Full textand investigated college adjustment process and experiences of students through three interviews at three stages (3 months, 6 months, 9 months). Participants were 14 English Preparatory School Turkish students at a university in the Northern Cyprus. Study II, investigated the role of gender, academic achievement, student club membership, perceived stress, self-esteem, college adjustment self-efficacy, and cultural distance, on college adjustment. Participants were 186 English Preparatory School Turkish students at a university in the Northern Cyprus. In Study II, data were collected at the end of the academic year. In Study I, it was found that, students&rsquo
self-controlled persistence of activity dimension of CASES scores increased significantly from 3 to 6 months, and students&rsquo
cultural distance scores increased from 3 to 9 months. However, no significant differences were encountered in other variables&rsquo
scores among three assessments. The qualitative findings indicated that students experienced several challenges and frequently used active coping strategies to deal with them. During this challenging process family and friends were the two prime sources of support for the students. Students also revealed that their first year experience contributed to several positive personal changes and their supportive social network and previous experiences/life style were two important facilitative factors in their adaptation process. In Study II, the results of the three hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated that combination of all 5 predictors in three steps explained 34 % of variance in total college adjustment, 31 % of variance in social adjustment, and 34 % of variance in academic adjustment scores of the students. Among all individual predictor variables
self adjustment in human relations dimension of CASES, self-esteem, student club membership were positive predictors of overall college adjustment and social adjustment
academic achievement and self-controlled persistence of activity dimension of CASES were positive predictors of academic adjustment. On the other hand, perceived stress was a negative predictor of overall college adjustment and academic adjustment.

Abstract: An activity has been designed to understand how a future teachers' group interprets scientific popularization about physics published in the magazines Ciência Hoje and Pesquisa Fapesp and to understand aspects of the possibility of uses of those texts with high school students. We based our analysis on discourse analysis' notions, originated by Michel Pêcheux. We considered the conditions production and the historicity in the reading and the repetition categories: empirical, formal and historical, explained by Eni Orlandi. We also focused on journalism and scientific journalism characteristics, showing some characteristics of the texts, e.g. linguistic resources, textual aspects and newsworthiness, to understand how those students interpreted the selected texts. Thus, the texts were proposed to the students in a class for the first semester of the course. We could notice that some journalistic characteristics created conditions for the students' interpretation and the three repetition categories, which showed us the many ways that the students read. Regarding the possibility of the use of magazines in high schools, we noticed controversies in their positioning. For some the popularization texts could be used for the approach of other aspects of physics, which are different from the contents usually shown in high schools. For other students the texts could not be used, because they approached topics which are not part of the university entrance exam or aren't included in the contents usually studied at that teaching level.

Full textThis study is included in the field of Education History and Historiography. It is an analysis about the courses of studies elaborated between 1887 and 1929 in São Paulo, identifying the school knowledge (subjects and contents) selected to be teached in the following types of public primary schools existed in the period: isolated schools, model schools, graded schools, isolated model schools and reunited schools. For each model of school, there was a specific course of studies to be complied, meaning, thus, that the children that they attended couldnt have access to the same school knowledge. Through the investigation of the course of studies - that were incorporated in school legislation or attached in it - it aimed to pay attention to aspects as stability, addiction, and/or exclusion of certain school knowledge, besides the way that they were presented, it means, if only they described the subjects to be teached or if they detailed the contents of each one. This way, it was possible to conclude that the main goals of the primary schools were the nationalization and the moralization of the students. However, in case of isolated schools, those werent the initial focus. Other intent of this research was look for references about the issue of course of studies made by different educational professionals during the period. For this objective, it were analyzed teachers, principals of model schools and graded schools (they are found as manuscripts) and inspectors reports. In this case, they also can be found as manuscripts, but later they were included in the Anuários do Ensino do Estado de São Paulo (1907-1926). Besides, it were investigated texts published in three educational magazines which authors, generally, kept high positions in the hierarchy of São Paulos public educational system (teachers and old students of Normal School, principals of schools, and others): Revista de Ensino (1902-1918), Revista Escolar (1925-1927) and Educação (1927-1929). Through the utilization of the educational reports and the educational magazines it was able to note the active participation of the different educational professionals involving discussion about what to teach in primary schools. As theoretical standpoint, the main authors that have been used were André Chervel and Dominique Julia, who suggest the history of school subjects as a way to discover the school culture, and Ivor Goodson, one of the exponents of the history of curriculum.

The result of the study showed that students in conceptual change texts oriented instruction accompanied with analogies got higher average scores in Rate of Reaction Concepts Test than traditionally designed chemistry instruction. Also, students in experimental group indicated a higher positive attitude toward chemistry as a school subject. In addition, science process skill was a strong predictor for the achievement related to rate of reaction concepts. Full textThis paper presents research data on the subject of school management present in a mass communication vehicle. This is Veja magazine. The research collected and analyzed data referring to the subject school / educational management present in the contents of Veja magazine over 18 years of publications (1997-2014). The criterion used to choose Veja magazine as the object of analysis was because it is a mass vehicle that has national coverage and is the most read in the segment of weekly magazines. The main objective of this work was to characterize, understand and analyze the content on school management present in the journal. The procedures for achieving the objectives were to select the content that addressed the theme of education and then separate those that specifically deal with school management. In addition, this paper draws inferences about the conception of school management found in Veja magazine over the course of these 18 years (1997-2014). For data collection we used the theoretical-methodological guidelines of content analysis from Laurence Bardin\'s perspective. For the analysis, all editions of Veja magazine from 1997 to 2014 were verified. As the object of this work is the publications about the topic school / educational management, the first move was to find out which publications were about education. Subsequently, the analysis was deepened, characterizing which of these publications on education addressed the issue of school / educational management. Regarding the inferences about the management conception present in the magazine, it is important to highlight Veja\'s defense of the private sector and concepts present in typically capitalist administration as a generic model that can be transplanted into public education as an ideal of quality in education. This model of the private sector confronts the nature and specificity of the pedagogical character developed in the work process inside the school. For the theoretical contribution of the analysis on the specific nature of the pedagogic process, the author Vitor Paro was especially used.

Abstract: This research, qualitative in nature, focuses on a discussion involving Education, Communication and Culture, theoretically based on Social and Cultural Studies. It aimed at understanding the cultural perspective of High School teachers through their use of media resources in the school setting. To achieve this goal, we investigated the magazine Carta na Escola [School Letter] - a supplement of the weekly news magazine Carta Capital dealing with High School issues. The study verified how journalistic contents about current events were used by teachers as supplementary educational materials in different disciplines, considering the proposals of the PCN [Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais - Brazilian National Curricular Parameters] for each discipline. It also examined how Carta na Escola has been received and understood by students. The corpus of the research consisted of five editions of the magazine, from August to December 2011, to better understand its pedagogical proposal. Then, anchored in the studies of Theories of Reception, the research used the method Focus Group, for an in-depth analysis. The group was made up of seven teachers and eight second-year High School students, which allowed us to understand, in a dialogical perspective, how the cultural debate operates in the classroom and contributes to the development of the students' worldview. All classes which used the articles of Carta na Escola were recorded on video and questionnaires were filled out by teachers and students to check the results of the use of this media in the classroom. Finally, by crossing the collected data (documents, interviews and direct observation), the final analysis of results was carried out from a Foucaultian perspective (1979), since such approach focuses less on textual details and more on a historically discursive perspective of the social actors behind texts and contexts. The research pointed to a media that seeks to adapt its teaching proposals to the skills and abilities described in the PCNEM [Brazilian National Curricular Parameters for High School]. However, it does not "listen to" the teacher-reader systematically, but rather sporadically and generically. Regarding the selection of topics, the criteria for their choice and variety are oscillating, with priority given to issues related to Human Sciences and their technologies to the detriment of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and their technologies. Teachers and students understood that the curriculum of the school associated with the use of this particular media facilitates the willingness to learn, since news in general brings teachers and students a sense of social belonging, logic and usefulness that goes beyond the formal school teaching

The OBJECTIVE of this research is to analyze the discursive production of the School Management Magazine (RGE) on school management. The question that instigates the work is to identify which management model is valued by RGE. We work with the HYPOTHESIS that the periodical guides the school to adopt a managerial school model management with the slogan "democratic and shared management" and, at the same time, utilizes the guidelines recommended by international organizations, among which, the World Bank, UNESCO and OECD, with the purpose of increasing productivity and efficiency, measured through large-scale assessments, and of attaining better aligning between the schools and the needs of the market economy. The ISSUE that stimulated this research is the assumption that the good quality of education (whether in the conduct of the national education or in the conduct of what happens inside the school) is fundamentally based only on the management model adopted. In this sense, it seems that the efficiency of the school units - usually determined by performance indexes - becomes a typical management problem, ignoring the different tints that mark the multifaceted discourses about school management, as well as the existence of other intervening factors for the desired good quality of education. In order to understand the discourse of the journal, we also address issues that support the journal's arguments, such as the proposals of the International Organizations on school management and the conceptions about public-private partnerships (PPP) in Brazilian education. The trajectories of the Victor Civita (FVC) and Lemann (FL) Foundations are approached in order to understand better the organization, structure and circulation of the periodical under analysis, identifying the discursive strategies that seek to legitimize a discourse about school management. In order to carry out the research, 53 (fifty-three) editions of the journal were analyzed, being 29 printed editions and 24 online editions, from August/2009 to December/2016. We have also interviewed the directors of editing and of products of the New School Association (ANE). To substantiate our reviews, we use the following theories: the concepts of "authorized language" and "describe and prescribe" in Bourdieu (2008); the concept of slogan and metaphor in Scheffler (1974); the notions of policy cycle, managerialism and performativity in Ball (1989, 2001) and the idea of "legitimacy network" in Ricardo Filho (2005). In addition to those, we have also utilized contributions from Shiroma et al (2005); Victo Paro (1988); Felix (1984) and Ravitch (2011).

This thesis aims at reconstituting the debate about Ensino Médio (High School level education) that took place between 1962 and 1972 and which was published in the Brazilian Magazine of Pedagogical Studies (Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos - RBEP). It did so by identifying both the goals assigned to that level of education and the place it was given in public policies. The Brazilian Journal of Pedagogical Studies (RBEP) showed to be a prolific source because its issues present debates about the educational policies regarding Ensino Médio, questions about the functioning and administration of schools, teacher training, curricula, methodology, and the coordination between Ensino Médio (High school), Ensino Primário (Elementary and Middle school) and Higher Education. The journal also featured: debates around the relationships between education and planning, education and work, education and economic development, education and social mobility. After 13 years of debates, Brazil passes its first Lei de Diretrizes e Bases (Guidelines and Foundations Act) for education under a democratic regime (the act came into effect in 1962). For Ensino Médio, the new law proposed more flexibility of curricula and coordination between the many levels and branches of education, as well as more autonomy for the states to organize their educational systems. The intellectuals who wrote in RBEP, especially those related to INEP showed a concern to organize and plan an education system that had the most objective to allow everyone to have access to education. To problematize education were somewhat interpreters mass. Regarding the high school at the same time defended the end of the two-tier model, debated how to reconcile the three main medium degree purposes: training, vocational and preparatory. With the military coup in 1964 and the implementation of the dictatorial regime, the educational policies for basic education underwent changes due to the enactment of the 1967 Constitution and of Federal Law 5.692/71, which implemented “1º e 2º graus” (Elementary, Middle and High School). This restructuring brought about changes in the functioning of schools and in the didactic and pedagogical organization of Brazil’s Basic Education. Dictated by the arbitrariness and the lack of continuity of public policies, High School level education did not succeed at attaining its essential goals of educating, professionalizing and preparing individuals for higher education.

Full textThe research sought to understand the observations and propositions of Dalcídio Jurandir, brazilian intellectual, in particular those related to the educational, field which resulted from his work at the magazine Escola, at school inspectorate, in health education and his participation in the 1st Brazilian Congress of Writers. By means of a bibliographic and documentary study and guided by a theoretical-methodological landmark associated with the ideas of Carlo Ginzburg, Mikhail Bakhtin, Pierre Bourdieu, Antonio Gramsci and Serge Gruzinski, the research turned, in a first moment, to the origins of his family and the likely conditions that led him to a career guided to the literary and educational fields. As a result, several of his productions were approached, emphasis being given to those found in the magazine Escola, between 1934 and 1935, as well as to his office as a school inspector in the year 1939, in the state of Pará. Depicting the 1940s, we delineated the moment when he acquired relative acclaim on the national literary field, which accredited him, in large part, to attend the 1st Brazilian Congress of Writers and to work at the Special Service of Public Health in the field of health education. As possible results and contributions of this study is the portrayal of the early formation of Dalcídio Jurandir as an indigent artist, an intellectual apart from the great cultural centers, as a result of the declining political and economic conditions in which Pará and Brazil were involved, that gradually went through a reconversion of capital that managed to relieve part of the difficulties of the situation. In this transition, his entry into public service represented the necessary change of his condition among the intelligentsia that legitimized his migration to the condition of functionarywriter. Collaborating in different Brazilian newspapers and magazines in the 40s, Dalcídio Jurandir had a new offset of his position and reached the status of national intellectual, a journalist-activist relatively consecrated, awarded an expressive literary distinction and that, in face of the new and favorable time, articulated and participated in the 1st Brazilian Congress of Writers, and developed health education activities along the Special Service of Public health.

Full textIn this PHD thesis, I examined some cultural production which allowed me to follow activities linked to Science/Chemistry school knowledge production. For that, I examined Brazilian teaching official documents, the National Curricular Parameters, some Chemistry didactic books and a scientific publication magazine (Superinteressante Magazine). The research was developed under inspiration of Cultural Studies, using theoretical support by Stuart Hall, which I tried to connect to Michel Foucault’s and Thomas Popkewitz’s thoughts to carry out discursive analysis. The analysis show the interconnections between the enunciates that are part of different speeches published in these production and indicate that themes such as health, environment, technological development and consume started to constitute the agenda, in the referred magazine, in the didactic books and in the National Curricular Parameters. This subjects legitimate and submit these themes to school teaching in the Science/Chemistry area in Basic Education. The insertion of new themes/contents indicates that there is a rupture regarding what was formally considered pertinent school contents to the teaching of Science/Chemistry. Regarding health, for example, the texts started to worry about living longer, healthier, having a better look, carrying about being agile and young, which implies living in a “democratic” dictatorship of making responsible choices regarding body care, in other words, in these cultural aspects the speech related to health care is associated to will changes of attitude in the people’s ways of living. About the environment theme, the texts highlight the importance of adding daily practices to the school contents, which is considered a prerequisite for the citizenship development to promote the relationship between the people and the environment.

This work examines the construction of the pedagogic discourse in the Nova Escola (New School) magazine, the discoursive procedures utilized in this construction, and the framework of values in which these discourses insert themselves. Thus this work takes as the principle corpus of analysis the periods 1997-1998 and 2011-2012. Emphasizing the analysis of the magazine s editorials, covers and advertisements, this work investigates the effects of meaning that these texts produce based on its discoursive construction. For the description and analysis of the verbal-visual texts, it refers to the French semiotic and its model of analysis of the signification proposed by A. J. Greimas, together with the visual semiotic, with the contributions of J. M. Floch. Its objectives are to design a landscape about the emergence of the magazines and their similarity to the newspaper; to localize the emergence of the Brazilian pedagogic publications; to investigate the emergence and consolidation of the Editora Abril as an expressive communication company; to examine the creation of the Victor Civita Foundation and, lastly, to investigate the teacher simulacrum reiterated and strengthened by the discourse of Nova Escola (New School). The analysis points to the reinforcement of a simulacrum that sees education, specially the first two years, as vocation and mission, stressing the instrumental dimension at the expense of the conceptual. The gender questions are also important; above all by the fact of the woman-teacher simulacrum be continuously reiterated in the discourse of the refered media. In terms of discoursive procedures, the play between objectivity and subjectivity, reinforces the scientific discourse as well as the relation of approximation that the magazine establishes with its readers. Thus, this work verifies the absence of any lexeme that treats the associative and sindical questions related to the teaching profession. The reiteration of the red, in what refers to the visual aspects, and the passionate feature of the texts highlights the verbal-visual discourse of Nova Escola, intrinsically connected to the reinforcement of the love-dedication-education relation

Full textThe thesis is about examining how certain current textbooks in technology at the lower secondary school and technology 1 in the upper secondary school address sustainable development (SD). The textbooks have been compared with current curricula for both Lgr11and Gy2011 as well as some external sources, the UN's 17 Global Goals and the magazine Nyteknik. As a method, a thematic analysis has been chosen according to Brown and Clark (2008), fromthe contextual perspective. The different themes have been analyzed and counted with regard to occurrences in the various sources, which has resulted in both a quantitative and qualitative analysis. The analyses have been linked to literature on research in three main areas; technical subject and HU, teacher - student and knowledge and textbook perspective. It can be stated that the textbooks do not contain as much percentage (%) of SD text mass, paragraphs, which the course and subject plans contain. The textbooks do not adhere specifically to the direction of the curricula, but SD seems to have been added to the existing content of previous editions, rather than having been worked in from scratch in new editions. This means that SD is sometimes regarded as an optional complementary activity in the teaching. The curricula do not follow the 17 new global goals for SD. This is because they are at different levels and synchronization with the global goals is done with a great delay. First, synchronization is made to the national level, then to the institutional level and last to the course and subject level (curricula). As it is now, the technical subject in the curricula seems to emphasize the importance of thinking about SD, rather than highlighting technologies relating to sustainable development and sustainable products. The conclusion is that textbooks and curricula need to be updated and the technology topics would integrate SD in a more concrete and genuine way, not as today, at a generally educational level. This is to emphasize the importance of SD in society and to achieve a current and equivalent teaching and acquiring knowledge and skill.

With the more intensified global competition, it is every parent’s wish for providing their children with a pluralistic learning environment. While reading has been regarded as the foundation of all learning, children magazines are an important type of reading materials facilitating diverse learning in children. The objective of this study is to investigate consumer motivation, learning requirement and other factors affecting the subscription of children magazine by parents of elementary schoollower grade students. The investigators also explored technological acceptance of parents on children reading children magazine using tablet computers. The study used questionnaire survey to collect data from parents of elementary school lower grade students in Yulin County. A total of 454 questionnaires were sent out, and 358 of them were returned and valid (valid response rate = 78.9%). The data were analyzed statistically, and the following conclusions were drawn based on the statistical results. 1. For the current children magazine consumer experience, those comprehensive type of children magazines are prioritized by respondents for subscription, while the top three factors considered are children’s interests, appealing contents, and educational orientation. The most commonly subscribed children magazine is Benesse Magazine for lower grade students, while the second popular one is Daily News. It is usually the mother making the decision on magazine subscription, while the decision on extending the subscription or not is mainly based on children’s willingness. 2. For consumer motivation, the highest rated aspect for subscribing children magazines by parents is the aspect of “pluralistic competence”. For the contents of children magazines, “lively and fun” is the most important consideration, followed by “giving instructions on daily routines” and “easy to understand”. 3. For the effect of socioeconomic background of parents of elementary school lower grade students on children magazine consumer motivation, types of relationship with children, family income, and gender of low- grades students can lead to significantly different children magazine consumer motivation. 4. For the effect of socioeconomic background of parents of elementary school lower grade students on needs for children magazine contents, types of relationship with children, age parents’ education and occupation, family income, and gender of children can lead to significantly different needs for children magazine contents. 5. For children magazine subscription, there is a significant correlation between consumer motivation and needs for magazine contents in parents of low- grades students. More specifically, a greater parental consumer motivation is associated with greater demands on children magazine contents. 6. For parents’ technological acceptance on letting children reading magazines using tablet computers, usefulness and usability can both positively affect user attitude. Usability also has a positive effect on usefulness. 7. For publishers, it is recommended to provide a more comprehensive type of children magazines with pluralistic contents. To elicit reading, the topics should be lively and interesting. As we are entering into the digital age, publishers planning e-magazines for children need to make sure that the operational interface is easy to learn in order to increase parents’ willingness for subscribing e-magazines for children.

The main aim of the study was to explore the possibility of learner autonomy in learning English from the Live Interactive English Magazine (LIEM) in senior high school. Following Kurt Lewin’s action research approach, the researcher practiced the action research procedures. The whole study mainly included three steps. During the steps, different actions were planned, taken, observed and reflected to help 118 senior high school first—year students to learn English from the Live Interactive English Magazine autonomously. Besides, the data were collected through interviewing, researcher journal, observation, document, questionnaires and classroom discussions, and then were coded, filed, compared to build interpretations and write a report. The major findings during the research process were as follows. 1. In Step 1, the students had learned to get the main points of the WRTs by depending on the vocabulary tests and they had also done better on the Live vocabulary items in the second monthly test than in the first monthly test. But the vocabulary tests, which had helped most of the students recover their confidence in learning English from the LIEM, did not lead more students to listen to the listening lessons but inspired them to notice the necessity of reciting vocabulary. Besides, most of the students still needed the guidance of the vocabulary test and wanted to depend on the vocabulary tests to perform better in WRTs. Moreover, the students still couldn’t be motivated to improve their listening comprehension through the Audio-CD, the CD-ROM or the listening lessons. 2. In Step 2, according to the result of the reflection sheet, lack of time- management skills and active learning habits had influenced the students’ learning results most; lack of interest in English, tips for learning English and sense of achievement also led to the difference between the ideal and the fact; the content of the LIEM was still too much for the students to handle. Also, in addition to reciting the vocabulary, doing the WREs and taking the WRTs, the students’ self-expectation, learning attitudes, learning strategies and sense of achievement had also played a part in their learning results. 3. In Step 3, judging from the reasons for the students'' choices of certain learning strategies, the learning strategies, which the students had chosen, had to be time-saving, efficient, fit for the learners, easy to do and persevere with, familiar to the learners, helpful to better remembrance of what was learned, and convenient for reviewing. Additionally, the students'' accomplishment of the chosen learning strategies depended on suitable time-management, better understanding how to do them, and less difficulty in the strategy itself. Furthermore, according to the students'' reflection on learning attitudes and feelings about group performance on reading aloud and conversation, most of the students were still far from autonomous in learning but had gradually benefited from the group performance. 4. According to the result of the after-action questionnaire, about one third of the students agreed the whole process had improved their English at all aspects, helped them prepare for the future, urged them to use the software to learn a language, motivated them to try deciding how much to learn from the LIEM and when to study it, and encouraged them to decide how to learn from the LIEM. And about one fifth of the students felt the whole process had made them more familiar with the content and the test type of the GEPT and brave enough to accept the importance of English and also had made them contact more English without much cost. Additionally, most of the students were still accustomed to the learning mode guided by the teacher, but about half of the students had got the notions of autonomous learning. At the end of this paper, based on the results of the study, pedagogical implications were presented, and suggestions for future studies were offered as well.

Abstract This study is focusing on the differences of teachers’ reading motivation reading behaviors, reading needs and constructions of reading from multiple backgrounds. In this study, a questionnaire survey method is used, public school teachers in New Taipei City as targets, 67 public elementary schools were selected, and questionnaires were sent to. 855 teachers and retrieved 712 copies. 657 copies are valid, copies for an effective questionnaire return ration is 80.35%. The questionnaires were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, independent sample, single-factor analysis of variance, and the chi-squared test of independence. The conclusions are as followed: First, elementary teachers have higher motivation of receiving information from educational magazines, especially information technology education. Teachers believe that, through reading education related articles, people would learn experience and wisdom from others. Through communication in the field, people will increase their professional substance and approval. They share professional information with others willingly. Second, the motivations of reading educational magazines are significantly different compared with female and male elementary teachers. The motivations of subject teachers reading educational magazines are significantly different from homeroom teachers and school directors. Third, as reading behaviors, elementary teachers reading educational magazines more frequently than general people. Especially elementary teachers with master degree or above, they read education magazine 2-3 hours per month on average. Elementary teachers who are in the position of directors have the longest reading time. They read educational magazines 5 hours or more per month on average. Forth, educational magazines that relate to classroom management are highly demanded by homeroom teachers. Teachers who are under age 30 wishes to gain more information about classroom management and teaching methods, include approaches. School directors or teachers in the schools that have 12 classes or less wish to receive more information about student counseling. Fifth, The elementary teachers believe that reading educational magazines help them to learn more about teaching methods than classroom management. Classroom management related articles are not providing enough helpful information to homeroom teachers and teachers who are teaching in the schools that have 12 classes or more.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate the institutional regulations, processes and modes of planning, formation, organization and making education policy for the school sanitation and hygiene in Greece during the period 1911-1949. The study focuses on the collection, evaluation and thematic classification of the primary sources with the method of historical research (comparative-historical analysis: Kazamias, 2002) in order to comprehend with imagination (Carr, 1983) and to interpret the historical presumptions (an interpretive-historical approach: Pyrgiotakis, I. & Papadakis, N. 1998). Through the detailed research of our historical documents, we are attempting not only to recompose the historical reality but also to analyse and to interpret the facts during the period 1911-1949, a period characterized by the most important welfare state policies in the area of the school sanitation and hygiene. Thus, our approach is not a fact-based approach (Dimaras, 1988), it does not confine itself to what happened but it also attempts to provide answers to “why”. It interprets (interpreting history: Dertilis, 1995), based on welfare state and new education theoretical approaches. Using the qualitative content analysis (Berelson, 1952), we examined the differentiations of the institutional progress in the periods-sections and for the following parameters-analysis categories: school sanitation, students’ hygiene, teachers’ hygiene, medical and health service/control in school, medicare and perception measures in schools on behalf of the state (with special references to school lunch mess and to the creation of wider social perception institutions like: childhood countries-student camps, outdoor schools, student baths, student health centers-student clinics and the centers of student perception), hygiene education, popularization and the school hygiene magazines, from the two “venizelians” periods, the metaxian and the post war period to 1949. Historical, political, financial, scientific and geographical factors were affecting the children’s health, connected to the cultural and social conditions and the living conditions of every social group or individual during all epochs of our country. In conclusion, the health services for school age children were having a big priority in sanitation and social policy programs, characterised although quite often by discrepancy between laws and their implementation. This is due not only to the internal political contradictions but also to the political fluidity of that era and to the economic recession related to the greek state financial sizes.

In recent years, the trend of Taiwan family life has transferred from parents center to children centre, which makes each children publication on market have considerable market potential, and develops gradually. Along with the increase of Taiwan's economy level, the influence of baby bust and change of education policy, parents attach an increasing importance to the education of their children. The early children's publications laid particular stress on foreign translated works, as there was only a few domestic works available. Also, for publisher, the translation of foreign work was an easy and time-saving method. Nowadays, the intellectual and scientific children's books work as the mainstream, parents pay great attention to the selection of children's extracurricular reading material and hope to learn knowledge from them. Due to the various publications of children's books, elements from cultivation of content to the overall package design are received full attention. How to stand out from the ocean of children's books? Cover design is the first central focus. And how to show the charm of magazine cover through visual design is the key point of the research on this paper. This paper conducted experiment testing by random design collection, and to explore the elements and best visual performance of elementary school children's magazine cover. Sampled by 30 elementary school students, and then to find out the affected design factors of children's magazine covers through questionnaire research. Factors include optimum layout, the most resonating image presentation style, and eye-catching colors, then take these for future reference on children's magazine cover design. Research results are as follows: 1. For computer font and artistic font, the reading effectiveness of illustration is higher than scene pictures by using computer font; while the scene pictures reading effectiveness is higher than illustration by using artistic font. 2. For image configurations of scene pictures and illustration, warm color reading effectiveness reaches the top in scene pictures; and in illustration, neutral color comes the top. 3. Compared with cool color covers, warm color and neuter color covers provide a warm and soft emotional atmosphere which makes readers more preferable to choose. 4. In reading preference, the most popular independent variable of cover version design goes to the combination design of font layout (artistic font), image design (scene pictures) and color design (warm color).

This study aimed to find out the effects of English learning magazines on listening and reading abilities of vocational high school EFL students, with particular focus on the learning effects of the students in different year levels. In addition to the year level, other important variables likely to influence the improvement of the students' receptive abilities via English learning magazines were also investigated. These variables included the time spent on the magazines, the students' language learning strategies, and the assistance from the school English teachers. At last, the correlation between the students' listening and reading abilities was probed. A total of 312 students from Department of Electronics, Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Industrial High School (KSVS) participated in the study. Among them, the number of the first-year students is 103, of the second year is 107, and of the third-year is 102. No matter which year the students were in, all of them were required to study the same copy of English learning magazines, to listen to the English learning programs through the broadcasting system at KSVS every Tuesday and Friday mornings, and then to take three listening and reading achievement tests held during six months. The first two listening and reading tests were conducted in the first semester; the last one was administered in the second semester. After finishing the third test, they were asked to fill in one questionnaire. The major findings of this study are summarized as follows: 1.The use of English learning magazines had a positive effect on both the listening and reading abilities of the vocational high school students. The students who used the magazines for more than one year outperformed those who used the magazines for less than one year in both listening and reading. 2.The amount of time spent in listening to the English learning programs did not cast a significant influence on the subjects' listening performance. On the other hand, the amount of time spent in reading the English learning magazines produced a telling effect on the subjects' reading and listening performance. Those who read more than 0.5 hour per week scored significantly higher on both listening and reading tests than those who read 0 hour. 3.Most of the students expected their teachers to explain the content of the magazines after listening to the English learning programs, while most of the teachers assisted their students by giving the vocabulary tests. As a result, the teachers' assistance did not exert a discriminatory effect on the subjects' listening and reading scores. Moreover, the students who expressed no need for their teachers' help scored significantly higher than those who expressed the need. 4.The previewing strategies had a telling effect on the subjects' listening performance, but not on their reading performance. The reviewing strategies did not have a significant influence on both the subjects' listening and reading performances. As far as the compensation strategies are concerned, most of the subjects checked the Chinese translation to overcome both the listening and reading difficulties. 5.According to the subjects' self-evaluation on the effects of using English learning magazines, the use of the English learning magazines helped most of the subjects gain lexical knowledge, improve reading abilities, and understand Western culture. 6.There was a high correlation between the students' listening scores and reading scores in every year level. To sum up, the results of the study revealed that reading English learning magazines and listening to English learning programs cast beneficial effects on enhancing the vocational high school students' receptive skills. As a result, the teachers should encourage their students to learn English through this channel.

The study compared the English learning magazines in five aspects: word level, readability, speech rate, activity, and package. It was anticipated that the results of the study could serve as the reference for learners and teachers to select appropriate learning materials and for magazine editors to adjust the editing focuses. Widely adopted in the public vocational high schools in central Taiwan, four English learning magazines, including two elementary-level magazines—Let’s Talk in English and A+ English, and two intermediate-level ones—English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine, were selected for data analyses. The main findings are as follows: 1. Word level—Analyzed by Web VP, Let’s Talk in English and A+ English have similar word distributions, while English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine have similar word distributions in four word frequency categories. In each magazine, about 80% of the words are the 2000 high-frequency words. There are more word types and academic words in the intermediate-level magazines than those in the elementary-level ones. Let’s Talk in English has each word repeated most often. As to the vocabulary lists, the intermediate-level magazines contain more words above 2000 high-frequency words than the elementary-level ones do. Not only the target-level words but also the words of the other levels are listed in the vocabulary lists of the four magazines. 2. Readability—Measured by the readability formulas in AceReader, English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine are at similar levels, and they are more difficult than Let’s Talk in English and A+ English. Let’s Talk in English is the easiest one. The texts in Let’s Talk in English are at consistent difficulty levels, while those in the other three magazines are not. The texts with dialogues are the easiest texts, and the texts with practice of translating Chinese into English are the most difficult ones. Besides, the readability of the four magazines is influenced more by long words than by long sentences according to the position of the points plotted on Fry’s Readability Graph. 3. Speech rate—For the four magazines, the speech rates of text reading are slower than those of instructional programs. With respect to the text reading, English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine have similar speech rates, which are faster than that of A+ English and Let’s Talk in English. Let’s Talk in English is at the slowest rate. With respect to the instructional program, A+ English and English 4U have similar speech rates, which are faster than that of Let’s Talk in English, and slower than that of Live Interactive English Magazine. The text reading of the four magazines and the instructional programs of Let’s Talk in English have their speech rates closer to 120 w.p.m., which, according to the related studies, is the proper rate for nonnative learners. 4. Activity—In the everyday lessons, Let’s Talk in English are totally composed of conversations. A+ English includes conversations and reading, while English 4U and Live Interactive English Magazine include conversation, reading, and writing. The different proportions of conversation, reading, and writing show the emphasis that each magazine lays on its main content. Vocabulary list, vocabulary card, grammar, note, and Chinese translation commonly exist in all of the four magazines, while song, warm-up activity, follow-up activity, weekly test, simulated GEPT, and answer key only exist in certain magazines. 5. Package—CD, MP3, CD-ROM, radio program, website, weekly test, and school test formulating are contained in the package of each magazine. VCD and TV program are included only in Let’s Talk in English and A+ English.

Self-regulated learning is a pivot aspect of student learning and academic achievement. Certain SRL (self-regulated learning) models (Boekaerts 1997, Butetler & Philip 1995) help the researcher more understanding that students develop self-regulated learning and exert control over their own learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between determinants in English learning magazines as supplementary material and senior high school students’ involvement in self-regulated learning. This special issue addresses the complexity has meant little conclusive knowledge and thus needs for continuing exploration. The current study, administrated to a sample of 339 senior high school students of Taichung county, was measured by Pearson correlation and regression analysis which revealed that determinants in English learning magazine was significantly and positively related to students’ self-regulated learning. The results of this study also indicated that variables, content, and motivation in learning English material may display a stronger but not significant positive impact upon students’ self-regulated learning than a service quality in English learning magazine.

Low birth rate facilitates parental willingness to allocate more educational spending to their children. Nonetheless, children magazine have become one of the learning tools for children in the capacity of providing with vital extracurricular learning assistance. Since opinions from elementary school teachers do affect the parents acting in the best interest for their kids, and the teacher recommendation can also serve as the important reference index while parents are selecting children magazines. Hence, purpose of this research is to explore the vital views on each attribute of the teacher’s point of view as opposed to children magazines; in addition, various factors to respective impacts in selecting the subscription to children magazines are also explored. This research not only analyzes the level of impact to consumer’s selection behavior from the perspective of each factor identified, but also uses the binary logit modeling to construct a theoretical architecture for elementary school teachers as opposed to children magazine selection. Furthermore, this research not only conducted the calibrated model parameters and elasticity analyses, but also proposed recommendations based upon the findings from those analyses. And the research findings are as follow: 1. In all views for children attribute importance to children magazine, elementary school teachers acknowledged that “cultivate children’s reading proclivity”, “increase children’s extracurricular knowledge” and “assist children in knowledge learning, expand and broaden their horizons” would be the most important ones. 2. The cognitive variance analysis from different population statistics, within each level of the assistance for children from children’s magazine, in addition to different gender, marital status, age and seniority, all of the above would exhibit significant differences. And those from male students were significantly higher than those from the female; married significantly higher than single; those above 40 significantly higher than those under 40; those with over 10 years of seniority significantly higher than those below 10 years. 3. Consumers were also influenced by variables like pricing, content and giveaway while selecting children’s magazine. In another words, when criteria like “the lower the average price for each issue of the magazine”, “contents becoming more and more within the range of expectation” as well as “giveaways meeting the requirements of the subscribers” for a certain magazine were met, consumer would be prone to subscribe that magazine in interest. 4. Factors like teaching seniority and current post held by the teacher would also be the main factors influencing subscription to children’s magazine. Teachers with over 10 years in seniority and teachers working part-time in the administrative capacity would be more inclined to subscribe the magazine. 5. In the elasticity analysis, the direct elasticity for the Top945 was -0.127, and the cross elasticity was 0.171; direct elasticity for Global citizen 365 was -0.174 and the cross elasticity was.0.13 . 6. Marketing recommendation: It would be more appropriate by targeting the elementary school teachers who are female, married, over 40, seniority over 10years. In addition, in order to meet customer expectation, it would make sense to cooperate with the advertiser to lower the sales price for children magazine. In addition, it would also be proper to focus on the abundance in the magazine content and the setting for giveaways marketing should target to a specific group as well. In the future, it would make sense by expanding the subscriber base through sharing, developing electronic version of children magazine so as to expand to new market segments; enhance the communication, the service and the add-on-values; re-subscribe the old subscription in the past, and retain the subscribers in a long-term fashion

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the English-learning magazine (ELM) instruction on junior high school students’ reading comprehension and sentence-level writing ability. The outcomes were analyzed and discussed within different English proficiency levels in the experimental group, which were high-achiever group (HAG), mid-achiever group (MAG), and low-achiever group (LAG). Students’ attitudes towards the instruction of ELM were also examined within HAG, MAG, and LAG. This study recruited sixty participants of eighth-graders. One class of thirty students was the experimental group (EG), and the other class was the control group (CG). First, both the groups took the pre-tests of reading comprehension and sentence-level writing respectively. After that, EG received an eight-week instruction of ELM, in which Communicative Language Teaching and Cooperative Language Learning were incorporated. On the other hand, CG still studied ELM on their own and watched DVD programs as usual. After the intervention, both EG and CG took the post-tests of reading comprehension and sentence-level writing. Besides, CG got a handout extracted from the content of ELM one week before the post-tests while EG didn’t. Last, EG completed the questionnaire on students’ attitudes towards the instruction of ELM. The data were computed and compared by a one-way ANCOVA, a one-way ANOVA, Bonferroni post-hoc test, and one-sample T-test quantitatively and qualitatively. The main findings are summarized as follows. 1. There was a significant difference between EG and CG both in post-tests of reading comprehension and sentence-level writing. 2. In GE, both HAG and MAG significantly got higher gain scores in reading comprehension than LAG, but there was no significant difference between HAG and MAG. 3. In GE, there were significant differences within HAG, MAG, and LAG in sentence-level writing. Specifically, MAG’s gain score was higher than HAG’s, and that of HAG was higher than LAG. 4. Both HAG and MAG had more positive attitudes towards ELM and the instruction of it than LAG. Based on the results, it is suggested that teachers should implement the instruction of ELM because junior high school students are English beginners with inadequate prior knowledge. Teachers are also suggested to adopt Communicative Language Teaching and Cooperative Language into the teaching so that students can increase their learning interest and learn better.
