Abstract:

Abstract:
In the nineteenth century the unrestricted application of the historical-critical method posed an unprecedented challenge to inherited Christian notions about the Bible. While this challenge was eventually to be felt most acutely in the study of the New Testament (nt) once the distinction between the “Jesus of history” and the “Christ of faith” had firmly established itself, traditional viewpoints on the Old Testament (ot) were actually the first to be called into question. As a consequence of historical investigation, it became increasingly difficult for theologians to claim that the gospel is already taught in the ot. Regarding this matter, Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768–1834) made a bold proposal. He argued against the canonical standing of the ot on the grounds that it expresses Jewish, not Christian, religion. For him this conclusion was the unavoidable result of the advancing critical scholarship that was undermining the christological exegesis used to defend the church's claim to the ot against the synagogue's counter-claim to its sole rightful possession. Opposing such “christianizing” readings, Schleiermacher broke ranks from Christian theologians and championed the side of the Jews in this historic debate. His only predecessors in this regard were Marcion and the Socinians, although his proposal for relegating the ot to noncanonical status was later endorsed by Adolf von Harnack.

Abstract:

Abstract: In this paper, the theories of the civitas maxima (universal state) in the work of Christian Wolff (1679–1754) and Michael Christoph Hanov (1695–1773) are investigated. Topics are the layers of international law, the concept and constitution of the universal state, utopian elements, the ontological status of the universal state, conversion of other states, and migration. As a critical counterpart, the idea of nation is explored in these authors as well as in the political theories of romanticism, namely in Adam Müller (1779–1829) and Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768–1834).

It focuses on the aspects of Schleiermacher’s life and work that have influenced the author the most. The article consists of personal annotations, Schleiermacher’s understanding of ‘divine’ hermeneutics, his notion of congeniality and his ‘subscription’ to creedal Christianity while promoting the freedom of the exegete to interpret the Bible and ecclesiastical confessions robustly and critically.

The heritage of Johann Gottfried von Herder (17441803), Friedrich Schleiermacher (17681834) and William James (18421910) is of significance for practical theology. In present-day pastoral care, affect, emotion, feeling and experience are explored by means of, amongst others, narrative theories. In his aesthetics, Herder linked music and literature. Schleiermacher, in his aesthetics, linked his theology of feeling with biography as narrative. Narrativity is central to present-day are theories and praxis in pastoral care. The variety of forms of affect, namely emotion, experience, feeling and mood, has been explored by present-day psychology and psychiatry. These insights can enrich narrative pastoral theories and praxis.

Abstract:
AbstractArguments about the concept of adequacy (›Angemessenheit‹) of interpretation are as constitutive for many hermeneutic theories of meaning as they are for the interpretive praxis derived from these theories. This essay seeks to illustrate by way of exemplary approaches by Georg Friedrich Meier (1718–1777), Johann Martin Chladenius (1710–1759) and Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768–1834) that very different notions are prevalent within hermeneutics as to what counts as an adequate interpretation. For instance, the ascription ofThe goal of the following elaborations is not, however, a (linguistic) historical derivation of diverse forms of ›Angemessenheit‹. By means of a complex example for the interpretive deployment of (il-)legitimate anachronisms, the semantic conceptions of the three hermeneuticists mentioned above will be exemplified and analyzed with respect to the question of which bids for a specificallyUsing the scheme »a is suitable for b with respect to c«, we can with some clarity reconstruct the problem areas (among others, author, spatiotemporal contexts, reader, hypothetical reader models) associated with adequacy on the interpretive and theoretical levels. However, it will also be shown that a field of reference for arguments about adequacy which limits the scope of statements (»with reference to c«) is seldom explicated. It has to be deduced from precisely those premises which are axiomatic for a specific theory and its conception of meaning. If we compare the explicit arguments, the argumentative fields of reference, and the axiomatic premises of each hermeneutic with one another, we can very clearly prove that 1) there is noAgainst this background, a position can be taken with regard to the two arguments discussed repeatedly over the course of the essay: i) Arguments for adequacy are to be understood as hermeneutic topics and can in this way count as unproblematic aspects of theories of meaning. ii) Arguments for adequacy provide – contrary to i) – references to a previously insufficiently reflected type of argument in literary studies that hardly provides a solution to historically determined difficulties of understanding. The argumentative reference to specifically historical adequacy certainly invokes the central problems of a conception of meaning, but it does not explicate the strategies for solving them. The vagueness that results from such an attempt at reconstructive explication not only indicates the insufficient reflection of this type of argumentation (thesis ii). It also raises the question of whether adequacy – just like plausibility (cf. Winko 2015) – as a

His philosophy of religion, his hermeneutics and his dialectics deserve the most attention. We want to give an overview of his philosophical and theological thoughts. A dialectical and architectonic approach is presented. The center of his Work is his dialectics as method of construction of knowledge, as philosophy of mind, logic, and philosophy of science. Ndeh, Dominique.

Abstract:
Religion and Ethic is a research in philosophy of religion, which doesn’t construct a religion of reason, but thinks the real religion. Supported by Schleiermacher’s Discours sur la religion (1768-1834), which is read in an integral and actualising way, the research demonstrates that a better understanding of religion must be achieved by the establishment of a dialogue with Ethics, history and human sciences such as sociology and psychology. The clarication of the terms: philosophy of religion, philosophical theology and religious philosophy constitutes the fisrt step of the thesis. It then moves on to determine the position of religion within the system of knowledge, and places the hermeneutic principle of fusion of horizons intagrating appropriation and distanciation. So as to avoid the denaturation of religion by philosophy, the tautegorical approach, which puts forward that religion should be understood by itself, is adopted as method of investigation. For Schleiermacher, religion is intuition of the universe and sentiment. It implies two versants, one subjective and other objective. Founded upon the immediate consciousness of the seft, which ensures its autonomy, religion doesn’t need the mediation of moral and methaphysic to exist. Nevertheless, it manifests itself through communitarian expression. It is through the diversity of religion that the essence of religion emerges in history. Religion is only effective through man since it cannot be without a religious subject. The thesis considers man as hermeneutic site of religion and claims that the reason of religion lays in being a hermeneutic of human existence

In this dissertation I retrace the notion of social individuality in early German liberal thought to respond to the ongoing criticism of liberal individuality as being at its foundation anti-social and atomistic. I concentrate on the exposition of this concept in the works of Wilhelm von Humboldt and Friedrich Schleiermacher at the turn of the 18th to 19th century, who I argue presented the clearest defense of individuality understood as interdependent uniqueness. Analyzing their relevant academic writings, speeches, sermons, letters, diary entries as well as political reports, I situate their conceptualization of social individuality within their wider thought, and examine what social institutions and practices as well as political consequences derive from understanding individuality as inherently social.

Eckerson, Sara Ellen. "Beethoven's Dolce : interpretation, performance, and description - The case of music." Doctoral thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/26128.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to describe the role of Beethoven’s dolce indications in the staves of a musical score. We will thus explore Beethoven’s dolce in contexts of theoretical interpretation, performance, and critical descriptions of meaning in music. We first will examine performance practice and Beethoven’s dolce indications in a symphonic setting (Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 55, “Eroica”) and in piano sonatas. We will highlight historical and current performance practice to find grounds for the unique way Beethoven uses expressive indications (for example, dolce, cantabile, and espressivo) in the staff. The second part of this dissertation will investigate nineteenth century hermeneutics and Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher’s hermeneutic theory to show the resonances between the critical activity of interpreting texts and the activity of interpreting and performing music. In the final part of this dissertation, we will discuss a critical method developed by the theorist, pedagogue, and music historian Adolf Bernhard Marx (1795-1866). Marx determines this critical method in the context of how to explicate meaning in instrumental music, which is namely through simile, symbolism, and psychological coherence. We will conclude this dissertation by describing the importance of material considerations in A. B. Marx’s theory of a musical Idee. Furthermore, we will comment on the role of the Idee as a bridge between the material considerations required for performance practice and the “spiritual” activity that is needed to explore deeper meaning in music.
