Abstract:
Ijime or bullying is a common problem in Japanese schools, and even, ijime actions sometimes result in the victims or the victims commit to suicide. Ijime is also depicted in the Grotesqe novel on a character, Kazue Sato. Kazue Sato is a girl who desperately wants to enroll an elite girl school, Q school. The school is for students from high social class. Nevertheless, by passing the strict exams, intelligent students from different social classes can go to this school. Article elaborates the relationship between social class differences in the actions of ijime, using a corpus of works Natsuo Kirino’s novel, Grotesque. After analyzing the data with descriptive method of analysis, it is found that there is a relationship between social class differences and ijime actions. Students from different social classes, although they are cleverer, cannot mingle with students from higher social classes. In fact, students from lower social classes experience ijime actions from other students.

Abstract:
School choice expansion in recent decades has weakened the strong link between neighborhoods and schools created under a strict residence-based school assignment system, decoupling residential and school enrollment decisions for some families. Recent work suggests that the neighborhood-school link is weakening the most in neighborhoods experiencing gentrification. Using a novel combination of individual, school, and neighborhood data that link children to both assigned and enrolled schools, this study examines family, school, and neighborhood factors that shape whether parents enroll in the assigned local school. I find that parents are more likely to opt out of neighborhood schools in gentrifying neighborhoods compared with non-gentrifying neighborhoods when nearby choice options are available. Recent movers to gentrifying neighborhoods bypass local schools more compared with parents who have lived in the neighborhood longer. Results have implications for thinking about neighborhood-school linkages in an era of school choice and urban change.

Abstract:
Education ministries worldwide have promoted community engagement through school committees. This paper presents results from a large field experiment testing alternative approaches to strengthen school committees in public schools in Indonesia. Two novel treatments focus on institutional reforms. First, some schools were randomly assigned to implement elections of school committee members. Another treatment facilitated joint planning meetings between the school committee and the village council (linkage). Two more common treatments, grants and training, provided resources to existing school committees. We find that institutional reforms, in particular linkage and elections combined with linkage, are most cost-effective at improving learning. (JEL H52, I21, I25, I28, O15)

Full text
Abstract:
English language enjoys a high status in Hong Kong. Many parents enroll their children to language classes at a very young age aiming to get them into well-regarded schools for a better prospect. One way that can help learners improve English proficiency is through reading. However, when local students are streamed into different secondary schools, the motivation to read is lowered. This thesis aims at highlighting the different learning contexts of our students that contribute to reading. A new genre, graphic novel, is used to investigate the effectiveness to motivate secondary school students to read. Factors are also identified which may facilitate the revival of the interest of students of different backgrounds and abilities in reading. The study consists of 8 Form 3 (grade 9) students and 2 secondary English teachers. 5 students are studying in a secondary school with English as medium of instruction (EMI) and the other 3 students are studying in a secondary school with Chinese as medium of instruction (CMI). The 2 teachers are working in these two secondary schools respectively. This research was conducted using an action research approach. Questionnaires, interviews and students’ journals were used to achieve the aim of the study. The results reveal that graphic novel can positively motivate secondary school students to read. Teachers can also make use of the features of the genre to make the lessons more interesting. However, more research needs to be done about the introduction of the genre in classrooms and the value of the genre in improving the language proficiency.<br>published_or_final_version<br>Education<br>Master<br>Master of Education

Abstract:
This thesis is centred on the work of Portuguese writer José Régio (1901-1969). He was a teacher-writer and, arguably, the most philosophical of Portuguese school novel authors. In his novel ‘A Drop of Blood’ (1945), Régio shows interest in the formation of the artist as the special object of education – the ‘marked man’ –, whose sensitivity distances him irremediably from the crowd. He adopted the radical individualism of Nietzsche not in order to be ‘for’ or ‘against’ this or that schooling model but to exemplify the perpetual clash, inherent in mankind, between the individual and the group, the artist and the non-artistic person, the young and the adult, the son and the father and the self and the world.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, May, 2020<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>In this dissertation, I examine the evaluation of novel ideas in two essays. In the first, I, along with Hong Luo and Jeffrey Macher, study a novel, low-cost approach to aggregating judgment from a large number of industry experts on ideas that they encounter in their normal course of business in the film industry, where customer appeal is difficult to predict and investment costs are high. The Black List, an annual publication, ranks unproduced scripts based on anonymous nominations from film executives. This approach entails an inherent trade-off: low participation costs enable high response rates; but nominations lack standard criteria, and which voters see which ideas is unobservable and influenced by various factors.<br>Despite these challenges, we find that such aggregation is predictive: listed scripts are substantially more likely to be released than observably similar but unlisted scripts, and, conditional on release and investment levels, listed scripts generate higher box office revenues. We also find that this method mitigates entry barriers for less-experienced writers as: (i) their scripts are more likely to be listed and to rank higher if listed; (ii) being listed is associated with a higher release rate. Yet, the gap in release probabilities relative to experienced writers remains large, even for top-ranked scripts. In the second essay, I move from the question of the abstract value of an idea to the relative value given one's past and resources. In markets which require architectural changes for established firms, prior research claims incumbents must best the young firms imprinted by the new technology at the dominant design.<br>If they cannot, they should seek to avoid the market altogether. In contrast, this paper suggests that rather than compete for the dominant design, incumbents can succeed by focusing on niche segments that are proximate to their core business. This paper finds support for this strategy in console game makers' response to the rise of mobile games. Using a novel method to measure distance from the dominant design, the analysis shows that deviating from the dominant design was associated with greater revenue for console publishers, while mobile publishers observed the opposite result.<br>by J. Traditionally, these cell lines are produced from mammalian host organisms, primarily Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, due to their unique ability to secrete human-like glycosylated proteins. The CHO platform has undergone significant optimization throughout the industry over the past 30 years, however, productivity and efficiency improvements are now becoming harder to realize. Alternative hosts offer a unique opportunity to drive significant cost of goods improvements throughout the biologic drug manufacturing process. Microbial hosts benefit from low genomic complexity, fast doubling times, and can grow to high cell densities in low-cost media. The yeast strain, Pichia pastoris, combines these advantages with the ability to secrete glycosylated products at equivalent product quality levels as CHO-based processes.<br>The Alternative Host Consortium, an MIT-industry partnership, is focused on the advancement of Pichia and other alternative hosts to eventually drive broader commercial utilization and help curb the rising cost of biologic medicines. This project aimed to quantify the strategic advantage of the Pichia host in Amgen's pipeline, and determine when, why and how such a product would be manufactured. The first segment of the work presented here includes various bioprocess development experiments performed to establish proof-of-concept protein production data in Pichia. The results show successful production of two relatively simple proteins at concentrations similar to existing published results. Additionally, chemically defined media and controlled fed-batch fermentation experiments were run to better mimic manufacturing scale operations. The second segment of the project focused on quantifying the strategic cost advantage of the Pichia platform compared with CHO.<br>The business case analysis centered on potential raw material and plant time savings to determine the critical Pichia process features required to be cost competitive.<br>by Ellen Coleman.<br>M.B.A.<br>S.M.<br>M.B.A. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management<br>S.M. Eriksen, Harley. "The Feasibility And Validity Of Novel Dietary Assessment Methods In A Pre-School Setting." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2016. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/642.

Full text
Abstract:
To properly evaluate initiatives targeting children's fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption, we need feasible and valid dietary assessment methods that are time, cost, and resource effective. The objectives of this study were to test the feasibility and validity of two methods, digital imaging (DI) and aggregate plate waste (APW), for assessing children's FV consumption. UVM dietary assessment team graduate students prepared and distributed FV snacks in two pre-school classrooms over 30 consecutive school days. Feasibility of APW was tested by recording the frequency and weight of waste sorting errors by pre-school children and performing paired t-tests comparing uncorrected and corrected FV waste. Feasibility was tested for DI by determining the total number of individual FV snacks from which FV consumption could be estimated using the digital images. Validity was tested for DI using paired t-tests to compare FV consumption as assessed by DI against actual consumption as assessed by weighed plate waste (WPW). A total of 159 cluster APW weights were recorded during the 20 days of APW collection, with an overall mean difference of 0.57 grams (p=0.440) between uncorrected and corrected FV waste. Researchers were able to capture 100-percent usable digital images, effectively displaying 214 individual FV snack servings over the 10-day DI study period. Percent agreement between the two digital image coders was 99.1-percent. DI estimations for individual FV item and cumulative consumption were strongly correlated with WPW (all above r=0.97). Overall FV consumption as estimated by DI differed from WPW by less than one gram, and DI estimations for individual FV items differed from WPW by no more than two grams. Paired t-tests revealed no significant difference between DI estimations of clementine (p=0.954) and peapod (p=0.806) consumption and WPW measurements. However, paired t-tests indicated statistically significant differences between DI and WPW measurements for overall (p=0.001), grape (p=0.031), carrot (p=0.008), and pepper (p=0.027) consumption. Both methods were feasible for assessing mean FV consumption. DI estimations for individual FV items and cumulative consumption were strongly correlated with WPW, suggesting that despite statistical significance between DI and WPW measurements in some cases, the DI method is still precise for mean FV consumption evaluation. APW may be especially advantageous for rapid and efficient evaluation of behavior change in response to interventions targeting children's FV consumption. Due to ease of administration and instantaneous results, the APW method reduces the need for trained research staff to be present, drastically increasing accessibility to group-level dietary assessment.

Abstract:
The article studies two different Russian translations of Jane Austen's “Pride and Prejudice”: those by I. S. Marshak and A. Gryzunova. The two of these texts were compared on the basis of the family dialogues in the novel. The object of study is the phraseological units used within these dialogues. It is shown that the translation of phraseological units in the novel can be interpreted in terms of the “squaring of a circle”, one of the translator's strategies not skipping the “close angles”, and the other one, on the contrary, intentionally smoothing them.

Abstract:
The Promotion and Practice Handwashing Kit (PPHWK), a robust, user-friendly handwashing station, and Mum’s Magic Hands (MMH), a creative hygiene promotion strategy, were evaluated in a clustered randomized controlled trial in Kyaka II refugee settlement in Uganda. The trial evaluated whether their provision increased handwashing with soap practice among residents, with a focus on three community intervention arms and two school-based intervention arms. The findings outlined in this report suggest that exposure to both the PPHWK and MMH increased hygiene knowledge and handwashing behaviour with soap, and improved health outcomes. Intervention households also preferred the PPHWK over existing handwashing stations, typically a basic bucket with a tap.

Abstract:
The paper examines the effects of nonpharmaceutical interventions on transmission of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as captured by its reproduction rate 𝑅t. Using cross-country panel data, the paper finds that while lockdown measures have strong effects on 𝑅t, gathering bans appear to be more effective than workplace and school closures. Ramping up the testing and tracing of COVID-19 cases is found to be especially effective in controlling the spread of the disease where there is greater coverage of paid sick leave benefits. Workplace and school closures are found to have large negative effects on gross domestic product compared with other measures, suggesting that a more targeted approach can be taken to keep the epidemic controlled at lower cost.

Abstract:
This paper presents a systematic overview of the evidence of violence against women in the Central America, Mexico, Panama, Haiti, and Dominican Republic region and examines its impact on the well-being of women and their children. Population-based surveys show that violence against women remains a widespread issue in the region. The proportion of women who have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime varies between 13% and 53%; Panama has the lowest rate while Mexico and El Salvador have the highest. The percentage of women who have experienced violence within private spheres ranges between 17% and 24%. Also, homicidal violence targeting women remains a major problem in the region. Using a novel propensity score reweighting technique, we assess the impact of violence on a series of outcome variables related to a womans health and socioeconomic condition. We find evidence that violence against women negatively affects victims reproductive and physical health as well as their fertility preferences. We also find evidence that violence against mothers has an adverse effect on childrens advancement in school and overall health.
