Abstract:

Abstract:
This article describes a knowledge preservation and re-use tool designed to capture the knowledge of a specific individual at the US National Science Foundation, for later retrieval by successors after his retirement. The system is designed in a Q&A format, where it is sufficiently intelligent to ask for clarifying questions. The primary objective was to create a system that would result in acceptance of the system by the users. The domain of interest to be preserved and re-used was programmatic knowledge about the NSF Industry/University Collaborative Research Centers (I/UCRC) Program, and more specifically, the knowledge of its long-time director, Dr. Alex Schwarzkopf. The system is called AskAlex and it uses a trio of techniques to accomplish its objectives. Contextual graphs (CxG) are used as the basic knowledge representation structure. CxG’s are assisted by a search engine and an ontology of terms to help find the proper contextual graph that can best answer the question being asked. Evaluations with users and potential users generally confirm our selection and provided some guidance for improvements in the system.

Abstract:
Writers have compared the media frenzy of the Gulf War to the coverage ofa football game. Critics noted the pep rally atmosphere created by journalists(Charles Osgood's description of US bombing as a "marvel"; Dan Rather's"Congratulations on a job wonderfully done."). A Chicago Tribune cartoon portrayedSaudi and Kuwaiti emirs in luxury boxes awaiting the war, heckling Bush to “Throw the bomb!” Perhaps it was that pause in the second week of thebombing, allowing most US soldiers to watch the Super Bowl, but Americansdid seem to confuse the war with a sporting event. Both features perceived goodguys and bad guys, satisfying but guilt-free violence, little sympathy for thecasualties . . . and plenty of cheerleaders.Books about the Gulf War extend this comparison to sports coverage. Afterthe big game, our fist wave of analysts report from postgame interviews. Theseare generally shallow and simplistic, breathless with elation and self-glory.Comparable books on the Gulf War, including biographies of Schwarzkopf,Powell, and Bush, now cram the discount tables at the large booksellers. Insports, the second wave of analysts, back in the studio, offer somewhat meatierexplanations and more subtle rationalizations for the events just reported. Theiremotions are thinly concealed in a semblance of objectivity ...

Abstract:
Increasing the dietary intake of K reduces the Mg absorption from the forestomachs of ruminants by decreasing the apical membrane potential and increasing the transepithelial potential difference (Vt). To evaluate genetic variations in the dependence of Mg absorption on K intake, we performed Ussing chamber experiments and studied the effect of Vt on 28Mg fluxes across rumen epithelium from different breeds of sheep. All breeds showed net absorption of Mg (JMgnet) in the absence of electrochemical gradients. JMgnet of Skudde was lower compared to Merino or Schwarzkopf sheep. Increasing Vt decreased mucosal to serosal Mg flux (JMgms) and increased serosal to mucosal Mg flux. The effect of Vt on JMgnet was almost identical in all breeds of sheep (−30 to −45% for a 25 mV increase in Vt). The effect of Vt on JMgms revealed a Vt-dependent and a Vt-independent component of transcellular Mg absorption in all breeds. Considering the driving forces for these two Mg transport mechanisms, the effect of K on Mg absorption will mainly depend on the feeding regimen, i.e. dietary K must have a relatively higher effect on Mg absorption at low Mg intake levels, which explains the correlation between pasture quality and tetany frequency as well as the missing effect of K on Mg status in some older studies.

Abstract:
Mintegy 30 évvel ezelőtt, Kuvait 1990-es iraki megszállásának idején – dacára a második világháború óta megvívott csaták tapasztalatai alapján kiadott irányelveknek – az amerikai fegyveres erők különböző szintű vezetői és szakértői még mindig azon vitáztak, hogy mi is a légierő szerepe egy összhaderőnemi műveletben. A „szárazföld” berkeiben népszerű elmélet alapján – amit szerintük az 1980-as években kiadott AirLand Battle doktrína is alátámasztott – a légierő kizárólagosan a szárazföldi erők támogatására hivatott.

Abstract:
BackgroundThere is an outstanding need for prognostic biomarkers to reliably detect fast-progressing knee osteoarthritis (OA) such that preventative interventions can be targeted to this patient population. MicroRNA-sequencing is an unbiased approach for comprehensive profiling of circulating microRNAs in liquid biopsies to discover novel biomarkers of disease. As negative regulators of gene expression, microRNAs hold potential not only as biomarkers, but also as mechanistic drivers of knee OA.ObjectivesTo apply microRNA-sequencing to identify unique circulating microRNAs as potential biomarkers that distinguish fast-progressing radiographic knee OA from both slow- and non-progressing radiographic knee OA.MethodsLeveraging the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) longitudinal cohort, we applied our customized microRNA-sequencing pipeline [1] to blood plasma samples collected at both baseline and 4-year follow-up from 106 participants. The disease trajectory for each participant was constructed by plotting their Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grades over an 8-year follow-up period. Based on these trajectories, we defined fast-progression as an increase from KL 0/1 at baseline to KL 3/4 by 4-year follow-up, slow-progression as an increase from KL 0/1 at baseline to KL 2/3/4 by 8-year follow-up, and non-progression as no increase from KL0/1 at baseline throughout the 8-year follow-up. Following differential expression analysis, we assessed predictive performance and identified putative gene targets for prioritized microRNAs.ResultsComparing fast-progressors to both slow-progressors and non-progressors, we identified differentially expressed microRNAs within timepoints (i.e., 48 microRNAs at baseline and 2 microRNAs at 4-year follow-up) and across timepoints. Among these microRNAs were four members of the miR-320 family, with miR-320d showing an increase in fast-progressors at both timepoints, compared to both slow- and non-progressors. The predictive models we constructed included miR-320 members and had good accuracy (area under the receiver operating characteristic curves ranging from 82.6 to 91.9) in distinguishing fast-progressors. Putative gene targets of the miR-320 family included members of the 14-3-3 gene family (Table 1), including YWHAE, whose downregulation in OA cartilage was reported to promote deterioration [2].Table 1.Predicted gene targets of the miR-320 family include members of the 14-3-3 gene family.14-3-3 gene family memberhsa-miR-320bhsa-miR-320chsa-miR-320dhsa-miR-320eSFNMMMLYWHABMMMMYWHAEVVVHYWHAGVVVMYWHAHVVVMYWHAQVVVMYWHAZVVVMAll mirDIP results with bold text indicating the prediction was among the top 1% for that microRNA/gene target pair. Letters denote the mirDIP score class with V=very high, H=high, M=medium, and L=low.ConclusionThis microRNA-sequencing study is the first of its kind, profiling circulating microRNAs at two timepoints in 106 participants with data-driven construction of knee OA trajectories. We identify the miR-320 family of microRNAs to be associated with fast-progressing radiographic knee OA over time. While our data suggest this microRNA family could have applications as prognostic biomarkers for knee OA, and could be regulating gene targets to impact OA severity, validation of these findings in independent longitudinal cohorts is required.References[1]Potla P, Ali SA, Kapoor M. Abstract:
The weakening of the SFRY (Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia) which was followed by its dissolution, had an impact on a wide range of issues, one of them being the degradation of the so called Serbo-Croatian language. Not only did the external political influences contribute to the dissolution of the SFRY, but they also play a part in the linguistic profiling of new standard varieties today. However, as the dissolution of Yugoslavia couldn't have been imagined without consequences for Serbs primarily, the transformation of the 'Serbo-Croatian' language into a series of new language norms-successors of the old ones, cannot take place without challenging the rights of the great number of Serbs who live outside of Serbia. These are the rights that primarily refer to the linguistic and social identity - therefore the national identity. The best illustration of this are the external influences in the domain of linguistic engineering today, and these influences can basically be divided into extensive (e. g. commercials, radio and TV programmes) and intensive (textbooks, handbooks etc). The aim of this study is the analysis of those different kinds of pressures put on the standard variety of the language of Serbs. From the domain of the extensive influences (commercials) there is an example of the instruction given on a tube of toothpaste (Vademecum laboratories, Perfection 5 - Schwarzkopf & Henkel, Dusseldorf - Germany), and as an example of the intensive influences of this type, there is an American textbook (R. Alexander, E. Elias-Bursa} Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, a Textbook, With Exercises and Basic Grammar, The University of Wisconsin Press, 2006). Both of these language materials proved to be highly compatible when it comes to the characteristics that should become an integral part of the standard language variety of Serbs, and apparently only the Serbs who live in Serbia. Among the language characteristics which are 'typically Serbian' the most prominent are: ekavian dialect ('lepa deca', not: 'lijepa djeca'), the 'da + prezent' construction ('moram da citam', not: 'moram citati'), the prepositional form 'sa' ('sa limunom', not: 's limunom'), as well as many other characteristics like interrogative sentences beginning with da li ('Da li si student?', not 'Jesi li student?') etc. As it follows the newly formed political borders in the area of the former SFRY, the contemporary linguistic engineering has engaged itself in creation of the new standard language varieties, including the one (or should we say, primarily the one) that belongs to the Serbs. However, the Serbs don't have the need for the re-standardization of their language (which became widely familiar to the European community since the 17th century, and it underwent the process of standardization at the beginning of the 19th century owing to the work of Vuk Karadzic) after the dissolution of SFRY, especially if it would be carried out from the outside and not take into account all the entities of this nation, e. g. the Serbs in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro etc. Because it is those Serbs who have always contributed significantly to the culture, science, and the overall identity of the Serbs generally, doing an immense favor to the European and even the world culture, and science in general. That is why the European culture - if it seeks to remain multiethnic and democratic - and other cultures similar to her, must allow the Serbs to preserve their cultural and national identity, wherever they may live - and the best proof of this will be its attitude towards the standard language variety which was established by Serbs almost two centuries ago.

Abstract:

Abstract. Landmarks play an important role in navigation especially when people in the familiar and unfamiliar environment. These landmarks are usually used for expressing their spatial knowledge. This prior knowledge is related to the spatial familiarity that the spatial knowledge is acquired by individuals as a function of their experience in the environment (Gale et al., 1990). Individuals prefers to take into highly account their familiar route within the environment. Furthermore, the route descriptions include the differed types of landmarks in familiar/unfamiliar routes (Lovelace et al., 1999). The user’s level of spatial familiarity for people is a key factor of how they navigate in the environment (Savage et al., 2012). In human navigation or wayfinding, the dependency on familiar landmarks is the highest priority (Golledge, 2003).

Landmarks are more distinguishably salient and prominent than the another spatial features (Sorrows and Hirtle, 1999). Therefore, the landmark salience refers to how easily this prominent spatial feature can be regarded as a landmark (Raubal and Winter, 2002). The landmark salience mainly divided into visual, structural (important location), and cognitive (semantic). Visual salience refers to the visual characteristics of spatial features such as color contrast with surroundings. Some visual characteristics include facade areas, shapes, colors and other properties. Semantic salience refers to the spatial knowledge related features such as a cultural importance of building. Structural salience refers to the spatial features play an important role in the structure of the spatial environment.

The level of spatial knowledge of the individual also an important factor in landmark selection (Nuhn and Timpf, 2018). Hamburger and Röser (2014) investigated landmark semantics and showed that famous buildings were better recognized than unfamiliar ones. Quesnot and Roche (2015) found that the familiar individuals prefer the semantic landmarks in environment while the unfamiliar individuals prefer the landmark with the prominent visual and structural. In contrast, people unfamiliar with an environment prefer landmarks with outstanding visual and structural characteristics.

The existing literature studies the method that landmark indicators to be considered are not comprehensive while can’t reflect on the landmark characteristics. The reason is that the method of calculation and extraction for landmarks can’t conform the individual preference needs of navigation. Compared with the traditional subjective evaluation method, the eye-tracking method provide objectivity and reliability. For example, a mobile eye tracking system was used by Kiefer et al. (2014) to investigate the process of self-localization. They discovered that test persons directed their attention longer on landmarks on the map and aligned them with objects in the surroundings during successful localization of their own position. Schwarzkopf et al. (2013) used fixed and mobile eye tracking devices to study that participates selected the navigation landmarks in the virtual environment and the real-world of the airport. In general, there are an only limited number of works related to the influence of spatial familiarity on landmark by using eye tracking method.

At present, many navigation systems are providing users with route directions under different travel modes. These navigation systems have the "distance-to-turn" method in route directions, however the landmark knowledge has not been conformed to user's habits and spatial cognitive in wayfinding. In order to solve these problems, this paper aims to study the characteristics of the user’s spatial familiarity and landmark salience evaluation method in navigation. The following questions are addressed in this study: 1) What’s the relationship between the spatial familiarity with the landmark selection in navigation for individuals? 2) What is the quantitative evaluation model to connect between the spatial familiarity with the landmark salience by using the eye-tracking data?

In our experiments, we will use eye tracking to explore the influence of spatial familiarity on landmark salience. The experimental path is part of the campus area of Nanjing Normal University. The subjects are divided into novice students and senior students from Nanjing Normal University as unfamiliar and familiar groups respectively. The procedures are divided into two parts, namely, the subjects should walk the experimental path within the fixation time and then they are asked to wear VR eye tracking module a Glass DK II special for HTC view (China; https://www.7invensun.com/) to do three types of tasks about landmark picture with the characteristics of visual, semantic and structural. With this research, we expect to establish a landmark salience evaluation method through eye movement data and analyse the landmark selection rules of groups with different spatial familiarity. It is helpful to design the pedestrian navigation system based on landmarks, improve the pertinence and reliability of navigation services and reduce the cognitive load for users.

Abstract:
During the summer of 1993, CBS News aired an hour-long television special program entitled Schwarzkopf in Vietnam: A Soldier Returns. This program, hereafter referred to as SVN:ASR, featured a return trip to Southeast Asia by retired US Army General H. Norman Schwarzkopf and CBS News personality Dan Rather, both of whom served in different capacities in Southeast Asia during the war years. Their current trip to Vietnam was the first time either person had been back to Indochina since the end of the war in April 1975. First and foremost, we must recognize that this particular program is a commodity. SVN:ASR was broadcast on network television, which like any other commercial enterprise exists to make a profit. Viewing this artifact at face value, the program appeared to be strictly informative -- a televised lesson in American military history given by a well-known military figure. One could reasonably surmise that the network...

Abstract:
This research examines Hungarian customers’ eco-conscious consumption in the sector of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods, namely hair care products. The research provides an introduction to eco-consciousness and sustainability and discusses climate change and controversial opinions on plastic packaging. To receive a wider overview of the behaviour of customers, questions have been formed to lead the research. For instance, how open Hungarian consumers are to sustainable consumption, how much are they influenced by the knowledge they have about environmental problems and climate change, and what changes they have already made to develop eco-conscious purchasing habits. To reach enough participants, the researcher used a questionnaire and analysed its answers in an attempt to answer the research questions. For obtaining more personal and deeper opinions, the research had several personal interviews with participants from different age and gender groups, and asked them about their habits, regarding the consumption of eco-conscious hair care consumption. Furthermore, the researcher also had an interview with a member of Schwarzkopf Professional Hungary. The results of the research reveal that consumers exhibit a high-level environmental awareness, and they are conscious of their purchasing habits, but they lack the motivation to make changes in their purchasing habits. On the other hand, price is an important factor in decision-making, thus there is a lack of sustainable options to choose from.
