Abstract:
English language enjoys a high status in Hong Kong. Many parents enroll their children to language classes at a very young age aiming to get them into well-regarded schools for a better prospect. One way that can help learners improve English proficiency is through reading. However, when local students are streamed into different secondary schools, the motivation to read is lowered. This thesis aims at highlighting the different learning contexts of our students that contribute to reading. This thesis is centred on the work of Portuguese writer José Régio (1901-1969). He was a teacher-writer and, arguably, the most philosophical of Portuguese school novel authors. In his novel ‘A Drop of Blood’ (1945), Régio shows interest in the formation of the artist as the special object of education – the ‘marked man’ –, whose sensitivity distances him irremediably from the crowd. He adopted the radical individualism of Nietzsche not in order to be ‘for’ or ‘against’ this or that schooling model but to exemplify the perpetual clash, inherent in mankind, between the individual and the group,

Abstract:
This essay’s aim is to investigate how Rowling uses her novel Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets to criticize racism in her magical world and ours. A secondary aim concerns how Rowling’s critical stance creates ways to resist racism for readers in the EFL classroom. Therefore, a comparison from a Critical Race Theory (CRT) perspective is made with focus on certain sequence comparisons between the novel and the film. Teachers need to highlight problems like racism in classrooms and fantasy novels and movies are exceptional tools to raise awareness and teach critical thinking to students.

Abstract:
Value of leather produced from sheep is determined by its quality and looseness is one of the quality attributes that determines the value of the leather. As of now, looseness in sheep skin can be determined only after the tanning process is done and it is a long and expensive process to treat the looseness in skins after the tanning process. An interdigital sensor based sensing system has been developed which works on the principle of sensing technique based on interaction of electric field with the materials under test. Finite element software has been used for analysis and design of sensors

Abstract:
Children growing up in poor areas with high crime rates are shown to easily get involved in violent actions and criminal gangs. In South Africa, despite considerable efforts to reduce youth delinquency, youth crime rates are still disturbingly high – specifically, in the townships of the Cape Flats. This paper points out an important aspect previously unaddressed by most youth crime prevention: the subconscious roots of youth crime. What if we could develop youth crime prevention programs that manage to impact the subconscious behavioral patterns of youth in high crime areas? This paper propos

Planar electromagnetic sensing system has been used as one of the NDT methods to evaluate the material properties i.e., to evaluate near-surface properties such as conductivity, permeability and dielectric properties. The applications of planar electromagnetic sensors will depend on both the characteristic of the sensor type chosen and also the characteristic of material under test. Conventional planar interdigital sensors and novel planar interdigital sensors have been designed, fabricated and tested for detection of dangerous marine biotoxins in seafood. Our main objective is to sense the pr

Abstract:
This study examined the effects and efficacy of two vocational instructional interventions - a Hand-Held Computer intervention versus a Staff Model intervention - as vocational instructional tools for high school students with autism and mental retardation. Specifically, the study analyzed the effects of these two treatments on the completion of authentic novel job tasks within a local department store. This research indicated the provision of specific technology as an instructional model positively influenced participants' ability to: accurately complete tasks, exercise increased independence

Abstract:
Comics, graphic novels, and manga differ appreciably from textual narrative formats, and materials with increasingly visual elements have found their way into progressive and student-centered library collections. But many educators and librarians still resist inclusion of graphic narratives in school libraries and devalue the reading practice of students who prefer more visual texts. Using the framework of radical change, which posits that both text conventions and reader expectations for text are increasingly multimodal as they possess characteristics of evolving digital media, this study con

"Novel Chemistry Using Molecular Beams." Tulane University, 2014.

Abstract:
Molecular beam methods provide rich possibilities for producing and studying novel species. These can include (1) clusters that would not be accessible in conventional gas phase chemistry and (2) generation and stabilization of reactive species. The methods that allow for (2) can be extended to (3) survey of evolving product chemistry following an initial fast impulse (photolysis, pyrolysis, electrical discharge) on some reactant. The projects undertaken touch on all three of these areas, but the centerpiece and most challenging project applies to the production, for the first time, of several
