Hinshaw, Gregory P. ""The best rural schools in the country" : Lee L. Driver and the consolidated schools of Randolph County, Indiana, 1907-1920." Virtual Press, 2008. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1389684.

Full text
Abstract:
The early twentieth century marked a period of intense efforts toward reform of the American educational system. Rural education was not excluded from these efforts. The most dramatic change in rural education during the period was the closure and consolidation of "ungraded," one-room schools into consolidated high schools. These efforts met with intense resistance, often with the fear that rural communities would be destroyed by such educational reforms. Scholars have written very little on this subject, and what they have written has viewed the reform efforts quite negatively. One Indiana county, Randolph County, was generally regarded as the model rural school system during the period. Lee L. Driver, the county superintendent of schools, led the consolidation efforts in Randolph County. In many ways a typical Indiana county superintendent, Driver helped to transform his county and eventually became regarded as one of the national experts in the rural school reform movement. As evidenced by the number of visitors to its schools and by the attention it received from both the popular press and the academic press, Randolph County was a national model for more than a decade. Consolidation's impact on minorities and women was uneven in this county. As other locations made similar progress, Randolph County's exceptionalism waned, though there is an enduring legacy both for Lee L. Driver and the county's system of schools in the present educational system of the area.<br>Department of Educational Leadership

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the adjustment of Greek remigrant students in Greek public schools after their families' return to Greece from the Federal Republic of Germany. Teacher and self-rating instruments were used, and achievement and language competence data were obtained. The sample consisted of 13- to 15-year-old junior high school students in northern Greece. The remigrant students were divided into two groups ("early return" and "late return"), based on the year of return to Greece. The control group consisted of all the local classmates of these students. Remigrant students (mainly late return) were found to experience difficulties mainly in the language/learning domain and less in the interpersonal and intrapersonal behavior domains.

Bean, Eric L. "Measuring Peer Effects in Primary Schools: Lessons Taken from Disadvantaged School Districts Across the Country." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/440.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a unique data set in which students have been assigned randomly to different classrooms throughout several disadvantaged school districts across the United States, I estimate how a student's peer group can affect their academic achievement. Both my data set and my empirical strategy allow me to overcome many of the well-documented difficulties associated with accurately measuring peer effects, though certain data limitations remain an inevitable part of the study. Under these constraints, I find evidence of small peer group effects within a specific proportion of the student population. Generally, however, my findings suggest that peer effects do not play a significant role in shaping educational outcomes. Personal ability is by far the most contributive factor to students' academic performance while the ability of their average classmate does not appear to matter at all, except in the case of very low ability students, where the effect is both small and negative.

Tongkaw, Aumnat. "Multi-perspective integration of ICT's into island schools in South-West Thailand." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2011. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/multiperspective-integration-of-icts-into-island-schools-in-southwest-thailand(62a9b1b1-7000-4dbd-9624-7cef012b82df).html.

Abstract:
The major part of the island school groups in South-West Thailand is comprised of remote areas, which are under development and lack facilities and basic needs. Most people on the islands are poor Thai gypsies living in temporary shelters or small boats. They have distinctively different origins, cultures and languages. Developing the infrastructures in this area is a low priority on the government's list. Only a marginal percentage of the budget is being spent in the development of gypsy people, especially on their education. This has in turn become a major hurdle for the acceptance and implementation of the new Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in the island school's group sector. The schools generally have an inappropriate infrastructure, inadequate teachers and huge limitations in education resources. ICT implementation has been carried out by the Ministry Of Education (MOE) to assist in teaching, learning and school administration. In examining the ways in which ICT integration has been administered and used in island schools, the study investigated the roles of two different levels of the educational system: 1) The Satun Education Service Area (Satun ESA), located on the mainland; and 2) an island school group, located in the Andaman sea. The Linstone's Multiple Perspectives Model provided a framework for data collection and the organisation of results in a qualitative study. Data was collected by interviewing the Director of the Office of Satun Educational Service Area, the head teachers, teachers, parents and students in the island schools. Data from interviews, observations and documents was analysed using a template analysis approach (King, 2004). The findings of this study were interpreted in three dimensions: ICT benefits, ICT barriers and ICT sustainability. Sustainability is key to the effectiveness of a remote ICT project. Therefore, it is important to understand the concepts and categories associated with ICT project sustainability in rural areas. The categories of sustainability, including infrastructure, policies, politics, culture, management, human resources, co-operation and finance factors, need to be considered in the implementation of ICT projects in island schools or other projects in remote areas. The outcome of this study is a framework that clarifies the process of effective ICT implementation in the island context, which provides an additional valuable source of knowledge for local education policy makers in Thailand and other developing countries.

Kendall, Alexandra Clair. "Reading fictions : reading reader identities in Black Country further education communities." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2005. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3840/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis ‘opens up’ an exploration of the relationship between identity and achievement in reading, taking as its focus a case study of 16 – 19 year olds studying at Black Country further education colleges. As a group Black Country young people are often characterised through quantitative measurement, league tables and inspection reports, as underachieving in ‘schooled’ literacy. Drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives from Bourdieu, Bernstein and Foucault this project seeks to explore, problematize and challenge these representations offering a more dynamic account of young people’s engagement with textual experience that is grounded in young people’s own accounts of their experience of their out of school literacies. At the same I offer a critically reflexive account of the process of researching and representing research and attempt to achieve homology between the theoretical perspectives I put to use in my analysis and the practices of writing a PhD. I aim to present a reflexive piece of work that explores the situatedness of the PhD, and its authoring, as product and process.

Kaparou, Maria. "Instructional leadership in a cross-country comparative context : case studies in English and Greek high performing secondary schools." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2014. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/61913/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the application of the model of instructional leadership at high-performing secondary schools in England and Greece. This helped the researcher to develop a model of instructional leadership in a centralised context. A qualitative multiple case design allowed detailed data to be collected on four high performing secondary schools, using the interpretivist paradigm. The enquiry was conducted using mixed methods, including semi-structured interviews with various data sets (stakeholders) within and outside the school, observation of leadership practice and meetings, and scrutiny of relevant macro and micro policy documents. The three-layer comparative framework designed to identify the similarities and differences in leadership variables within and across the countries, shed light on the cross-case analysis of the case studies within a centralised (Greece) and a partially decentralised (England) education context. The empirical lessons from this study show that instructional leadership is implemented in different ways in diverse contexts. The findings from the two Greek case study schools are interwoven with the official multi-dimensional role of Greek headteachers, which leaves little space for undertaking instructional leadership dimensions. In the absence of such official instructional leadership 'actors', teachers' leadership has been expanding, and the research identifies aspects of informal collaborative leadership practices in Greece. In contrast, the decentralization of school activities creates the platform for the emergence of shared and distributed leadership within the English context, while various school actors have direct and indirect involvement in pedagogical leadership for school improvement. This cross-country comparative study provides new evidence about how instructional leadership is contextually bounded and inevitably influenced by the extent and nature of centralisation or decentralisation in the education system.

Abstract:
System development has been an innovational trend in the field of Information systems in both past and present time; and users of the system is one of the key success in the development life cycle of human and computer based systems. Information system is one of the most emerging technologies in developing countries; Nigeria as a case and the development of these IS is deployed in both private and public sectors of the economy for organizational data management. Due to some characteristics of developing countries such as poor communication facilities, unequal distribution of wealth, large population and so many others, many of these information system development has been carried out for the provision of services to both public and private organizations. But on the other hand, such projects have failed in one way or the other due to poor end user involvement in or during the development process. For this research, the involvement of users in developing country and more appropriate concepts which developers/designer could possibly use to involve users for a successful system were studied. The approach to this investigation was with the use of questionnaire which was distributed to the users of two different systems which were developed using different concepts of user involvement (Scenario-based user involvement technique and Interview-based user involvement technique). Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), was used for this quantitative analysis and the Independent t-test analysis was done to prove the significance between these systems. The findings from this study shows that in the developing countries such as Nigeria, these concepts of user involvement is also applicable and Interview-based user involvement technique seem to be the more appropriate method. Further research on the combination of these concepts/techniques for end user involvement should be considered or rather the creation of an advanced technique/concept for gathering end user needs and requirements for an excellent usable system in developing countries with respect to their limiting factors as mentioned in this thesis.

The present work analyzed the importance of a Technical School inserted in the rural area to attend to the needs of the community. The Technical School of Family Agriculture - Escola Técnica de Agricultura Familiar - ETAF - Pedro Pomar is located in the settlement Pirituba, area III, Água Azul Suburb, in Itaberá town, State of Sao Paulo. The school attends to the youths originating from the settlement Pirituba, areas I, IV and VI belonging to Itapeva town - State of Sao Paulo, and areas II, III and V situated in Itaberá town, as well as the farmers' children in these towns. ETAF is located in a predominantly family farming area, where is considered a family farmer whoever owns a real estate, who are called "lotistas" (one who owns an area of land), or lives in the settlements, named "settled". As family farming is understood that the works are exercised predominantly by the family, preserving the initiative, the domain and the control of the know how of the production, narrowing the relation between what is produced and what is consumed, maintaining a high rank of productive diversification, with products related to the market. Among those considered family farmers, the traditional family farmers and the families settled by programs of land reform are highlighted. The School is a partnership between the Paula Souza Center and the ITESP, and offers technical fitting for family farming. For achievement of the research questionnaires were applied to the freshmen students in July of 2004 - the inauguration of the School - and in February of 2005 and 2006, totaling up three groups. The research tried to outline the public and to discover the limits and the parameters. The questions for the freshmen students refer to the students and family's facts, features of the estate and security feed. New questionnaire was applied to those students, approximately two years after the graduation, with the same questions and others regarding the results that the study provided towards the present situation of the youth, the education in the ETAF and the consequences in the formed youth. The faculty also answered questionnaire of evaluation about the course, students, and the results expected by their own performance. During that period, besides the questionnaires, informal interview and participant observation were carried out as a complement to the facts and for helping in the argument of the obtained results. By the analysis of the facts it was established that ETAF brought benefits for the community, by attending the youth that would hardly continue the studies, due to the distance between their homes and the nearest Technical Schools. It was also observed that there were improvements in the structure of the estate, as in professional opportunities within or outside the area. It was perceived; however, some obstacles that need to be supplanted so that ETAF continues to attend with dignity the social actors of the field, in which it is an important part for the process of sustainable rural development<br>Doutorado<br>Planejamento e Desenvolvimento Rural Sustentável<br>Doutor em Engenharia Agrícola

Abstract:
Within this thesis, the dominant conceptualisations of the state/market and the national/global within international political economy are put into a critical scrutiny. It is emphasized that within most of the analyses of globalisation and the state, these conceptualisations are built in a dualist manner and that the internal relation between them is ignored. Within this context, it will be focused on three prominent approaches in contemporary international political economy literature, namely regulation approach, neo-Gramscian approach and open Marxism which scrutinise the relation between globalisation and the state. Through an analysis of the methodological and conceptual frameworks of regulation and neo-Gramscian approaches with a particular focus on the relationship they posit between globalisation and the state, the political/ economic and the national/ global conceptualisations of these approaches will be criticised for being dualist. Such a criticism will be developed by deriving insights from open Marxist perspective which provides a relational conception of the political/economic and the global/national and, through emphasizing that globalism is inherent in capitalism and capital is a global social relation which cannot be taken as separate from labour, perceives the state and market as internally related forms of capitalist social relations of production.

It is known that the Brazilian countryside shows a great diversity of people, such as people lives near river, family farmers, descendant of the black slaves, indigenous, among others. Therefore, it needs an education in/on the country seeking complete such diversity .So, the objective of this study consisted in characterize and analyze the education that has been offered in the country the city Jataí, situ-ated the Southwest Region of Goiás, strong mark expressive capitalist agriculture. The meth-odological procedures were survey bibliographies about the subject, application forms of semi-structured, analysis and consultation on official documents that guide to pedagogical work as the Pedagogical Political Project, guidance curriculum and textbooks. Recognizes there are some benefits existing on the rural schools today in the city, such as the provision of literacy and among others learning. However, Jataí is a city where there is a predominance of capitalist agriculture that stimulus a conception of life and work that give values capitalist production and the urban way of life, as a result, there is a hegemony this orientation in the conception applied to education practiced in the country city, offering one urban-selfish edu-cation and loss the rural, so this way tends to null a genuine education to the rural population.<br>A educação ofertada às populações que vivem no campo deve ocorrer de modo que as leve a valorizar seu modo de vida e compreender suas distintas realidades no vasto e heterogêneo campo brasileiro, para que tenham condições de valorizá-las e transformá-las a partir do seu lugar de vivência.

Abstract:
This research approached the closures of rural schools in Sergipe state from 2007 to 2015 and aimed to analyse the historical and social aspects that conducted this process. Our hypothesis is that there is an unequal dispute of development models that caused profound contradictions between the policies for rural development as a territory restricted to economic production and the Social Movements struggle for the construction of a new territory for life production in which education play a strategic role. In order to attain our objective, we sought to appropriate the historical and dialectical materialism method in order to elicit - in its own concreteness of this process - an analysis based on its totality in articulation with the singularity of the country development model with its contradictions, and the specificity encompassed in the closure of rural schools in Sergipe during period ranging. Our bibliographic study was accompanied by documentary research, statistical data from School Census (INEP) and interviews conducted by former municipal managers and leaders of peasant Social Movements in the state. Our results demonstrate evident withdrawal of the State’s role in relation to its offer with the closure of 404 rural schools, of which 296 were extinct and 108 were considered paralysed over the years in question. The closures were more evident in Sergipe’s High Sertão and Center South regions and the justification presented were: empty classrooms, lack of adequate structure at schools, pursuit for improvements in quality of education tied to the end of multigrades and a better financial management for municipal teachers’ payment. However, the peasant social movements’ analysis considers the closures as withdrawal of rights and as a way to empty the countryside. Our historical analysis enabled us to conjecture about this reality and to understand that economic policy on rural area are related to education policies and financing in it. In turn, they are guided by the overlapping of economic rationality over social demands of peasant population. Such comprehension enables us to assess that rural schools are territories in dispute and their closure is due to a policy that promotes the country as a territory restricted to economic production, opposed to the historical struggles for the construction of a counter-hegemonic peasant territory, where Rural Education is born and defended.<br>A presente pesquisa abordou o fechamento das escolas do campo no Estado de Sergipe entre os anos de 2007 a 2015 e objetivou analisar os aspectos históricos e sociais que conduzem este processo.

Delp, Cynthia Dawn. "Mount Rogers Combined School: The Experiences and Perspectives of Students and Staff When a Community School Closed." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/73217.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to document and examine the experiences and perspectives of students and staff who were affected by the closure of Mount Rogers Combined School in 2010. Mount Rogers Combined School was established in Grayson County, Virginia, by the concerted efforts of volunteers and community members who valued education and considered schooling a top priority for the area. The original four-room school was built of rocks and housed grades 1 through 11, taught by four teachers, one of whom also served as the principal (Grayson County School Board [GCSB], 1993). In 1990, it was the smallest school in the Commonwealth of Virginia (United States Department of Agriculture, 1990). A review of early education in Virginia and early education in Grayson County is documented to place the study in historical context. A brief history of Grayson County is also included in this paper. The qualitative case study documents the experiences and perspectives of the students and staff who went through the school's closure. Both primary and secondary sources were used to complete the study including interviews of students and staff who worked at or attended the school, reviews of official records and documents found in archives, examination of personal manuscripts, inspection of artifacts, and study of general histories. School divisions close and consolidate schools to improve instructional programs for students, offset student enrollment declines, provide adequate facilities for learning, and for economic savings. Communication, developing relationships, transportation, extracurricular activities and course offerings are variables that should be considered when planning a school closure. While transportation and changes in relationships are particular challenges, the overall benefits for former staff members include better access to more resources and professional development opportunities. Former students tend to adapt better than staff members when schools close due to more course offerings and access to a broader range of extracurricular activities. The findings are aligned with the literature that was reviewed for the study.<br>Ed. D.

Abstract:
The Fairfax County Public Schools and neighboring business/industry have perhaps one of the oldest and most satisfactory school/business partnerships in Virginia. A case study was made of the Fairfax County Public Schools School/Business Partnership to identify factors that make a partnership work and to provide information to assist a school system or business/industry interested in the establishment of a partnership. The population for this case study research was made up of school system and business/industry persons who had first-hand knowledge of the partnership. To begin the study a document search of the files and program was made. This document search resulted in a set of interview schedules which were then administered to the stakeholders. Data resulting from these schedules were coded and reported in narrative form. Results indicated that commitment from top level management from both the school system and business/industry to the partnership, a project of major proportion, and a program designed in a way to permit mutual pursuit of the goals of the partners are important if the partnership is to work.<br>Ed. Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between effective school characteristics and student achievement after the first year of implementing a school improvement project. The intent of this study was to analyze what occurred in terms of processes and products and to compare changes in school characteristics and student changes achievement in the treatment schools in the control schools. The study posed the following questions: 1. Was there a difference in the treatment group and in the control group in changes in effective school characteristics: environment, goals, leadership, expectations, time-on-task, monitoring student progress, and home/school relations? 2. Was the treatment group more successful than the control group based on student achievement of the basic skills? 3. What was the relationship between effective school characteristics and student achievement? The study encompassed the use of an experimental design and employed techniques of ethnographic studies. Each group, treatment and control, consisted of three schools that were matched on socio-economic status and on student achievement. Six principals, 150 teachers, and 2,228 students were involved in the study. The treatment consisted of leadership training on effective school characteristics, the development and implementation of a school-based improvement plan, and staff development. The Connecticut · School Effectiveness Questionnaire, the California Achievement Test, and observed behavior were used as measurement tools. Data collected on thirty-five variables were subjected to t-tests, correlations, and factor analysis. The results of the study appear to warrant the following conclusions: 1. The DeKalb County school-based model was successful in improving effective school characteristics in the treatment group. The treatment was highly related to each of the following effective school characteristics: environment, goals, leadership, expectations, time-on task, monitoring student progress, and home/school relations. This finding was verified by observed behavior. The control group did not show significant ii improvement in any of the seven effective school characteristics. 2. There was no significant relationship between the treatment and student achievement gains in mathematics and in reading when gains were disaggregated by individual students. 3. There was a significant relationship between achievement gains in reading and in mathematics in the treatment group when gains were aggregated. 4. There was a moderately significant relationship between mathematics gain and reading gain. 5. The treatment group was successful in improving the achievement of students in each quartile. The control group was successful scores of students in quartiles, but was not in improving the first, successful the achievement second, and third in improving the achievement of students in the fourth quartile. 6. There was no significant relationship between student achievement and each of the following characteristics: environment, goals, leadership, expectations, time-on task, monitoring student progress, and home/school relations. 7. The characteristics impacted the most during the first year of implementation were leadership, time-on-task, monitoring student progress, and goals. 8. The pretest characteristics that showed high relationships with each of the posttest characteristics iii were environment, expectations, and home/ school relations. 9. A high relationship was evidenced between pretest achievement and posttest achievement in mathematics and in reading. Reading achievement was also related to mathematics achievement. 10. When socio-economic status, sex, and grade were controlled, no significant relationship existed with any of the other thirty-two variables used in this study.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立暨南國際大學<br>教育政策與行政研究所<br>88<br>A study on the consolidation of small-scale elementary schools in Nantou country Shyan-Shuenn Chen Abstract The purpose of this study is to explore the consolidation of small-scale elementary schools in Nantou County. According to the research analysis of school scale, consolidation of small-scale schools, and indicators of school consolidation, the study endeavors to establish useful indicators of consolidation of small-scale elementary schools and ensures the weight of indicators to judge the schools’ data for consolidation by quantity method. Appropriate schools are presented based on the result of judgement, and the preferential order of school consolidation is regulated. Besides, the principals’ opinions about school consolidation are referenced. This study applies mainly to questionnaire method, to obtain and integrate the opinions of scholars and experts to determine the practical indicators. Relative weight is calculated by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The indicators constructed after the research consist of two categories: (A) school disadvantage indicators (negative), including 4 of second-level indicators and 10 of third-level indicators; (B) school demand indicators (positive), including 2 of second-level indicators and 4 of third-level indicators. In addition, the indicators and weight of school consolidation of whole can be lined up from the highest to the lowest: (1) the ratio of cross-generation breeding and single-parent family is on the high side (13.0%), (2) school located in remote, traffic inconvenience area (10.9%), (3) the ratio of weak and minor ethnic is on the high side (10.6%), (4) the distance between schools to be consolidated is too far (7.9%), (5) schools located in areas where mud slides flow (7.7%), (6) school age population in school district runs off seriously (6.8%), (7) the severe decline of student number in schools (6.6%), (8) the ratio of substitute teachers is on the high side (6.4%), (9) schools located in fault areas (5.6%), (10) the constant cost per student is on the high side (5.5%), (11) teachers’ turnover rate is on the high side (5.2%), (12) the total student number is on the low side (5.2%), (13) schools located in landslide areas (4.8%). (14) student-teacher ratio is on the low side (3.8%). Through the test of indictors of school consolidation, this study presents the plan as follows: 1. There are 5 elementary schools that should be consolidated immediately. 2. There are 17 elementary schools that should be consolidated in middle or long term plan. 3. There are 10 elementary schools that are not appropriate for consolidation, but need to enlarge the school scale. The author generalizes the opinions of principals toward the optimal management scale of schools and finds that the first four categories of optimal management scale in order are schools of 300 students, schools of 500 students, schools of 120 students, and schools of 600 students. These four categories are chosen by around 46.4% of respondents. In addition, up to 72.9% principals oppose consolidation of schools. Based on the result of study, the paper concludes by providing suggestions as references: 1. Suggestion for the Educational Administration Institution: (a) Establish complete criteria and regulation for evaluation of school consolidation. (b) For Shin Shan, Jiunn Keng, Yeong Her,Wen Tyan and Dah An elementary school, school consolidation should be implemented immediately. (c) Pay attention to the small-scale school, which was faced with the dilemma of whether or not to continue running. (d) Solve disadvantaged factors of small-scale schools. (e) The resistance to school consolidation can be solved from one stage to another, and resolution gives priority to school or class level. (f) Integrate the trial plan of partial consolidation of small-scale school. (g) Do not ignore the voices of anti-school consolidation, communication and coordination should be emphasized. 2. Suggestions for further research: (a) Concerning the regional characteristics and school types, useful indicators of school consolidation can be added or deleted. (b) Improve the method constructing the indicators of school consolidation. (c) Further research on regional or case study of school consolidation. (d) Explore the relative problems of small-scale school. (e) To match Nine Year Comprehensive Curriculum, we can research on the consolidation of small-scale junior high school and elementary school.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中正大學<br>教育研究所<br>92<br>This dissertation explores the position, effects and integrating methods of scholastic evaluation for the elementary schools at Tainan country. Furthermore, the suggestions are proposed for the associations and members of education. In order to achieve the proposed purpose, this research not only analyzes the literatures, theories and the current implementation of the scholastic evaluation at Tainan country, but also adopts questionnaire and interview approaches to obtain the empirical data. By using the proposed questionnaire of scholastic evaluation, the results of statistics, mean value and Chi-Squared detection are analyzed. The sample population includes 168 elementary schools. 789 questionnaires and 561 questionnaires are valid and the rate of valuable questionnaire is 71.1%. Moreover, the interview approach uses the suggested semi-constructed content to perform it. The interviewees include 2 educationists from the Local Education Authority, 2 school principals, 2 school department chairs, 1 school department menbers and 1 teacher. The conclusions are listed as follow: (1) Above 80% respondents recognize that the purpose of the scholastic evaluation is to find the drawbacks, to improve the teaching quality, to create new development and to take the duty for a school. And, the evaluation method can adopt the self-review evaluation. (2) For the issue of implementation, the current evaluation is overweighted in the external examinations. These evaluations run to the paper investigation and should be integrated. (3) For the issue of efficiency, educators recognize that the evaluation can perform self-inspection and gain the efficiency of business execution. In addition, the scholastic evaluation should be modified in the integration of categorical evaluations. (4) For the issue of method, the scholastic evaluations should be hold by executive department, members and schools. They will decide the methods, technology, period and the integration of results. Finally, an integration model for the current evaluation of elementary schools are suggested. It is expected that the proposed model can have some implication for the improvement of scholastic evaluation in the future.

The subjects of this study are principals from 74 PESYC. By implementing the strategy in Ref. , given 73 of valid questionnaires, resulting in 100% of available rate. The questionnaires are analyzed statistically using the methods of descriptive statistics and of -test. Build on these analyses, the results are concluded as following:1.Principals of PESYC have high agreement on the, in particular “Exerting leadership on lecturing” has the highest acceptance, followed by “Recognize advantages and disadvantages of their own teaching” and “Shaping teaching culture of co-learning among principal and teachers”.2.Principals of PESYC have high agreement on the “Contents of LS”, in particular “Involved in group meeting of specific field for co-lesson preparation” has the highest acceptance in “Strategies on co-lesson preparation”; “School provides observation documents for the benefit of professional feedback to proceed” has the highest acceptance in “Classroom observation”; “Classroom observers respond principal with their observation for discussion after LS” has the highest acceptance in “Briefing after classroom observation”.3.Principals of PESYC have high agreement on the “Opinions towards LS”, where “I believe that being involved in LS can fulfill the student-centered purpose of learning, understand the needs of students in practice and is benefit in improving the learning performance of students” has the highest acceptance.4.Principals have significant diversities on the opinions towards LS according to their age, background of teacher training, seniority of education service, seniority of holding a principal post and the scale of school. Meanwhile, there are significant diversities on the acceptance to the contents of LS according to their gender, age, background of teacher training, seniority of education service, seniority of holding a principal post, the scale of school and the location of school. There are also significant diversities on the acceptance to the opinions towards LS according to their education, background of teacher training, seniority of holding a principal post and the scale of school.5.Principals of PESYC believe that the dilemma they encounter is “Without a practical teaching class, and is therefore difficult to control the teaching progress and students’ initial behavior”. While the dilemma of schools is “Unspecified feedback mechanism of LS Trilogy, conducting only one LS per semester, which makes it becoming merely a formality”. And the dilemma of administrations of education is “Difficult to judge the relationships among principal LS, progress of teachers’ profession and students’ learning performance”.6.Principals of PESYC believe that the solving strategies are “Facing the LS-related issues” While the solving strategy of schools is “Reducing the document sheets needed for LS”. And the solving strategy of administrations of education is “Examining suitable rules of LS as the reference of conducting LS”.This research provides possible suggestions to administrations of education, schools, principals and the following researchers. Instruments for this study include “the analytical and statistical table concerning content of teaching resources”, “the analytical and statistical table concerning reference linking websites” and “the outline for interviewing science teachers in elementary schools about the use of school websites and demands”. In the process of developing these three instruments, researcher invited two experts to assess the content validity and then researcher adopted K coefficient of agreement, Pearson’s product-moment correlation and overall reliability to examine the consistency between scorers. Analytical results showed that reliabilities are consistent with each other to a great extent. By analyzing the content of websites, researcher found that: (1) The number of providing “teaching resources” was 233. The number of providing “subject content resources” was 125 and most schools offered “plants”. The number of providing “teaching materials” was 108 and most schools offered “worksheet”; (2) The number of providing “reference linking websites” was 488 and the total number of providing links was 1271. The number of providing “natural science—special areas” was 473 and most links are related to “animals”. The number of providing “natural science—comprehensive areas” was 138 and most links are related to “comprehensive sciences”. With regard to the “area of comprehensive subject”, the total number was 660 and most links are related to “teaching websites”. Results from interviews showed that science teachers thought that teaching resources and reference linking websites related to natural sciences in schools’ websites were not enough and related content should be supplemented. Finally, researcher made several suggestions to personnel responsible for maintaining websites of elementary schools, educational administration organizations, science teachers in elementary schools and research in the future for reference.

Abstract:
abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine compulsory schooling in the United States and its potential to provide an inconsistent avenue to employment for students from neighborhoods of differing socioeconomic status. Specifically, this study asked why do students from privileged neighborhoods typically end up in positions of ownership and management while those from impoverished urban or rural neighborhoods end up in working-class positions or involved in cycles of incarceration and poverty? This research involved the use of qualitative methods, including participant observation and interview, as well as photography, to take a look at a reputable private day school in the southwest. Data was collected over the span of eight weeks and was then analyzed and compared with preexisting data on the schooling experience of students from impoverished urban and rural neighborhoods, particularly data focused on juvenile detention centers. Results showed that compulsory schooling differs in ways that contribute to the preexisting hierarchical class structure. The research suggests that schooling can be detrimental to the future quality of life for students in impoverished neighborhoods, which questions a compulsory school system that exists within the current hierarchical class system.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>M.A. Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education 2011

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立暨南國際大學<br>教育政策與行政研究所<br>90<br>The main purposes of the research are to investigate the satisfaction and to offer suggestion toward the fifteen junior high schools’ overall reconstruction and campus allocation after the 921 Earthquake in Nantou County from a “user’s” viewpoint. Base on the Post-Occupancy Evaluation of campus construction, the objectives are to know the exact application after the reconstruction in each junior high school, to estimate satisfaction of each junior high school’s teachers as well as students after the reconstruction and to analyze if the newly-constructed campus meets the evolutional educational spirit so as to be used for reference to other schools and the Education Administration. Derived from my “Junior High Schools in Nantou County Reconstruction Application Questionnaire” is the variation in satisfaction of teachers and students toward the school’s five dimensions and general circumstance. In addition, “Campus Reconstruction Interview Record” of fifteen principals and “Campus Reconstruction Investigation Form” are used for comparison and contrast for further analysis and discussion. The research was based on fifteen junior high schools in Nantou County undergoing overall reconstruction─including one county high school which had been reorganized into a complete high school at the beginning of its reconstruction. Totally 565 copies of questionnaires were issued to the fifteen junior high schools’ teachers and students, with the principals included; 545 effective questionnaires were reclaimed. The reclamation rate is 96.5 percent. Furthermore, the fifteen principals’ interviews and each school’s reconstruction data were successfully collected for statistical analysis, induction and discussion. The followings are discoveries and conclusion. I. Discoveries from the questionnaires. 1. The variation in satisfaction to the schools’ overall reconstruction reached up to sixty-five percent. 2. The satisfaction to the schools’ five dimensions varied slightly. 3. General satisfaction differed with the school units in charge of the reconstruction. 4. General satisfaction differed with the location of the schools. 5. General satisfaction differed with the interviewers’ posts. 6. Satisfaction differed remarkably with schools. II. Variables that affected the satisfaction to campus reconstruction. 1. The school’s subjective conditions. 2. The amount of available resources. 3. The number of applicable buildings after the 921 Earthquake. 4. The duration of planning and designing. 5. Each school’s different concerns for the reconstruction plan. III. Reconstruction result analysis. Because of the overall design, there were achievements relating to dimensions such as general impression, buildings, campus, playground and other accessory facilities. However, there is still space for improvement on the five dimensions. Reconstruction results also showed deficiency in planning and designing. IV. The schools undergoing reconstruction can cope with the present needs. V. The reconstructed campus fits the spirit of evolutional educational ideas. From the theory, study result and analysis are derived the following suggestions. I. To junior high schools. 1. The planning of campus construction should be earlier. 2. The representatives of the planning committee could be more extensive. II. To the Education Administration in charge. 1. The calculation mode of total floor ground should be ascertained to prevent waste. 2. To set up reconstruction norms or not requires further study. III. To subsequent research. 1. Post-Occupancy Evaluation is better applied some time after the completion of reconstruction. 2. The relationship between construction cost and variations in satisfaction deserves further discussion.
