Abstract:
Independent and original thinking are the concepts which define critical thinking. A critical thinker doesn’t passively accept other people’s views and thoughts, on the contrary he constitutes his own thoughts by analyzing them. This independence liberates his mind, heart and actions (Doğanay and Ünal, 2006). In this context, the definition of critical thinking can be summarized as reaching a conclusion by reasoning (collecting information for a present situation, defining assumptions and evidences, discussing the defined evidences and inferring and synthesizing) on a problem or a situation (Demirel, 2006). Critical thinking becomes a basic skill in occupational groups. To improve the quality of the services people get, all professionals, especially doctors, teachers, architects, lawyers, nurses, builders, must have the ability to think critically. This study aims to classify the master’s and PhD theses whose titles contain the concept of “critical thinking” by different variables. The data were collected from the 211 master’s and PhD theses completed between 1999 – 2014 and registered to database of Council of Higher Education. This study was conducted through descriptive survey model and descriptive statistics were used in the analysis process. Thesis were examined and classified under the following topics; (1) academic level, (2) the universities in which they were prepared, (3) preparation year, (4) research method, (5) research model, (6) education level of the participants, (7) departments in which they were prepared (8) gender of the researchers, (9) degree of the supervisors (10) number of pages. At the end of the study it was found that most of the theses about critical thinking were master’s theses and they were prepared in well-established universities. There are hardly any theses prepared in private universities. The number of theses about critical thinking reached its top point between 2009-2012. While most of the master’s theses were conducted through quantitative method, most of the PhD theses were conducted through mixed and experimental designs. The participants of most of the theses about critical thinking were university and primary school students. Teachers and nurses participated in more theses than other occupational groups. Most of the theses about critical thinking were conducted in the field of education. nursing and heath care departments takes the second place. However, it is interesting that hardly any theses were conducted in the fields of law, politics, public administration, sociology and psychology. Another interesting point is that most of the theses were prepared by female researchers.

Abstract:
205 Background: The European Organization for Research and Treatment in Cancer (EORTC) developed the EORTC-IN-PATSAT32 survey for in-patient satisfaction (use permission granted). Methods: The EORTC-IN-PATSAT32 survey administered after consent, at discharge on an oncology floor at a large university affiliated community hospital. Comparisons were made to Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), which were collected during the same time period. Results: The average age of those completing the 282 surveys was 60.2 ± 12.3. Males made up 50.2% of the population, 96% were Caucasian, 66% were married, and 49% had a high school education or less, 4% were enrolled in a clinical trial and 75% had researched illness on the internet. Physicians and nurses were ranked highest for there technical skill 90 ±16 and 87±17, respectively and lowest for their availability, 85±2 and 81±24, respectively. The services and care organization was ranked highest for other hospital staff interpersonal skills, 80±20 and lowest for hospital access, 70±25. Even though 87% of the population ranked there overall stay as very good or excellent there were differences seen between groups. Males were more satisfied with the information they received about care (p = 0.04), and their overall hospital stay (p = 0.03) than females. Patients treated by a medical oncologist were more satisfied with the information the received (p = 0.03) compared to other specialties. Married patients found access to facilities was better (p = 0.03) than unmarried patients. Those ≥ 65 were more satisfied with the exams, interest, and comfort of the nursing staff (p =.03) than their younger counterparts. HCAHPS (always rank) was higher than EORTC (excellent rank) for information (p <.0001), personnel listening ( p < 0.0001), and hospital cleanliness (p = 0.008), however no difference was seen in overall rating of care (p = 0.45). Conclusions: The majority of patients were satisfied with their care. Patients gender, marital status, age and the specialty of the physician were significant factors in determining satisfaction. Survey administration differences may contribute to difference between EORTC and HCAHPS. Hospital staff need to be cognizant of possible unintended bias towards various groups of patients.

Fehr, Florriann. "Understanding the lived experience of student-parents in undergraduate nursing school." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3583320.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of the qualitative phenomenological study was to describe the phenomenon of being a student-parent by identifying the lived experiences of nursing students that are parents, specifically their perceptions of their experiences of how they balance their family life with their academic life successfully. Two participants were involved in the pilot test and 21 main study participants were included in the sample. The data obtained through semi-structured one-on-one interviews were analyzed using Giorgi’s method of phenomenological research. The findings of this study identified eight themes resulting from descriptions provided by the student-parents while in undergraduate nursing school and included: (1) All challenges are subjective to the personal circumstance reflecting the unique home situation, (2) Unmet personal expectations occur while in nursing school through role conflict and guilt, (3) Post-secondary education has particular demands through financial and academic obligations, (4) Support is essential to nursing school success, (5) Processes enabling student-parent success contain compromises and strategizing balance with flexibility, (6) Interactions and outcome from negative spillover imbalance family and academic obligations, (7) Organization culture of campus attributes to the student-parent perspective, and (8) Participant recommendations to stakeholders . The essence of the student-parent experience influenced a formation of a comprehensive model, titled PARENTS to inform campus leaders of strategies to enhance the student-parent experience and accommodate family influences brought to campus. Future qualitative research suggestions include exploring support systems of student-parents, children experiences of student-parents, and campus stakeholder perspectives of breastfeeding and parent planning and family-centred accommodation on campus.

Catalano, Joseph T. "A National Study of Retention Efforts at Institutions of Higher Education with Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Programs." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1987. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331858/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is concerned with the problem of determining the status of.specific student retention efforts at the departmental and institutional levels in institutions of higher education offering baccalaureate degrees in nursing. The purposes of the study include (1) the determination of the percentages of those institutions which have specific programs to increase student retention in place and functioning at the various administrative levels, (2) the determination of those aspects of the many possible retention efforts that are being utilized, (3) identification of those retention efforts which may be most effective, and (4) comparison of retention rates between those institutions with organized retention programs and those without these programs. The population of the study is composed of all 430 of the National League for Nursing (NLN) accredited, Registered Nurse Baccalaureate Degree programs in the United States. The specially designed survey instrument produced a 62 percent response return. Response frequencies and percentages were calculated to show the relative success rates of various retention efforts. In addition, the data were subjected to several statistical procedures to determine if there were statistically significant differences between the various types and levels of retention efforts. The findings indicate that the presence of an organized and functioning program to increase student retention does produce a statistically significant increase in the mean retention rate for those institutions with such programs as compared with those institutions without organized retention programs. This significant increase was constant across the three types or levels of retention programs surveyed (departmental level only, university level only, both university and departmental levels). The majority of the respondents (55.5 percent) do have retention programs in place and functioning at some level in their institutions. Of the six major areas of retention efforts listed on the questionnaire, the area dealing the "Administrative Activities" to increase student retention was present most often among that group of respondents with the highest retention rates.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to investigate, through interviews, the factors influencing the career choice, role perception, and job satisfaction of 15 college health service nurse managers working in New England state colleges. The secondary purpose was to categorize nurse managers according to their attitudes and to determine the relevancy of the American College Health Association job description. The conceptual framework of the study included socialization, role theory, and job satisfaction. The 15 nurse managers who agreed to participate in the study comprise 75% of the potential subjects of this study. Interviews were conducted through the use of an open-ended interview guide. Qualitative analysis identified general themes from interview data. Selected segments of each audio taped interview were chosen by the interviewer to provide examples of key concepts related to career choice, role perception, and job satisfaction. Discussion of these findings resulted in the following conclusions: (1) Nurses need to assume a leadership role in developing policies and determining the direction for the college health service nurse managers' role. (2) Channels of communication between nurse managers and administrators must be identified and maintained to clarify role expectations and perceptions and to eliminate discrepancies. (3) Advanced education at the master's level and certification as a nurse practitioner may provide the nurse manager with the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill her role. Based on these findings, recommendations were made for future research.

Andrus, Veda Lillian. "Extent and styles of dean and faculty participation in decision making within selected schools of nursing." 1991. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI9132808.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to identify, describe, and analyze the extent of faculty participation in administrative decision making within selected schools of nursing. The style of participation was analyzed. The secondary purpose of the research was to observe whether the dean and faculty shared similar perceptions regarding the extent and style of participation in administrative decision making. This qualitative research study utilized in-depth interviews with the dean and two faculty members from three randomly selected baccalaureate schools of nursing in New England. The dean and faculty members were interviewed regarding the extent and style of participation in administrative decision making. For the purpose of this study, administrative decisions fell into the following areas: (1) budget, (2) policy formulation, (3) facilities utilization, (4) faculty tenure, and (5) faculty workload. The formulation of these decision making areas were, in part, taken from a study conducted by O'Kane in 1984. Although categories for the styles of participation emerged as the investigation proceeded, Lawler's (1985) classifications of styles of decision making were utilized as guidelines. Conclusions from this study included the following: (1) In each of the five areas of administrative decision making, the extent of input from the deans and faculty members depended upon the type of decision to be made. (2) Perceptions expressed by each participant regarding the extent of participation in decision making were shown to be parallel. The dean and the faculty viewed both the process and the individuals engaged in the process similarly. (3) The style of decision making utilized depended upon the area of decision making addressed. (4) The following themes were commonalities within and across schools as identified by the researcher: organizational climate, structure, and the dean's style of leadership. These themes direct the style of decision making employed within the schools of nursing.
