Abstract:
This article examines the photographs of Joachim Schumacher for their vision of a landscape haunted by the forgotten, the silenced and the increasingly invisible lives erased by the re-articulation of Germany’s Ruhr region. The article places Schumacher’s work in relationship to post-war German photography, both that which imagines the memories of World War II and the Holocaust, as well as the 1980s urban photographs of the Düsseldorf School photographers. Within this context, Schumacher’s photographs are understood for their location of place and history on the revitalized Ruhr landscape. In addition, the article considers the photographs in relationship to the New Topographics to demonstrate their simultaneous placelessness. In this international context, Schumacher’s photographs can be seen as indicative of a European placelessness that has emerged in the wake of the closure of mining and industry.

Y voy a intentarlo.

Abstract:
The Echinoderm fauna of the Brassfield Formation (Lower Silurian, Early to Middle Llandoverian) contains more than 30 species and is locally common in southern Ohio making it one of the most important Early Silurian faunas known (Foerste, 1919, 1936; Ausich, 1984a, 1984b, 1985, 1986a, 1986b, 1986c, 1987; Ausich and Schumacher, 1984; Ausich and Dravage, 1988). At present, the Brassfield Formation has produced two callocystitid rhombiferans including Brockocystis nodosarius Foerste (1919) and Anartiocystis foerstei Ausich and Schumacker (1984). Neither of these taxa is well-known, being described from a handful of moderately well to poorly preserved specimens each. The discovery of Anartiocystis whitei n. sp., the third callocystitid species known from the Brassfield Formation and second known species of the genus, greatly clarifies the morphology of the genus adding significant information on the plating of the ambulacra and stem.

We give the trade-off curve showing the capacity of a quantum channel as a function of the amount of entanglement used by the sender and receiver for transmitting information. The endpoints of this curve are given by the Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland capacity formula and the entanglement-assisted capacity, which is the maximum over all input density matrices of the quantum mutual information. The proof we give is based on the Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland formula, and also gives a new and simpler proof for the entanglement-assisted capacity formula.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Natural regeneration cannot be effectively evaluated by tree density because of spatial heterogeneity typically observed. A proper interpretation of natural regeneration will consider some evaluation of area stocked. However, stocking estimates for natural regeneration are plot-size-dependent. Stocking at the 1-milacre scale is not generally comparable to that on a 4-milacre scale unless a generalized relation with stand density can be established. A generalized relation was first suggested to hold in a paper by Lynch and Schumacher (1941), but this has not been confirmed in subsequent studies. The Lynch and Schumacher hypothesis of a generalized regeneration density-stocking relation across plot size was tested using observations on 60 stands. Results were consistent with Lynch and Schumacher (1941). With evidence of a well-defined relation for plots ranging from 1 to 10 milacres, it appears possible to approximate, for ponderosa pine and associated species, the natural regeneration stocking percentage for a range of stocking standards based solely on observations of regeneration density. Confidence intervals were derived for a range of stocking standards in English units from 1 to 10 milacre and for metric units from 0.0005 hectares to 0.0040 hectares.

AbstractAdjustment of volumetric models for clone of Eucalyptus grandis x E. Urophylla grown on agreste, Pernambuco. This research aimed to evaluate the volumetric models fitting for Eucalyptus clone using normal and t-Student distributions, based on data from an experiment implanted at the Agronomic Institute of Pernambuco (IPA) in São Bento do Una, PE. In order to set the modified volumetric models of Silva and Bailey, modified Chapman and Richard, Schumacher and Hall, and modified Brody, we used data from 62 trees rigorously scaled by Smalian method. The criteria for equation comparing were the weighted value (PV) between the corrected index adjustment (IAc) and absolute mean error percentage (EPAM). According to the results, the model that best fits for the two distributions is Schumacher and Hall, with better adjustment related to the Student-t distribution. The t-Student distribution promoted improvements of equations regarding the Normal distribution, compared to the two distributions per equation. Keywords: Forest management; symmetric distributions; volume equations.

AbstractNew operational tools for monitoring flash flooding based on radar quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) have become available to U.S. National Weather Service forecasters. Herman and Schumacher examined QPE exceedance thresholds for several tools and compared them to each other, to flash flood reports (FFRs), and to flash flood warnings. The Next Generation Radar network has been updated with dual-polarization capabilities since the publication of Herman and Schumacher, which has changed the characteristics of the derived QPEs. Updated thresholds on Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor version 12 products that are associated to FFRs are provided and thus can be used as guidance by the operational forecasting community and other end-users of the products.

Abstract:
Três modelos foram testados: (Husch) v = β0 × dapβ1 × εi; (Schumacher e Hall) v = β0 × dapβ1 × hβ2 × εi; (Schumacher e Hall modificado) v = β0 × dapβ1 × hβ2 × h100β3 × εi.

Abstract:
To transmit classical information using a quantum system, the sender prepares the system in one of a set of possible states and sends it to the receiver. The receiver then makes a measurement on the system to obtain information about the senders choice of state. The amount of information which is accessible to the receiver depends upon the encoding and the measurement. Here we derive a bound on this information which generalizes the bound derived by Schumacher, Westmoreland and Wootters [Schumacher, Westmoreland and Wootters, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 3452 (1996)] to include inefficient measurements, and thus all quantum operations. This also allows us to obtain a generalization of a bound derived by Hall [Hall, Phys. Rev. A 55, 100 (1997)], and to show that the average reduction in the von Neumann entropy which accompanies a measurement is concave in the initial state, for all quantum operations.
