Abstract:
In 1623, the property of Ladislaus Seydlitz von Schönfeld was confiscated and immediately purchased by Polyxena of Lobkowicz. It also included the Encovany estate with Seydlitz’s library, the core of which was the book collection of the previous two lords at Encovany, the Vice--Chancellor of the Kingdom of Bohemia Oswald Schönfeld von Schönfeld (1524–1589) and his son Rudolf (1565–1602). Provenance research into the Library of the Monastery of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in Roudnice nad Labem and the Roudnice Lobkowicz Library has identified fragments of the earliest Encovany library. The article provides the basic information not only on fragments of this Renaissance castle library but also on the fates of its first owners.

Abstract:
Schönfeld and Reiser recently hypothesized that fatty acid β-oxidation is a source of oxidative stress in the brain. To test this hypothesis, we inhibited brain mitochondrial β-oxidation with methyl palmoxirate (MEP) and measured oxidative polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) metabolites in the rat brain. Upon MEP treatment, levels of several nonenzymatic auto-oxidative PUFA metabolites were reduced with few effects on enzymatically derived metabolites. Our finding confirms the hypothesis that reduced fatty acid β-oxidation decreases oxidative stress in the brain and β-oxidation inhibitors may be a novel therapeutic approach for brain disorders associated with oxidative stress.

Abstract:
The monastery of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin was founded in Roudnice by members of the Roudnice branch of the Lobkowicz family at the beginning of the 17th century, when also its library was established. With its approximately 1,800 volumes, it ranks among smaller, unexplored monastic libraries. Nevertheless, it contains a number of interesting and valuable fragments of earlier private book collections, coming from early modern aristocratic libraries as well as libraries of clergymen from nearby parishes. This article presents the most important of them. Particular attention is devoted to the fragment of the library of Ladislav Zejdlic of Schönfeld, originally placed at Encovany Castle in North Bohemia, and to book donations by members of the Roudnice branch of the Lobkowicz family, the main sponsors of the monastery.

Abstract:
AbstractLooking fourteen years into the past, Russia has made enormous progress in reforming its legal system in order to ensure human-rights protection under the Convention. This process of reform is still ongoing. The causes of the existing difficulties in the area of human-rights protection are better explained in terms of difficulties with implementation of standards in the Russian legal system rather than any antagonism between Russian and European human-rights attitudes. There are several groups of violations of the ECHR that need to be analyzed separately because of the different nature of the problems. Some of them reflect structural and practical problems of the Russian legal system immanent in a transition period of reforms and of the dismantling of old regulations and attitudes; others may be accounted for by the lack of proper (efficient, adequate and balanced) measures and solutions to address the numerous new challenges that Russian society is facing after the collapse of the Soviet Union. There are many examples that provide evidence that Russia is trying to amend its legal and political system to meet the requirements of the Convention.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractThe authors develop a two-layer hydraulic model to determine the saline intrusion length in sloped and converging salt wedge estuaries. They find that the nondimensional intrusion length = CiL/hS depends significantly on the channel bottom slope and the rate and magnitude of landward width convergence, in addition to the freshwater Froude number. In the definition of , Ci is a quadratic interfacial drag coefficient, L is the salt wedge intrusion length, and hS is the depth at the mouth of the estuary. Bottom slope is found to limit the saline intrusion length, and this limitation accounts for the deviation of the observed exponent n in a scaling relationship with the river discharge of the form L ~ Q−n from the canonical value of 2 to 2.5 predicted by the theory of Schijf and Schönfeld for a flat, prismatic estuary. The authors find that estuary convergence is important only when the ratio of the slope-limited intrusion length to the convergence length is greater than one, and that the effects of convergence are less significant than those of slope limitation. They compare this model to field and validated numerical data and find that the solution predicts the intrusion length with good accuracy, improving on the flat, prismatic solution by orders of magnitude. While this model has good predictive capability, it is sensitive to Ci and the location of the hydraulic control point, both difficult to determine a priori.

Abstract:
Abstract For evaluating whether an eye-tracker is suitable for measuring microsaccades, Poletti & Rucci (2016) propose that a measure called ‘resolution’ could be better than the more established root-mean-square of the sample-to-sample distances (RMS-S2S). Many open questions exist around the resolution measure, however. Resolution needs to be calculated using data from an artificial eye that can be turned in very small steps. Furthermore, resolution has an unclear and uninvestigated relationship to the RMS-S2S and STD (standard deviation) measures of precision (Holmqvist & Andersson, 2017, p. 159-190), and there is another metric by the same name (Clarke, Ditterich, Drüen, Schönfeld, and Steineke 2002), which instead quantifies the errors of amplitude measurements. In this paper, we present a mechanism, the Stepperbox, for rotating artificial eyes in arbitrary angles from 1′ (arcmin) and upward. We then use the Stepperbox to find the minimum reliably detectable rotations in 11 video-based eye-trackers (VOGs) and the Dual Purkinje Imaging (DPI) tracker. We find that resolution correlates significantly with RMS-S2S and, to a lesser extent, with STD. In addition, we find that although most eye-trackers can detect some small rotations of an artificial eye, the rotations of amplitudes up to 2∘ are frequently erroneously measured by video-based eye-trackers. We show evidence that the corneal reflection (CR) feature of these eye-trackers is a major cause of erroneous measurements of small rotations of artificial eyes. Our data strengthen the existing body of evidence that video-based eye-trackers produce errors that may require that we reconsider some results from research on reading, microsaccades, and vergence, where the amplitude of small eye movements have been measured with past or current video-based eye-trackers. In contrast, the DPI reports correct rotation amplitudes down to 1′.

Abstract:
The text of Kant’s first dissertation is a translation from Latin from an academic publication of a collection of Kant’s works: Kant, I. Meditationum quarundam de igne succincta delineatio... In: Königlich Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, ed., 1910. Kants Gesammelte Schriften. 1. Abhandling: Werke. Band I: Vorkritische Schriften I, 1747-1756. Berlin: Georg Reimer, 1910, pp. 369-384. The publication is available at https://korpora.zim.uni-duisburg- essen.de/kant/aa01/ [Accessed 10 March 2019]. Pagination and illustrations are from the same publication, the page numbers are in square brackets at the beginning of the page. Page footnotes, if indicated, draw on the commentaries of Lewis White Beck, the translator of the dissertation into English from the following edition: Kant, I., 2012. Natural Science, edited by E. Watkins, translated by L. W. Beck, J. B. Edwards, O. Reinhardt, M. Schönfeld and E. Watkins. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, pp. 713-714. It was important for the translator to follow the course of Kant’s thought and as far as possible preserve his style, including recurring words. Natural science terminology keeps as close as possible to the dissertation text, so instead of the term “gas”, which Kant does not use, the translator resorts to a loan-translation “elastic liquid,” harking back to the Russian term упругая жидкость (elastic liquid) which was proposed by Mikhail V. Lomonosov but did not catch on. For the same reason the translator uses the loan translation “moment” instead of the more common “motive force”. “Gradus”, however, is always translated as “degree” for the sake of uniformity. All the translator’s additions to the Kantian text are within square brackets. When the meaning of a word is translated in a form that departs from the original meaning due to context the Latin original is attached within round brackets in the grammatical form used by Kant. To facilitate understanding, long compound sentences of the Kantian text are sometimes broken up into several simple sentences. The structure of the text and title page format have been preserved. The translator would like to express sincere gratitude to Alexei N. Krouglov and Svyatopolk N. Yeschenko for their valuable advice, remarks and help and support in preparing this publication.

AbstractThis paper investigates a recent model proposed by Moskalenko, Collmar & Schönfelder (1998) for the plasma surrounding galactic black hole candidates. Using a linear Monte Carlo code, the spectral and temporal behaviour of the model is found for the case where the plasma geometry consists of a hot shell surrounding a cooler spherical core. The spectrum produced by this model at X-ray and gamma-ray energies is obtained numerically. Also found for the first time in this geometry are the photon time-lags between two energy bands due to rapid aperiodic variability. It is argued that the time-lag information may be able to determine whether this particular geometry is a realistic model for the material surrounding galactic black hole candidates.

Abstract:
As a fictional response to a series of artworks by the Johannesburg artist, Joachim Schönfeldt, Ivan Vladislavić’s The Exploded View had unconventional origins. Though Vladislavić maintains that the links between Schönfeldt’s images and his own text are understated, certain motifs are obviously common to both. Moreover, if authenticity is one of Schönfeldt’s central themes, this is no less true of The Exploded View — and particularly of the story “Curiouser”, which features another (fictional) Johannesburg artist, Simeon Majara. The latter’s multi-media pieces not only raise uncomfortable questions about artistic originality and integrity, but also self-reflexively interrogate artistic representations of atrocity and the public’s consumption of such images. Intriguingly, however, while the fictional Majara’s installation on the Rwandan genocide, the “Nyanza Shrouds”, bears little relation to Schönfeldt’s work, it does implicitly set up a “conversation” with the Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar’s Rwanda Project (indeed, the similarity between Jaar and Majara’s names suggests a deliberately teasing cross-reference). In this article, I discuss the ways in which “Curiouser” engages with “the anxiety of influence” and the art world’s implicatedness in commodity capitalism. I also explore what Majara terms “the economies of repetition” in his own praxis, and his musings on the uncanny nexus between surplus and iteration in both genocidal and artistic contexts.
