Sheet metal industry is a traditional industry which is facing a manpower shortage problem. In order to enhance the competitiveness of the market, the quality of the product must have a considerable level. The G Company in Tainan is an architectural sheet metal processing plants, which main products are metal processing with the indigineously developed products. Although the company has been established more than ten years, it recently started to emphasize product quality. Since laser operation plays a key role in the product quality, and there is only one laser processing machine (AMADA FOM2RI3015) in the company, the study selecded the laser machine as the research object. By the experience, there are problems for the poor quality of laser, such as programming, condition setting and personnel operations. However, because no detailed data were recorded, it is difficult to understand the relationships between the defective rate and problems. Therefore, the purposes of the study are first, to furtherly examine the quality of laser processing operations and second, propose a plan for improving the quality. The research uses the Cause & Effects, or Fishbone Diagram, and 6M approach to analyze the processing quality of laser machine. The results show that the non-conformed products produced by the laser machine are caused by the following problems: 1. abrasion of lenses, 2. changes of processing conditions, 3. set-type of CNC program, 4. faulty operation process, 5. material composition, 6. errors of calling CNC program, 7. replacement of wrong laser nozzles, and 8. machine problem and so on. In order to solve these problems, the study presents recommendations to G Company: 1. implementation of education and training, 2. establishment of performance evaluation system, 3. earlier eplacement of consumables lenses, 4. requirements of the proof of materials from suppliers, and 5. establishment of the incoming inspection system.

The globalization trend has dropped because of the lower needing in domestic demand. Even the expected growth of GDP is not satisfactorily met, and those competitive pricing tactics from China, we still have stood our place on manufacturing and have seen the miraculous economic progress in past decades. Based on our long-tern experiences, knowledge, creativity and services, sheet metal manufacturing industry in Taiwan is still in a keen competition. Therefore, the key point is how to turn existing resources into new technology, and integrate high value added products to have the leading position. The study of metal sheet industry in the past mainly aimed to business plan management and operational performance. There were only a few studies about KSF (Key Successful Factors), which analysis based on the key factors of future industry trend in metal sheet industry, were still lack of data proof. With analysis from documents and operation model of individual case and the analysis from Dess and Rasheed, this study concludes four composes and twenty-two elements to build a hierarchical structure of KSF in metal sheet industry, and with AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process Theory) to design questionnaires for evaluation index in metal sheet industry, which is the object of this study, and use Microsoft Excel as the tool of analysis. Result of the study found that, the main factor of operational performance is organizational development; the second factor is the competitive situation. The value chain of products, design, manufacturing and marketing present the total value inside an enterprise, is the most critical operational strategy for person engaged in metal sheet industry. This study also made conclusion of KSF for metal sheet industry, there are eight main operation indexes which are on-time delivery, innovative R&D Competence, cultivating of talents, ability in international marketing, research cost, product quality, customer value creation and product differentiation. These will be the key business strategies for metal sheet manufacturing industry.

Due to the change of manufacturing environment by the trend towards lower birth rate and raising labor cost, the automated production seems to become a panacea for solving all kinds of problems in the industry. However, in the precision sheet metal industry with small-volume large-variety production which frequently switches production lines and customized products, whether the high cost of investment in automated-production equipment can meet manager’s expectation becomes the major concern in decision. The purpose of the research is to compare the efficiency of traditional manual sheet metal bending operations with the introduced automatic machine from the aspects of bending process, tolerance and the benefits. In order to realize if the introduction of automatic bending machine meets the management expectation, the research starts understanding the sheet metal bending process and calculating the tolerance generated. Then, the status qua of the automatic operations in the C Company is presented. Besides, the two types of bending productions are further evaluated based on the utilization rate, production efficiency and process stabilization. The results of the research show that the automatic equipment is better than the traditional either in machine utilization rate or product precision. However, the traditional equipment is superior in production efficiency. In general, the research concludes that the automatic production has brought some benefits to the C Company and recommendations are presented.
