Abstract:
ABSTRACT This paper presents various empirical strategies used to analyze the effect from school facilities on student outcomes, and discusses strengths and weaknesses by the methods. A key challenge in studies of student outcomes is that outcomes are affected by many factors and that many of these factors are correlated with each other. Moreover, some factors are difficult to measure, and cannot be observed in data. Hence, it is difficult to avoid problems related to omitted variables bias and the estimated correlations can thus often not be interpreted as causal effects. It is important to be aware of how difficult it is to move on from a correlation to a causal effect. If researchers wrongfully draw causal inferences one risks misleading policy makers into allocating resources to the wrong factors.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between student satisfaction with school facilities and exam results. Design/methodology/approach – The authors combined exam results in Norwegian lower secondary schools with results from a nationwide, mandatory and annual survey that measures student satisfaction over a five-year period. The data were analyzed using regression methods (ordinary least squares and fixed-effects estimation). Findings – The authors found a modest, yet significant, relationship between satisfaction with school facilities and exam results. This is in contrast to earlier studies using Norwegian data, which indicate no such relationship. The authors argue that the difference is probably due to the fact that they have richer data than what were available to the earlier studies of Norwegian schools, and that they used a direct measure of student satisfaction rather than formal and technical measures of facility conditions. Originality/value – This paper offers new evidence of the relationship between school facilities and student achievement and should be of great interest to academics, school leaders and policy makers.

Abstract:
Abstract In the present investigation, teachers’ self-reported knowledge and competency ratings for the evidence-based classroom management practices were analysed. Teachers also reflected on how they learned evidence-based classroom management practices. Results suggest that teachers working in schools that implement Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS) had significantly higher mean knowledge ratings in the area of posting, teaching, reviewing, monitoring and reinforcing expectations than those who do not teach in a PBIS school. Teachers certified in special education had significantly higher knowledge and competency ratings in relation to maximising structure, using a continuum of strategies to acknowledge appropriate behaviour and employing a variety of techniques to respond to inappropriate behaviour than those not certified in special education. Teachers’ knowledge of each of these practices came mostly from in-service sources. Implications of these findings for teachers’ preparation in classroom management are discussed.

Abstract:
Background: Girls especially during menstruation are likely to be affected in different ways by inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in schools, and this may contribute to unequal learning opportunities. For example, lack of adequate, separate private and secure toilets and washing facilities may discourage parents from sending girls to school. The objective of the study was to find the relation between wash facility and school absenteeism among the girls from a rural community of Jharkhand. Methods: Community based cross sectional study at the rural area among the school girls of classes 8 to 10. Pre tested semi structured questionnaire was used. Data entry at MS Excel and data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 20.0.Results: The mean age at menarche was 12.13 years. At school, separate wash area for girls was present in most of the cases 228 (61.1%). About 39 (9.9%) participants did not attend school during the menstrual days. Of this 29 (74%) believed that lack of separate wash at schools was a reason. Conclusions: Presence of separate wash area for girls at school was significantly (p-value<0.001) associated with good attendance during menstruations (96%).

Abstract:
The article addresses one of the actual aspects of potential of educational impact on preschoolers. The subject of the research is relevant and is based on new approaches to assessing the quality of educational services provided by teaching staff in pre-school establishments. The research was conducted on the basis of pre-school establishment “Yabluchko” of Kyiv-Svyatoshinsky district and is characterized by theoretical substantiation, practical embodiment, efficiency and democracy. The purpose of the article is to monitor the dynamics of personal achievements among preschool children, in particular, senior preschool children, to assess the conformity of the results of educational activities in the institution of preschool education, with standards and regulatory requirements. Conditions for the effective solving of educational tasks in the institution of preschool education are analyzed and the essence of the qualimetric approach to the assessment of the development of the child is disclosed. Monitoring the development of children of the senior preschool age and assessing the quality of educational services provided at the “Yabluchko” Pre-school establishment, was conducted whilst taking into account the Basic component of preschool education. The basic principles of the new Basic Component of the Preschool are: recognition of the value of preschool childhood; preservation of children's subculture; creating favorable conditions for the formation of the child's personal maturity; the priority of full-time living by the present child in comparison with preparation for school life; respect for the child, taking into account the individual personal experience of the preschool child; competent approach to personality development; giving priority to the social and moral development of the individual; formation of the ability of children to reconcile personal interests with the collective; formation of the basics of world outlook among children. The best innovative approaches in assessing the quality of educational services provided by teaching staff are found in the lowest link in pre-school education. Through monitoring, the dynamics of the development of the personality of the preschool child is monitored and the factors of existing educational gaps are identified. A further action plan has been developed to eliminate it.

Abstract:
A school library that exists in all levels of schools is a facility that supports the process of productive learningfor thefuffillment of information needs especially literature and the information deriving from the teachers. This article is written in response to the problem encountered in school libraries particularly at the elementary school at Subdistrict of Minggir District of Sleman with poor facilities, limited collection and aquisition and management. These conditions will indirectly affect the utilization of the school library by the teachers at elementary schools. This writing is meant to help teachers at elementary schools to understand the meaning of the library within the school. Approach to the analysis is based on the theory of social construction introduced by Peter L. Berger mtd T. Luclcrnan. We can use the concept of meaning and rests on thefact that there are objective reality, symbolic reality, and subjective reality. It is emphasized that the objective reality would affect the return to a subjective reality through a process of internalization. Subjective reality is inseparable from the process of socialization. Subjective reality affects the externalization process at the end. This condition can be associated with the birth of understanding what has been and will be done by the teacher in an elementary school library in the symbolic reality. Finally, this study reveals that there are two typologies ofteachers; professional staffmembers and deserter.

This paper discusses about the critical situations faced by the Defence operations with drones in the area of Siachen Glacier in the Himalayas. The reasons for the structural failures in drone’s rotor blades and the low-performance efficiency of the drones at low-temperature conditions are highlighted. A possible solution to the above-mentioned problems has been addressed by introducing a new boundary design in the rotor blades and composite materials. The results which are shown in this paper are obtained by the computational analysis facility located at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, School of Technology, GITAM (Deemed to be University), Hyderabad. By mimicking the Siachen Glacier atmosphere conditions, the proposed rotor blade design has been analysed in CFD.

Abstract:
This study was designed to address questions related to (a) school facility conditions in two elementary schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia and (b) the relationship of school facility conditions to teacher attitudes. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant relationship between school facility conditions and teacher attitudes. Two instruments were utilized to answer the proposed research questions, the Commonwealth Assessment of Physical Environment (CAPE), and the My Classroom Assessment Protocol (MCAP) instrument. The schools used in this study were selected to provide a contrast between an older and a newer building.

Data from the CAPE was used to determine the condition of both buildings, while data from the MCAP was used to compare teacher responses with both schools. Data from the CAPE indicated that more desirable conditions were present in the newer building than in the older building. The MCAP revealed that teachers in the newer building had better attitudes about: (1) the condition of their classrooms, (2) how the condition of their classrooms made them feel, and (3) the affect of classroom conditions on student learning. Together these findings suggest that teacher attitudes are directly influenced by conditions within the building.

Richardson, Callie Marvin. "School Facility Conditions and Student Achievement, Attendance, and Behavior in an Urban Elementary School in Southeastern Virginia." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77161.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between facility conditions and student achievement, attendance, and behavior in an urban elementary school in southeastern Virginia. Most United States schools were constructed prior to 1960 (Phillips, 1997). As public school buildings aged and deteriorated, researchers became interested in determining links between facilities and student achievement (Lewis, 1983; Cash, 1993; Phillips, 1997; NCES, 1999). Research suggests links between specific facility conditions and student achievement, attendance, and behavior. This study examined student achievement, attendance, and the behavior of students in an eighty year-old facility and compared the same students as they transitioned into a new facility. The literature review examined existing literature and discussed major concepts relating to specific building conditions, and findings of empirical studies from across the United States and abroad. Few of these studies looked at schools that transitioned from an old building to a new building. This study employed a mixed-methods approach allowing the researcher to examine effects of facility conditions on attendance, behavior, and achievement in reading and mathematics as evidenced by standardized test scores using Virginia Standards of Learning Tests. The researcher used focus groups with students, parents, and teachers to qualitatively document the relationship between facility condition and behavior of urban students who transitioned from an eighty year-old facility to a new facility in southeastern Virginia. The findings of this study were varied. Paired t-tests were run to determine whether there were differences in achievement, attendance, and behavior when students transitioned from an old facility to a newly-constructed facility. When student cohorts were combined, students performed significantly better in reading and mathematics. However, when students were separated by cohort, results varied. Paired t-tests were conducted to examine gender differences for each cohort. Gender did play a role in the improvement of female students. Three themes emerged from focus groups: (1) the significance of technology in enhancing student achievement and instructional quality, (2) the feeling of pride as a catalyst for positive behavior; and (3) the impact of space, cleanliness, and lighting on behavior and achievement.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the percentages of students passing the Standards of Learning (SOL) examinations and current building condition of the high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The first research question examined the relationship between the percentages of students passing the SOL examinations in school buildings that are assessed as substandard and standard. The second research question examined the difference between the percentages of students passing the SOL examinations in school buildings that are assessed structurally as substandard or standard. The third research question examined the difference in the percentages of students passing the SOL examinations in school buildings that are assessed as cosmetically substandard and standard. This study consisted of three major data components. The first component was the percentages of students passing the SOL examinations in the high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The second component was the responses of principals to the Commonwealth Assessment of Physical Environment (CAPE) assessment. This instrument required an assessment of the condition of the school building. The final data was the percentage of students participating in the free and reduced lunch program which served as a measure of control for the socioeconomic status of each student body. The CAPE responses were used to compile descriptive statistics, pair-wise comparisons, and correlations. Schools were given a rating and placed into either standard or substandard condition based on the principals' responses on the CAPE. Once the two categories were identified, the percentages of students passing specific subtests of the SOL examinations were compared in standard and substandard condition to determine the relationship. The findings in this study indicate there is a significant relationship between building conditions and the percentages of students passing the English writing and reading SOL examinations. This study supports previous research studies that found that building condition does have a relationship with student achievement. As the need for high quality educational experiences increases, school boards should examine the available research relating to the condition of the educational facility and its impact on student achievement.

Abstract:
The north and north-western quadrants of Pretoria have been identified as requiring attention for rejuvenation. The framework looks at “connectivity through activity” and the site ties into the creative industries, heritage route and pedestrian walkway proposed for the area. It is realised that in this day and age the ideal is often impossible to achieve. Paradoxically too it is often in the more densely populated areas, where land values are highest that there is the greatest need for ample space for children, whose probable home is a cramped flat, with no garden in which to run about and play freely. With the proposal to increase housing in the framework for Pretoria's city and, in a bid to densify the urban centre, comes the added responsibility to accommodate the youngest generations of city dwellers. It is with this in mind that the design proposal looks at the creation of a pre-primary school and public playground connected to a pedestrianised inter-block walkway. A new revolutionary approach to educational buildings has to be investigated in terms of “learning through play” by “extending the field of play” and incorporating design techniques of both architecture and landscape architecture to create a holistic design precedent that will stimulate young minds.

Abstract:
AbstractMunicipal solid waste (MSW) generated in developing countries usually contains a high percentage of organic material. When not properly managed, organic waste is known for creating many environmental issues. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil and water contamination, and air pollution are a few examples. On the other hand, proper and sustainable management of organic waste can not only bring economic gains but also reduce the waste volume that is sent for final disposal. Composting is one such recovery method, in which the end product – compost – eventually helps the agricultural industry, and other sectors, making the process an excellent example of nexus thinking in integrated management of environmental resources. The aim of this chapter is to discuss how Cajicá, a small city in Colombia, approached this issue in a methodical way to eventually became one of the leading organic waste composting examples in the whole world, as recognised by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2017. Cajicá launched a source separation and composting initiative called Green Containers Program (GCP) in 2008, based on a successful pilot project conducted in 2005. The organic waste separated at source collected from households, commercial entities, schools, and universities are brought to a privately operated composting plant chosen by the city to produce compost. The compost plant sells compost to the agricultural sector. The participants in the GCP could also receive a bag of compost every 2 months as a token of appreciation. The Cajicá case presents us with many lessons of good practice, not only in the sustainable management of waste but also in stakeholder engagement. It specifically shows how stakeholders should be brought together for long-lasting collaboration and the benefits to society. Finding the correct business model for the project, efforts made in educating the future generation, and technology adaptation to local conditions are also seen as positive experiences that others can learn from in the case of Cajicá’s GCP. Some of the concerns and potential threats observed include the high dependency GCP has on two institutions: the programme financially depends completely on the municipality, and the composting operation depends completely on one private facility. GCP will benefit from having contingency plans to reduce the risk of having these high dependencies.

Abstract:
The integration of graduate research in the training of engineering students has demonstrated a significant increase in learning efficiency, by giving them a practical experience with real industrial issues. The department of Energy and Propulsion of National Institute of Applied Sciences in Normandy, a French Engineering School, continues to implement the latest fully instrumented facilities in their field to initiate the students to inquiry-based education courses. In this type of education, they are carrying out a series of tests, learning how to handle equipment, control and monitor tests, extract results and ultimately analyze and present them in technical reports. This paper addresses how the Helicopter Annular Combustion Chamber test facility has been integrated in the Propulsion systems engineering course sequence. The Annular Combustion Chamber kindly provided by SAFRAN Helicopter Engines was progressively incorporated and instrumented in a dedicated test facility by the students themselves along the last 8 years. Now, this laboratory practical work offers the students the possibility to interactively learn about the operation of a combustion chamber inside a helicopter engine at various air/fuel flow rates. Students learn how to determine the limits of ignition/non-extinction as a function of the entry air-flow rate. In addition, this facility is equipped with high-level instrumentation that allows to measure the different flow rates, pressure, temperature inside and outside the annular chamber, and the pollutant emissions at the exit. Results provided by students help to build a comprehensive knowledge base of combustion phenomena inside a turbojet engine. It is to be mentioned that this educational facility is unique in its category, from the point of view of results accuracy, instrumentation level and realistic operating conditions.
