Abstract:
Despite formulating an alternative reading of redemptive history, the Scofield Reference Bible was unable to finally repudiate the theology of biblical covenants which had previously dominated Reformed thought. Scofield’s manipulation of the covenants stood in tension with his theology of dispensations, and accounts for many of the most important innovations in the system of his thought. This article seeks to balance the neglect of Scofield’s covenant theology.

Dispensing Dispensationalism explores the hermeneutic of Cyrus Ingerson Scofield as found in the second edition of the Scofield Reference Bible, published in 1917. It seeks to prove that this is no ordinary reference Bible but is a volume which employs the annotation of selected texts to promote a classical dispensationalist interpretation. It also aims to contextualise Scofield in succession to John Nelson Darby and as predecessor to later dispensationalists such as Lewis Sperry Chafer, Charles Ryrie, Craig Blaising, Darrell Bock and Robert Saucy. This thesis offers a multilayered image of Dr. Scofield's life by considering political and regional influences, racial and gender attitudes, and religious views he encountered between 1861 and 1921. This study includes an examination of his participation in the American Civil War including his desertion of the South in 1862. After becoming a Union loyalist, Scofield excelled as
