Abstract:
The theme of alienation in the novels of Karel SchoemanThe state of alienation is one of the overriding themes in Karel Schoeman's oeuvre. This article, “The theme of alienation in the novels of Karel Schoeman”, deals with one of the manifestations of this theme, namely the dilemma of alienation. The world presented in Karel Schoeman's oeuvre is characterized by dichotomy, e.g. the known as opposed to the unknown - a phenomenon which causes uncertainty. This article examines the way in which an epistemological dichotomy is expressed as a kind of dilemma in the novels of Karel Schoeman. The dilemma is presented to discourage a simple escape by means of choice. In this position between alternative worlds or views, the Schoeman character faces limited options: to make a choice of sorts and win or risk sacrificing something of value; to accept this precarious position and confirm his life as one of passive silence; to conquer the impasse, e.g. by sidestepping the choice and creating an alternative world as in a dream or a work of art.

Abstract:
Tradition and renewal – Hierdie lewe by Karel Schoeman Since the sixties generalizations have frequently been made regarding the difference between old (older, traditional) and new (newer, "modem") Afrikaans prose. Karel Schoeman’s novel Hierdie lewe (1993), however, shows the relativity of the dichotomy old vs. new prose. The theme of this novel is fairly traditional: a reminiscence of a life of hardship and loneliness in the South African platteland. Nevertheless the formalization of this theme is not that of the "gemoedelike lokale realisme" (a genial local realism) which N.P. van Wyk Louw referred to. The on-going process of “making strange/making unfamiliar” (Victor Shklovsky) is achieved by a specific style of writing. The novel’s merit lies in the fact that Schoeman, within the linguistic options available to him, within the focus of the chosen narrative perspective, and within the time frame of the 19th century, exhibits considerable creative mastery of the language - despite the constraints presupposed by each of these contexts. It is an outstanding achievement that Schoeman could find so many parallels and synonyms and integrate them in a diffuse but systematic way in his comprehensive novel.

Abstract The article is a response to Heather Walton’s IAPT presidential address titled “A Theopoetics of Practice – Re-forming in Practical Theology.” Practices examined in this article are rituals and caring related to death and dying in literature. By making use of Ronald Grimes’ so-called fictive ritual the portrayal of rituals and caring in novels by the Afrikaans novelist Karel Schoeman are examined. As a response to Walton’s address, a theopoetics is developed from the ars moriendi in the work of Schoeman.

The World Spider Catalog (WSC 2016) currently lists Peucetia longipes Pocock, 1899 as a senior synonym of P. casseli Simon, 1899; according to Niekerk & Dippenaar-Schoeman (1994: 16). The synonymy decision per se is not to be doubted but, regarding the senior name choice, it was stated that “As both P. [Peucetia] longipes and P. casseli were described in 1899, we decided to give P. longipes priority over P. casseli as the former species was more often referred to in the literature.” So Niekerk & Dippenaar-Schoeman (1994) did not check the month or even the day of the two relevant publications.

Schoeman, Ockert. ""Failure" : a pastoral study / O. Schoeman." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/891.

Abstract:
This study deals with the role that 'failure' plays in the lives of people, as seen from a pastoral-theological perspective. In this respect, a number of questions presented themselves, including; How the phenomenon known as 'failure' is viewed within the community of the secular sciences? How is the phenomenon known as 'failure' viewed from a Biblical point of view? Can 'failure' be reversed and turned into something beneficial? In the secular world, a 'failure' is seen as someone who does not live up to expectations, or to a person who continually make mistakes and who does not learn from the experience. There is scant room in the secular world for 'failure', and there is an enormous amount of pressure on individuals in society to be 'successful.' This peer pressure to conform to certain expectations carries with it a corresponding fear of 'failure', and therefore being rejected by society. Scripture would appear to view 'failure' in a more lenient light, but at the same time, carries a wider connotation to 'failure' than society does. The purpose of this study is to investigate what is meant by 'failure', both from a basis-theoretical and a meta-theoretical perspective, in accordance with Zerfass's model, in order to develop a counselling model, designed to assist counsellors in the counselling of people who suffer from the effects of 'failure'. The basis-theoretical part of this study found that Scripture does not recognise the phenomenon we call 'failure', apart from man missing God's mark, and sinning. The greatest, or worst form of 'failure' encountered in Scripture is indicative of the sinner not accepting the redemptive work of Christ, and being condemned to perish in eternal damnation. What is colloquially known as 'failure', Scripture treats as stepping stones to success and sanctification. The meta-theoretical part of this investigation brought up an interesting thought: that 'failure' was learned behaviour, a negative set of values that society impresses upon individuals to they must conform to. Where 'failure' is experienced, society teaches the person to cope with 'failure' by utilizing inherent strengths and negating weaknesses, rather than exploring the 'failure' in an endeavour to mine the salient values that are present. From an empirical research, using hermeneutic-phenomenological principles, a model was developed that is intended to assist the counsellor in reversing counselee 'failure' into success. The conclusion of this research is that while broader society may not have an answer to 'failure', pastoral-theology is perfectly positioned to assist with the counselling of people who deem themselves to be 'failures’.

Abstract:
Alternative energy sources are needed if the current use of energy is to be sustained while reducing global warming. A possible alternative energy source that has significant potential is hydrogen. For hydrogen to become a serious contender for replacing fossil fuels, the production thereof has to be further investigated. One such process, the membrane–based Hybrid Sulphur (HyS) process, where hydrogen is produced from the electrolysis of SO2, has received considerable interest recently. Since H2SO4 is formed during SO2 electrolysis, H2SO4 stability is a prerequisite for any membrane to be used in this process. In this study, pure as well as high and low temperature blended polybenzimidazole (PBI), partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether) (sFS) and nonfluorinated poly(arylene ethersulphone) (sPSU) membranes were investigated in terms of their acid stability as a function of acid concentration by treating them in H2SO4 (30, 60 and 90wt%) for 120h at 1bar pressure. The high temperature blend membranes contain the basic polymer in excess (70 wt% basic PBI and 30wt% acid sPSU/sFS polymer) and require acid doping in order to conduct protons. In the doped state they are able to conduct protons up to 200°C. The low temperature blend membranes are also composed of the same PBI polymer used in the high temperature membranes, as well as the same acidic polymers with one of the membranes containing a fluorinated polymer and the other a nonfluorinated polymer (sFS or sPSU) in excess. These membranes do not require any acid doping to conduct protons but they are only stable at temperatures below 80°C. High temperature blend membranes were characterised using through–plane conductivity, GPC and IEC, whilst low temperature membranes were characterised using in–plane and through–plane proton conductivity, weight change, TGA, GPC, SEM, EDX and IEC techniques. The conductivity determination techniques (especially the in–plane technique) proved to be cumbersome, whilst all the other analysis techniques were deemed appropriate. H2SO4 exposure had a destabilising effect on the PBI membrane which presented as weight gain at the 30 and 60wt% H2SO4 concentrations due to salt formation and dissolution at the 90wt% acid treatment due to sulphonation. In the sFS membrane dissolution was observed at 30 and 60wt% as a result of oligomer loss that occurred during the post treatment washing process and partial dissolution, as a result of sulphonation, at the 90wt% treated membrane. The sPSU membrane showed great stability at 30 and 60wt%, though dissolution was observed at 90wt% because of membrane sulphonation due to a lack of fluorination. The sFS–PBI membrane blend proved to be stable with only slight degradation taking place at 90wt% treatment due to sulphonation. Similarly the sPSU–PBI blend membrane showed great stability at the 30 and 60wt% H2SO4 treatment concentrations however total dissolution occurred at 90wt% treatment again due to a lack of fluorination. Although both the low temperature blended membranes showed superb stability to H2SO4 concentrations expected in the SO2 electrolyser (30–40wt%), the low temperature blended sFS–PBI membrane seemed slightly more stable over the H2SO4 treatment concentration range (30–90wt%), due to the protective role of the fluorinated polymer. The superior acid stability of this membrane could prove vital for proper SO2 electrolysis, especially for prolonged periods of operation

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to produce an English translation of the first part of Karel Schoeman's novel Hierdie lewe, translated as This Life. The thought processes of the translator are illustrated by means of descriptive annotations. The choice of source text is motivated and the specifications of the target text are formulated. The problem is stated that relatively few of Schoeman's fictional works have been translated into English or other languages and it is suggested that this might be because Schoeman's work is difficult to translate, or even untranslatable. A possible reason for this may be Schoeman's distinctive style: rhythmic, lyrical and rich in imagery. The source culture may also be too specific and the cultural gap too wide. A hypothesis is formulated that translation is possible if the translational problems are identified. Certain strategies are devised and solutions suggested. A hermeneutic interpretation of the source text and an overall strategy of resistancy are advocated, resulting in a target text with a marked source-text inscription. However, a measure of domestication is unavoidable in the light of the final goal to create an equivalent text which is still readable and will not alienate its addressees. A discussion of relevant concepts from translation studies theory substantiates and motivates the choice of translation strategies and solutions. A thorough reading analysis of the source text supplies the context for an interpretation. Descriptive annotations focus on the translator's methodology. Conclusions are drawn about the effectiveness of the chosen strategies and suggestions are made for further study.

Abstract:
The discovery of the electron microscope and the microscopic DNA, chromosome and gene had significantly increased the knowledge of the make-up and functioning of human beings. At the same time this new scientific discovery has confronted practical theology with a challenge that could not be ignored, and that is to determine if the genes of humans have any significant effect on their behaviour and therefore also on a marriage. The key theoretical argument of this study is that there are bio-social influences on the marriage and that pastoral counselling is uniquely equipped to effect change and healing in marriages that are debilitated by them. Base-theoretical perspectives indicate that: -The Word of God does not make direct mention of genetic influences, but does allow room for such a natural science discipline. -Despite the influence of genes on behaviour, the human is not acquitted of his responsibilities. -Change is possible by means of pastoral counselling under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. The meta-theoretical perspective on this subject indicates that the genes of humans are an important factor in the make-up and functioning of each person. Extracting data from the natural sciences field has largely illuminated the perspective on the functioning of humans and has provided a better understanding for certain aspects of behaviour. By means of synthesis of the Word and the natural sciences, practice theoretical guidelines are given for counselling, which counsellors can use to lead people to restoration, growth and happiness in their marriage.

Schoeman, Pieter Schalk. "Key biotic components of the indigenous Tortricidae and Heteroptera complexes occuring on macadamia in South Africa / by P.S. Schoeman." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/5007.

Full text
Abstract:
In South Africa macadamia nuts are attacked by a variety of mostly indigenous pests which can be divided into two basic complexes, namely a nut borer complex (consisting of 3 tortricid moths.) and a stink bug (Heteroptera) complex consisting of approximately 35 insect species. The Heteroptera complex causes approximately 60% damage in unsprayed orchards and the estimated annual heteropteran induced crop loss could be as high as R24 million. Gravid female tortricid moths could discriminate between various cultivars and significant differences regarding oviposition on the 17 macadamia cultivars that were evaluated became apparent. Incidence of larval damage early in the season was negligible and this complex may therefore largely be regarded as pests of large (mature) nuts. Kernel distance (combined husk and shell thickness) and early maturing cultivars were probably not the primary determinants of resistance and the presence of toxic cyanogenic secondary metabolic compounds in the nuts should be investigated as a future research priority. Hybrid cultivars as well as cultivar 800 appeared to be more prone to tortricid damage while cultivars 788, 294 and 741 were significantly less damaged. There were also significant differences amongst immature nuts regarding susceptibility of various cultivars towards the Heteroptera complex. It was speculated that kernel distance is not the primary determinant of resistance because the kernel distance in immature nuts is not large enough to offer protection for any cultivar. Stink bug induced damage to immature nuts was the highest for the cultivars 800 and 863 while cultivars 741, 816 and 788 suffered the lowest incidence of damage. When the adult nuts were evaluated, cultivar 600 and 741 suffered the lowest Heteroptera induced kernel damage. The resistance mechanism is unclear at the moment but involve more than one parameter. When the effects of various control strategies (fixed interval spraying and IPM) were compared, IPM compliant farms (farms that monitored and sprayed according to threshold levels) did considerably better. These results were hardly surprising as fixed interval spraying entails spraying trees irrespective of the economic threshold level. Because damaged nuts generally do not drop early and cannot be distinguished from undamaged nuts, any damage resulting from a mistimed spray (spray after economic threshold level has been reached) must therefore be regarded as additive and will be reflected in the unsound kernel reports of processors. Increasing tree density had a important positive effect on tortricid (r2 = 0.821) and Heteroptera (r2 = 0.922) damage. An effective pruning programme is therefore an important prerequisite for high density macadamia orchards. Populations of both pest complexes were heterogeneously distributed throughout the orchard and will adversely affect the accuracy of scouting procedures based on knockdown sprays if the quantity of data trees during weekly sampling is insufficient. Two theories for the formation of hot spots exist and are briefly discussed. Tortricids cause an estimated crop loss of approximately R3 million annually in South Africa alone. Although a number of larvae can be found inside the nuts relatively soon after anthesis, the majority of early larval damage occurs from ± 14 weeks post anthesis onwards. Eggs and recently eclosed first instar larvae should therefore be more numerous during the ninth week post anthesis. This would also be the most important period when an insecticide with a contact action has to be applied (late November). Oviposition occurred when nuts reached a mean medial diameter of ± 20mm but this relationship is coincidental and is more related to the phenology of macadamia trees (end of premature nut drop). Control strategy (IPM vs. fixed interval spraying) had inconclusive results as the IPM compliant farms suffered severe infestations when compared to fixed interval sprayed farms, as well as the organic and unsprayed farms. The success of tortricid control probably pivots around the November insecticide application. Tortricid larvae feeding on the insides of the pericarp may contribute significantly towards immaturity because feeding damage invariably severs the vascular tissue connecting the developing nut to the plant. The relative seasonal occurrence of heteropteran damage indicates that levels gradually increase in spring and taper off during mid January. Exclusion trials in an unsprayed orchard confirmed this observation and the apparent reduction in damage during January could probably be ascribed to the hardening of the shell at the same time. The damage profile of Bathycoelia natalicola was calculated and indicated that mouthpart lengths of fourth and fifth instar nymphs are probably sufficient to penetrate kernels of the Beaumont cultivar up to harvest. Compensation for early crop damage was studied and where Heteroptera damage was artificially simulated by flower removal, the trees were able to compensate for early crop damage. Compensation for Heteroptera damage was confirmed when early sprays were withheld on a semi commercial field trial. Withholding early sprays had no effect on tortricids as the initial spray of this pest complex has to be applied during late November which coincided with spray applications on all three spraying regimes that were tested. Due to asynchronous flowering the first Heteroptera spray should probably be applied before the end of October each year.

Abstract:
The literature review on tourist satisfaction revealed that a satisfied tourist leads to positive word of mouth recommendation to friends and family, loyalty (return visits), competitive advantage and long-term profitability and sustainability. These favourable benefits resulting from satisfaction are necessary for any destination to survive in the competitive tourism industry. The Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) is one of 21 national parks in South Africa and is managed by SANParks. Data captured from visitors to the (AENP) was used to achieve the objective of this study. As national, regional, local and privately owned parks (private game farms) strive to increase their share in the international and national market, it is important to understand why visitors return to a certain destination and the role service plays in the return decision. Literature on satisfaction identified two components that contribute to return visits. These were service (delivering quality service) and travel motivation (why people travel to a certain destination). The aim of this research was to determine the relationship between satisfaction, service and travel motivations of the visitors to the AENP. To achieve this, data captured from 2005-2007 by the Institute for Tourism and Leisure Studies on the AENP was firstly used to determine the visitors? profile and, secondly, to apply factor analyses and the t-test. The factor analyses were applied and, in both cases, four factors were identified. In the case of the service factors, hospitality services, general services, activities, and infrastructure disseminations were found and, in the case of travel motivation factors, learning experience, activities and events, escape and family socialising. The t-tests were used to determine whether or not visitors' expectations were met. This was also used to determine the relationship between travel motives, service and satisfaction of the visitors to the AENP. Findings indicated that the visitors whose primary travel motivation expectations were met rated the services higher than visitors whose primary travel motivation expectations were not met. The research therefore confirmed that there is a relationship between service and travel motivation. In terms of visitors' satisfaction, the relevance of the relationship between travel motives and service is lower if the visitors' primary travel needs are met, with a higher relevance of the relationship if the primary travel needs are not met. Park management can use these results as tools to ensure that the product offered guarantees visitors' satisfaction and therefore contributes to long-term park sustainability. Therefore park management can obtain the ideal tourist experience by not only focusing on the travel motives but also on the quality of service delivered at the park.

Abstract:
Branding and consciously aiming for a certain brand identity has been practised for over four centuries. Irrespective of whether it is a business to consumer or business to business environment, marketing and branding are aimed at increasing volume, and therefore revenue, but is also about adding some additional measure of value to the products or services on offer. Brand management practices have existed for decades, but brand equity as a central business concept for many organizations has only really emerged in the past twenty years. Even though there is huge interest in branding with a definite predominance of branding in consumer or business to consumer (B2C) markets, literature indicates that branding, brand equity and brand value in business to business (B2B) environments are handled and experienced differently to the extent that it has received little attention from academics. Therefore the question is firstly to determine the differentiating factors/elements in B2C and B2B environments and; secondly what corresponding factors/elements are there in B2C and B2B environments. The practical application of branding in business to business environment is consequently investigated to assess to what extent businesses are able to create brand value and brand equity. Larger businesses increasingly exhibits trends in recognising the importance of branding and brand names, while small and medium-sized business fare poorest when it comes to harnessing the potential of branding. Yet in the face of a changing business landscape, brought about by the current economic recession sparked by the U.S. subprime crisis of 2007, these businesses are beginning to realise the importance of having a strong brand name in order to achieve not only a sustainable competitive advantage, but also in a quest to remain ahead of the competition. Even though the valuation of brand equity and brand value is discussed, the actual calculation of such valuations does not fall within the scope of this study.
