Abstract:
Studies of the effects of students playing sports in high school vary but results are mostly positive. This qualitative case study examined the perceptions of 15 teachers at a small rural Iowa high school to assess how they viewed the effects of sports participation on student athletes in the classroom and why the setting experienced a decline in participation numbers. The framework that drove this study was based on Pajares's concept that teacher expectations may influence students and their academic performance and behaviors. The data included individual interviews from 15 teachers and teacher/coaches who had a minimum of 5 years teaching experience and had student athletes in their classrooms. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed for emergent themes. Findings revealed that increased academic performance, learned leadership traits, and teamwork were the perceived benefits to sports participation. Missed class time and stressful time requirements on student athletes were the perceived detriments. Findings also indicated that a need for more cohesiveness better and communication between teachers and teacher/coaches, and a need for higher eligibility standards for student athletes to participate in athletics. These findings were used to develop a policy recommendation project that will update and overhaul the district's current athletic eligibility policy. This project will enable more students to participate in athletics and remain eligible for sports participation and additional tutoring. Social change could result from increased participation in athletics, improved academic performance, and greater cohesion among teachers at the school.

Abstract:
Abstract The study aims to clarify female teachers knowledge and experience of working in a male dominated profession as a school sports teacher. The study will answer the following questions. Why have the teachers chosen to work as a school sports teacher? How do the teachers get affected by the fact that there are few female colleagues in the subject of school sports? How do the teachers get affected by working in an environment with an overrepresentation of men? Method Eight female school sports teachers were hand-picked with certain criterias. With a qualitative focus, this study used semi-structured interviews in order to reach a deeper understanding of the knowledge and experience of working in the subject of school sports. Historian Yvonne Hirdmans gender system and stereotypes model was used to investigate what happens when women enter the male dominated profession as school sports teacher. Results The results of the study showed that the teachers work with school sports because of their interest in sports. The women are not affected by the fact that there are fewer female than male teachers in the subject of school sports. They feel like a minority in club sports. The women highlight, the lack of interest in the profession among girls and correlates it to the existing jargon in club sports. The females are satisfied with their current working situation, but they get affected by working in a male dominated environment because they have to assert themselves. Also, some of the women believe that if they would have opposite sex, according to their knowledge and experience, they would work with sports, but they were not convinced that it would be in school sports and few of them believe that they probably would get offered other jobs in club sports, for example national head coach or club director. Conclusion The eight women chose to work in school sports because of their interest in sports. The women are not affected by the fact that there are few female teachers in the subject of school sports, but they feel like a minority during club sports.

Abstract:
Professionalism in sport and the standard of world-class performance is on the rise. The development of a country's sporting potential therefore is crucial (Martindale et al., 2007:187). In South African schools, sport is widely regarded as the basis of elite sport (Rajput & Van Deventer, 2010:159). Teacher-coaches are in most cases responsible for the development potential of this sport. These coaches are often not properly trained, while the most knowledgeable coaches are used at elite level (SASKOK 2011b:12). The aim of this study was to determine the current state of teacher-coaches’ sport-specific training and playing- and coaching experience regarding sport coaching. Fifty four (54) schools om the Kenneth Kaunda district in the North-West Province of South Africa were available for this study. Questionnaires by Vosloo (2007) and Camire (2012) were adapted for use in this study. One hundred and forty-four (144) questionnaires were used in the compilation of the results. The Epi-info program was used to capture the data. For analysing the data, frequency tables and cross-tabulations were used to obtain statistical (p≤0.05) and practical (Cramer’s V-value) significance. Only six (6) of the twelve (12) priority sports codes have a significant amount of sport-specific trained teacher-coaches. Most sport-specific training was completed more than five (5) years ago. In most sports codes the majority of teacher-coaches have less than 10 years’ combined coaching- and participation experience. The transfer of quality coaching knowledge between coaches is questionable. It is mostly teacher-coaches with less than 10 years’ experience that do not attempt to improve their coaching skills. Teacher-coaches in general also use few methods to improve their coaching skills. Sport-specific training is needed in all types of schools (especially township- and farm schools) and in all priority sports codes. These teacher-coaches also require quality coaching mentors as well as exceptional and current sport-specific information.
TheThesis (MSc (Sport Science))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Bastos, Ana Paula Pagliosa. "Legados do ensino do esporte na escola : um estudo sobre o que professores de educação física pensam em deixar para seus alunos ao final do ensino médio." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/36109.

Abstract:
This master dissertation has as central theme the legacy of teaching sports at school. The main goal is to understand how Physical Education teachers analyze their own sports trajectory and what links can be settled among these experiences and the sports ideas they want to transmit to their students at school. The study is supported by qualitative methodological assumptions. To answer the central question, it was used the narrative as a method and the episodical interview as a research instrument. It was interviewed twelve Physical Education teachers who concluded the undergraduate course from 1999 to 2009. They work in high school level at public state schools in Porto Alegre. The theoretical references were organized in three chapters: Sport in/of school: for a turn of perspective in Brazilian Physical Education; Academic-professional knowledge about sportS of Physical Education teachers; Experience-based knowledge: a marker of teaching knowledge. The discussions served to understand how sports became part of their lives and shaped their ideas about this matter of Physical Education at school and which effects has been produced by this legacy in their own teaching practice. Four big axes have defined the initial configuration for building analytical points: sport experiences before the undergraduate course; sport experiences during the undergraduate course; sport experiences during teaching practice at school; sport ideas the teachers want to give to the students at the end of high school. From these axis, the following analytical points were constructed: a) Sport at school: between the performance and “the sunbathing at prison”; b) “Outsourcing” as an answer for the conceptual vacuum in Physical Education classes at school; c) The concept of theory about sport and the hypertrophy of know-how in graduation course; d) Uniduni- tê: organization of sport as a matter in Physical Education classes; d) Sport ideas at school which were took to the life. The form as I organized the investigation and from the analysis I checked that conceptions of health, values, critical knowledge and “knowing practice” represent the legacy of sport that teachers want their students take for life. However, I found that this legacy isn‟t palpable or visible in the reports of teachers‟ lives. That legacy is “on the minds” of teachers.

The research objective was to analyze the professional intervention possibilities by means of the subject sports in Physical Education classes, shedding lights to its educational value and its possible understanding while multicultural phenomena. The methodological option is characterized as a qualitative approach (THOMAS; NELSON; SILVERMAN, 2007. The design was supported by a unique case study (GIL, 2009; YIN, 2005). The central question of the research which we seek answer was: How the teacher‟s intervention process happens, by means of the subject sports in the Physical Education classes taking into consideration its educational value, its understanding while multicultural phenomena and its manifestations in the society? The theoretical basis was enriched by studies related to the considerations about: the sports manifestations, the spectacular sport in school by means of communication, theoretical presuppositions and subsidies about the sport in the Physical Education classes, the teaching of physical Education from pedagogical approaches, and the debate about the theoretical presuppositions departing from sports pedagogy. The research involved the context of pedagogical practice of nine (9) of Physical Education teachers, two (02) State Public Schools from Guarapuava – PR (A, B), its practice was developed in classes of 8º e 9º grades from fundamental level, in which one hundred (117) students were involved in the total amount of schools from the two school institutions that participated in the research. The instruments used in the research to collect data were the non participants and systematic observation of the classes and the application of a questionnaire to the teachers and students. The Subject Analyzes was the option taken to analyze and interpret the data (BARDIN, 1977). The discussion and analyzes developed by means of observations, shed lights to the conceptual dimension, related to procedures and attitudes the contents which appeared in an isolated way in some classes, in this sense, being the sport appropriated by students in a fragmented way and without links with a valued conception that could add values and recognize the relevance of many manifestations of sport. On the other hand, it was possible to notice the concern of teacher in the attempt to offer and give chance to the students the systematic knowledge about the sport from a didactic perspective which prizes diverse methodological phases to the debate, experimentation, living, transformation and reflection of the issues efectivated on pedagogical work. Related to answers of the teachers and students questionnaires, it was concluded that it is necessary a large debates and discussions from the conception the such conception, because although of this research has focused to analyses of how the teachers intervention happens by means of the subject sport in Physical Education classes, many aspects related to the day by day in the classes, to the students knowing about sport and about the teachers pedagogical work it is necessary to develop deeper insights from a reflexive perspective.

Agdeppa, Kortney R. "Identifying the Physical Education Beliefs of Classroom Teachers." Scholarly Commons, 2017. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/312.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to identify the beliefs that classroom teachers have toward physical education. In recent years, the educational climate has prioritized academic achievement and standardized testing, thus diminishing the role of content areas such as physical education (Sallis, Mckenzie, Beets, Beighle, Erwin, & Lee, 2013). Classroom teachers are now more likely to assume the responsibility for providing physical education programming (Erwin, Beighle, Morgan, & Noland, 2011). Therefore, it is important to better understand the educational beliefs classroom teachers possess and investigate their personal experience within the physical education environment. To identify the beliefs of classroom teachers, this study used convenience, snowball, and purposive sampling techniques which were employed to secure voluntary participants. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. When all data was collected the researcher then transcribed, open-coded, analyzed, and synthesized the data. During the data analysis process the researcher looked to discover common themes between the participants’ teaching experiences and beliefs towards physical education by using an inductive analysis approach. The results emerged with themes related to mandating physical education, previous physical education knowledge, personal experience in physical education and acquiring appreciation for physical education. The resulting discussion provided support that physical education has many benefits, including the improvement of physical, mental, and emotional health, as well as improvement in academic achievement.

Abstract:
Sport is deemed by many researchers and practitioners as a favourable context to foster positive youth development (PYD), including the acquisition of life skills (Petitpas et al., 2005). However, researchers have cautioned for vigilance before assuming with assurance that sport leads to positive developmental outcomes (Coakley, 2011). Consequently, it is important to understand how sport leaders can facilitate the development and transfer of life skills. In the context of high school sport in Canada, teacher-coaches are considered essential adults in the delivery of school sport programs. Using Pierce et al.’s (2017) life skills transfer model, the present thesis explored the contextual and psychological factors influencing the development and transfer of life skills. An intervention was designed, using action research principles, with two high school teacher-coaches. Data were collected via teacher-coach pre- and post-intervention interviews, as well as student-athlete post-intervention interviews (i.e., five student-athletes per teacher-coach). Further, data were gathered through observation, and audio recording of each life skill implementation, as well as a researcher reflective journal. The results indicated that teacher-coaches played an important role in influencing contextual and psychological factors, in both the learning and the transfer context, which shaped student-athletes’ life skills development and transfer. The study has practical implications for coach education programs, suggesting the benefits of on the ground support to provide coaches and teacher-coaches with the necessary tools to promote PYD.

Abstract:
104
What every track and field athlete seeks in the stadium is nothing more than gaining an extra few split seconds of speed, or extra meters or centimeters in distance in throwing or jumping events. However, athletes mostly don’t have a steady salary and end up facing work-life issues. Using a narrative inquiry approach, this thesis, from a pole-vaulter’s perspective, focused on how a track and field athlete, who worked as a substitute teacher for 10 years, passed a teacher recruitment exam for elementary school and became a certified PE teacher. The research results are as follows: First, through reflective progress of narrative, the narrator is able to further understand the relationship between sports and life and find the significance of the role sports play in life. Next, with the abilities the narrator acquired when playing sports before, she keeps practicing pole-vaulting so as to let herself gain a foothold in teaching career after walking away from the role of a pole-vaulter and entering a career in education after graduating university. Last, the narrator thinks that as long as the goal is clear and specific, there is nothing to fear. She will pursue her dream fearlessly.

Abstract:
107
This research aims to study the discrepancy between the content of sex education in the Health and Physical Education textbooks in junior high school and the teachers’ perceptions of students’ needs for sex education. In the study, the researcher used six main concepts and thirty-eight topics about sex education in National Guidelines Task Force (2004) as the base of the content analysis of the abovementioned textbooks and the frequency of occurrence of the certain topics in them. In terms of students’ needs, the researcher created an interview outline and conducted in-depth interviews with five health and physical education teachers in Taipei to organize and analyze teachers’ perceptions of students’ needs for sex education. Then, the researcher compared the content analysis of the textbooks with the results of the teacher interviews and explored the differences between them, finally providing suggestions on how to revise the content of sex education in the textbooks. The important findings are presented as below. First, the breadth of sex education in the textbooks is satisfying, but the depth is not. Second, some content is not easily taught to students. Third, the textbooks emphasize the cognitive domain but understate the affective and psychomotor domains. Fourth, the textbooks contain several traditional ideas. Co- Advisor: Hsu, I-Hsiung, Ph.D. Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the participating behavior of recreational sports for high school teachers in Taiwan, comprising the recreational motivation, the recreational constraints and the recreational benefits. It concluded with a feasible concept of recreational sports. To test the importance of body image on personal health-evaluation, the research proposed that body image was an interfacial variable of recreational sports and personal health-evaluation. Recreational sports and body image could explain and predict personal health-evaluation. The research participants were the Taiwan high school teachers, there were 1001 valid samples. The data was analysed by t test, MANOVA, regression analysis and LISREL to test the assumptions. The main findings were as follows: Ⅰ. Being supported by the active recycle model of recreational sports, there is a causal relation among the recreational motivation, the recreational constraint and recreational benefits. Ⅱ. There was positive impact for body image on recreational sports, mainly caused by the interaction among recreational motivation, recreational benefits and body image. Ⅲ. The main influence of personal health-evaluation of the process of recreational sports was the self-growth, personal factor, the appearance evaluation and appearance orientation. Ⅳ. The appearance orientation and the satisfaction of body part were the two main variables influencing personal health-evaluation. Ⅴ. There was a cause-effect relation among the recreational sports, body image and self-health evaluation. The recreational process could directly put impacts on self-health evaluation, and indirectly through body image. The indirect effect weighed higher than the direct one. Exercise is the main content of recreational activity; it also fulfills and accomplishes the recreational life of teachers. The results of this study could provide valuable information on teacher’s involvement of recreational activity, and hopefully inspire the attention of authority to promote teachers’ active recreational life.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Swedish school sports system, a system which has evolved since the beginning of the 1970s, the prevalence of which has increased significantly at all school levels since the mid-1990s and today attracts a large number of pupils and teachers. Starting with the neoliberal discourse which has had a major impact on the development of the Swedish school system, and inspired by Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework, the reasons for the emergence of the school sports system and the reasons why schools chose to specialise in sport is described. Also examined are the pupils and teachers involved and the mechanics behind their participation. Empirically, this thesis is based on registry data, telephone interviews with principals at schools offering school sports and questionnaires responses from pupils and teachers involved in school sports. The results of the thesis suggest that the main reason school sports has become so common is closely connected to increased competition on the local school market; by offering school sports, schools have found a possible way to attract more pupils. Furthermore, the results show that the social characteristics of pupils who have been selected or have chosen to participate in school sports differs from the national population of pupils and participants in sports clubs. This suggests that the available supply of school sports is better adapted to some pupils’ social backgrounds and habitus. In relation to the teachers involved, the results show that other resources than what is normally required to become a teacher is valued in school sports. Instead of a teacher certificate, a coaching education and experiences in competitive sport is valued highly which suggests that this is recognised as symbolic capital for teachers in school sports. In conclusion this thesis demonstrates that school sports is influenced by both the fields of education and sport, and that the increased supply of school sports has implications for both fields.
Forskningslinjen Utbildning

104
In recent years , Taiwan's economic underperformance, widening wealth gap. The case of income inequality, relatively stable income for the community teacher unfriendly. And under the decreasing birth rate and gradual descent of teachers’ status, the work environment teachers faced is becoming harsher with each passing day. Recreational sports are one of the important methods for teachers to relieve pressure. With a low engagement rate, recreational sports are not popular among teachers at present. Therefore, it is imperative to improve the willingness of teachers for participating in recreational sports. There are many factors that affect elementary school teachers to take part in recreational sports. This study reduces the factors to thirteen factors in five levels, including physical fitness, figures, pressures, interests, emotions, results, experience, companions, families, teams, facilities, fees, and time. A questionnaire survey of experts is also presented here. The respondents are senior elementary school teachers that ever promoted recreational sports and set up sports association. They are quite familiar with the current situation of teachers’ engagement in recreational sports. With DEMATEL, the author finds that core factors that influence teachers’ participation in recreational sports are “interests”, “results” and “experience”. Teachers’ interests in sports will be improved if schools could invest on their favorite recreational sports. Meanwhile, sport activities and friendly competitions could enable teachers to get good sport experience and to develop regular exercise habits. As a result, it would effectively improve the willingness of teachers to take part in recreational sports.

Random sampling questionnaires were issued to Taichung public junior high school teachers of 103 school year, from January 10 to January 31, 2015. A total of 420 valid questionnaires were collected, representing a valid recovery rate of 93.3%. Data analysis were based on SPSS for Windows 18.0 statistical software package, through descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-Test, ANOVA, Scheffe, and Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation. The results of the survey are as follows: A.The main group of junior high school teachers in Taichung City were male, aged 31-40, and 60.1% were married and have children. Ball games (e.g. basketball, table tennis, badminton, soccer, volleyball, tennis, bowling, golf, baseball and softball) and outdoor sports (e.g. jogging, playing the frisbee, flying kites, hiking, bicycle riding, playing paintball games, walking) were the most commonly chosen as recreational sport. “2~3” times a week, “31~60” minutes were the majority of the frequency in recreational sports participation,“schools” were the most chosen places and mainly partners were “alone or with friends”. B.The principal motivations for the respondents to participate in recreational sports was “to improve body health”, followed by “to obtain comfort and relaxation of the body”, “to improve self physical fitness”, “to get good mood”, and “to relieve anxiety and pressure.” From the results, we can understand that teachers hope to relieve pressure to make themselves stay in good health through recreational sports. C.The main factor that affected life satisfaction was “It is joyful for me to participate recreational sports”, followed by “I think my family is harmonious and happy”, “I get along with my friends”, “I am satisfied with the present life”, and “I have good living conditions.” Therefore, to arrange appropriate recreational sports after classes (school) can make people happy and furthermore, enhance life quality. D.Recreational sports participation motivation and life satisfaction among junior high school teachers in Taichung City showed a positive correlation. That meant, the higher the recreational sports participation motivation was, the higher the life satisfaction would be.
