Stephenson, Barry. 6. Ritual as performance. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199943524.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
Cross-culturally, ritual typically includes elements commonly associated with performance events: music or rhythmic accompaniment; dance or other stylized bodily movements; and masking, costuming, and makeup. ‘Ritual as performance’ considers performance theory and performance studies and some of the work of significant theorists in these fields: J. L. Austin and Richard Schechner. By looking at the kōan tradition of Zen Buddhism, Schechner's approach to ritual can be better understood. Schechner places performance on a continuum that runs from efficacy to entertainment. The notions of embodiment and inscription in ritual studies are also considered along with the noetic implications of ritual action, such as pilgrimage.

Carlson, Marvin. 4. Theatre and performance. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780199669820.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Modern interest in performance can be traced to several different developments from the 1950s to 1970s in the art world, in academic theatre, and in the social sciences, particularly sociology, anthropology, and linguistics. ‘Theatre and performance’ outlines the influence of this major shift in methodological orientation, which has become known as the ‘performative turn’, on Richard Schechner, in particular, who was editor of The Drama Review. His work with Victor Turner led to the first course on ‘performance theory’ at New York University. Courses on performance studies are now taught around the world. How has theatre changed as a result of the challenge of and gradual accommodation to performance and performance studies?

Abstract:
This chapter reviews prominent theories of ‘performance’ and ‘performativity’ and compares them to theories of ritual. It begins with important theories of performativity in language, and moves on to discussions of the relation between performativity in theatre and in ritual. This chapter argues shows how a focus on performativity in religion and ritual emphasizes embodiment over cognition, situated communication over linguistic structure, and contextual meaning over propositional content. This chapter considers the example of Indian popular theatre and its relation to Indian theology. It also reviews important theories of performativity associated with Austin, Goffman, Schechner, Tambiah, and Turner, arguing that a performative approach to religion and ritual sees them as emergent, contingent, creative, dynamic, embodied, open-ended, and above all context-dependent.

Heile, Björn. Toward a Theory of Experimental Music Theatre. Edited by Yael Kaduri. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199841547.013.001.

Full text
Abstract:
Although recent years have seen the emergence of sustained research on experimental music theater, most of this is largely of a descriptive nature. To address the shortcomings of such approaches, this chapter outlines a theory of experimental music theater based on a clear definition and a number of constitutive features. A number of theoretical terms from the fields of performance theory and theater practice are introduced, namely “showing doing” (Richard Schechner), “non-matrixed performance” and “non-matrixed representation” (Michael Kirby), and “metaxis” (Augusto Boal). The analytical effectiveness of this theoretical framework is demonstrated by discussion of case studies drawn both from the “classics” of experimental music theater (John Cage, Mauricio Kagel) and from recent work (Christopher Fox, David Bithell, Trond Reinholdtsen).

Henricks, Thomas S. Cultural Play. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039072.003.0009.

Abstract:
This chapter examines what it means to play culturally, with particular emphasis on how cultural play can alter the relation between or bridge the gap between socially preferred forms of culture and the wider possibilities for thinking, feeling, and acting. It first considers the ways in which other fields of relationships both express and resist culture's patterning, along with play as childhood socialization. It then discusses three models of the play-culture interrelationships: first, people and groups play within culture; second, people play with or at culture; and third, culture itself is playing and people ad–pt an appropriate, playful style of relating to these processes. It also explores the theories of Roger Caillois, Mikhail Bakhtin, Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner, Don Handelman, and Richard Schechner. The chapter concludes with an analysis of Jacques Derrida's thesis that cultural patterns can be read as texts containing widely diverging trails of meaning, along with Hans-Georg Gadamer's interpretive approach to play.
