Here we report on a new Helodrilus species found in Rotthalmünster, Southern Germany. This unique new species has four pairs of spermathecae and long protruding tubercles. Besides Lumbricus badensis Michaelsen, 1907 from Schwarzwald forest, this is the second earthworm species from Germany that appears to be endemic, suggesting that the southern part of present-day Germany may represent the northern limit of the distribution of endemic earthworm species.

The rapid decline of German emigration before World War I constitutes a puzzle that traditional explanations have difficulty in solving. The article shows that the social legislation implemented by Bismarck during the 1880s—the most developed at the time—played a key role in this process. AbstractIn the Variscan Schwarzwald metabasic rocks form small bodies included within anatectic plagioclase-biotite gneisses. Many metabasites first underwent an eclogite-facies metamorphism at about 2.0 GPa and 670–700 °C, resulting in the assemblage garnet + omphacite + rutile + quartz ± epidote ± amphibole ± kyanite. Since these eclogites are nearly free of an OH-bearing phase, they underwent almost complete dehydration during subduction, suggesting formation along an average to warm top-of-the-slab geotherm of 10–13 °C/km. The age of the Variscan high-P/high-T metamorphism is > 333 Ma.

A combined fluid inclusion and stable isotope study has been carried out on over 180 individual samples from 89 post-Variscan hydrothermal veins (Pb-Zn-Cu-bearing fluorite-barite-quartz veins, Co-Ni-Ag-Bi-U-bearing barite-fluorite-quartz veins and barren barite-fluorite-quartz veins) from the Schwarzwald district, Germany. The salinities of fluid inclusions in post-Variscan primary fluorite, calcite, barite and quartz are in the range of 22–25 wt.% equivalent (eqv.) Sedimentation ages of metamorphosed clastic sedimentary rocks in the southern Schwarzwald were determined by associations of palynomorphs.
