Much of the problems associated with contentious identities in contemporary India can be traced to British colonial ethnographic constructs and categories which tended to rigidly fix identities which had been much more fluid in pre-colonial times. The colonial legacy continued in post-colonial India, impelling castes and communities to negotiate and renegotiate their identities and constitutional positions. One such community is the Lambada of Telangana. Historically a pastoral community involved in cattle breeding and caravan trade, they were designated as ‘criminal tribes’ under colonial rul

Scheduled tribes (ST) in India are distinct indigenous groups by their unique social structures, cultural practices, and socioeconomic characteristics. They are often economically disadvantaged and socially marginalized, exhibiting a homogenous identity within their social and geographical boundaries. The backwardness includes uneven literacy growth, economy, human development, immunization patterns, nutritional levels, and overall health conditions. Considering these factors with prior studies, this research explored the socio-demographic and economic status of STs in West Bengal. West Bengal

We find the caste gaps continue to be significant, indicating the persistence of the traditional caste hierarchy.
