Abstract:
The textbook discusses the main ways of cognition, research of phenomena, processes occurring in various system formations, organizations of the surrounding reality. The article analyzes the content of the category "method" in its broadest essence, understood as a system of regulatory principles of cognition, transformation and management, from ways of fixing individual observed phenomena to translating and transforming them into scientific facts and further into patterns, structures and models reflecting reality. The processes reflecting the formation, formation of a scientific idea and its subsequent transformation into a product, scientific theory, technology, program, mechanism are described. Organizational and managerial technologies of scientific research are presented. The training material is presented in the paradigm of the methodology of the system approach.

Stolyarov, Vladislav. Dialectical methodology of theory construction in modern scientific knowledge. INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/2099001.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the analysis of dialectical (based on the theory of dialectics, dialectical thinking) methodology of theory construction. The concept of this methodology is based on the ideas of the world-famous logician A.A. Zinoviev about dialectical thinking as a system of logical operations, techniques, procedures in order to obtain an integral dialectical system of scientific knowledge about the essence, properties, structure, connections, change, functioning and development, contradictions of the studied object. The results of the author's long-term (more than 50 years) development of the problems of dialectical methodology of theory construction and application of this methodology in sports science are summarized. Not only the general concept of the dialectical methodology of theoretical research is outlined, but also specific logical techniques, procedures for solving certain problems of constructing a theory based on this methodology. The article substantiates the position that dialectical methodology does not deny, but organically complements the methodology of theory construction based on the means of symbolic logic (axiomatic method, method of formalization) and mathematics.
The views of other researchers regarding not only dialectical methodology, but also other aspects of the concept of theoretical research are presented and evaluated.
It is intended for people engaged in scientific knowledge, interested in the problems of scientific research, as well as the application of the results of this research in practice.

Abstract:
This article studies politics and scientific inquiry. It first determines what the state is, and examines the ethical norms for guiding the behaviour of decision-makers. The unitary-mind model is discussed in one section, and this is followed by the theory of ‘democratic’ politics. The object of collective action, normative relevance, and the operational science of politics are some of the topics discussed in this article.

Abstract:
What constitutes scientific progress? This article considers and evaluates three competing answers to this question. These seek to understand scientific progress in terms of problem-solving, of truthlikeness/verisimilitude, and of knowledge, respectively. How does each fare, taking into consideration the fact that the history of science involves disruptive change, not merely the addition of new beliefs to old beliefs, and the fact that sometimes the history of such changes involves a sequence of theories, all of which are believed to be false, even by scientific realists? The three answers are also evaluated with regard to how they assess certain real and hypothetical scientific changes. Also considered are the three views of the goal of science implicit in the three answers. The view that the goal of science is knowledge and that progress is constituted by the accumulation of knowledge is argued to be preferable to its competitors.

Lyons, Timothy D. Scientific Realism. Edited by Paul Humphreys. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199368815.013.30.

Full text
Abstract:
This article endeavors to identify the strongest versions of the two primary arguments against epistemic scientific realism: the historical argument—generally dubbed “the pessimistic meta-induction”—and the argument from underdetermination. It is shown that, contrary to the literature, both can be understood as historically informed but logically valid modus tollens arguments. After specifying the question relevant to underdetermination and showing why empirical equivalence is unnecessary, two types of competitors to contemporary scientific theories are identified, both of which are informed by science itself. With the content and structure of the two nonrealist arguments clarified, novel relations between them are uncovered, revealing the severity of their collective threat against epistemic realism and its “no-miracles” argument. The final section proposes, however, that the realist’s axiological tenet “science seeks truth” is not blocked. An attempt is made to indicate the promise for a nonepistemic, purely axiological scientific realism—here dubbed “Socratic scientific realism.”

Abstract:
This article asks whether there was a Scientific Revolution (SR) at anytime between 1550 and1800. The label ‘Scientific Revolution’ to indicate a period in the development of natural knowledge in early modern Europe has carved a place in historiography. This article suggests that there was SR, if SR signifies a period of time; perhaps, if it is taken as a metaphor. It illustrates how the deployment of the metaphor to seventeenth-century natural knowledge might be accomplished. It also considers the physics of René Descartes, the influence of Cartesianism throughout the Republic of Letters, and the academies. The metaphor can be useful if it is taken in analogy to a major political revolution. The analogy points to a later onset, and a swifter career, for the SR than is usually prescribed, and shows that Isaac Newton was its counter rather than its culmination.

Abstract:
This article argues that ‘substantial progress derives from informal reasoning and qualitative insights’. It shows the role played by causal process observations (CPOs), and qualitative reasoning more generally, in a series of well-known episodes drawn from the history of medicine. Edward Jenner published twenty-three case studies to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of ‘vaccination’. Ignac Semmelweis discovered the cause of puerperal fever. John Snow revealed that cholera was a water-borne infectious disease, which could be prevented by cleaning up the water supply. Christiaan Eijkman's research plan was to use Koch's methods, and show that beriberi was an infectious disease. Joseph Goldberger believed that pellagra was a deficiency disease. Frederick McKay and his connection with fluoridation, and the discovery of Alexander Fleming to penicillin, are discussed. In addition, the breakthrough of German measles by Norman Gregg is reported. Finally, Arthur Herbst offers the association between diethylstibestrol and adenocarcinoma of the vagina.
