Abstract:
The major objective of the study was to compare the performance of girls studying physical science in single sex schools and those in co-educational schools. Three research questions were raised and one hypothesis formulated. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design using a sample of forty students’ randomly selected from two single – sex and two co – educational schools from the Manzini region of Swaziland. Data was collected using the Swaziland General Certificate of Secondary Examination results and a 10 – item 5 - scale Likert type of questionnaire. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). T-test was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05level of significance. The findings from this study showed that girls from single-sex schools perform significantly better in physical science than girls from co-educational schools. Social factors have the greatest influence on girl’s physical science performance, while school management issues have the least influence. It was concluded that performance of girls in single-sex schools is significantly different from the performance of girls from co-educational schools and social factors have the greatest influence on the physical science performance of girls. It was therefore recommended that teachers in co-educational school should do everything possible to improve the performance of girls in their schools and teachers in both schools should provide guidance and counseling services in order to educate the girls on the effects of social factors such as peer pressure on their physical science performance.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the management techniques used by high school physical education teachers immediately before (preactive) and after (reactive) student behavior. Eight experienced physical educators were videotaped as they each taught four lessons of their regular schedule. Formal and informal interviews with the teachers were audiotaped and/or recorded in field notes. Management techniques observed during lessons or described during interviews were analyzed by deduction using the 22 categories of Henkel’s (1991) Physical Education Pupil Control Inventory (PEPCI). New categories were developed by induction to accommodate observed or discussed techniques that could not be coded into Henkel’s categories. These secondary physical education teachers used 28 different management techniques, including 21 (75%) from Henkel’s PEPCI and 7 (25%) others observed by the researcher or described by the teachers. Findings contribute to a foundation for further research into the positive management of student behavior.

Abstract:
Background: Current research on concussion incidence in youth athletes (age <18 years) is small and limited by variability in injury reporting and diagnostic methodology. Hypothesis: Concussion injuries commonly occur in high school sports programs. The likelihood of concussion among student-athletes (aged 13-18 years) depends on the sport they are participating in as well as the sex of the athlete. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Level of Evidence: Level 4. Methods: A retrospective analysis of all Hawaii high school athletes aged 13 to 18 years participating in 14 sports from 2011 through 2017 was performed as part of a statewide standardized concussion assessment and management program. Results: A total of 5993 concussions were identified among 92,966 athletes. The overall concussion rate was 0.96 (95% CI, 0.94-0.99). Girls’ judo had the highest concussion rate (1.92; 95% CI, 1.68-2.17) followed by football (1.60; 95% CI, 1.53-1.66). The concussion rate for boys (1.0; 95% CI, 0.97-1.03) was higher than that for girls (0.91; 95% CI, 0.87-0.95); however, in 4 of the 5 sports in which both girls and boys participated, girls had a higher rate of concussion injury. Conclusion: The likelihood of concussion among student-athletes aged 13 to 18 years may be higher than previously thought and varies depending on sport and sex. Clinical Relevance: Epidemiologic data on concussion injury in children and adolescents are useful in accurately determining the relative risks of high school sports participation and may be valuable in determining the appropriate allocation of health care and scholastic resources for student-athletes, as well as the impact of rule and training modifications designed to improve participant safety.

Abstract:
This study aims to reveal the role and participation of the community in the implementation of School-Based Management (SBM) and the factors supporting and inhibiting implementation. The research was conducted using observation sheet guides and interview guidelines supported by a review of school administration documents, through a qualitative approach to the interactive analysis model of Miles and Huberman. The results showed that the implementation of SBM was quite successful; this was indicated by a significant change in schools, namely the increase in school quality and increased public interest in Muhammadiyah Mutihan Elementary School. In the implementation of SBM, the school is more flexible because it can manage schools independently, making programs based on the school's needs and abilities. Public participation is quite good; the community always supports and helps school activities and controls the school. Supporting factors in implementing SBM are the community, alumni, foundations, and sponsors. While the inhibiting factor is limited land, schools cannot provide sports fields for students and the limited ability to accompany teachers.

Full text
Abstract:
School screening for scoliosis can be highly effective in detecting those relevant curvatures that would benefit most from the available conservative treatment at an advantageously early stage. The correct age group of adolescent females is targeted, and routine examination can be administered with relative ease. The program is most accurate when performed with a primary Forward Bending Test, and in cases where scoliosis is suspected, a second screening using either the Forward Bending examination or a scoliometer reading is recommended before referral to a co-operating medical team. It is convenient, and suitably accurate following brief training, for the first two tests to be conducted by the school’s nurse or physical education staff.Screening at schools allows for early diagnosis of scoliosis, allowing maximum benefit and prognosis to be obtained as a result of the subsequent non-operative treatment. Boston braces have presented the highest rates of compliance and have thus yielded some of the most beneficial results of management by bracing. A treatment is deemed successful if the progression of the curvature has been stopped, and this occurs with the majority of cases that are detected whilst they are in the early stages. The prognosis of scoliosis is therefore improved by conservative treatment measures. The cost of implementing a school screening program is justified by its ability to decrease the morbidity of those adolescents who are affected by this disease. The programs are generally inexpensive, are not time consuming and are simple to administer. As much as 75% to 95% of AIS cases that require surgery could have avoided operative management through early diagnosis and treatment. As the screening projects encourage and implement the early detection of scoliosis, which can then be effectively managed, there is great value in the implementation and maintenance of these school screening programs.

Abstract:
Emerging evidence supports an active approach for acute pediatric concussion management. The current practices of pediatric emergency providers following acute concussions has not been well studied. We prospectively enrolled 134 pediatric patients with an acute concussion. Providers completed a real-time survey to assess their recommendations for time off from school and sports. Seven to 10 days post-injury, patient compliance with provider recommendations was assessed. Forty-seven (35.1%) providers recommended moderate time off from school. In this cohort (n = 44), 14 (31.8%) patients took more than 2 days off from school. When minimal rest was prescribed (n = 80), 26 (32.5%) patients took more than 2 days off from school, P = .94. One third of our pediatric emergency providers are still recommending moderate time off from school. Regardless of physician prescriptions, patients took a similar amount of time off from school. Our study questions the influence of physician recommendations on management of acute pediatric concussions.

Abstract:
Context Athletic trainers (ATs) are educated and trained in appropriate exertional heat-stroke (EHS) management strategies, yet disparities may exist between intended and actual uses in clinical practice. Objective To examine the intended and actual uses of EHS management strategies among those who did and those who did not treat patients with suspected cases of EHS during the 2017 high school (HS) American football preseason. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Online questionnaire. Patients or Other Participants A total of 1016 ATs who oversaw patient care during the 2017 HS American football preseason. Main Outcome Measure(s) Responding HS ATs recorded whether they had or had not managed patients with suspected EHS events during the 2017 HS American football preseason. Those who had managed patients with suspected cases of EHS reported the management strategies used; those who had not managed such patients described their intended management strategies. For each management strategy, z tests compared the proportions of actual use among ATs who managed patients with suspected EHS with the proportions of intended use among ATs who did not manage such patients. Results Overall, 124 (12.2%) ATs treated patients with suspected EHS cases during the 2017 HS American football preseason. Generally, the proportions of intended use of management strategies among ATs who did not treat patients with suspected EHS were higher than the actual use of those strategies among ATs who did. For example, ATs who did treat patients with suspected EHS were more likely than those who did not treat such patients to intend to take rectal temperature (19.6% versus 3.2%, P < .001) and immerse the athlete in ice water (90.1% versus 51.6%, P < .001). Conclusions Inconsistencies occurred between intended and actual use of EHS management strategies. The standard of care for managing patients with suspected cases of EHS was not consistently used in clinical practice, although ATs who did not treat EHS stated they intended to use these management strategies more frequently. Future researchers should identify factors that preclude ATs from using the standard of care when treating patients with suspected cases of EHS.

LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English. From the viewpoint of marketing, schools open sports facilities to the public is the same as the service industry. It is a significant index and challenge in successful management if the service quality satisfies customers. In this articles, base on a standardized service quality performance matrix which proposed by Hung et al., the satisfaction index(Ix) and expectation index (Iy) were used to build a service quality performance matrix with 16 quality zone. The managers can use service quality performance matrix to improve service quality. The satisfaction index and expectation index of the service items must be located in the service quality performance matrix Bij. Thus, the managers can measure the quality performance value r and draw up a tactic to improve service quality.

Abstract:
Background: Little existing data describe which medical professionals and which medical studies are used to assess sport-related concussions in high school athletes. Purpose: To describe the medical providers and medical studies used when assessing sport-related concussions. To determine the effects of medical provider type on timing of return to play, frequency of imaging, and frequency of neuropsychological testing. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Methods: All concussions recorded by the High School Reporting Information Online (HS RIO) injury surveillance system during the 2009 to 2010 academic year were included. χ2 analyses were conducted for categorical variables. Fisher exact test was used for nonparametric data. Logistic regression analyses were used when adjusting for potential confounders. Statistical significance was considered for P < .05. Results: The HS RIO recorded 1056 sport-related concussions, representing 14.6% of all injuries. Most (94.4%) concussions were assessed by athletic trainers (ATs), 58.8% by a primary care physician. Few concussions were managed by specialists. The assessment of 21.2% included computed tomography. Computerized neuropsychological testing was used for 41.2%. For 50.1%, a physician decided when to return the athlete to play; for 46.2%, the decision was made by an AT. After adjusting for potential confounders, no associations between timing of return to play and the type of provider (physician vs AT) deciding to return the athlete to play were found. Conclusion: Concussions account for nearly 15% of all sport-related injuries in high school athletes. The timing of return to play after a sport-related concussion is similar regardless of whether the decision to return the athlete to play is made by a physician or an AT. When a medical doctor is involved, most concussions are assessed by primary care physicians as opposed to subspecialists. Computed tomography is obtained during the assessment of 1 of every 5 concussions occurring in high school athletes.

Abstract:
Context A growing number of high-school–aged athletes participate on club sport teams. Some, but not all, state concussion laws apply to both interscholastic and private sport organizations. However, concussion education, management plans, and knowledge have not been examined in club coaches who coach high school-aged athletes. Objective To determine if differences in concussion education, management plans, and knowledge exist between high school coaches and coaches of club sport teams. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Online survey. Patients or Other Participants A total of 769 coaches (497 high school coaches, 272 club coaches coaching high school-aged athletes; 266 women [34.6%], 503 men [65.4%]) completed an anonymous online questionnaire. Main Outcome Measure(s) The questionnaire consisted of demographic and team information, requirements for concussion-education and -management plans, and concussion knowledge. Results High school coaches were more likely than club coaches to report that their organizing bodies or leagues required them to receive concussion-education information (97.4% versus 80.4%; P < .001) and that their organizing bodies or leagues had a concussion-management plan (94.0% versus 70.2%; P < .001). High school coaches were more likely than club coaches to correctly agree that most concussions resolve in 7 to 10 days (48.6% versus 40.1%; P = .02) and disagree that loss of consciousness is required to diagnose a concussion (87.1% versus 80.9%; P = .02). Conclusions Club coaches were less likely to be aware of requirements for concussion-education and -management plans from their parent organizations and scored lower on specific concussion-knowledge questions than high school coaches despite the same education requirements across groups under their state concussion laws. These results raise concerns regarding the proper management of concussions in club sports and suggest a need for greater oversight and enforcement of state laws in the club sport setting.

Abstract:
In 2015, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health conducted focus groups with school nurses (SNs) and athletic trainers (ATs) from Massachusetts middle and high schools to assess implementation of legislated regulations relative to the management of students’ head injuries incurred during extracurricular sports. Four tape-recorded focus groups were conducted by experienced facilitators. Lists of themes were synthesized by investigators for each focus group. Participating SNs and ATs supported the sports concussion legislation, felt that implementation had gone well, indicated that the law empowered them in managing return-to-school/play for students with concussion, and experienced support from their school administrators. Some SNs reported that they had applied relevant procedures to all students with head injuries, regardless of how or where the injury occurred. Challenges identified included protocols for away games, inconsistent concussion care by physicians, and a need for teacher education. Further research is required to quantify these findings.

Abstract:
This study aimed at exploring emotional intelligence levels and time management skills of students of school of physical education and sports (SPES) and assessing their emotional intelligence levels and time management skills in terms of some variables. 309 students who studied at SPES of Erciyes University during the 2017-2018 academic year participated in the study that was designed in screening model. In order to determine participant students’ emotional intelligence levels and time management skills; “Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale”—Turkish adaptation of which was performed by Tatar, Tok, & Saltukoglu (2011) and Time Management Inventory—Turkish adaptation of which was performed by Alay & Kocak (2002) were used as data collection tools. In the study; Mann-Whitney U Test and Independent-Samples T Test were employed for paired comparisons while One Way Anova and Kruskal Wallis Test were used for multiple comparisons. For measurement of correlations, Pearson Correlation Analysis technique was used. According to study results, emotional intelligence levels and time management skills of students of school of physical education and sports were at “moderate level”. Students’ emotional intelligence levels differed significantly in terms of sex, academic grades and academic departments but not in terms of type of high school, sportive branch and age. Students’ time management skills did not change considerably in terms of age, sex, sportive branch, type of high school, academic grades and academic departments. Moreover, a positive and significant correlation existed between students’ emotional intelligence levels and time management skills.

Abstract:
Context: All 50 states and the District of Columbia have enacted laws governing concussion management and education. These concussion laws, featuring common tenets regarding removal from play, return to play, and concussion education, have shaped school and district policies. Objective: To evaluate the strategies commonly used to implement concussion laws at the school and district levels, as reported by certified athletic trainers (ATs). Design: Qualitative study. Setting: High schools. Patients or Other Participants: We interviewed 64 ATs from high schools (1 per school) participating in High School Reporting Information Online. Data Collection and Analysis: Interviews were conducted with participants between April and October 2015 regarding implementation of the 3 core tenets of concussion laws. Research team members independently evaluated the interview transcripts and field notes to identify common themes in implementation strategies. Results: Of the 64 schools represented, 90.6% were public schools, 89.1% sponsored more than 15 sports, and all schools employed at least 1 AT and had a written concussion policy. Four commonly used strategies to implement removal from play were reliance on coaches, immediate response, referral and guidance after injury, and notification of key individuals. Use of assessment or baseline tests, communication among parties involved, reliance on AT assessments, and return-to-learn policies were 4 frequent strategies to implement return to play. Finally, 3 major implementation strategies to effectuate concussion education were use of existing educational tools, timing of education, and concussion training for school professionals. Conclusions: Although concussion laws were passed at different times and varied in content across states, common themes in implementation strategies emerged across jurisdictions. The identification of strategic approaches to implementation will help ensure proper concussion management and education, reducing negative health outcomes among youths with concussions.
