Abstract:
A number of studies argue that children’s learning can benefit from the use of media in classrooms and that there exists a lack of these technologies applied at schools. Many research indicate that use of augmented reality technologies in children’s teaching helps children to get more motivated and engaged in the learning activities, and it is beneficial for children’s memory retention. Some studies claim that motivation is an essential factor for promotion a learning performance. This study aims at creating an augmented reality (AR) book for 4-5 years old children and on understanding how AR can affect engagement, and how it can support learning in terms of memorization. There was conducted an experiment with eight children who go to preschool. During the experiment, the observations and interviews were made. Graphic design, illustration and animation were a part of preparation for the experiment. The study results are analyzed and discussed in relation to earlier research in this area. The results point towards the fact that AR could help children of preschool age in classroom education by positively affecting their memory retention and increasing their engagement and motivation – which was earlier claimed to be an extremely important factor for improving the learning performance. At the same time, it is hard to interpret the results with a high degree of certainty as the test groups were small and a number of additional factors could have affected the results. In order to confirm the results of this study, it is suggested to conduct a study of a larger scale.

Jackson, John Charles. "Elementary School Attendance in Bradford 1863-1903: A Study Using School Log Books." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/14253.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the issue of elementary school attendance in later nineteenth century Bradford. It seeks to do this by means of a little used source: the school log book. The focus of the study is on the experiences of head teachers who faced a constant struggle to achieve and maintain an acceptable level of attendance in Bradford where child employment in the flourishing textile industry had long been an inherent feature of working class life. It investigates broader issues affecting attendance in the context of prevailing social, cultural, religious, and economic factors. While the significant and influential pressures on attendance in Bradford were to be found elsewhere (for example, parental apathy; hostility to compulsory attendance; child labour; health and welfare), this investigation discovers that the town’s problems were compounded and made difficult by its phenomenal growth and rapid emergence by the middle of the nineteenth century as the undisputed capital of the world’s worsted manufacturing trade. It concludes that in the study of Victorian elementary school attendance Bradford deserves greater recognition in consideration of the tension between the demands of the most prolific half-time system of employment in the country, and prevailing attitudes to the introduction of universal elementary education in England and Wales.

Abstract:
In a Title I school located in a southeastern state, 60% of 3rd grade students are reading below grade level. The state's new reading initiative ties grade promotion to 3rd grade students reading on grade level. At the study site, administrators identified audio books as a possibly helpful reading tool. Vygotsky's zone of proximal development theory, which holds that learners can learn new skills more readily with guided assistance, framed this study. The purpose of this quantitative, comparative design study was to explore the associations between the use of audio books and the reading levels of 3rd grade struggling readers. Research questions were used to compare the reading levels of struggling readers who use audio books with the reading levels of: (a) struggling readers reading silently, (b) at or above grade level readers who read with audio books, and (c) at or above grade level readers who read silently. Two 3rd grade classes were selected, with 25 students using audio books and 25 students reading silently, to participate in this project. Scores from the AR and from the pre- and posttest STAR assessments over a 9-week period were analyzed and compared using an independent samples t test to explore associations between the use of audio books and the comprehension and reading levels of the participants. Analysis of the results showed that the use of audiobooks was not significantly related to increased reading or comprehension levels for struggling readers. Significant improvements in reading comprehension were shown for students reading at or above grade level that read silently or used audio books. Based on the findings, a professional development project for teachers providing research-supported reading strategy instruction was developed. The findings may lead to improvements in instructional practices by encouraging the use of research-based reading strategies, which could promote positive social change by supporting greater academic success for elementary students through improved reading comprehension.

I find that digitization causes a significant increase in content on Wikipedia pages, but copyright hurts both the extent of reuse and thereby the level of internet traffic to affected Wikipedia pages. Abstract:
The aim of this study is to increase the knowledge regarding the selection process of picture books by pre-school educators. My intention is to find out which criteria educators use to select the books. I have restricted the study to pre-school educators, because I wish to find out how they work with the selection process and which criteria and considerations are included. I also want to know if the children have influence in the book selection and how the books get to the pre-school. The study is based on qualitative interviews with educators at a pre-schools in my area as well as relevant publications. The questions the educators were given were semi-structured. The theoretical starting point for the study has been Vygotskijs sociocultural theory. The results showed that the educators made diferent considerations regarding the book selections, it was importent for the educators that the children had influence either through selecting the books them self or that the educators selectet books that the children where intrested in and the educators borrowed a lot of books from the library

Full text
Abstract:
Guided by the importance of children's voices and perspectives, this study aims at finding the immigrant children's perspectives of books that share stories of early school experiences of immigrant children. Before working with children, there was a careful selection process and analyzing of the three picture books chosen for the study using critical content analysis and childism lenses. The participants are three Arab immigrant children at the age of 6 who are bilingual and attended school in the U.S for one year, at least. With acknowledgement to reader-response theory, the data collection process started with an introductory home visit, followed by three individual interactive read-aloud sessions using interviews, audio records, and observations. The data collection involved field notes of non-verbal responses of the participants and these notes supported analysis of the eight transcripts. Thematic analysis is used in analyzing the data of each story, followed by identifying finding themes across all three stories. The seven themes found across all three stories are discussed in the final chapter and include: Children can have empathy for characters, understand social injustices in the stories, be agents to change injustice in the stories, and are curious about different cultures. The children's personal stories shared during this research are the most valuable outcome because they reflect the real experiences of those most affected by the research topic. The study also explains how listening to immigrant children's personal stories is an act that supports justice and helps to fight against any kind of prejudice those children might face. The study emphasizes that children have the ability to engage in sophisticated conversations about themselves and their life experiences through the use of appropriate tools combined with believing in the children's rights.

Abstract:
Recent legislation in Sweden mandates that all students beprovided access to a school library. In addition, schools areexpected to help students become independent and life-longlearners. Various national organizations stress theimportance of a school library in this process; however, reportedly independent schools use public libraries and theInternet for information activities instead. This studyexplores: 1) how independent schools in Sweden can meetboth government requirements to provide library accessand the information literacy demands of their students, and2) the function of digital libraries in this context. After acomparison of previous research, a qualitative method waschosen based on socio-cultural theoretical assumptions.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with aprincipal, a teacher, and a focus group of students from twoindependent schools. Through a process of open coding, important themes emerged concerning how libraries andinformation literacy are conceptualized. There is a strongtendency to see libraries in terms of a physical function(books on shelves) over social activities (e.g., integrationwith teachers, development of information literacies, collection management). Students rely first and foremoston Google during the information seeking process, but alsoconsult each other for help. There are also signs thatstudents are discouraged from asking their teachers for helpduring the information seeking process. The findingsindicate that current educator attitudes may hinder thedevelopment of digital school libraries.<br>Program: Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap, Digitala bibliotek och informationstjänster

Roberts, Tarryn Elizabeth. "School Psychologists’ Perceptions of Selecting Divorce-Themed Books for Elementary-Aged Children Experiencing Parental Divorce." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8555.

Full text
Abstract:
Divorce is a common event in the United States; an estimated 50% of marriages end in divorce. With so many divorces each year, a substantial number of children are impacted. Divorce can have negative effects socially, behaviorally, emotionally, and academically, in both the short term and the long term. Bibliotherapy is a therapeutic tool centered on the use of books and stories to assist in the understanding and expression of an event. Bibliotherapy has been shown to be effective for children who have experienced similar traumatic events such as loss. Research suggests that bibliotherapy could be a flexible, cost efficient, time efficient, and therapeutically effective intervention for children experiencing divorce. This research project attempted to further understand and identify the perspectives of school psychologists on the selection and use of bibliotherapy for children experiencing divorce in their families. Participants (n=11) discussed their perceptions of 16 preselected children’s divorce books. They also discussed their perceptions on important selection criteria to consider when selecting a book to use with children of divorce. Overarching themes indicated that participants proposed that an effective book individualizes treatment; portrays realistic experiences; includes topics that are practical, comprehensive and multi-dimensional; provides an engaging and interactive story; and addresses and identifies emotions. Future research is recommended to explore the effectiveness of using carefully selected stories in supporting elementary-aged children experiencing parental divorce.

Marbach, Amikam. "Developing locating information in books in the fifth grade of the elementary school." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1989. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1832/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research is to investigate the development of locating information in books in the fifth grade of the elementary school. The dilemma, according to the review of the literature, is that many students are not competent to locate information even in the most common source, the book, and that those who are responsible for developing these skills in schools are themselves suffering from some kind of weakness. Indeed, there is not even a program which is accepted by the whole scientific community in this area. The review of the literature also provides us with some idea about bridging the gaps of those who are responsible for the development of these skills in schools, and brings us closer to the very heart of the contents of these skills. Based on this state-of-the-art, the researcher designed a learning package program relating to the location of information in books for fifth graders of the elementary school, and he also designed a test for measuring the efficiency of this program. The learning package program was implemented and tested in Israel in two elementary schools with teacher-librarians and with well equipped libraries through collaboration between the researcher and the educational context. One of the schools was of a low socio-economic status, and the other was of a high socio-economic status. On the one hand the results strengthen the findings of the literature regarding the skill gaps of students and the lack of sufficient stimulation in schools, and on the other hand the results also reveal the possibility of improving, in many cases significantly, the location of information in books, by exposing students to the learning package program. This study reveals, moreover, that it is possible to bring teachers closer to the area of locating information in books in particular, and even to close the gaps between information skills and the educational context in general. Implications for teachers and librarians are included as well as recommendations for future research.

Shove, Claire. "More than just a room full of books: Swedish school libraries during distance education." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för ABM, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-447174.

Full text
Abstract:
Thus far the research on how schools have managed the sudden transition to distance education due to the COVID-19 pandemic has mainly focused on the experiences of teachers, and the voices of school librarians have gone unexplored. This study aims to explore the transition to distance education from the perspectives of secondary school librarians in Sweden. The study focuses on how this transition affected school librarians’ working practices and the factors that impacted their abilities to rebuild their usual activities and services in new formats. This study uses an infrastructural perspective to analyse the school library as a part of the wider school infrastructure, and considers the enforced transition to distance education as a kind of infrastructural ‘breakdown’. School libraries are treated as multifaceted infrastructures with material, structural and relational/cultural factors which all may contribute to their success. Through a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 14 librarians at 12 secondary schools in Sweden, I identified four themes in the ways informants talked about the transition process:  1.     Most well-established practices, relationships and collaborations could be adapted.  2.     The library room had social functions that could not be fully rebuilt online. 3.     Systematic integration, strong relationships and a culture of library use contributed to successful transitions. 4.     Work to make libraries more accessible and visible became more important.

What type of clothes is portrayed on the books characters? I performed a quantitative study of 136 children’s books. I used Maria Nikolajevas perceptions of stereotypical male and female properties to analyze my empirical data. My conclusions are that male characters dominates as main characters, most of the male characters in the children’s books presents stereotypical male properties while the female characters statistics presents almost equal results regarding gender-neutral properties, gender-stereotypical properties and stereotypical male properties and that both gender-stereotypical and gender-neutral clothes appears in the books.

Abstract:
碩士<br>育達科技大學<br>資訊管理所<br>107<br>The libraries in Taiwan can be classified into five major types: National Libraries, Public Libraries, Academic Libraries for colleges and universities, School Libraries for elementary and high schools, and Special Libraries. They provide substantial and useful resources for teachers and students. In the past, school librarians used to choose and purchase the books from their prior experiences. However, with the development of technology and the Internet, readers can have ready access to information anytime and anywhere. Therefore, it has become increasingly important for school libraries to know how to select the right books to meet the readers’ needs. This thesis aims to shed light on how to select and purchase books for school libraries. On the basis of the relevant literature and the modified Delphi method (MDM), four main factors are proposed in this study, including "purposes of establishment", "needs of readers", "quality of books" and "balance of collection." A hierarchical structure is established and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is utilized to assess the impact of the four aspects on the selecting and purchasing books, in the hope of determining the weights of index for the hierarchy model. Among the four primary criteria, the empirical results show that " needs of readers " are the most significant indicators, followed by “purposes of establishment”, "quality of books", and the lowest weight is "balance of collection." In terms of sixteen sub criteria, "students’ learning", "diversified services" and "adaptive learning environment" are the most significant factors. This also reflects the learning needs of students and teachers is the primary consideration. Judging from the four main criteria and sixteen sub criteria, the rank of the three alternatives: “The Formula of Youthfulness,” “A Fish that Smiled at me,” and “The History Keepers” corresponds to the results of the survey. “The Formula of Youthfulness” is the most popular book. It is hoped that this study can offer an effective method of choosing and purchasing books for school libraries and function as a reference for future research. Abstract:
D.Ed.<br>The general preference for English as language of teaching and learning (LoLT) poses a formidable learning barrier to many English Second Language (ESL) learners in South African schools. Addressing this barrier is the responsibility of the whole-school with the support of the Department of Education. In particular, school based support teams (SBST) are tasked with the support of learners who experience reading barriers in an inclusive mainstream school. This thesis concerns the implementation of a whole-school intervention at a primary school in a disadvantaged community in Gauteng, South Africa, where ESL learners experience severe barriers to reading acquisition. The aim was to provide support to the whole-school to address reading barriers in an inclusive environment. Objectives were to identify the elements of whole-school reading; to develop and implement an integrated whole-school reading intervention; to train educators to address learners’ reading barriers; and to provide guidelines to the Inclusion and Special Schools Unit (provincial level), District Based Support Team (DBST) and the school, to address reading barriers in future. A literature study reviewed themes regarding inclusion, support structures and whole-school development. Literature dealing with essential elements of whole-school reading, approaches and strategies provided a theoretical framework for the implementation of whole-school reading. A qualitative study within an interpretive paradigm using practitioner action research was conducted. The research site was a primary school in a disadvantaged area in Gauteng, which had referred ESL learners to the local Inclusion and Special Schools Unit for support. Action research was selected because of its fundamental principle of participant empowerment through participation, collaboration, acquisition of knowledge and social change. Data was gathered from staff and learners and analysed during the phases of the action research process. Data collection included learner and educator questionnaires, discussions, observations, field notes, pre- and post baseline scholastic assessment, focus group interviews and the researcher’s reflections. Findings indicated that SBST’s need support in order to address reading barriers. ESL learners do not receive sufficient exposure to English to develop reading skills. Intermediate phase educators have not been trained to teach learners to read and improve their reading skills. Whole-school reading intervention was thus valuable in providing training and support structures for the school to address reading difficulties.

碩士<br>國立東華大學<br>教育研究所<br>96<br>Abstract The main purpose of this research is to explore the content and implications conveyed in communication books of junior high school students. Through the analysis of content in the communication books, information about students’ physical and mental developments, school work performances, and daily activities and interpersonal relationships can be obtaind, and so can the information about the interaction of teachers with students, parents with teachers, and parents with children through communication books. This research also tried to find out if the change of the inner form of the communication books could influence the communication among students, teachers, and parents. According to the results of the research, some suggestions have been made as reference to teachers who use the communication books. This research adopted textual analysis and focuses on the students in an athletic class at the junior high school where the researcher teaches as research subjects. Each year’s communication books during the three-year course of junior high school are used for textual analysis. To enhance the accuracy and objectivity of the research, weekly test results, surveys, observation records, interviews, letters from parents or students and review notes are all taken into account. Through the analysis of the content in communication books, the researcher understood more about the interaction among students, parents, and teachers, and obtained some precious findings for this research. In the meantime, the researcher learned a lot from doing the research as well. The results of this research are as follows: 1. The content of communication books record students’ daily life and their learning experience. (1) The contents are versatile and anticipative. (2) Besides, frequent usage of Martian language and simplified characters. Erroneous characters appear repetitively. (3) Gender difference contributes to different writing styles and attitudes in review notes. 2. The messages conveyed through communication books exert a positive influence on the relations of teachers and students, parents and teachers, as well as parents and children. (1) Students make good use of communication books to discuss any issues related to their interpersonal relations. (2) The bonds between teachers and students are enhanced and students regard teachers as friends. (3) Parents are able to see the efforts teachers put into students through the messages sent actively by teacher. (4) Circumstances where students are unable to turn in their communication books at school are significantly reduced, though the parent-signings still need reinforcements. (5) The proportions of parent-children interactions are fewer in comparison, but notes from parents who do write to students are usually encouragements with school related issues. 3. The additional entries the researcher put into the communication books are greatly approved by students and parents. (1) Entries include “Great Phrase of the Day” and “Idiom of the Day” received a positive response. (2) Teachers write important information on weekly test papers, which received more written responses back from parents. Key words: Communication book, parent-teacher communication, teacher-student interaction, parent-child interaction, Athletic classes, textual analysis.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國防大學<br>運籌管理學系<br>107<br>National security maintenance cannot be borne solely by the military. Modern national defense must be based on the concept of "national defense" and achieve the overall strength through the participation of all citizens in different fields. Western proverbs: "Education is the cheapest defense". In addition to strengthening the consensus and civil defense forces of the national defense, education through different means is also an effective way to enlighten people's concern and participation in national defense affairs. In order to stimulate students' interest in national defense education, the study asked participants (students) to search for relevant materials in the online bookstore, and then use the GOOGLE questionnaire to fill out and collect military books and materials that high school students like. Then, the project-based collaborative filtering recommendation algorithm is used to calculate the similarity, and the book with the highest similarity is fed back to the students as the recommendation result. Finally, use the chi-square test to verify. Based on the recommendation results generated by the recommendation mechanism, this study comprehensively lists the list of recommended books for military books, provides the most suitable extracurricular military books for high school students, enhances the interest of high school students in military and national defense themes, and enhances the practice of national defense.
