Abstract:
The theme of alienation in the novels of Karel SchoemanThe state of alienation is one of the overriding themes in Karel Schoeman's oeuvre. This article, “The theme of alienation in the novels of Karel Schoeman”, deals with one of the manifestations of this theme, namely the dilemma of alienation. The world presented in Karel Schoeman's oeuvre is characterized by dichotomy, e.g. the known as opposed to the unknown - a phenomenon which causes uncertainty. This article examines the way in which an epistemological dichotomy is expressed as a kind of dilemma in the novels of Karel Schoeman. The dilemma is presented to discourage a simple escape by means of choice. In this position between alternative worlds or views, the Schoeman character faces limited options: to make a choice of sorts and win or risk sacrificing something of value; to accept this precarious position and confirm his life as one of passive silence; to conquer the impasse, e.g. by sidestepping the choice and creating an alternative world as in a dream or a work of art.

Full text
Abstract:
Tradition and renewal – Hierdie lewe by Karel Schoeman Since the sixties generalizations have frequently been made regarding the difference between old (older, traditional) and new (newer, "modem") Afrikaans prose. Karel Schoeman’s novel Hierdie lewe (1993), however, shows the relativity of the dichotomy old vs. new prose. The theme of this novel is fairly traditional: a reminiscence of a life of hardship and loneliness in the South African platteland. Nevertheless the formalization of this theme is not that of the "gemoedelike lokale realisme" (a genial local realism) which N.P. van Wyk Louw referred to. The on-going process of “making strange/making unfamiliar” (Victor Shklovsky) is achieved by a specific style of writing. The novel’s merit lies in the fact that Schoeman, within the linguistic options available to him, within the focus of the chosen narrative perspective, and within the time frame of the 19th century, exhibits considerable creative mastery of the language - despite the constraints presupposed by each of these contexts. It is an outstanding achievement that Schoeman could find so many parallels and synonyms and integrate them in a diffuse but systematic way in his comprehensive novel.

Abstract The article is a response to Heather Walton’s IAPT presidential address titled “A Theopoetics of Practice – Re-forming in Practical Theology.” Practices examined in this article are rituals and caring related to death and dying in literature. By making use of Ronald Grimes’ so-called fictive ritual the portrayal of rituals and caring in novels by the Afrikaans novelist Karel Schoeman are examined. As a response to Walton’s address, a theopoetics is developed from the ars moriendi in the work of Schoeman.

Abstract:
The World Spider Catalog (WSC 2016) currently lists Peucetia longipes Pocock, 1899 as a senior synonym of P. casseli Simon, 1899; according to Niekerk & Dippenaar-Schoeman (1994: 16). The synonymy decision per se is not to be doubted but, regarding the senior name choice, it was stated that “As both P. [Peucetia] longipes and P. casseli were described in 1899, we decided to give P. longipes priority over P. casseli as the former species was more often referred to in the literature.” So Niekerk & Dippenaar-Schoeman (1994) did not check the month or even the day of the two relevant publications.

Full text
Abstract:
‘At the limits’: Karel Schoeman’s Verkenning (1996)Written from the postcolonial vantage point of the new South Africa, Karel Schoeman's Verkenning (Reconnaissance) deals with the colonial era of the early nineteenth century. Through metafictional commentary the reader is alerted to the provisionality and tentativeness of historical fiction, as fiction and historical facts are constantly juxtaposed. At the same time the novel can be read as an attempt to fathom the ‘darkness’ of the bygone era, and to throw ‘light’ on the nature of intercultural relationships during the period of the Batavian Republic (1803-1806). Of central importance, however, is the way in which the consciousness of a new era is suggested through the subtle functioning of numerous intertexts. These intertexts deal with various forms of transitional consciousness, such as those associated with the French Revolution. A remarkable characteristic of the novel is its historiographic metafictionality, an innovative element in Schoeman’s oeuvre. Verkenning (Reconnaissance) is a polyphonic novel in which a collage of voices is foregrounded and presented in the process of ‘exploring’. From within the politically transformed multicultural South Africa of the late twentieth century, the creative imagination explores the roots of this society in the history of almost two centuries ago. In this respect Verkenning may be characterised as a postcolonial narrative construct and thus part of "oorgangsliteratuur" or “Wendeliteratur”, a term coined for the literature produced after the political change in 1989/1990 in Germany.

Full text
Abstract:
The first motivation for reading Karel Schoeman’s novel ’n Ander land within the framework of late nineteenth century Western European decadcnt literature is the strong resemblance between Schoeman's character Versluis and Des Esseintes, main character of the so-called Bible of Decadence, namely Joris- Karl Huysmans’ A Rebours (1884). Schoeman’s cultivated narrative style, his use of archaic Dutch and French words and the fact that this novel h as 'no story’, confirm the affinity of ’n Ander land with the decadent literary tradition as established by Huysmans’ plotless novel. The ultimate vision communicated in ’n Ander land is that death, like the landscape of Africa, is infinitely empty. The journey of the dying Versluis to Bloemfontein with its emphasis on intense heat and desolation and its affinities with Dante's Divina Commedia can be seen as a symbolic descent into hell, with the suggestion that Versluis will never reach paradise.

Abstract:
This article deals with some aspects of the historical Abraham. Reference is made to an Afrikaans author, Karel Schoeman, and his novel, uVerliesfontein". In this work Schoeman attempts to enter the history of a town and its people. This, however, is not possible and he therefore says that history is another country. A country which is totally inaccessable. It is, however, also true of Abraham. Since the nineteenth century it has been emphasized that we can never determine the historical Abraham. There are no reliable written sources about him (Wellhausen). Even if one tries to get behind the sources and determine the oral tradition (like Gunkel), Abraham still evades one. Through markers in the text and ancient near eastern parallels some scholars even sought to date and describe the era of Abraham. These attempts also failed. It is argued that we should rather refrain from dating Abraham. This, however, is not the end of the story. We can still try to determine how Abraham was interpreted in faith through the ages. In this regard Von Rad's usage of Usage" can be of great assistance. In a next article this topic is discussed futher.

Abstract:
Conflicting character evidence and a scarcity of male specimens has historically made placement of the spider subfamily Penestominae Simon problematic. The Penestominae was recently removed from the family Eresidae and promoted to family rank based on the results of a molecular phylogenetic study; a complementary taxonomic revision of the Penestomidae is presented here. Penestomidae contains a single genus, Penestomus Simon, 1902. The genus Wajane Lehtinen, 1967 was previously included in the Penestominae, and distinguished from Penestomus based on the lack of a cribellum. Wajane is, in fact, cribellate, and is here synonymized with Penestomus New synonymy. Nine Penestomus species are recognized: four species are redescribed (P. planus Simon, 1902, P. croeseri Dippenaar-Schoeman, 1989, P. stilleri (Dippenaar-Schoeman, 1989), new combination, and P. armatus (Lehtinen, 1967)) new combination, and five species are newly described (P. egazini sp. nov., P. kruger sp. nov., P. montanus sp. nov., P. prendinii sp. nov., and P. zulu sp. nov.). Male specimens are rare in collections; only P. egazini, P. montanus, and P. armatus are known from males, and only P. armatus is unknown from females. A dichotomous key to the species is provided. Data elements in this work have been disseminated across multiple electronic venues, including images on Morphbank, distribution data exposed through GBIF and explorable using Google Earth, new nomenclatural acts registered with ZooBank, and species pages on the Encyclopedia of Life. Where available, species descriptions include links to molecular sequence data on GenBank.

Abstract:
The coffee white stem borer, Xylotrechus quadripes (Chevrolat) is a major pest of coffee, Coffea arabica (L.) (Rubiaceae), in South Africa, India, Thailand, and China (Duffy 1968; Schoeman 1990; Visitpanich 1994; Montavon 1997). Females lay eggs singly or in batches, generally under bark crevices of the stem. Neonatal larvae feed beneath the bark and, during development, bore deeply inside the stem. Stems are colonized by up to 60 larvae. Extensive damage by larvae causes mortality of coffee plants or reduction of fruit production (Duffy 1968; GK veeresh). Because larvae inside the stems of coffee plants are difficult to control, management tactics are aimed at preventing infestation, either by interfering with oviposition of females or by killing neonates before they bore into the stem. Our study tested insect and host plant derived stimuli that may affect the selection of oviposition sites by female X. quadripes.

Full text
Abstract:
The Tetrablemmidae is a family of small to very small haplogyne, ecribellate, three-clawed spiders characterized mainly by the complex pattern of abdominal scuta (with dorsal, lateral and ventral plates) which justifies their common name “armoured spiders” (Shear 1978, Lehtinen 1981, Jocqué & Dippenaar-Schoeman 2006). They have a dorsal shield of prosoma heavily sclerotized, usually with rugous, pitted or reticulated surface, distinctly modified in the males of many genera. They lack direct eyes (anterior median), and several genera may lack some or all of the indirect eyes as well. One of the recognized tribes, Tetrablemmini (subfamily Tetrablemminae), contains the type genus of the family: Tetrablemma O. Pickard-Cambridge typically known by having four eyes displaced posteriorly in males, which have a convex clypeus, sometimes with tubercles, and chelicerae with anterior horns (Figs 6, 8─9; Lehtinen 1981: 56; Tong & Li 2008; Burger 2008).

Abstract:
Thie angel on the plains This article about Die uur van die engel (Karel Schoeman, 1995) examines relationship between the inhabitants of the barren Free State and its landscape. Most people are limited by a "horizontal" approach to life; they are unable to fulfil their desires. The novel reveals a reason why some people find peace in such an inhospitable landscape while others seem to find merely temporary success in terms of possessions or power, but vanish from the landscape with hardly a trace left behind. This article contends that the angel, as a "vertical" factor, makes the real difference. The presence of the angel invites a symbolic reading of relationships with the landscape, in that the novel presents the angel with all its assosiations of mercy (as a manifestation of a suggested secret). This view opens the possibility for an ending that contains a healing message: life is after all, possible on the barren plains of Africa because of a spiritual approach.

Abstract:
A new genus of the spider family Zoropsidae, Cauquenia, gen. nov., is proposed for Cauquenia maule, sp. nov., from the Maule region in central Chile. The familial placement is tested through the inclusion of Cauquenia in the latest major published morphological analyses of the superfamily Lycosoidea, and the subfamily placement of the South American zoropsid genus Itatiaya Mello-Leitão is also tested including them in the Raven and Stumkat (2005) analysis. Cauquenia and Itatiaya are closely related to the African genera Griswoldia Dippenaar-Schoeman & Jocqué and Phanotea Simon, with which it shares a cup-shaped median apophysis on the male pedipalp and tooth-like projections on the lateral lobes of the epigyne in females. The patterns of evolution of the cribellum and the male tibial crack in Lycosoidea are explored; the cribellum shows up as primitively present, with three losses and four independent acquisitions, and the male tibial crack is lost twice. An asymmetric cost in cribellum gain : loss of 6 : 1 produces a primitive cribellum with 12 losses.

Haji, Ishtiyaque. "Moral Responsibility and the Problem of Induced Pro-Attitudes." Dialogue 35, no. 4 (1996): 703–20. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0012217300008581.

Abstract:
The problem of induced pro-attitudes is simply this: why is action which ultimately issues from pro-attitudes such as desires, volitions, and goals, induced by techniques such as direct manipulation of the brain, hypnosis, or “value engineering,” frequently regarded as action for which its agent cannot be held morally responsible? The problem is of interest for several reasons. Ferdinand Schoeman, for instance, believes that the problem poses a resolvable but challenging predicament for compatibilists: if agents can be held morally responsible for actions that are causally determined, then why should actions that result from induced pro-attitudes be regarded as paradigmatically unfree actions for which agents cannot be held morally accountable? Robert Kane exploits the problem to launch a libertarian attack on compatibilists. He says that a covert non-constraining controller controls the will of another agent by arranging “circumstances beforehand so that the agent wants and desires, and hence chooses and tries, only what the controller intends.” Kane claims that compatibilist accounts of freedom cannot distinguish between cases in which an agent behaves freely and those in which an agent falls prey to the covert non-constraining control of some other party.

Abstract:
Into the heart of evil: Two recent Afrikaans noveis about the Anglo-Boer WarThe centenary commemoration of the start of the Anglo-Boer War in 1899 has already inspired the publication of two major Afrikaans novels: Op soek na generaal Mannetjies Mentz by Christoffel Coetzee, and Verliesfontein by Karel Schoeman. These novels should not be considered in isolation. In contemporary Afrikaans literature quite a lot of attention is paid to the Anglo-Boer War. It is, together with the Groot Trek, one of the most significant events in Afrikaner history and has become a very potent symbol of Afrikaner nationalism. The contemporary writer radically debunks the Boer War, thus signifying his absolute rejection of the ideology of the previous generations. This is also the case in Op soek na generaal Mannetjies Mentz and Verliesfontein. Both novels present an unconventional perspective on the war. Op soek na generaal Mannetjies Mentz does not portray a heroic general. On the contrary, Mannetjies Mentz and his commando personify evil. In Verliesfontein the Boer commando not only gave up the village but also all pretence of justice, thereby turning this war episode into their moral Waterloo. Both novels bring a shocking corrective to the traditional representation of the Anglo-Boer War. A s a result they destroy the myths on which Afrikaner nationalism has been built and the Afrikaner is forced to look into his own heart of evil.
