Abstract:
To read a scientific article is a comprehensive task. Normally one can approach this task with treating it like textbook; reading the scientific article from title to references cited, accepting everything along the way without any your reflection or criticism over the article, is the most wrong way of reading an article. Reading a scientific research article for the first time may be confusing and little difficult to comprehend. The current information suggests you how to read a scientific article beat by beat and thoroughly. You should not approach a scientific article like a textbook; i.e. reading from beginning to end of the chapter or book without pause for reflection or criticism. Additionally, it is highly recommended that you highlight and take notes as you move through the article. Having proper notes while reading an article will keep you focused on the task and help you work towards proper comprehension of the entire article.

Abstract:
Scientific (academic) writing is continuous activity of every scientist (researcher), and therefore needs to be regularly advanced. Thus, it should be wrong to assume that writing proficiency is achieved once and for all. The skills of academic writing are essential for the independent acquisition of scientific knowledge and for disseminating the acquired information, i.e. sharing knowledge with others. On these grounds, it is worth remembering that a fully completed research paper, the clear results of the conducted research and specific and valid conclusions act as prerequisites for writing a good scientific article etc. Another trivial but important point is that writing an article (or other research paper) is barely a study itself, but only the presentation, dissemination and publicity of the findings. Consequently, even properly carried out research (exploration, examination etc.) and the obtained significant results may fail to be appropriately presented, and the importance of the produced results may simply ‘disappear’ in a poor description.

This research has the general objective to investigate how the students of masters in arts (languages, specifically) use intertextuality (in the case of this research, citations as an explicit manifestation of intertextuality) to build their academic identity by producing scientific articles. The specific objectives aimed to verify how the masters in arts employ the quotes in his writings, reflecting rhetorical choices that characterize them as participants in the discoursive community of which they are part of; investigate how they build their arguments from the discourse of other authors; analyze how the masters use the quotes in different sections of articles under the influence of rhetorical functions of these sections; and, finally, check understanding they have of the importance of the scientific article in the constitution of their academic identity. This way, our study is linked to the socio-constructivist conception of identity, inspired by authors such as Hoffnagel (2008; 2009; 2010), Woodward (2012), Silva (2012) and Moita-Lopes (2003, 2011); the New Literacy Studies, with Street (1984; 2007) and Lea & Street (1998); the gender conceptions in social perspective and the design of intertextuality with Bazerman (2005). We chose as the first corpora for analysis 18 scientific articles produced by masters of the Professional Master of Arts (PROFLETRAS), by the University of Pernambuco (UPE - Campus Garanhuns) class 2013.2. We also apply a questionnaire to those students, whose answers made up our second corpora. In this sense, our focus was to analyze how these students used the quotes in their articles, watching the rhetorical strategies used by them in this practice. The analysis of the citations was based on the categories proposed by Swales (1990), Cortes (2012) and Hoffnagel (2009). The reason why the scientific article gender is our object of analysis is because it is a place marked by the voices of several authors, and it is also an important genre in the college for moving the research activity. With the analysis of quotes, we could see the strategies used by masters in arts that revealed aspects of their academic identity. The data analyzed shows the preference of students for more quotes that privilege the author cited as a value name, more then the message they pass. Also, with the analysis, we found the preference for indirect way to quote, although direct quotations have been more used as a basis for further arguments. As for the quotes used in each section of articles, we observed that students, in general, proved consistent to use the quote according to the rhetorical functions of these sections, also showing, through their answers to the questionnaire, which comprise the scientific article as a genre that provides its identity as author and researcher.

Abstract:
Scientific papers are a rich source of material for undergraduate work. Carefully designed assignments based on selected papers offer opportunities for students to develop skills needed by professional chemists and at the same time reinforce their chemical knowledge. This work describes a research journal assignment introduced into a scientific communication course. The assignment provided a method to acquaint students with the current chemical literature and the main goal is to develop students’ reading and interpretation abilities of this kind of material. Papers from the journals Química Nova and Eclética Química were chosen as the main material of this assignment. The students were provided with guidelines to critically read and discuss the research articles and were required to turn-in a written text (free genre) of what they had read, which would then be directed to a reader with the characteristics of a freshman chemistry student. The texts written by the students were analysed by Discourse Analysis, in its French orientation, as divulged by Eni Orlandi. It was concluded that the assignment enabled the majority of the students to express a great amount of personal reflection in the texts, showing their individual understanding in a different format and approach than what was read in the original paper.

To the description and analysis of the data it is used the functional perspective on language, in which the language is not understood as an independent object, but as a system under the pressure of communicative situations. Thus, this investigation focuses on the expressions in use, trying to understand the functioning of the language, since it is through the use that the expressions acquire meaning. In order to make this research possible the corpus used is constituted by 9 scientific articles taken from Linguistics annals published within the years of 2008 and 2009. We have chosen the analysis of evidentiality and epistemic modality as functional domains which mark the level of engagement of a scientific article writer since we have as a presupposition that in such case, we may find several registers of these categories used as detachment strategies, considering that the author of this type of writing leads towards objectiveness as stipulated by manuals of scientific methodology, getting detached from the content to preserve the work scientific style. 410 occurrences have been collected and analyzed concerning synthetic (means of expressions and position of evidential marks in the statement), semantic (type of domain and source of the evidential manifestation), and pragmatic (level of commitment of a scientific article writer with the stated content, and the presence of explicit marks of adhesion) aspects. The results proved that evidentiality and epistemic modality are used in scientific texts to promote an effect of medium engagement, revealing that the scientific discourse is marked by the use of expressions that mask the author’s subjectivity and highlight their partial engagement with the established truth. Concerning the means of expressions used, we observed that scientific article writers prefer the use of evidential and epistemic modal manifestations expressed through verbal items. Regarding the analyzed genre, it has been found more occurrences related to the reported evidentiality from a definite source, with interspersed marks between the source of information and the established content.

English has become crucial for success in publishing scientific articles within the globalized academic world. Although English has become a Lingua Franca and, therefore, has been used to speak among people with different mother tongues who share English as a second language, the same openness is not found within scientific articles ? which have a specific structure, regardless of the nationality of the writer. In light of this multicultural process, this thesis aims to provide scientific article writers with a theoretical outline about the relevance of cross-cultural and pragmatic knowledge when writing, especially regarding the use of hedging. This thesis was developed based on the hypothesis that some pragmatic features, specifically hedging, might transfer from a writer?s first language (L1) to their second language (L2) and that such transfer would diminish their chances in successful publication of scientific articles in journals. In order to confirm this hypothesis, the following has been developed: first, a theoretical background has been presented, providing basis on pragmatic awareness, pragmatic transfer and multicultural communication. After, hedges and hedging strategies have been introduced and discussed, focusing on the differences between hedges and hedging, and the pragmatic effect that hedging causes. The following section describes the methodology and comprises the analysis of the introduction section of scientific articles produced by a native speaker (NS) and a non-native speaker (NNS), in this case a Brazilian. Both scientific articles are within the same area of knowledge, namely the business area. The aforementioned analysis and theoretical research support suggestions on how to rephrase categorical sentences found in the article written by a NNS. As a result, many instances were found where NNSs hedging is lacking, evidencing the necessity of an enhanced pragmatic awareness when a NNS writes a scientific article.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to investigate the translation stategies chosen by the translator when translating present and past participles in contracted sentences in a French scientific article into Swedish. Previous research shows that the French language has a predilection for an elliptical sentences structure, whereas the Swedish language prefers complete clauses. This difference could eventually cause problems during the translation process when translating the French present and past participles in contracted sentences into Swedish. The source text has been translated into Swedish. The translation of the participles has then been categorized according to the strategy chosen by the translator and then analyzed according to the theoretical models by Eriksson (1997, 2015) and Ingo (2007). Our study shows that the majority of the present and past participles in contracted sentences in the source text has been translated into complete causes in the target text. The relative clause seems to be the most common choice by the translator. However, other strategies have sometimes been chosen, often as a consequence of an already complicated sentence structure in the target text or due to stylistic choices.

Abstract:
This study aims at analyzing evidentiality and epistemic modality and their relationship with the level of engagement of a scientific article writer and the stated content. The results proved that evidentiality and epistemic modality are used in scientific texts to promote an effect of medium engagement, revealing that the scientific discourse is marked by the use of expressions that mask the authorâs subjectivity and highlight their partial engagement with the established truth.

Stolyarov, Vladislav. Dialectical methodology of theory construction in modern scientific knowledge. INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/2099001.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the analysis of dialectical (based on the theory of dialectics, dialectical thinking) methodology of theory construction. The concept of this methodology is based on the ideas of the world-famous logician A.A. Zinoviev about dialectical thinking as a system of logical operations, techniques, procedures in order to obtain an integral dialectical system of scientific knowledge about the essence, properties, structure, connections, change, functioning and development, contradictions of the studied object. The results of the author's long-term (more than 50 years) development of the problems of dialectical methodology of theory construction and application of this methodology in sports science are summarized. Not only the general concept of the dialectical methodology of theoretical research is outlined, but also specific logical techniques, procedures for solving certain problems of constructing a theory based on this methodology. The article substantiates the position that dialectical methodology does not deny, but organically complements the methodology of theory construction based on the means of symbolic logic (axiomatic method, method of formalization) and mathematics. The views of other researchers regarding not only dialectical methodology, but also other aspects of the concept of theoretical research are presented and evaluated. It is intended for people engaged in scientific knowledge, interested in the problems of scientific research, as well as the application of the results of this research in practice.

Full text
Abstract:
The article is a reference to a scientific publication by Mykola Tymoshyk, Professor and Head of the Department of Journalism at the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, who raised a number of topical issues in the field of national journalism studies. The purpose of this review is to examine the main points of this article through the prism of my teaching (primarily lecturing) and journalistic experience. Using the method of content analysis, the article discusses the controversial issues related to the concept of «journalism genre», distinguishes the strengths of the researcher’s main theses on the theory and practice of genres. The article points out the valuable aspects of Prof. Tymoshyk’s article for researchers of journalistic genres, especially with regard to the grouping of genres in the works of foreign authors (European and American schools of journalism). These groupings are supplemented by the vision of German authors - researchers of media genres. In this article the author uses the historical method to examine the current works of Ukrainian media scholars on the issue of the main groups of genres. The author discusses with Prof. M. Tymoshyk on the subject of presence of some genres in the media of our information space and the expediency of their consideration in the studies of media researchers. Attention is paid to the advantages of this publication in relation to the following issues: the ambiguity of journalistic investigation from the point of view of journalism theory, the expediency of using the concept of «hybrid genres» in scientific texts of media researchers. The conclusion about necessity of further research on the issues of genre creation in journalism, especially in the context of the current war is made. The researcher’s thesis about the importance of not theoretical «new products» in the form of new names of genres as forms of journalistic presentation, but the substantiation of their varieties within the existing genres of national journalism is accepted. Key words: genre, genre studies, journalism, school of journalism, article, author, scientific publication.
