PurposeOver the years, efforts to ensure equal participation of girls in school in Nigeria have been met with some setbacks, amidst significant progress in mobilising communities for gender equality and mainstreaming. The purpose of this paper is to explore a number of features associated with sexual maturation that affect girls’ non-enrolment, limited attendance, performance at school and gender inequality in primary and secondary education in Nigeria.Design/methodology/approachThe analytical engagement with the capability approach draws out elements of inequalities and demonstrates that issu

Recent evaluations of reforms to improve low-performing schools have almost exclusively focused on shorter term effects. In this study, we extend the literature by examining the sustainability and maturation of two turnaround models in Tennessee: the state-led Achievement School District (ASD) and district-led local Innovation Zones (iZones). Using difference-in-differences models, we find overall positive effects on student achievement in iZone schools and null effects in ASD schools. Additional findings suggest a linkage between staff turnover and the effectiveness of reforms. ASD schools ex

Abstract:
Much attention is given to preventing teen pregnancy in the adolescent years, but primary prevention can and should start at a much younger age. Prevention strategies should be targeted at pre-adolescents with parents as leaders in the effort; however, healthcare providers, school systems, trusted adults, and the media are also critical components of this prevention team. This chapter discusses pediatric brain maturation, emphasizes the importance of adult-youth relationships, briefly reviews the risk factors associated with teen pregnancy, and explores methods of prevention that can be applied throughout the pre-adolescent stage of development.

Abstract:
Since the state institutionalization of migrant labour began in the Philippines, countless children have been ‘left behind’ bereft of one, or even both, parents. Consequently, the moral evaluation of familial and financial responsibility has intensified. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork in the various institutions involved in the quotidian lives of young people, this chapter uses Cheryl Mattingly’s (2013) notion of the ‘moral laboratory’ at home and in school to explore lived engagements with money, morality, and mobility. In the reimagining and pursuit of future possibilities beyond a life of poverty and unemployment, this chapter contends that young people’s experimentation with money as a form of mobile or migrant aspiration reflects their strategic moral values and maturation.

Abstract:
It is believed that a combination of certain genes and a number of early life risk factors probably leads to subtle abnormalities in brain development, which set the stage for the later development of psychosis. It is unlikely that only one gene can cause psychosis. Instead, a number of genes each play a small role in a person’s risk for developing psychosis. The abnormal brain development that happens early in life among people who later develop psychosis is very subtle and usually remains undetected and quiet. School difficulties and social problems may develop during childhood and adolescence. In addition to the subtle abnormalities in early brain development, additional subtle abnormalities may also happen during the important period of adolescent brain maturation. Research suggests that adolescent drug use, especially marijuana use, increases one’s risk of developing psychosis.

Abstract:
Play plays an important role in the child's emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Children play a role in social relations with social behavior, coming from the top of social conflict, social maturation, and self-esteem. The experiences gained while playing games give the child the ability to find solutions to the problems they face in the social environment. The game, which is the main object of amusement, has moved from the social environment to the virtual atmosphere as a result of technological developments. The main theme of this research is violent games, which are often played by children in elementary school age. Many have come up with the fact that violent visual and textual codes are being used. In this context, in regional surveys conducted in Bolu province, digital games played mostly by 8- to 12-year-old children were determined by face-to-face interview with children. Violent elements in these digital games have been discussed within the framework of relevant theoretical approaches through three games that children play most.

Abstract:
Aldous Huxley once said that man was a pharmacologist before he was a farmer. Although written records rarely go back more than 5,000 or 6,000 years, there is reason to believe that humans did indeed experience the effects of a variety of drugs much earlier, perhaps even before the rise of agriculture some 12,000 years ago in the Nile Valley. Likely drugs available to the ancients include opiates, cocaine, tetrahydrocannabinol, cathinone, and numerous hallucinogens. But these were drugs in their crude natural forms: the opium poppy, coca leaves, hemp, khat, and a variety of other plant sources. Identification of pure chemicals and a science of drugs was much slower in coming. Pharmacology had to wait for the rise early in the 19th century of organic chemistry, largely in Germany, and physiology, chiefly in France and England. Pharmacology was born of the marriage of these two disciplines. Signifying its maturation in this country, the first department of pharmacology was established at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1893. Today, pharmacology is taught as a basic medical science, along with anatomy, pathology, physiology, biochemistry, and microbiology, to every medical student. Each of the drugs I mentioned earlier will be discussed in detail in the chapters that follow, but before we do this we need a basic pharmacological vocabulary and a little knowledge of how drugs act. Pharmacology deals with the interaction of chemicals with a living system: the human body. Although drugs act on every element of the body, we will be most interested in that most complex of organs, the brain. We are aware that a drug has acted upon our brains by the effects that it produces. These effects may be as direct and unequivocal as vomiting after apomorphine or convulsing after strychnine. These effects may be of such subtlety as to inspire poetry or to stimulate thoughts of God. Diffuse, relaxed pleasure or orgasmic high; tranquility or terror: Drugs can produce any of these reactions and more. Some drugs may even inspire us to love our fellow man.

Fink MD, Max. "Pediatric ECT." In Electroconvulsive Therapy. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195365740.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of ECT in the treatment of adolescents and children is not well understood. The experience is limited and poorly documented, especially in pre-pubescent children. For much of the twentieth century, child and adolescent psychiatrists believed that the mental disorders of children and adolescents are psychologically, not biologically, determined. Psychological attitudes and family interactions were considered the cause of the pathology of the disorders. In the past two decades interest has shifted to biological causes and treatments. Depression and mania, autism, anorexia nervosa, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are now recognized in children and adolescents with increasing frequency. These shifts in attitude encourage greater interest in medication trials, and with these, increasing tolerance for trials with ECT. The renewed interest in the role of ECT in pediatric patients was shown at a 1994 conference when experts reported an additional 62 case reports beyond the 94 that had been described in publications. Patients between 14 and 20 years of age with major depressive syndromes, delirious mania, catatonia, or acute delusional psychoses had been successfully treated with ECT, usually after other treatments had failed. No reports of harm to age-related faculties, such as impaired maturation, growth, and the capacity to learn, were presented. On the contrary, the resolution of their mental disorders encouraged the young people to complete school and continue their education. No adjustments to the adult ECT protocol were required except that close attention was given to energy dosing. Adolescents require very little energy to induce an effective seizure. No reporter described instances of uncontrolled seizures. Some clinicians, faced with seriously ill adolescents with features that would encourage ECT if the features were seen in adults, now recommend ECT. Examples of the successful treatment of melancholia, psychosis, mania, and catatonia dot the literature. Efficacy is reported in patients with severe mental retardation and in those with self-injurious repetitive behavior and catatonia grafted onto various forms of autism. These reports are sufficiently encouraging to loosen the usual injunctions against the use of ECT in adolescents. In 2004, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offered official practice guidelines for the use of ECT in adolescents that closely follow the guidelines for treatment in adults.
