A taxonomic synopsis of the members of the re-circumscibed Thyrsacanthus from Argentina and Paraguay is presented. Two species are recognized for the region, T. boliviensis and T. sulcatus. Thyrsacanthus sulcatus is clearly distinguished from T. boliviensis by its small, white, lilac or pale blue, presumably psychophilous flowers with a narrow tube, instead of the lar

ABSTRACTThis essay reviews Frederick Schauer's book, The Force of Law (2015). Schauer argues that coercion is central to legal practice and should be no less important in legal theory. In doing so, Schauer presents formidable challenges to standard versions of legal positivism—and does so from within the positivist framework. Much of Schauer's criticism on that score is sound. His analysis of the role coercion can play in accomplishing law's moral tasks is also welcome and important. Nevertheless, Schauer's jurisprudential framework comes up short in its inability to distinguish law from other

Abstract:
This essay examines and juxtaposes Mario Jori’s and Frederick Schauer’s ideas on legal formalism. Although developed independently of each other, these ideas show remarkable similarities: both focus on the notion of norm or rule as a tool for clarifying the notion of legal formalism; both defend legal formalism from the criticisms routinely moved against it. The author maintains that Jori’s and Schauer’s theories may contribute to shed light on (and criticize) the controversial notion of defeasibility of legal rules; they may also contribute to scale down, from a legal-

Napsin is an aspartic proteinase which has two essential asparagine residues in the active peptide (Tatnell et al., 1997). Napsin may participate in the processing of pulmonary surfactant protein B (Weaver et al., 1992; Chuman et al., 1999). in addition, changes in napsin expression have been linked to primary adenocarcinoma as well as kidney dysfunction (Hirano et al., 2000; Schauer-Vukasinovic et al., 2000). Localization studies by light microscope immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization detected napsin in the lungs as well as in the kidney (Tatnell et al., 1997; Chuman et al, 1999; Sc

Abstract:
Eleven species of Australian Myrtaceae were evaluated for their ability to be cultured in vitro. Ten species produced axillary shoots (microcuttings) suitable for inducing roots in vitro. Microcuttings of 9 species successfully developed roots and were transferred to soil culture in a glasshouse, where plants grew normally. Nodal explants were grown on a modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with varying concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), to study shoot proliferation. Beaufortia heterophylla Turcz. explants did not respond to BAP, and all explants eventually died. The

Interdisciplinary work in the law often starts and stops with the social sciences. To produce a complete understanding of how law, evolutionary game-theoretic insights must, however, supplement these more standard social scientific methods. To illustrate, this article critically examines The Force of Law by Frederick Schauer and The Expressive Powers of Law by Richard McAdams. Combining the methods of analytic jurisprudence and social psychology, Schauer clarifies the need for a philosophically respectable and empirically well-grounded account of the ubiquity of legal sanctions.
