Abstract:
In this paper, we first improve the boundary Schwarz lemma for holomorphic self-mappings of the unit ball Bn, and then we establish the boundary Schwarz lemma for harmonic self-mappings of the unit disk D and pluriharmonic self-mappings of Bn. The results are sharp and coincides with the classical boundary Schwarz lemma when n = 1.

A rule of thumb derivation of the Dirac–Born–Infeld action for D-branes is studied à la Fradkin and Tseytlin, by simply integrating out of the superstring coordinates in a narrow strip attached to the D-branes. We consider the 4-dimensional N=1 supergravity theory that emerges by generalized dimensional reduction of the d=10, N=1 supergravity coupled to E8⊗E8 super-Yang-Mills theory á la Scherk-Schwarz. It is shown that the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism leads to a spontaneously broken N=1, D=4 locally supersymmetric theory with vanishing cosmological constant only if some non-perturbative mechanism like gaugino condensation takes place in the hidden E8 sector.

Abstract:
This chapter comments on “Congressional Oversight Overlooked: Police Patrols versus Fire Alarms,” in which Mathew McCubbins and Thomas Schwartz used the analogy of police patrols and fire alarms to the role of the legislature in monitoring and controlling the bureaucracy. McCubbins and Schwartz made a case for Congress’s assessment of program implementation. The chapter examines the theory of fire alarm oversight, as well as the influence of McCubbins and Schwartz’s argument on how scholars think about Congress’s relationship to the bureaucracy. In particular, it considers the use of the theory of fire alarm oversight to challenge views equating delegation and the rise of an administrative state with the decline of legislative power. It highlights some of the criticisms made, especially with respect to Congress’s heavy reliance on reactive strategies to gather information about agency performance.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
More often than not, the mechanical properties (e.g., impact and tensile properties) of immiscible polymer blends are very poor owing to the lack of adhesion between the constituent components, which originates from strong repulsive thermodynamic (segmental) interactions. Therefore, in the past, a great deal of effort (Barlow and Paul 1984; Fayt and Teyssie 1989; Fayt et al. 1981, 1987, 1989; Gupta and Purwar 1985; Ouhadi et al. 1986a; Park et al. 1992; Schwarz et al. 1988, 1989; Srinivasan and Gupta 1994; Traugott et al. 1983) has been made to improve the mechanical properties of two immiscible polymers by adding a third component (e.g., a block copolymer). In this chapter, we confine our attention primarily to the situations where a nonreactive third component is added to two immiscible homopolymers in order to improve their mechanical properties. A polymer blend consisting of two immiscible homopolymers (say, A and B) has a very narrow interface, as schematically shown in Figure 4.1, because they have strong repulsive segmental interactions giving rise to a positive value of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter (χ), i.e., χAB > 0. Helfand and Tagami (1971, 1972) derived the following expression relating the interfacial thickness d of a pair of immiscible homopolymers of infinite molecular weight to χ: . . . d = 2b/(6χ)1/2 (4.1). . . where the Kuhn length b is assumed to be the same for both components. They also derived an expression for the interfacial tension γ between two immiscible homopolymers: . . . γ = (χ/6)1/2bρokBT . . . in terms of χ, where kB is the Boltzmann constant, T is the absolute temperature, and ρo is the reference density (the inverse of monomeric volume of a reference component). Equation (4.1) indicates that the interfacial thickness between two immiscible homopolymers will be larger when the extent of repulsive segmental interactions is less, and Eq. (4.2) indicates that the interfacial tension between two immiscible homopolymers will be lower when the extent of repulsive segmental interactions is less.

Abstract:
Cellular solids are a class of materials that have many interesting engineering applications, including ultralight structural materials [1]. The traditional method for analyzing these solids uses convex uniform polyhedral honeycombs to represent the geometry of the material [2], and this approach has carried over into the design of digital cellular solids [3]. However, the use of such honeycomb-derived lattices makes the problem of decomposing a three-dimensional lattice into a library of two-dimensional parts non-trivial. We introduce a method for generating periodic frameworks from Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS), which result in geometries that are easier to decompose into digital parts. Additionally, we perform multi-scale analysis of two cellular solids generated from two TPMS, the P- and D-Schwarz, and two cellular solids, the Kelvin and Octet honeycombs. We show that the simulated behavior of these TMPS-derived structures shows the expected modulus of the cellular solid scaling linearly with relative density, and matches the behavior of the octet truss.

Abstract:
"Given its significant negative consequences for university students, procrastination has been studied extensively and shown to be associated with conscientiousness as a personality trait. Involving 333 university students doing teacher training programmes (68.5% female; Mage=20.51 (SD=1.61); 83.48% undergraduates doing a bachelor’s degree), our study aimed to explore the association between procrastination among more/less conscientious students and selected self-concept variables (self-control, self-efficacy, etc.). Our questionnaire was based on the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (Gosling, Rentfrow, Swann, 2003), the Self-Control Scale (Finkenauer, Engels, Baumeister, 2005), the Self-efficacy Scale (Ko?š, Hefteyova, Schwarzer, Jerusalem, 1993), and the Procrastination Scale for Student Populations (Gabrhelík, 2008); our control variables were gender and well- being (Subjective Well-Being Scale, Chan-Hoong, Soon, 2011). The sample was divided into two groups – (1) less conscientious and (2) more conscientious) – using the method of visual binning in SPSS 20. A t-test for independent samples and linear regression were used for data analysis. The less conscientious students in our sample reported a higher level of procrastination (t=6.479; df=310; p?0.001; Cohen's d=0.681). A linear model was conducted for both groups (the dependent variable being the level of procrastination, the independent variables being gender and the levels of self-control, self-efficacy, and well-being). Both models were significant ((1) F=8.449; p?0.001; R2=32.6; (2) F= 7.277; p?0.001; R2=25.7). Among the less conscientious students, the levels of self-control (?=-0.546; t=-5.262; p?0.001) and self-efficacy (?=-0.238; t=-2.092; p?0.001) were negatively associated with procrastination. Among the more conscientious students, the level of self-control (?=0.404; t=-3.929; p?0.001) was negatively associated with procrastination and “being a man” (0–man; 1–woman) (?=-0.307; t=-3.219; p?0.05) was significantly associated with the level of procrastination. The results of our study show trait and personality differences in the level of procrastination, highlighting the importance of self-control and self-efficacy development among university students. Interactive programmes with an impact on students’ self-concept can be a significant contribution to students’ ability to cope with their study requirements effectively. It could be argued that the limits of this study include cross-sectional and self-reported data."
