Abstract:
I was watching the tele the other night and a commercial came on exclaiming that scientists have found a way to translate waveforms into text to help the deaf. I realized at that moment; I am as much a scientist as I am an artist. In this regard, composition is deemed a scientific recipe. Ingredients such as conveying the rhythm of linguistic discoveries to further guide fragmented responses of memories. Analyzing frequencies emerging upon application of colors adjacent as well as finding the visual balance that coheres with a particular tempo as relating to sound and vibration to exploit the untold conversations between traditional means and contemporary constructions. There’s a sync button for everything we do, finding that button is the test. I do not confine myself as a scientist, tomorrow I may think I’m a surgeon. But only after I’ve exhausted every theory for my actions, after I’ve become synchronized within the realm of my creations, will I then be able to determine why I’ve governed myself to evolve with what it is that I am becoming.

Ghazizadeh, Fard Seyed Mohammad Ali. "An Adaptive Well-Balanced Positivity Preserving Central-Upwind Scheme for the Shallow Water Equations Over Quadtree Grids." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/40392.

Full text
Abstract:
Shallow water equations are widely used to model water flows in the field of hydrodynamics and civil engineering. They are complex, and except for some simplified cases, no analytical solution exists for them. Therefore, the partial differential equations of the shallow water system have been the subject of various numerical analyses and studies in past decades. In this study, we construct a stable and robust finite volume scheme for the shallow water equations over quadtree grids. Quadtree grids are two-dimensional semi-structured Cartesian grids that have different applications in several fields of engineering, such as computational fluid dynamics. Quadtree grids refine or coarsen where it is required in the computational domain, which gives the advantage of reducing the computational cost in some problems. Numerical schemes on quadtree grids have different properties. An accurate and robust numerical scheme is able to provide a balance between the flux and source terms, preserve the positivity of the water height and water surface, and is capable of regenerating the grid with respect to different conditions of the problem and computed solution. The proposed scheme uses a piecewise constant approximation and employs a high-order Runge-Kutta method to be able to make the solution high-order in space and time. Hence, in this thesis, we develop an adaptive well-balanced positivity preserving scheme for the shallow water system over quadtree grids utilizing different techniques. We demonstrate the formulations of the proposed scheme over one of the different configurations of quadtree cells. Six numerical benchmark tests confirm the ability of the scheme to accurately solve the problems and to capture small perturbations. Furthermore, we extend the proposed scheme to the coupled variable density shallow water flows and establish an extended method where we focus on eliminating nonphysical oscillations, as well as well-balanced, positivity preserving, and adaptivity properties of the scheme. Four different numerical benchmark tests show that the proposed extension of the scheme is accurate, stable, and robust.

Dunbar, Fiona. "Digital Signature Scheme Variations." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/1076.

Full text
Abstract:
A digital signature scheme is the process of signing an electronic message that can be transmitted over a computer network. Digital signatures provide message authentication that can be proved to a third party. With the rise of electronic communications over the Internet, digital signatures are becoming increasingly important, especially for the exchange of messages of legal significance. In 1988, Goldwasser, Micali and Rivest (GMR) [31] defined a signature scheme as a collection of algorithms: key generation, signature generation and signature verification. They defined a signature scheme as secure if it was existentially unforgeable against a chosen-message attack. These general definitions suited most signatures at the time, however, over the last decade digital signatures have emerged for which the GMR definitions are unsuitable. These signature schemes, together with their applications and security and efficiency considerations, will be explored in this thesis. These signature scheme variations have been classified by the additional services they provide to ordinary signature schemes, namely increased efficiency, increased security, anonymity, and enhanced signing and verifying capabilities.

Extension languages are an important part of modern applications development. Java as a platform does not provide a standard extension language. Scheme is one possible choice as an extension language for Java. There are a variety of techniques for implementing Scheme in Java varying from interpreting s-expressions to compiling into Java byte-codes. The historical evolution of one implementation is discussed over the course of several years. The design of the Java-to-Scheme and Scheme-to-Java interfaces is reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of Java and Scheme are compared.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a Scheme to JavaScript compiler. Scheme and JavaScript are similar in many respects but differ in some major points. In the context of a Scheme to JavaScript compilation JavaScript's lack of proper tail recursion and continuations is especially noticeable. In this work we first show that without these two features our compiler produces efficient code that rivals with handwritten JavaScript code. However, this reduced input language is not compliant to the Scheme specification but represents a pragmatical sub-language. In this configuration {\sc{Scm2Js}} has been successfully used on a daily basis within our team. Even though not enabled by default, provides proper tail recursion and continuations too. We present a trampoline based technique for proper tail recursion that has the distinct advantage of efficiently integrating with existing JavaScript code. Our continuations implementation is an improvement over existing exception based continuations. We have adapted previous techniques that were designed for one-shot continuations (designed for check-pointing and migration). In order to capture the essence of our continuation algorithm we have developed, a canonic version of our implementation. Without dependencies on non-standard Scheme features, like exceptions, we advertise as an alternative to CPS. We have proved the correctness of on a simplified version of Scheme

Abstract:
Many applications in engineering practice can be described by thehyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Numerical modeling of this typeof equations often involves large gradients or shocks, which makes it achallenging task for conventional numerical methods to accurately simulate suchsystems. Thus developing accurate and efficient shock capturing numericalschemes becomes important for the study of hyperbolic equations. In this dissertation, a detailed study of the numerical methods for linearand nonlinear unsteady hyperbolic equations was carried out. A new finitedifference shock capturing scheme of finite volume style was developed. Thisscheme is based on the high order Pad?? type compact central finite differencemethod with the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) reconstruction toeliminate non-physical oscillations near the discontinuities while maintain stablesolution in the smooth areas. The unconditionally stable semi-implicit Crank-Nicolson (CN) scheme is used for time integration. The theoretical development was conducted based on one-dimensionalhomogeneous scalar equation and system equations. Discussions were alsoextended to include source terms and to deal with problems of higher dimension. For the treatment of source terms, Strang splitting was used. For multidimensionalequations, the ?? -form Douglas-Gunn alternating direction implicit(ADI) method was employed. To compare the performance of the scheme withENO type interpolation, the current numerical framework was also applied usingENO reconstruction. The numerical schemes were tested on 1-D and 2-D benchmark problems,as well as published experimental results. The simulated results show thecapability of the proposed scheme to resolve discontinuities while maintainingaccuracy in smooth regions. Comparisons with the experimental results validatethe method for dam break problems. It is concluded that the proposed scheme isa useful tool for solving hyperbolic equations in general, and from engineeringapplication perspective it provides a new way of modeling open channel flows.

Ismail, Roslan. "Security of reputation systems." Queensland University of Technology, 2004. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15964/.

Full text
Abstract:
Reputation systems have the potential of improving the quality of on-line markets by identifying fraudulent users and subsequently dealing with these users can be prevented. The behaviour of participants involved in e-commerce can be recorded and then this information made available to potential transaction partners to make decisions to choose a suitable counterpart. Unfortunately current reputation systems suffer from various vulnerabilities. Solutions for many of these problems will be discussed. One of the major threats is that of unfair feedback. A large number of negative or positive feedbacks could be submitted to a particular user with the aim to either downgrade or upgrade the user's reputation. As a result the produced reputation does not reflect the user's true trustworthiness. To overcome this threat a variation of Bayesian Reputation system is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on the subjective logic framework proposed Josang et al. [65]. The impact of unfair feedback is countered through some systematic approaches proposed in the scheme. Lack of anonymity for participants leads to reluctance to provide negative feedback. A novel solution for anonymity of feedback providers is proposed to allow participants to provide negative feedback when appropriate without fear of retaliation. The solution is based on several primitive cryptographic mechanisms; e-cash, designated verifier proof and knowledge proof. In some settings it is desirable for the reputation owner to control the distribution of its own reputation and to disclose this at its discretion to the intended parties. To realize this, a solution based on a certificate mechanism is proposed. This solution allows the reputation owner to keep the certificate and to distribute its reputation while not being able to alter that information without detection. The proposed solutions cater for two modes of reputation systems: centralised and decentralised. The provision of an off-line reputation system is discussed by proposing a new solution using certificates. This is achieved through the delegation concept and a variant of digital signature schemes known as proxy signatures. The thesis presents a security architecture of reputation systems which consists of different elements to safeguard reputation systems from malicious activities. Elements incorporated into this architecture include privacy, verifiability and availability. The architecture also introduces Bayesian approach to counter security threat posed by reputation systems. This means the proposed security architecture in the thesis is a combination of two prominent approaches, namely, Bayesian and cryptographic, to provide security for reputation systems. The proposed security architecture can be used as a basic framework for further development in identifying and incorporating required elements so that a total security solution for reputation systems can be achieved.

Abstract:
The purpose of this case study is to use Ian Manner’s normative power theory and Adrian Hyde-Price’s neo-realism theory, in order to explain the Visegrad countries’ resistance against the EU relocation. There is great tension within the EU on how to handle the migration and refugee crisis. The efforts to establish EU relocation plan were extremely controversial since the European Commission adopted legislation directly related to territorial integrity and state sovereignty through qualified majority. The main opponents of the relocation scheme are the Visegrad group (Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia). This paper concluded that Ian Manner’s theory on Normative Power Europe is limited in explaining the Member States resistance, rather Adrian Hyde-Price’s theory on neorealism is more accurate in explaining the resistance.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is using theories about labeling and social bonds to study whether a measure of rehabilitation for the psychically disabled contributes to a return to a normal status as not-labeled. Partly we examine whether the activities organized by the regulation-ruled authorities during the work of rehabilitation lead to shame or pride, and partly how these activities are organized regarding the processes that lead to the emotions pride or shame among the participants. Method: qualitative semi-structured face-to-face interviews with professional rehabilitation-actors at the Public Employment Office (PEO), the Social Insurance Office (SIO), the Social Service (SOS), the Psychiatry and the Division of Labour Market (AME).Conclusions: the Psychiatry clients are treated with respect, may participate, and communication is characterized by attunement, therefore strong social bonds can be built. On the contrary, among the other examined activities, we found many elements that arouse shame. Since these are more ruled by regulations, the result is engulfment and demands on conformity, because the compromise-possibilities are almost non-existent. Psychically disabled persons are met by prejudice, ignorance, disrespect and a non-solidarity-language. To get help, the individual has to accept a label in form of a diagnosis, and this labeling leads to a negative self-image. Furthermore the psychically disabled persons are falling between two chairs because of a weak cooperation between the rehabilitation-actors. Bimodal alienation and triangulation contributes to the difficulties in cooperation.Result: the social bonds are not strong enough to achieve a rehabilitation-effect. Even if the treatment from each administrator is important, we find the explanation-level primarily in laws, rules and government, because the structure rules the rehabilitation-measures, with shame as a consequence. Since we found elements of shame institutionalized in the way of working at PEO, SIO, SOS and AME, it means that social bonds can never reach a level good enough for achieving pride and normalization from a deviance or labeled identity.

Abstract:
Traditionally, dynamically-typed languages have been difficult to compile efficiently. This thesis explores dynamic compilation, a recently developed technique for compiling dynamically-typed languages. A dynamic compiler compiles and optimizes programs as they execute, using information collected from the running program to perform optimizations that are impossible to perform in a conventional batch compiler. To explore these techniques we developed SKI, a dynamic compiler for Scheme. Tests on programs compiled by SKI, have shown that dynamic compilation techniques can give a substantial increase in the performance Scheme programs. In some cases they can increase performance by up to 400%.

It is a well-recognized fact that control saturation affects virtually all practical control systems. It leads to controller windup, which degrades/limits the system's closed-loop performance, and may cause catastrophic failures if it induces instability. Anti-windup compensation is one of two main approaches to mitigate the effects of windup, and is conceptually and practically attractive. For the idealized case of constrained linear time invariant (LTI) plants driven by LTI controllers, numerous anti-windup schemes exist. However, most practical control systems are inherently nonlinear, and anti-windup compensation for nonlinear systems remains largely an open problem. To this end, we propose the gradient projection anti-windup (GPAW) scheme, which is an extension of the conditional integration method to multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear systems, using Rosen's gradient projection method for nonlinear programming. It achieves controller state-output consistency by projecting the controller state onto the unsaturated region induced by the control saturation constraints. The GPAW-compensated controller is a hybrid controller defined by the online solution to either a combinatorial optimization subproblem, a convex quadratic program, or a projection onto a convex polyhedral cone problem. We show that the GPAW-compensated system is obtained by modifying the uncompensated system with a passive operator. Qualitative weaknesses of some existing anti-windup results are established, which motivated a new paradigm to address the anti-windup problem. It is shown that for a constrained first order LTI plant driven by a first order LTI controller, GPAW compensation can only maintain/enlarge its region of attraction (ROA). In this new paradigm, we derived some ROA comparison and stability results for MIMO nonlinear as well as MIMO LTI systems. The thesis is not that the GPAW scheme solves a centuries-old open problem of immense practical importance, but rather, that it provides a potential path to a solution. We invite the reader to join us in this quest at the confluence of nonlinear systems, hybrid systems, projected dynamical systems, differential equations with discontinuous right-hand sides, combinatorial optimization, convex analysis and optimization, and passive systems.

In this thesis, we present a framework for writing distributed computer programs in Scheme using simple "future" semantics. This allows a Scheme program originally written for execution on a single computer to be run in a distributed manner on a cluster of computers with very little modification to the program. The structure of the computation can be extremely general and need not be specified in advance. In order to provide this programming environment, we implemented a system of job execution servers which transparently execute arbitrary Scheme code written in a functional or mostly functional style. The use of a functional, side effect free style of programming simplifies the challenges of data consistency. A number of demonstrations of the system are presented, including a distributed SAT solver. The performance of the system is shown to increase roughly linearly with the number of servers employed.

Abstract:
The environmental issues receive more attention by the day, which results in a greater interest in renewable energy sources and ways of making the delivery and usage of energy more efficient. One solution that has emerged is microgrids, selfsufficient electrical grids containing renewable energy sources and loads. A microgrid can either operate on its own or as a part of larger grid, depending on energy availability. The aim of this project was to develop a protection algorithm and deploy it on a cheap microcontroller. The protection algorithm should ensure that faults occurring in the microgrid were detected and handled, in both operating modes. A model of a microgrid in both operating modes was created. The protection algorithm was applied to the model in a real time simulator to verify that the algorithm took action against faults. By introducing faults to the circuit, we could demonstrate that the algorithm performed as expected. We concluded that it is possible to deploy a basic adaptive protection scheme on a cheap microcontroller. Also, that a flawless protection scheme for a microgrid is of high value if the use of microgrids will continue to grow.

Sumalee, Agachai. "Optimal road pricing scheme design." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2004. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/737/.

Full text
Abstract:
There are two main approaches to designing road pricing schemes. The first is judgmental in nature and focuses on the acceptability and practicality of the scheme. The second is based on theory concentrating on the optimality and performance of the scheme. This research aimed to integrate these two approaches into a single framework and to develop a tool to aid the decision maker in designing a practical and optimal road pricing scheme. A review of the practical design criteria and a survey with six local authorities in the U. K. were conducted to clarify the concept of the judgmental design. A simple charging scheme like a charging cordon is believed to be the most practical charging regime due to its simple structure. The decision on the boundary and structure of the cordon is based largely on public acceptability and possible adverse impacts. Road pricing is used to serve several objectives including congestion reduction, revenue generation, and increase in efficiency of the transport system. The framework for the theoretical optimal toll design problem adopted was a Stackelberg game where the travellers' behaviour were assumed to follow the concept of Wardrop's user equilibrium. This problem can also be formed as a Mathematical Program with Equilibrium Constraint (MPEC). After reviewing various methods for solving the MPEC problem, three possible methods (the merit function method, improved cutting plane algorithm, and Genetics Algorithm (GA) based algorithm) were developed and tested with the optimal toll problem. The GA based algorithm was found to be the most appropriate for the development of the design algorithm with practical constraints. Three different features of the judgmental design were included into the optimisation algorithm: the closed cordon formation, constraints on the outcomes of the scheme, and the allowance for multiple objectives. An algorithm was developed to find the optimal cordon with an optimal uniform toll. It is also capable of designing a scheme with multiple cordons. The algorithms for solving the constrained optimal cordon design problem and the multiobjective cordon design problem were also developed. The algorithm developed for the multiobjective problem allows the application of the posterior and progressive preference articulation approach by generating the set of non-dominated solutions. The algorithms were tested with a network of Edinburgh. The results revealed several policy implications. Adopting a judgmental cordon with a simple uniform toll may be less effective. A variable optimised toll around the judgmental cordon can generate around 70% more benefit than the optimal uniform toll. The optimised location of a cordon generated about 80% higher benefit compared to the best judgmental cordon. Additional constraints such as a maximum of total travel time decreased the level of the benefit of the scheme by 90%. Different objectives may require different designs for the charging cordon scheme. The welfare maximisation cordon should focus on those trips contributing most to the social welfare function which are mainly in the congested areas with an appropriate toll level. The revenue maximisation cordon should impose a higher number of crossing points and minimise possible diversion routes to avoid the tolls which should be high. The equity cordon should cover a wider area of the network with low toll level to ensure a good distribution of the cost and benefit to all origin-destination pairs. The algorithms developed can offer support to the decision maker in developing a charging cordon scheme by formalising the process of charging cordon design. This will increase the transferability of the technique and the transparency of the decision process.

Abstract:
In general we know that the fixed point locus of a 1-dimensional additive linear algebraic group,G_{a}, action over a complete nonsingular variety is connected. In thesis, we explicitly identify a subset of the G_{a}-fixed locus of the punctual Hilbert scheme of the d points,Hilb^{d}(P^{2}
0),in P^{2}. In particular we give an other proof of the fact that Hilb^{d}(P^{2}
0) is connected.

A mixture experiment is an experiment in which the q-ingredients {xi,i=1,...,q} are nonnegative and subject to the simplex restriction sum_{i=1}^q x_i=1 on the (q-1)-dimensional probability simplex S^{q-1}. In this work, we investigate the robust D-optimal designs for mixture experiments with consideration on uncertainties in the Scheffe''s linear, quadratic and cubic model without 3-way effects. The D-optimal designs for each of the Scheffe''s models are used to find the robust D-optimal designs. With uncertianties on the Scheffe''s linear and quadratic models, the optimal convex combination of the two model''s D-optimal designs can be proved to be a robust D-optimal design. For the case of the Scheffe''s linear and cubic model without 3-way effects, we have some numerical results about the robust D-optimal designs, as well as that for Scheffe''s linear, quadratic and cubic model without 3-way effects. Ultimately, we discuss the efficiency of a maxmin type criterion D_r under given the robust D-optimal designs for the Scheffe''s linear and quadratic models.

A mixture experiment is an experiments in which the q-ingredients are nonnegative and subject to the simplex restriction on the (q-1)-dimentional probability simplex. In this work , we investigate the robust A-optimal designs for mixture experiments with uncertainty on the linear, quadratic models considered by Scheffe'' (1958). In Chan (2000), a review on the optimal designs including A-optimal designs are presented for each of the Scheffe''s linear and quadratic models. We will use these results to find the robust A-optimal design for the linear and quadratic models under some robust A-criteria. It is shown with the two types of robust A-criteria defined here, there exists a convex combination of the individual A-optimal designs for linear and quadratic models respectively to be robust A-optimal. In the end, we compare efficiencies of these optimal designs with respect to different A-criteria.

The exact D-optimal design problems for regression models has been in-vestigated in many literatures. Huang (1987) and Gaffke (1987) provided a sufficient condition for the minimum sample size for an certain set of candidate designs to be exact D-optimal for polynomial regression models on a compact interval. In this work we consider a mixture experiment with q nonnegative components, where the proportions of components are sub- ject to the simplex restriction $sum_{i=1}^q x_i =1$, $x_i ≧ 0$. The exact D-optimal designs for mixture experiments for Scheffe’s quadratic models are investigated. Based on results in Kiefer (1961) results about the exact D-optimal designs for mixture models with two or three ingredients are provided and numerical verifications for models with ingredients between four and nine are presented.

Abstract:
The unique problems encountered when analyzing weather data sets - that is, measurements taken while conducting a meteorological experiment- have forced statisticians to reconsider the conventional analysis methods and investigate permutation test procedures. The problems encountered when analyzing weather data sets are simulated for a Monte Carlo study, and the results of the parametric and permutation t-tests are compared with regard to significance level, power, and the average coilfidence interval length. Seven population distributions are considered - three are variations of the normal distribution, and the others the gamma, the lognormal, the rectangular and empirical distributions. The normal distribution contaminated with zero measurements is also simulated. In those simulated situations in which the variances are unequal, the permutation test procedure was performed using other test statistics, namely the Scheffe, Welch and Behrens-Fisher test statistics.

Abstract:
I describe the design and implementation plans for a computer that is optimized as a microcoded interpreter for Scheme. The computer executes SCode, a typed-pointer representation. The memory system has low-latency as well as high throughput. Multiple execution units in the processor complete complex operations in less than one memory cycle, allowing efficient use of memory bandwidth. The processor provides hardware support for tagged data objects and runtime type checking. I will discuss the motivation for this machine, its architecture, why it can interpret Scheme efficiently, and the computer-aided design tools developed for building this computer.
