Abstract:
Typically, school administrators determine their school’s security practices, but parental involvement may also play an important role in school security decisions. Data from the 2015‐2016 School Survey on Crime and Safety (SSOCS 2016) was used to examine the relationship between parental involvement and the presence of physically invasive security practices in secondary schools. Invasive security was defined as the emplacement of metal detectors, contraband sweeps or drug sniffing canines. Analyses revealed that high levels of school-based parent engagement were associated with lower odds of

Harsh and reactionary school security measures, including policing, surveillance technology, and emergency preparedness strategies increased substantially in the two decades following the mass shooting at Columbine High School in 1999. These strategies have limited empirical support for preventing violence in general and mass shootings, in particular. Instead, they have proven to be problematic, often doing more harm than good by criminalizing student misbehavior, contributing to negative school climate, and having psychological impacts on students’ perceptions of safety. Research on students’ perceptions of fear in school settings has proliferated, specifically as recent school shootings and the media blitz surrounding these events contribute to student and administrator concern. Inquiries into the topic suggest that many of the security protocols utilized by schools, such as target hardening approaches, may have a negative impact on student experiences and increase fear. However, in light of the massive social change experienced by today’s students, through the form of both high-profile school shootings and increased security after 9/11, more recent data are

The Ministry of Education has been installing combined security and smoke detection alarm system in schools since 1991 as a measure to protect schools from fire and arson. The costs and benefits of this system are compared to an automatic sprinkler system. The security and smoke detection alarm system provides early warning in the event of a fire.
