Abstract:
Matthias Schramm, a well-known historian of science and professor at the University of Tübingen from 1966 to 1996, died in Dusslingen near Tübingen on 24 January 2005, shortly before his 77th birthday. He was born on 6 February 1928 in Paris as a child of painters. Due to wartime difficulties, most of his education was acquired at home. In spite of this, he passed the examination of a high-school prior to his matriculation (Abitur). Although Schramm's school had a pure classical orientation (humanistisches Gymnasium), he read on his own initiative Euclid in Greek.

Abstract:
The source of the ore elements in the Schramm gold mine, localized in central part of Santa Catarina shield, has been constrained based on lead isotope composition of galena and sulfosalts, and the rare earth element (REE) patterns of the ore. The Pb207/ Pb206 model age obtained in galena and lillianite-gustavite series from the mineralization yields an age of 1.88 Ga. It is higher than the estimated age of the deposit (» 534 Ma). The Pb isotopic composition obtained in these minerals indicates that the age of Schramm mine source is similar to that of the galena of the Ribeirão da Prata mine (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag). This mine is located 25 Km southwest of the Schramm gold mine witch is hosted in the tension fracture zone conjugated with the first order shear zone that contains the Ribeirão da Prata deposit. The similarities between Pb-isotope compositions of both deposits could indicate that they were contemporaneous and derived from the same regional lead source. The REE patterns of the ore samples of Schramm mine are similar to that of the pyroxenites and banded iron formations from the Archean Santa Catarina Granulitic Complex that host the Schramm gold mine. They present low REE contents with flat patterns and lack Eu anomalies. The comparison among the isotopic data from this mine with those from other places indicates that the banded iron formation and mafic-ultramafic granulitic gneisses are the source of the gold mineralization. This evidence agreed with the hypothesis that the ore fluids were derived from retrogressive metamorphism reactions of Santa Catarina Granulitic Complex in the shear zones during the final stage of Brasiliano orogenic cycle.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the geometry of objects from 2-dimensional statistical physics in the continuum. Chapter 1 is an introduction to Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLE). SLEs are the canonical family of non-self-intersecting, conformally invariant random curves with a domain-Markov property. The family is indexed by a parameter, usually denoted by κ, which controls the regularity of the curve. We give the definition of the SLEκ process, and summarise the proofs of some of its properties. We give particular attention to the Rohde-Schramm theorem which, in broad terms, tells us that an SLEκ is a curve. In Chapter 2 we introduce the Gaussian free field (GFF), a conformally invariant random surface with a domain-Markov property. We explain how to couple the GFF and an SLEκ process, in particular how a GFF can be unzipped along a reverse SLEκ to produce another GFF. We also look at how the GFF is used to define Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surfaces, and how thick points of the GFF relate to the quantum gravity measure. Chapter 3 introduces a diffusion on LQG surfaces, the Liouville Brownian motion (LBM). The main goal of the chapter is to complete an estimate given by N. Berestycki, which gives an upper bound for the Hausdor dimension of times that a γ-LBM spends in α-thick points for γ, α ∈ [0, 2). We prove the corresponding, tight, lower bound. In Chapter 4 we give a new proof of the Rohde-Schramm theorem (which tells us that an SLEκ is a curve), which is valid for all values of κ except κ = 8. Our proof uses the coupling of the reverse SLEκ with the free boundary GFF to bound the derivative of the inverse of the Loewner flow close to the origin. Our knowledge of the structure of the GFF lets us find bounds which are tight enough to ensure continuity of the SLEκ trace.

Abstract:
Abstract Many papers have been published on cathodic protection of offshore platforms, but few references are made on the extent of protection of the well casings attached to the structures. F. W. Schremp reported tests in the Arabian Gulf which showed the galvanic anodes protected the wells to a depth of approximately 3200 ft (976 m) and that 300 A were required to completely protect bare well casings attached to a six-well platform in 40 ft (12 m) of water.1 Recent tests in deeper water (170 ft [52 m]) showed the structure galvanic anodes deliver approximately 8 A per well and protect the bare casing to approximately 3000 ft (915 m). An impressed current cathodic protection system with 600 A applied to anodes placed 400 ft (122 m) from the structure protected the structure and six bare well casings to 8000 ft (2440 m). A protection criterion of 0.1 mA/ft2 (1.1 mA/m2) in the lower cemented zone was proposed. Impressed current anodes placed closer than 400 ft (122 m) from the structure did not protect the wells to the required depth.

Abstract:
Current VTOL aircraft design processes require significant changes in computational methodologies resulting from innovations in distributed hybrid and electric propulsion technology. Electric VTOL (eVTOL) aircraft design offers radically different configurations by eliminating limitations in weight, size and location of Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and associated fuel systems. Hybrid Distributed Electric Propulsion (HDEP) solutions, to include eVTOL, allow designers to incorporate a greater number of smaller, lightweight propulsors throughout the airframe structure as necessary to meet complex mission requirements. Additional benefits of HDEP versus fossil fuel counterparts, include reduced acoustic and thermal signatures and lighter and smaller structures. Because of the many advantages of DEP, it is quickly becoming the preferred choice for autonomous aircraft design. This paper addresses the necessary changes to VTOL Synthesis to include DEP and Autonomy for HDEP aircraft. Two of the authors, Dr. Daniel P. Schrage and Mr. Kaydon Stanzione have substantial expertise and experience in VTOL aircraft design and the methodologies for vehicle synthesis. They will use this expertise and experience to identify and present the necessary changes in the VTOLTradeoff Environment (VTE) for HDEP VTOL aircraft design and assessment. The VTE will also be focused on using an Overall Evaluation Criterions (OEC) for the VTE that address value as a ratio of System Effectiveness to Life Cycle Cost (LCC). The third author, Dr. Apinut "Nate" Sirirovisuth, a research fellow in the Georgia Tech's Integrated Product Lifecycle Engineering (IPLE) Laboratory, and a Cost Research Analyst at PRICE Systems has significant experience in VTE modeling efforts and is an expert in affordability analysis for advanced aerospace systems.

Abstract:
Print-media needs of Hispanics in non-metropolitan areas of America are often overlooked. One newspaper editor in Idaho found Hispanics to be invisible in her small community and its newspaper, except in crime reports. So she began publishing the bilingual Idaho Unido. This study addresses the publisher’s business model and motivation for publication. It is based on two research streams: theories of the press from Siebert, Peterson, and Schramm in 1956 through McQuail in 2005 and cultural maintenance perspectives. The Idaho Unido story represents a revelatory case, demonstrating the power of a motivated individual to essentially subvert the dominant media paradigm by creating a successful, independent publication specifically intended to serve the information, entertainment and cultural-identity needs of a small, marginalized population living in widely distributed rural areas.

Abstract:
After a critical review of the existing theoretical interpretations of the role of the elements in the communicative chain, already explicit in the writings of Lasswell, Schramm and Merton, in the article is argued the introduction of the topos in the whole process of perception and interpretation of the media message. The specifics of the topos can enrich the perception of the media reality and can determine its further internalization in the minds and behavior of the individuals and the audience in general. There is a great difference when you are listening and understanding one and the same message if you are looking home TV monitor, or in a noisy pub among fans of the opposing team, or in an Arabic cafe, furiously chanting while bombing the Twin Towers in New York, or in the car with strangers hitchhikers, or lonely staying before he home computer. The study of the typology of these potential reactions will enable us to recognize more precisely and calculate the effectiveness of the media impact and reinforce its parameters.

Abstract:
Rojas Smith, Lucia, Megan L. Clayton, Carol Woodell, and Carol Mansfield. The Role of Patient Navigators in Improving Caregiver Management of Childhood Asthma. RTI Press, April 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.3768/rtipress.2017.rr.0030.1704.

Abstract:
Childhood asthma is a significant public health problem in the United States. Barriers to effective asthma management in children include the need for caregivers to identify and manage diverse environmental triggers and promote appropriate use of preventive asthma medications. Although health care providers may introduce asthma treatments and care plans, many providers lack the time and capacity to educate caregivers about asthma in an ongoing, sustained manner. To help address these complexities of asthma care, many providers and caregivers rely on patient navigators (defined as persons who provide patients with a particular set of services and who address barriers to care) (Dohan & Schrag, 2005). Despite growing interest in their value for chronic disease management, researchers and providers know little about how or what benefits patient navigators can provide to caregivers in managing asthma in children. To explore this issue, we conducted a mixed-method evaluation involving focus groups and a survey with caregivers of children with moderate-to-severe asthma who were enrolled in the Merck Childhood Asthma Network Initiative (MCAN). Findings suggest that patient navigators may support children’s asthma management by providing individualized treatment plans and hands-on practice, improving caregivers’ understanding of environmental triggers and their mitigation, and giving clear, accessible instructions for proper medication management. Study results may help to clarify and further develop the role of patient navigators for the effective management of asthma in children.

Engler, Joseph D., Mark Gorman, August S. Jackson, Paris Coleman, Marek Stanton, and Lincoln R. Best. Bees of the Pacific Northwest : key to species for Lasioglossum subgenera Lasioglossum and Leuchalictus (Hymenoptera : Halictidae). Oregon State University, 2025. https://doi.org/10.5399/osu/1183.

Full text
Abstract:
The following taxonomic key to the species of Lasioglossum Curtis, 1833 subgenera Lasioglossum and Leuchalictus Warncke, 1975 is adapted from McGinley (1986). This key is limited to those species known or expected to occur in Oregon based on McGinley (1986), and subsequent collection efforts in the Pacific Northwest by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Engler, et al 2018a-h; Engler and Stockenberg 2024a-g, Ikerd and Engler 2021) and the Master Melittologist Oregon Bee Atlas (Best et al 2021, 2022), as well as unpublished specimen records totaling 5,190 specimens. Additional species information was provided by Dr. Joel Gardner (Collections Manager, The M.T. James Entomological Collection, Washington State University, Pullman, WA). Prior to the species key, we provide an abbreviated key to enable the user to distinguish the subgenera covered in this guide from the other Lasioglossum subgenera in the region. This key is modified from the more complete subgeneric key provided by Gardner and Gibbs (2022). This key to species is intended for use by amateur and professional melittologists throughout the Pacific Northwest. The intent is to streamline the diagnosis of these species and provide updated figures to the salient characteristics required for identification. It amends McGinley’s 29 species north of the Mexican border to include the 15 species documented in the Pacific Northwest. One of those, L. leucozonium (Schrank, 1781), has not been documented in Oregon but is known from specimens in Washington (J. Gardner, pers comm). This species is not incorporated into the key, but is discussed in the footnotes underneath the related L. zonulus (Smith, 1848) with notes on differentiating the two species. This key does not replace the more detailed keys and species descriptions provided by McGinley (1986), therefore that publication should be consulted for additional information. Terminology follows the aforementioned keys as well as Michener (2007). The morphological characteristics used in the key are first and foremost from McGinley (1986), however physical specimens collected by the Master Melittologist Oregon Bee Atlas (Best et al 2021, 2022) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Engler, et al 2018a-h; Engler and Stockenberg 2024a-g, Ikerd and Engler 2021) were studied to assess which characters would be most beneficial to amateur melittologists and to produce images. Fourteen of the fifteen species were coI-mtDNA barcoded to support morphological species boundaries but not used for identification. Barcodes highlighted species-recognition issues and uncertainty within the Lasioglossum trizonatum (Cresson, 1874) species group, an issue broached initially by McGinley. At this time, no effort has been made to resolve the incongruities within the barcoded specimens. Refer to the footnotes for more information. This key is applicable for a broad geographic region, covering far northern California and all of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alaska. At the end of this document, species occurence maps are provided for 12 species in Oregon, using data collected through the Oregon Bee Atlas.
