Abstract:
‘Transactional learning’ at its simplest means learning from doing transactions. When professionals learn they often do so, as Donald Schön reminds us, by learning from within transactions – ‘knowing-in-action’. By this Schön means that professionals solve problems by constructing for themselves a repertoire of precedents, images and remembered actions. Problems are not solved by using rules alone, but are framed or constructed according to the repertoire. Professionals try out solutions for fit, re-frame, feed back to themselves, try out other solutions. The result is what Schön calls ‘;reflection-in-action’. According to him, this is what produces the doctor's “feel’ for a specific diagnosis, or a lawyer's ‘feel’ for a case, (Schon 1983).

ZusammenfassungStudien haben gezeigt, dass Glatiramerazetat bei der Behandlung von Patienten mit schubförmiger MS bezüglich der Schubprophylaxe gleich gut wirksam ist wie Interferon-beta-1b und -beta-1a. Dabei treten unter Glatiramerazetat signifikant oder tendenziell mehr neue T2-signalintensive Läsionen auf, deren klinische Bedeutung nicht zweifelsfrei beurteilt werden kann. Patienten der BENEFIT-Kohorte, die schon nach dem ersten Schub mit Interferon-beta-1b behandelt werden, sind nach fünfjähriger Behandlung nicht signifikant weniger schwer behindert als solche, die erst nach dem zweiten Schub oder zwei Jahre nach dem ersten Schub für fünf Jahre behandelt worden sind. Mit Fingolimod und Cladribin stehen erstmals orale Substanzen zur Behandlung der schubförmigen MS in der klinischen Prüfung. Beide Substanzen führen über unterschiedliche Mechanismen zu einer Lymphozytopenie im Blut. Cladribin und Fingolimod senken im Vergleich zu Placebo, Fingolimod auch im Vergleich zu Interferon-beta-1a die jährliche Schubrate signifikant. Dabei ist der Anteil schubfreier Patienten signifikant höher und die Zeit bis zum nächsten Schub signifikant verlängert.

Ein Aufenthalt im Hochgebirge führt bei nicht akklimatisierten Personen oft zu Symptomen der Höhenkrankheit wie Kopfschmerzen, Atemnot und verminderter Leistungsfähigkeit. Aber auch Übelkeit und Appetitlosigkeit sind häufige Symptome der akuten Bergkrankheit und können zu reduzierter Kalorienzufuhr und Gewichtsverlust führen. Über 4000 m sind 50–80% der Bergsteiger von Symptomen betroffen. Schon nach kurzer Höhenexposition können gastrointestinale Schleimhautläsionen auftreten, die zu Magen-Darm-Blutungen führen können und zu einem verminderten Hungergefühl beitragen. Patienten mit einer vorbestehenden chronisch-entzündlichen Darmerkrankung können einen akuten Schub erleiden. Ferner kommt es höhenbedingt zur Induktion zahlreicher Stoffwechselvorgänge u. a. auch der Eisenaufnahme. Während die Pathophysiologie der hypobaren Hypoxie für die Atmung und das Herz-Kreislauf-System schon länger gut dokumentiert ist, fasst der vorliegende Mini-Review die bisher bekannte Datenlage zur Magen-Darm-Funktion in der Höhe zusammen.

Abstract:
Mobile communication systems are undergoing significant development on increasingly wide frequency bands (5G in particular). To support this development, a detailed characterization of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in L, S and C band between a station (satellite, airborne or ground) and a mobile platform is necessary to analyze and model the phenomena that have a decisive impact on the performance, availability and operability of systems. The environments of interest are complex (urban environment for example) and include a wide range of different elements (buildings, pylons, trees etc.) that will have an impact on the signal received by a mobile in reception. These needs motivated the development of a simulator using an enhanced hybrid physicalstatistical model for Land Mobile Satellite (LMS) propagation Channel. This simulator has been developed by a PhD student and presented in [Ait+13]. This study has been conducted by the ONERA on behalf of the CNES. The Simplified CHannel for Urban Navigation (SCHUN) ensure a wideband characterization of the channel, with realistic multipath modelling and is dedicated to the testing of GNSS systems. However, this model must be validated in S and C bands and measurement campaigns have been carried out to compare simulated and experimental data. In this work, the data corresponding to a trajectory with alternatively LOS and NLOS situation in an urban canyon have been derived from a measurement campaign carried out in Saint-Lary in S and C frequency bands. The post-processing of the data performed in the S frequency band has been performed using a pre-existing algorithm implemented at ONERA relying upon acquisition and tracking signal processing principles of GNSS. This trajectory has been simulated along with its surroundings using SCHUN. The Channel Impulse Response has been computed to derive multipath characteristics. Comparisons have been made between simulations and experimental data and have shown great concordance. Future works would be first to extend this comparison to C-bands and then to statistically simulate a virtual city corresponding to the town in which the experiment has been carried out to complete the validation.
Mobila kommunikationssystem genomgår en betydande utveckling på allt bredare frekvensband (särskilt 5G). För att stödja denna utveckling krävs en detaljerad karakterisering av utbredningen av elektromagnetiska vågor i L-, S- och C-banden mellan en station (satellit, luftburen eller markbaserad) och en mobil plattform för att analysera och modellera de fenomen som har en avgörande inverkan på systemens prestanda, tillgänglighet och funktionsduglighet. De intressanta miljöerna är komplexa (t.ex. stadsmiljöer) och innehåller en mängd olika element (byggnader, master, träd osv.) som påverkar den signal som tas emot av en mobil i mottagning.  Dessa behov motiverade utvecklingen av en simulator som använder en förbättrad fysisk-statistisk hybridmodell för landmobila satellituppbredningskanaler (LMS). Denna simulator har utvecklats av en doktorand och presenteras i [Ait+13]. Denna studie har genomförts av ONERA på uppdrag av CNES. Simplified CHannel for Urban Navigation (SCHUN) säkerställer en bredbandig karakterisering av kanalen med realistisk multipath-modellering och är avsedd för testning av GNSS-system. Denna modell måste dock valideras i S- och C-banden och mätkampanjer har genomförts för att jämföra simulerade och experimentella data. I detta arbete har data som motsvarar en bana med alternativt LOS- och NLOS-situation i en urban canyon tagits fram från en mätkampanj som utfördes i Saint-Lary i S- och C-banden. Efterbearbetningen av data från S-frekvensbandet har utförts med hjälp av en befintlig algoritm som implementerats vid ONERA och som bygger på GNSS-signalbehandlingsprinciperna för förvärv och spårning. Denna bana har simulerats tillsammans med dess omgivningar med hjälp av SCHUN. Kanalimpulsresponsen har beräknats för att få fram egenskaperna för multipelväg. Jämförelser har gjorts mellan simuleringar och experimentella data och har visat stor överensstämmelse. Framtida arbeten skulle vara att först utvidga denna jämförelse till C-bandet och sedan statistiskt simulera en virtuell stad som motsvarar den stad där experimentet utfördes för att slutföra valideringen.

The Euler equations are solved on dynamic meshes using the ALE kinematic description. Thus, the mesh constitutes another field governed by pseudo-elatodynamic equations. The three fields are discretized using proper finite element formulations which satisfy the geometric conservation law. A matcher module is incorporated for the purpose of pairing the grids on the fluid-structure interface and for transferring the loads and displacements between the fluid and structure solvers. Two solutions strategies (Gauss Seidel and Schur-Complement) for solving the nonlinear aeroelastic system are discussed. Using second order time discretization schemes allows us to use large time steps in the computations. The numerical results on the AGARD 445.6 aeroelastic wing compare well with the experimental ones and show that the Schur-complement coupling algorithm is more robust than the Gauss-Seidel algorithm for relatively large oscillation amplitudes.

Inspired by the influential ‘reflective practitioner’ ideas of Donald Schön (1983), there is an established pedagogical tradition in the University College Cork, Centre for Planning Education & Research, in active learning, and using real projects with real clients as a teaching methodology. In semester two 2019, the first year Masters in Planning students engaged with the Glounthaune community to identify the community’s values and aspirations. Concurrently, the second year students prepared a masterplan for a new town centre, drawing on field work, research and findings from the aforementioned community engagement process. Personal reflection was formally embedded in both processes: students considered their professional and personal skills including working together, dealing with communities; active listening and thinking creatively. These reflections deepened the students’ learning through revisiting the experiences guided by a framework of prompted questions. In her discussion of the challenges in developing excellence in planners, Reeves (2009) insists that ‘Planners need to demonstrate their ability to transform understanding into practical and achievable outcomes… Employers want to see more than credentials; they want to see people demonstrating competence. One’s ability to do a job depends on knowledge, skills and qualities.’ Working on real projects with local communities while using reflection-on-action (Schön, 1983) to revisit the experience further develops their competencies.

Abstract:
The vibration behavior of ships is noticeably influenced by the surrounding water, which represents a fluid of high density. In this case, the feedback of the fluid pressure onto the structure cannot be neglected and a strong coupling scheme between the fluid domain and the structural domain is necessary. In this work, fast boundary element methods are used to model the semi-infinite fluid domain with the free water surface. Two approaches are compared: A symmetric mixed formulation is applied where a part of the water surface is discretized. The second approach is a formulation with a special half-space fundamental solution, which allows the exact representation of the Dirichlet boundary condition on the free water surface without its discretization. Furthermore, the influence of the compressibility of the water is investigated by comparing the solutions of the Helmholtz and the Laplace equation. The ship itself is modeled with the finite element method. A binary interface to the commercial finite element package ANSYS is used to import the mass matrix and the stiffness matrix. The coupled problems are formulated using Schur complements. To solve the resulting system of equations, a combination of a direct solver for the finite element matrix and a preconditioned GMRES for the overall Schur complement is chosen. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated using a realistic model problem.

Schon früh stand die Erforschung des Arbeitsmarktes und sein Versagen im Zentrum des Forschungsinteresses von Edmund Phelps. So kritisierte er bereits in den späten 1960er Jahren die damals weit verbreitete Ansicht keynesianisch ausgerichteter Ökonomen, dass die Zentralbank mittels Inflation Arbeitslosigkeit bekämpfen könne. Demgegenüber argumentierte Phelps (1967) und (1968), dass dieser auch als Phillips-Kurve bekannte Zusammenhang zwischen Inflation und Arbeitslosigkeit lediglich kurzfristig gelte. Ein dauerhafter Abbau dessen, was Phelps als „natürliche Arbeitslosenrate“ bezeichnet und vor allem die Beschäftigten im Niedriglohnsektor besonders stark betrifft, sei auf diesem Wege, d.h. unter Einsatz der herkömmlichen finanz- und geldpolitischen Instrumente, nicht möglich. Mit den nachfolgenden Überlegungen sollen sowohl die ökonomischen Rechtfertigungsargumente für entsprechende Lohnsubventionen als auch deren Wirkungsweise und sonstige Effekte – theoretisch wie empirisch – einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen werden. Zudem wird danach gefragt, durch welche Bestimmungsfaktoren erfolgreiche Arbeitsmarktreformen in verschiedenen Industrieländern in den zurückliegenden Jahren gekennzeichnet waren bzw. sind. Dabei soll gezeigt werden, dass zum einen die Phelps´schen Überlegungen als nicht hinreichend differenziert zu bewerten sind und daher einer Reihe von Ergänzungen bzw. Korrekturen bedürfen.

Verschiedene Studien geben schon erste Hinweise darauf, dass gegenwartsorientierte Verlaufsanpassungen keine Einzelfälle, sondern möglicherweise der Normalfall bei Finanzmarktprognose-Zeitreihen sein könnten. Allerdings beschränken sich einige dieser Studien auf die Betrachtung von nur wenigen Prognosezeitreihen. Andere Untersuchungen betrachten verhältnismäßig kurze Prognosezeitreihen. Die meisten Studien setzen sich lediglich mit Prognosen zu einzelnen nationalen Finanzmarktsegmenten auseinander. Es fehlt also eine große, international vergleichende Studie, die eine hohe Zahl langer Prognosezeitreihen untersucht. Die vorliegende Untersuchung soll diese Forschungslücke schließen. Im Folgenden werden 158.022 Zinsprognosen in 1.182 Prognosezeitreihen aus zwölf verschiedenen Nationen untersucht. Erst diese umfassende Datenauswertung macht es möglich, zu einer gesicherten Einschätzung darüber zu kommen, wie häufig gegenwartsorientierte Verlaufsanpassungen auftreten. Außerdem wird überprüft, ob es unabhängig vom Prognosehorizont, vom Kapitalmarktsegment und von den betrachteten Ländern zu gegenwartsorientierten Verlaufsanpassungen kommt. Das zweite Kapitel stellt die Datenbasis und die verwendete Methodik vor. Das dritte Kapitel ist der Ergebnisdarstellung vorbehalten. Das vierte Kapitel zeigt mögliche Ursachen für gegenwartsorientierte Verlaufsanpassungen auf. Eine Zusammenfassung findet sich im fünften Kapitel.
