses which determine the limit of linear viscoelactic. The FE model with the calibrated time-dependent and nonlinear material parameters is used to simulate the creep-recovery tests and the constant rate tensile tests, and reasonable predictions are shown.

Abstract:
The theory behind the success of adaptive reweighting and combining algorithms (arcing) such as Adaboost (Freund & Schapire, 1996a, 1997) and others in reducing generalization error has not been well understood. By formulating prediction as a game where one player makes a selection from instances in the training set and the other a convex linear combination of predictors from a finite set, existing arcing algorithms are shown to be algorithms for finding good game strategies. The minimax theorem is an essential ingredient of the convergence proofs. An arcing algorithm is described that converges to the optimal strategy. A bound on the generalization error for the combined predictors in terms of their maximum error is proven that is sharper than bounds to date. Schapire, Freund, Bartlett, and Lee (1997) offered an explanation of why Adaboost works in terms of its ability to produce generally high margins. The empirical comparison of Adaboost to the optimal arcing algorithm shows that their explanation is not complete.

Abstract:
This is not an article on the crime of infanticide as such. It is a footnote, as it were, to Schapera's writings on infanticide in Bechuanaland. The intention is not to go into the intricacies and controversies concerning the crime of infanticide. Nor does it suggest that Schapera ever devoted any substantial book or article to infanticide. Rather he referred in passing to instances of infanticide in various articles and books he wrote on Bechuanaland. He indicated that infanticide was practised in Bechuanaland under certain circumstances, as in any other society. However, it was obvious the exact extent of the practice was unknown because the practice was shrouded in secrecy. It was only when a case had been witnessed by a third party or had been reported to the authorities that the matter reared its head. As such the statistics on infanticide are hard to come by and even where they exist they are at best misleading. The note considers the instances referred to by Schapera and comments on a few available cases. It will emerge that these cases were only those which were prosecuted in the European courts. Infanticide took place broadly under the following circumstances:

Abstract:
Numerical wave models for shallow water waves are of particular importance for the calculation of the wave climate in harbours and coastal areas. Especially nonlinear time domain models, which are based on the Boussinesq-Wave- Equations, may be helpful in the future for simulating the interaction of currents with refraction, diffraction, reflection and for simulating shoaling..-of irregular waves in natural areas; a potential which has not yet been fully developed. During the last ten years numerical models, based on these equations, have been published; such as ABBOTT et. al. , HAUGUEL and SCHAPER / ZIELKE . Research on this topic is currently being carried on. Some efforts have been made to verify the capability of the models to describe the various physical phenomena. However, up to now, verification has been limited to regular waves. The aim of this paper therefore is, to consider questions concerning irregular, nonlinear waves.

A method to predict the nonlinear relaxation behavior from creep experiments of nonlinear viscoelastic materials is presented. It is shown that for given nonlinear creep properties, and creep compliance represented by the Prony series, the Schapery creep model can be transformed into a set of first order nonlinear equations. The solution of these equations enables the obtaining of the nonlinear stress relaxation curves. The strain-dependent constitutive equation can then be constructed for a given nonlinear viscoelastic model, as needed for engineering applications. A comparison example of the calculated stress relaxation curves, with test data for polyurethane demonstrates the very good accuracy of the proposed method.

The effects of interfacial thickness and temperature on thermal conductivity and CTEs of Al/SiC packaging materials were investigated. The interfacial thermal conductivity and thickness have significant influence on the thermal conductivity of the Al/SiC packaging materials, while the SiC size has slight influence on that of the Al/SiC packaging materials. The experiment results of thermal conductivity are similar to Hassleman model and simulation results. Schapery model can be used to calculate the CTEs of composites when temperatures are lower(50~100°C) and Kerner model can be used when temperatures are higher(300~450°C). The CTEs of composites will increase more quickly than that by three models when temperatures are between 100°C and 300°C.

Abstract:
In the face of the dominating tradition of British structural functionalism, anthropological studies of political leadership represented an important move towards accounting for the dynamics of centralized, as well as acephalous, polities (for example, Barth 1959 and Baily 1970; cf. Schapera 1956). Moreover, in focusing upon political actors and, by extension, political relations, these studies necessarily took account of the role of the subjects. Yet, despite Gluckman's innovative notion of “rituals of rebellion” (1954; cf. Beidelman 1966), the issue of political leadership has rarely focused upon the political dynamics of the ruler-subject relationship, examining the concerns and responses of those who more or less voluntarily subject themselves to an authority figure. Even such an important contribution as Succession to High Office (Goody 1966) completely ignores this issue.

Abstract:
In the context of an updated Lagrangian formulation, a computational model is developed for analyzing the steady-state frictional rolling contact problems in nonlinear viscoelastic solids. Schapery's nonlinear viscoelastic model is adopted to simulate the viscoelastic behavior. In addition to the material nonlinearity, the model accounts for geometrical nonlinearities, large displacements, and rotations with small strains. To satisfy the steady-state rolling contact condition, a spatially dependent incremental form of the viscoelastic constitutive equations is derived. Consequently, the dependence on the past history of the strain rate in the stress–strain law is expressed in terms of the spatial variation of the strain. The contact conditions are exactly satisfied by employing the Lagrange multiplier approach to enforce the contact constraints. The classical Coulomb's friction law is used to simulate friction. The developed model is verified and compared and good agreement is obtained. The applicability of the developed model is demonstrated by analyzing the steady-state rolling contact response of viscoelastically walled-wheel over rigid foundation. Moreover, the obtained results show remarkable effects of the rotational velocity and the viscoelastic material parameters on the mechanical response of steady-state frictional rolling contact.
