Abstract:
School magazines are a medium for students to practice and develop their journalistic potential. A student must have qualified journalistic knowledge to produce good writing in a magazine. For this reason, training and assistance in magazine writing are necessary so that school magazines continue to exist and are of higher quality. One school that has a school magazine is MA Al-Muayyad Surakarta. Journalism training is essential at this school because many students have not developed their writings properly. The methods used in this training are interviews, presentations, discussions, and article writing training. This training was held in April 2018. This training activity provides good benefits, especially for the training participants, because before the training was held, most of the magazine's contents took sources from the internet. However, after the training, the students' writing became original, the language used got better, and the rubric content more diverse.

Abstract:
This study examined the meaning of education by analyzing the cover, table of contents, and contents of the first issue of an educational magazine founded in the 1990s from the liberation of 1945 to the 1990s. The main contents of the study are as follows. First, the main theme of educational magazines launched during the liberation period in 1945 and the 1950s was ‘reconstruction and common sense of education’. Second, educational magazines launched in the 1960s and 1970s focused on 'enlightenment and popularization of education'. Third, educational magazines launched in the 1980s often focused on 'reformation and specialization of education'. Fourth, the educational magazine, launched in the 1990s, focused on nurturing talented people needed by our society and improving school education, and aimed at 'diversification and advancement of education'. These results suggest that today's educational magazines should not only play the role of information magazines that reflect the flow of education, but also focus on the production of high-quality articles tailored to readers.

Abstract:
The paper aims to describe the literacy movement initiated by Indonesian Government. Since there is disproportional distribution of literacy exposures between the pupils who are living in urban areas and the pupils who are living in rural areas, it needs important roles of teachers and school managements mainly for those at rural areas in developing and improving reading habits for their pupils. The wall magazines can be used as affordable media in grasping pupils’ reading interest at primary level. The appropriate procedures in using wall magazines at primary schools can support divergent purposes to make the pupils get interested in reading. The use of wall magazines is also intended to create reading environment for the pupils in order to learn and apply the literacy movement program at early level. The appropriate use of strategies in using wall magazine is planned to train the pupils learning how to read and think critically about the textual materials that are provided by using attractive and appropriate visual mode. The study would be conducted as case-study in describing the procedures and the use of wall magazine at SDN Pamolokan 3 at Sumenep as a part of Literacy Movement program at school (which known as Gerakan Literasi Sekolah or GLS). Abstract:
Globally the print media has made strides in publishing content that is appealing to readers. The Kenyan mainstream newspapers have established colourful and sensational pullouts to attract youthful audience. Among the most popular free pullout entertainment magazines is the ‘Pulse’ which is accessed by the youth in secondary schools and may have a behavioural impact on them. This paper analysed the frequency of content with elements of negative behaviour published in the Pulse that would likely motivate secondary school students to engage in practices such as sexual activities, alcohol consumption and night partying which may lead to teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, school dropouts, prostitution and drug abuse. A sample size of 46 magazines were purposively drawn from a study population of 52 weekly Pulse magazines running from January to December 2018. The revelation that the magazine published a high frequency of content with elements of negative behaviour was of concern due to the likelihood that the youth would engage in risky behaviour if given a chance leading to outcomes detrimental to their health and academic performance. The study will assist education policy makers, the media, and academicians in establishing ethical policies during the development of print media content.

Johor is often remembered as the state that witnessed the formation of the first Malay political party in this country, UMNO. Of similar significance, something that is often marginalised in Malaysian historiography, is the existence of myriad newspapers and magazines including the first women magazine in Malaya namely Bulan Melayu which was established in 1930. This article aims to examine the history of the emergence of newspapers and magazines in this state and their development before the Second World War. Some of the aspects looked into are the major locations in the publication of newspapers and magazines, the pioneers and factors contributing to its development. The study is using qualitative method and sources used in this research are newspapers and magazines that were published in Johor from the 1920s until 1941, besides official documents and records issued by the British and the Johor government. The findings of the research shows Johor’s involvement in newspapers and magazines before the Second World War was closely related to inspiration from the masses and the state in facing the pressure of British imperialism and as impact of modernisation undertaken by the state since the mid-19 century that witnessed development in the intellectual aspect that involved school teachers, religious schools, administrators and associations in the state.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous historiography of graphic design education in the mid-twentieth century is shaped by published theories and educational principles of a limited circle of design teachers. As a counterbalance, this article stresses the relevance of a marginalized source: design student magazines. It juxtaposes K and output, published in the early 1960s at the Basel School of Design and the Ulm School of Design. Both magazines intended to open critical debates at their schools, but took opposite paths regarding design, editorial concept, content of articles, and critical engagement with their respective schools' design philosophies. An analysis of their reception and context reveals the magazines' corrective potential for design education by raising crucial issues within the design discourse of the 1960s.

Abstract:
For more than twenty years, students at Rabun Gap High School, a conservative, traditionally organized public school in Appalachian Georgia, have published Foxfire books and magazines. Conceived by students in Eliot Wigginton's English classes, the project's publication of oral history grew into what was called cultural journalism. The national recognition and financial success of the Foxfire books and magazines led to the adoption of the approach by teachers throughout the country. However, many who attempted such projects did not recognize that Foxfire is not really a magazine, but a philosophy of education firmly grounded in principles of democratic, experiential education. Using the magazine as a device without the principles upon which Foxfire had been based often resulted in methods as traditional and teacher centered as those they were meant to replace. Recognizing this, Wigginton and the Foxfire staff began to carefully define the ingredients that led to the success of the Foxfire approach in Rabun County, and to look for ways to assist other teachers in adopting the philosophy and the approach in their classrooms. In this article, Wigginton describes Foxfire's core educational practices and the major aspects of the Foxfire staffs current work with teachers.

Abstract The origins of the illustrated press on the island of Majorca (Spain) date to the last two decades of the 19th century when visual records received a major push thanks to the consolidation of new graphic printing techniques, favouring more illustration and photography in the local press - an aspect that further strengthened in the early 20th century in news magazines. Subsequently, and running parallel to the development of international print media, photography was introduced into different media publications in Majorca, often adopting the term 'illustrated magazine'. And the news reports in these general or specialised illustrated publications are precisely where we come across different photographic and/or photojournalism reports on schools and education in general in Majorca, as well as illustrated advertising for education establishments. This article will offer an approach and analysis of the photographic resources contained in the different illustrated magazines on the island from the first three decades of the 20th century. We will also look at the image of schools from the period and the out-of-school education they provided, as well as the possible potential and uses the images represent for didactics in the history of education field.

Abstract:
Keywords: Italian academic pedagogical magazines, extensive historical works, educational publishing housesThis paper aims to reconstruct the main strands of Italian educational thought using academic pedagogical magazines as a mirror for scientific and political developments through the years. I shall follow a chronological order, indicating the main changes which have occurred in Italy since its unification, concentrating on cultural turns and academic shifts. Pedagogical and school magazines have been the object of quite a number of extensive historical works, followed by other studies on school and educational publishing houses. Giorgio Chiosso has been the leading figure in this research for many years, having directed national projects in pedagogical journals and publishing houses, which have provided important historical tools, such as the catalogues of Italian school and educational magazines 1820-1945 (Chiosso, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1997) and the catalogues of Italian pedagogical publishing houses in the XIX and XX centuries (Chiosso, 2003a, 2008). Whilst the pedagogical magazines before and after unification have been carefully catalogued, the educational journals of Republican Italy have yet to be researched. An updated short biography and bibliography of the quoted educationalists can be found in the recent biographical dictionary directed by Chiosso and Sani (2013).

Abstract:
The church press published important documents regarding the religious life of Romanians from Transylvania and Banat. This publication also included details regarding the religious life of the school from Banat. The Biserica şi Şcoala magazinewas published in the western historical Banat, in Arad. This was possible due to the fact that Timisoara, the most important city in Banat, had a Romanian Orthodox Deanery that was dependent on the Diocese of Arad, before the establishment of the Diocese of Timisoara in 1939.The Caransebes Diocese’ magazine Foaia Diecezană (The Diocesan Sheet) provided the clergy and the faithful with information on Christian spirituality. Along the aforementioned magazines, there were a few newspapers which have enriched this field's literature. Based on those covered by the study, we find that the media made an overwhelming contribution to the dissemination of the biblical information during that particular period of time.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveTo examine the nature of the link between food advertising in UK magazines aimed at children and young people and Internet food marketing, to establish whether consideration should be given to tightening existing controls.DesignA review and descriptive analysis of food advertising found in a sample of the top five magazine titles aimed at a range of ages of children and young people between November 2004 and August 2005 and of the Internet food marketing sites to which readers were directed.ResultsFood advertising appeared as ‘cover-mount’ free gifts and as part of the main bound issue. Children aged 6–10 years were the most frequent recipients of food-based free gifts, all of which were confectionery. No food advertising was found in magazines aimed at pre-school children and it formed a small percentage of total advertising in the magazines aimed at children of school age and above. Most food advertisements were for ‘less healthy’ foods, although advertisements for ‘healthier’ food products did appear infrequently. Almost half of food advertisements directed readers towards Internet food marketing sites. We found evidence that these sites are using at least some of the ‘marketing tricks’ which have been identified as a cause for concern.ConclusionsProposed restrictions on broadcast media may lead to more food advertising via other non-broadcast means. We suggest monitoring the effect of such changes in print and online advertising and that consideration be given to restricting marketing techniques used on websites aimed at children and young people.

The presented research is carried out in the context of the general plan of research works of the Book Chamber of Ukraine for 2020. The article is devoted to the Ukrainian Soviet periodicals of 1962, the electronic base of which is formed at this stage. The article prepared by the author raises the issue of children's periodicals of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, which, to date, remains insufficiently studied by scientists. Taking into account the special urgency and demand of this topic, the researcher conducted a content analysis of children's magazines published in the USSR during 1962 under the auspices of the Central Committee of the Leninist Communist Youth Union of Ukraine and the Republican Council of the All-Union Pioneer Organization. Lenin. We are talking about the magazine "Malyatko", designed for preschool children, the magazine "Barvinok", which was published for children of preschool and primary school age, the magazine "Pioneer", which reached the teenage audience. All these magazines still exist under their former names, with the exception of the magazine "Pioneer", which is now published under the name "Classmate". The processed editions were published in large editions, distributed among readers at symbolic prices and were distinguished by their powerful educational potential. The editorial boards of these journals have mastered and widely used acceptable for today's practical pedagogy forms of work with the younger generation. Children were instilled with high moral qualities, such as honesty, friendliness, diligence, devotion to the Fatherland, respect for the elderly, equal treatment of people of all races, nations and nationalities, care for nature and more. Magazines formed a culture of family reading, taught children to communicate with each other and adults. These publications had a deep Ukrainian studies content and were an example of exemplary knowledge of the Ukrainian literary language.

Abstract:
An information system is a set of tools used to obtain and manage information. At this time, the use of information systems in everyday life is very much and varied. Many companies or institutions are switching from conventional systems to computerized systems. This is because information systems can simplify business processes from traditional or conventional systems. School wall magazines are an important facility for students and schools to convey important information related to education, talent development and student careers. However, over time, conventional wall magazines have many problems such as damaged information sheets and limited information display space, the information on display must be accessed. directly causing students to crowd to get information, limiting access rights to display information. By using a qualitative method, this study succeeded in developing a software called the e-mading information system (SI EMA). in a structured way, SI EMA can be explained using the waterfall method. The creation of a website-based wall magazine aims to add value and function to conventional wall magazines to become more efficient and of high quality. The SI EMA website has changed the publication of conventional papers to be computerized, the use of paper media or printed documents has become electronic media, articles or written works are not easily lost because they have been documented on the website, the appearance of written works has become more attractive. With this renewal, problems can be resolved properly and are able to help schools and students not only in obtaining information more effectively and efficiently but also as a creative means to express their creativity.

The Covid-19 pandemic has made school libraries unable to provide their services, plus there is still a lack of school library programs to respond to the way of learning from offline to online. Even though libraries can use technology to continue to provide services for their users. The purpose of this research is to design library e-magazines at High School Libraries in Bandung city as a form of innovation for school library programs that can be run in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. This research can be used as an e-magazine blueprint that can be used at other school libraries. The research using a design and development model. The design of the e-magazine consists of three processes: 1) pre-production, which includes determining the theme, searching for articles, writing articles and correcting the text; 2) production, including magazine design, proofreading of design results, and trial printing; and 3) post-production, including printing and marketing. The results of the needs analysis show that suitable content in e-magazine are light reading types such as short stories, tips and tricks, various recommendations such as food, tourist attractions, movies, and books, as well as light like crossword puzzles. The response of librarians and students to the e-magazine is very good in terms of theme selection, material and language, and appearance. It is stated that the chosen theme is very relevant to the conditions and needs that occur. The responses obtained can then be used as an illustration and evaluation material for the next e-magazine design.

Abstract:
This study explored the variance in ocean literacy accounted for by student and school levels and examined the influence of these two predictors on senior high school students’ ocean literacy using a hierarchical linear model. Data were collected from 1944 students from 99 schools and used to construct the two-level hierarchical linear model. The results indicated that the variance in ocean literacy accounted for by students was larger than that accounted for by schools; approximately a quarter of the total variance in ocean literacy was accounted for by schools. At the student level, attitude toward the ocean and frequency of reading ocean-themed books or magazines were predictors of ocean literacy, whereas at the school level, school region and location were significant influential factors. This study’s results have significance for policy-making regarding ocean literacy improvement.

Abstract:
Many scholars know lola ridge (1873–1941) as a passionate, irish-born american poet and activist whose poetry was of-ten tied to American subjects, employed various traditional and avant-garde styles, invited a diverse readership, and “expressed a fiery awareness of social injustice” (Kay Boyle [McAlmon 15]). Her time as magazine editor, however, continues to be overlooked. In 1912 Ridge founded the Ferrer Association's journal Modern School and edited its first issue (Avrich 166). The periodical started as a radical, politically based newsletter for parents but soon became less political, publishing artistic and literary work by students of the association's school. Between late 1918 and early 1919, Ridge oversaw, along with several other associate editors, three issues of the avant-garde poetry journal Others. Ridge also organized the Others Lecture Bureau, which toured parts of the Midwest and hosted several literary parties for magazine contributors and supporters (Churchill 58). Ridge's leading editorial role occurred from February 1922 to April 1923, when she served as the American literary editor of Broom: An International Magazine of the Arts. Broom was an elaborate magazine praised by many, including William Carlos Williams, who exclaimed, “What a magazine that was! Too expensive for its time but superb to hold in the hand and to read” (187). Although publications that discuss Broom largely marginalize Ridge, the correspondence between her and Broom‘s expatriate editor and publisher, Harold Loeb, in files in Princeton's Department of Rare Books and Special Collections labeled “Broom Correspondence of Harold Loeb, 1920–1956,” shows that from the New York office Ridge orchestrated the magazine's recovery, making it one of the most widely circulated privately owned literary magazines of its time. She also created the magazine's standout “all-American” issue, which pushed against European influences and presented modernism as an American project in its own right. Ridge's pivotal role at Broom is noteworthy because the disagreements she had with Loeb highlight prescribed roles female editors encountered, polarize the modernist debates on both sides of the Atlantic, show her confronting one of modernism's well-known artists, and demonstrate how the fallout over the American issue irrevocably affected Broom‘s future.

PurposeThis article examines the impact of the 1919 influenza pandemic on the life and culture of Australian universities, and the curious absence of sustained discussion about the crisis in university magazines. It considers two contexts, from the perspective of the general university population, and from the particular focus of medical students.Design/methodology/approachThe primary source for this analysis is based on detailed reading of university magazines across three universities, as well as other primary and secondary literature. The article was written during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, which has limited access to some other magazines held in library collections, but the corpus of material is more than sufficient.FindingsThis article shows that the pandemic further deferred the resumption of university life after a hiatus during the First World War. The failure to identify the causal agent limited technical discussion in medical school magazines.Originality/valueThis is one of the first dedicated studies of the effect of the 1919 influenza pandemic on Australian universities. It joins a growing body of work considering the effect of the influenza on different community groups.

Abstract:
The article analyzes newspaper and magazine materials about schools named after F. M. Dostoevsky (1881‒1917). Most of the publications concern the history of the parish school in Staraya Russa, but the authors found out that at the turn of the 20th century several more attempts were made to open an educational institution in memory of the writer, namely in Kiev and Kazan provinces. The article provides a brief overview of the history of other schools that ever bore the name of F. M. Dostoevsky (Shkid in Petrograd, a gymnasium in Harbin, a school in Dostoevo, school No. 2 in Staraya Russa, school No. 1148 in Moscow). During this period, the press began a broad discussion of the idea of perpetuating the writer’s memory by opening public schools named in his honor; thanks to the initiative of “Novoe Vremya” newspaper, a fundraising campaign was initiated to establish the first school in Staraya Russa. The accents and assessments of the Russian press are of particular value: they are an expression of both the public attitude towards F. M. Dostoevsky, and a means of preserving the nation's memory of him. The press materials allow to track the attitude of people to the heritage of F. M. Dostoevsky and to establish the motives that inspired representatives of various social strata to donate funds for the construction of schools in memory of the writer. The following sources are used as a foundation: chronicles, reports and other texts from the newspapers “Novoe Vremya,” “Moskovskie Vedomosti,” “Kazansky Telegraph,” “Nedelya,” “Volzhsky Vestnik,” “Starorusskaya Pravda,” “Volkhovsky Listok,” “Kazanskie Gubernskie Vedomosti”; articles from the magazines “Istorichesky Vestnik,” “Novgorodskiye eparhialnye Vedomosti,” and others.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is often hit by natural disasters. The potential for co-occurrence with other natural disasters can exacerbate human losses and cause chaos. After the occurrence of natural disasters, in addition to causing many casualties and damage to infrastructure, the threat of health risks becomes a serious problem. Especially the emergence of infectious diseases. The number of fatalities indicates that community preparedness and mitigation against disasters are still poor. Disaster mitigation is the knowledge that students must have to have good preparedness behavior. Education related to disasters is usually based on theoretical knowledge so that it becomes less meaningful for students. For this reason, it is necessary to make efforts to increase the value of student preparedness with interesting learning media, one of which is by developing an e-magazine of disease outbreak disaster mitigation materials to improve student preparedness. Based on the results of observations in one high school in Bogor City, it was found that the level of student preparedness was still relatively low at 42%. This study aims to determine the effect of e-magazines on disease outbreak disaster mitigation materials on increasing student preparedness, as well as to determine the effectiveness of e-magazines on disease outbreak disaster mitigation materials. The study was conducted using the Research and development method using the ADDIE model (analyze, design, development, implementation, evaluation). The population in this study were students of class X MIPA with a sample of 30 respondents. The results showed that the e-magazine was able to increase the student's preparedness score to 69.67% which was in the medium category. The effectiveness of learning media can be seen from the responses of students and teachers. The percentage of the average value of student responses is 89.5% with a very effective category. Based on the results of the teacher's response questionnaire, the percentage was 84.17% with a very effective category.

Educational influence is among the essential tasks of school activities. It should be performed by all the teachers and especially by form tutors. The modern model of the form tutor was formed during the interwar period. After Poland regained independence, it also gained the opportunity of creating its own schools and of conducting educational tasks in accordance with the needs of the country and the society. Educating the youth became one of the most important tasks. The duties of form tutors had to be redefined, too. Abstract:
In the 1890s progressive educators like John Dewey proposed expansive ideas about integrating school and society. Working to make the boundaries between classroom learning and pupils' natural environment more permeable, for example, Dewey urged teachers to connect intellectual and practical elements within their curricula. Highly visible and widespread examples of this integrative goal were the school gardens that flourished from the 1890s well into the twentieth century. Evidence of their presence is recorded in newspapers, national magazines, and annual school reports whose illustrations typically portrayed well-dressed children cultivating large gardens next to impressive urban school buildings. Whether in large cities or country settings, school gardens were expressions of modern and progressive education of the sort encouraged by Dewey. Gardens were encouraged in theory and in practice not only at the laboratory school affiliated with the University of Chicago but also in normal schools across the country (Figure 1).

Abstract:
In Britain, a tradition of scientists actively communicating new developments in their fields with the general public has existed since the Victorian era. During the early twentieth century there were major developments in the nature of scientific communication with the rise of the mass media represented by popular magazines, newspapers and books, alongside the creation of a national radio broadcasting network. Many professional scientists took advantage of these changes to develop non-specialist careers through writing articles, books or radio talks for the enlightenment of the general public or the education of school children. However, most of this bibliographical material is ephemeral and may be ignored when considering the careers of the most distinguished scientists. One such scientist whose non-specialist activities have been generally undervalued is Munro Fox FRS (1889–1967). He was an eminent zoologist who, alongside a successful research career, had a well-developed non-specialist output promoting biological subjects that included many magazine articles and books as well as a substantial number of radio talks, particularly within the British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) Broadcasts to Schools programme.

Abstract:
Schools have not fully utilized technological developments in processing data such as student data, teacher data, student attendance, and student report cards, and have not been integrated with the school system due to the lack of an academically adaptable application system. The use of media or dissemination of information is still done by pasting pamphlets on the walls of magazines, as well as storing academic data in archives in a form that is difficult to find. This is considered less effective in school management, given the rapid development of technology today. With the problems that the authors found, an online report card information system application will be designed using the Waterfall method, to make it easier to manage administrative and academic data to be more organized in decision-making in the school environment.
