Abstract:
In the last years, the development of sheet metal forming technologies shows many different tendencies such as materials or geometries. In the same duration the process planning for stamping processes keep still in the same way, although numerical algorithm and hardware improved continuously. That means, as components, processes and materials got more complex, the planning process still stays in the same technical evolution stage as years before. At present it is mostly a deterministic kind of planning. And in this way, potentials and possibilities still lie down. In the actual discussion around industry 4.0 new potentials around this topic seems to show new ways, but a lot of data and technologies are already available to improve production and forming processes. The task is to use this data. The key to improve the processes based on this data is the stochastic simulation, especially in the sheet metal forming industry [1,2]. The eberspaecher company as customer for sheet metal parts has an immense interest in high quality parts. High quality parts are an important step to reduce cost in the own following manufacturing. This paper deals with actions to integrate stochastic considerations into the planning process at eberspaecher. And its content should excite the discussion around robustness processes, stochastic simulation and in this way industry 4.0 as one base for future manufacturing.

Sheet metal industry is a traditional industry which is facing a manpower shortage problem. In order to enhance the competitiveness of the market, the quality of the product must have a considerable level. The G Company in Tainan is an architectural sheet metal processing plants, which main products are metal processing with the indigineously developed products. Although the company has been established more than ten years, it recently started to emphasize product quality. Since laser operation plays a key role in the product quality, and there is only one laser processing machine (AMADA FOM2RI3015) in the company, the study selecded the laser machine as the research object. By the experience, there are problems for the poor quality of laser, such as programming, condition setting and personnel operations. However, because no detailed data were recorded, it is difficult to understand the relationships between the defective rate and problems. Therefore, the purposes of the study are first, to furtherly examine the quality of laser processing operations and second, propose a plan for improving the quality. The research uses the Cause & Effects, or Fishbone Diagram, and 6M approach to analyze the processing quality of laser machine. The results show that the non-conformed products produced by the laser machine are caused by the following problems: 1. abrasion of lenses, 2. changes of processing conditions, 3. set-type of CNC program, 4. faulty operation process, 5. material composition, 6. errors of calling CNC  program, 7. replacement of wrong laser nozzles, and 8. machine problem and so on. In order to solve these problems, the study presents recommendations to G Company: 1. implementation of education and training, 2. establishment of performance evaluation system, 3. earlier eplacement of consumables lenses, 4. requirements of the proof of materials from suppliers, and 5. establishment of the incoming inspection system.

Abstract:
Sheet metal forming tools play an important role in the manufacturing of many products. With shorter product life cycles and demand for shorter time to market for new products, the process for design and manufacturing of stamping tools becomes a critical part. Stamping dies are often designed and manufactured by smaller, specialized companies. For a tooling company, knowledge and experience is an important competitive advantage. Traditionally the design process has been characterized by being based on few key individuals with much experience and craftsmanship. To stay competitive in this market there is a need for more efficient processes, systems, tools and supports in order to become more industrialized. This paper presents results from a study of the state of practice in industry within progressive stamping tool design as well as a review of relevant literature. The design and manufacturing processes for stamping dies in six companies have been investigated through semi-structured interviews, from which the main challenges in the current state for the companies are identified. The results from the interviews was analyzed and compared to the established concepts and frameworks of methods found in the literature review. The results and analysis points in the direction of efforts needed in supporting the formalization and reuse of information and knowledge from previous tool projects and production, especially during the critical steps of tool process planning and creating the tool layout.

Abstract:
In the design of new products, it is usual for different planners to specify different processing routes for the same part, which do not always incorporate the optimal solution to the problem. Computerization of process planning has evolved as a solution to speed up planning for new products. The essence of the chapter is to explore machine capabilities, parameters, and constrains inherent in sheet metal forming processes and then illustrate CAPP software design for process sequencing for new products to support standardisation of production routes. The verification of the designed CAPP system has realised significant savings of 40% reduction in process planning effort, 5% in material, 15% in scrap and 10% in tooling. In order to design the cloud-based CAPP system, data was gathered on the machinery capabilities for the sheet metal operations in a case study company that manufactures sheet metal accessories for the construction industry. A computer-based system was developed to store the machinery tool capabilities and their functional parameters and to facilitate sharing of information across the system modules. Autodesk Inventor® was used as the source of input for the CAD models into the system. Visual Basic.NET programming language was used to design a module for feature recognition (FR) to capture characteristics from a CAD model drawing of the new sheet metal product. A module was then developed to sequence the process operations for the CAD model based on the part features. The process sequencing system helps designers and process planners to link the new model design with the production path, the tools, and equipment required in order to improve their design and planning in the early stages of the product life cycle.

Abstract:
This passage, from Dad’s essay “Man’s Leisure Time,” seems to sum up why Dad had turned to bow-and-arrow making as a favorite hobby in the late 1920s. Archery became a family enterprise. Dad loved to hunt, and we all grew up participating in hunting and archery practice at or near the Shack as well as further afield. And it turned out that Mother particularly had an extraordinary talent and skill for tournament archery. My father was a skilled carpenter, and probably learned from his father, Carl Leopold, who was skilled with hand tools. Dad’s father was the president of the Leopold Desk Company of Burlington, Iowa, and all of Dad’s siblings became expert in woodworking. Dad started making bows and arrows in 1926, when someone gave him a bow stave of yew wood. In Madison he began to shape this stave, and later ones of Osage orange or yew, into beautiful bows. In the basement he kept his giant toolbox of carpenter tools, which he had transported from Albuquerque. We still have that great box and some of his tools—planes, squares, chisels, files, saws, and such. In the basement he also set up a German-style workbench, with a wood vise on the right side, a metal quick-release vise on the left, and a series of peg holes down the middle to hold a block in place for using a plane. Dad placed his giant staves of Osage orange or yew in the vice and shaped the bow with a sharp drawknife and a wood file. The midsection, where the grip was located, was carefully shaped and made oval to fit the hand securely. To gauge the symmetry of his sculpturing of the bow stave, he hung up a large sheet of brown paper on the wall and placed a hook high at the top, hung up the bow, and, with the bowstring attached to the sculptured bow tips, pulled the string downward so the bow bent, and so he could see if the curve of the drawn bow was evenly symmetrical.

Abstract:
Abstract. The industry demands an increasing individualization, which leads to a rising variety of sheet metal parts. The consequence for sheet metal manufacturers are larger amounts of product data, smaller batch sizes and a larger quantity of different parts per year. The challenge for an efficient company is the availability and use of the corporate product data. Classification is a suitable tool for organizing corporate product data sets. In order to better reflect the individualization of customer demands and the resulting flexible manufacturing processes in a classification system, a method is needed to adapt the classification system based on the frequently used feature list. In the context of this paper, features are defined and parts are classified that are manufactured with the technology of air bending. It is a contribution to the creation of more precise approaches to the sheet metal part classification with simultaneous validation by a measurable characteristic. Focus is placed on the validation of the system with empirical measurement data. This allows every company to optimize and validate their own classification system.

Abstract:
Processes are very important for the success within many business fields. They define the proper application of methods, technologies, tools, and company structures in order to reach business goals. Not only manufacturing processes have to be defined from the start point to their end, also other processes like product development processes need a proper description to gain success. For example in automotive industries complex product development processes are necessary and defined prior to product development. Over the last decades several product modeling languages have been developed moving to object oriented modeling languages, such as UML, but the used process modeling languages are still procedural. The paradigm shift caused by object oriented description within product modeling languages has to be transferred to process modeling languages. This paper describes an object oriented approach for process modeling, referred to as PML and its application to a complex product development and production process for integrated sheet metal design of higher order bifurcations. Using UML as a starting point an object oriented process modeling method is differentiated. The basic concepts which are needed for process modeling are put into an object oriented context and are explained. The paper gives an outlook, what can be achieved by the new approach.
