Bagheri, Amirhossein. "Preliminary Analysis of an Innovative Rotary Displacer Stirling Engine." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2015. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc822801/.

Full text
Abstract:
Stirling engines are an external combustion heat engine that converts thermal energy into mechanical work that a closed cycle is run by cyclic compression and expansion of a work fluid (commonly air or Helium) in which, the working fluid interacts with a heat source and a heat sink and produces network. The engine is based on the Stirling cycle which is a subset of the Carnot cycle. The Stirling cycle has recently been receiving renewed interest due to some of its key inherent advantages. In particular, the ability to operate with any form of heat source (including external combustion, flue gases, alternative (biomass, solar, geothermal) energy) provides Stirling engines a great flexibility and potential benefits since it is convinced as engines running with external heat sources. However, several aspects of traditional Stirling engine configurations (namely, the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma), specifically complexity of design, high cost, and relatively low power to size and power to volume ratios, limited their widespread applications to date. This study focuses on an innovative Stirling engine configuration that features a rotary displacer (as opposed to common reciprocating displacers), and aims to utilize analytical and numerical analysis to gain insights on its operation parameters. The results are expected to provide useful design guidelines towards optimization. The present study starts with an overview of the Stirling cycle and Stirling engines including both traditional and innovative rotary displacer configurations, and their major advantages and disadvantages. The first approach considers an ideal analytical model and implements the well-known Schmidt analysis assumptions for the rotary displacer Stirling engine to define the effects of major design and operation parameters on the performance. The analytical model resulted in identifying major variables that could affect the engine performance (such as the dead volume spaces, temperature ratios and the leading phase angle). It was shown that the dead volume could have a drastic effect over the engine performance and the optimum phase angle of the engine is 90o. The second approach considers a non-ideal analytical model and aims to identify and account the main sources of energy losses in the cycle to better represent the engine performance. The study showed that the ideal efficiency and the non-ideal efficiency could have 15% difference that could have as an enormous effect on the engine performance.

Abstract:
Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of disorders that affect the brain. These diseases are related with changes in the brain that lead to loss of brain structure or loss of neurons, including the dead of some neurons. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most well-known neurodegenerative diseases. Nowadays there is no cure for this disease. However, there are some medicaments that may delay the symptoms if they are used during the first stages of the disease, otherwise they have no effect. Therefore early diagnose is presented as a key factor. This PhD thesis works different aspects related with neuroscience, in order to develop new methods for the early diagnose of AD. Different aspects have been investigated, such as signal preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection and its classification.

Abstract:
As part of safety studies for nuclear reactors, numerical simulators are essential for understanding, modelling and predicting physical phenomena. However, the information on some of the input variables of the simulator is often limited or uncertain. In this framework, Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) aims at determining how the variability of the input parameters affects the value of the output or the quantity of interest. The work carried out in this thesis aims at proposing new statistical methods based on dependence measures for GSA of numerical simulators. We are particularly interested in HSIC-type dependence measures (Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion). After Chapters 1 and 2 introducing the general context and motivations of the thesis in French and English versions respectively, Chapter 3 first presents a general review of HSIC measures, in a theoretical and methodological framework. Subsequently, new developments around the estimation of HSIC measures from an alternative sample and inspired by importance sampling techniques are proposed. As a result of these theoretical developments, an efficient methodology for GSA in the presence of uncertainties of input probability distributions is developed in Chapter 4. The relevance of the proposed methodology is first demonstrated on an analytical case before being applied to the MACARENa simulator modeling a ULOF (Unprotected Loss Of Flow) accidental scenario on a sodium-cooled fast neutron reactor. Finally, Chapter 5 deals with the development of an independence test aggregating several parametrizations of HSIC kernels and allowing to capture a wider spectrum of dependencies between the inputs and the output. The optimality of this methodology is first demonstrated from a theoretical point of view. Then, its performance and practical interest are illustrated on several analytical examples as well as on the test case of the MACARENa simulator

Abstract:
The Gulf of Tunis, under high anthropogenic pressure, is a favorable terrain for harmful benthic dinoflagellate blooms (BHABs). Seasonal monitoring of the spatial and temporal distribution of epiphytic and planktonic microalgae coupled with environmental factors was studied for one year from october 2013 to october 2014 at 6 stations in the Gulf of Tunis. Harmful microalgae assemblages were dominated by three toxic epiphytic dinoflagellates: Ostreopsis sp., Prorocentrum lima and Coolia monotis. They were observed both in macrophytes and in the water column. The proliferation of Ostreopsis sp. is widespread in summer and blooms of P. lima and C. monotis were mainly recorded in spring. The morphometric analysis of Ostreopsis cells revealed a large variability in cell size at the different sampling stations of the Gulf. The dorso-ventral to antero-posterior diameter (DV/AP) ratio also varies from station to another. A weekly monitoring of the spatial and temporal distribution of Ostreopsis cf. ovata epiphytic and planktonic coupled with environmental factors was studied during 2015 and 2016 summer seasons at 5 stations in the Gulf of Tunis. The blooms were mainly detected between July and August. The concentrations of Ostreopsis cf. ovata measured are the highest ever recorded on the Tunisian coasts (9,91 × 105 cell. g-1 MF on macroalgae ; 5,11 × 105 cell. dm-3 in the water column). Ostreopsis cf. ovata peaks were observed when salinity and water temperature reached their high values, and when nitrites, nitrates, total nitrogen and silicates concentrations were low. Spatial variation is observed along the Gulf coast, suggesting that some sampling stations appear more favorable to the development of Ostreopsis cf. ovata than others. The alternative counting approaches MOL and OPR of Ostreopsis cf. ovata, implemented during the M3-HABs project and tested in this study, are in good agreement with the manual counting results. A predictive model of Quantile Random Forests type was used and could describe the abundance of Ostreopsis cf. ovata in the water column and macrophytes in response to 10 meteorological variables used within this model

Today, Scenes from the Life of a Faun and The Shadow of the Coachman’s Body are considered as major works of the 20th century German literature ; originally however, at the beginning of the 1950s, they were rather isolated in the German-language literary landscape – to such an extent that Peter Weiss’ text was not even published until 1960. The present work analyses the two auto-diegetic narratives by choosing the following axes of comparison : the tension between the narrator’s voice and the voice of the authorial, non anthropomorphic instance ; the networks of metaphors with poetological implications and, above all, the interaction between the abounding descriptive micro-sequences and the narrative macro-sequences, somewhat hidden behind the descriptions but nonetheless and undeniably present. By following these tracks, the analysis shows the aesthetic-political implications of the two texts ; echoing with either romantic and myth-like (as far as Scenes from the Life of a Faun is concerned) or surrealist and Freudian (The Shadow of the Coachman’s Body) intertexts, each of the texts raises a specific ‘explosive’ question, neglected or avoided by the dominant literary production. Thus, Arno Schmidt’s convulsive idyll asks : What is the price to pay for a fictional narrative about the Nazi-years if it is not willing to give up the pleasures of the metaphor ? And Peter Weiss’ matter-of-fact psycho-drama : What is it that post-war German literature keeps out by focusing entirely on the outlines of the exterior world and by relying on a supposedly non-metaphorical language with stable meanings ?
