I thank the contributors for their comments. We all agree that the Jerimalai data provide an intriguing glimpse of maritime activity in the Wallacean Pleistocene by showing that Scombridae were unusually prominent amongst 15 families of fish that had been caught around 40 000 BP. In various ways, we also agree that the hypothesis interpreting these data in O'Connor et al. (2011) is far from robust. Its fundamental proposition was that the scombrids were oceanic tuna, but O'Connor and Ono (above) now concede that, 'as we did not speciate [sic] the scombrids at Jerimalai we cannot be certain tha

Subsequently, this species was assigned to the mackerel genus Scomber. New findings in the Sarmatian of the North Caucasus (Krasnodar Region, Pshekha River) revealed a serious reduction in the number of vertebrae in S. caucasicus (Bogatshov) (up to 28), which is extremely unusual for Scombridae with at least 31 vertebrae. The Scombridae family represents one of the most commercially valuable groups of pelagic fish, widely consumed across the globe. Despite their economic importance and high market demand, scientific data on Scombridae species in Aceh remains scarce. This study aimed to document Scombridae landings from Aceh waters. Fish samples belonging to the Scombridae family were collected from several Fish Landing Sites (TPIs) across Aceh Province. The collected samples were subsequently analyzed at the Genetics and Aquatic Biodiversity Laboratory, Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Universitas Syiah Kuala.

Fishes within the family Scombridae (i.e. tunas, mackerels and bonitos) are of high ecological and economic value, as they are heavily targeted by commercial and recreational fisheries. In coastal and open-ocean environments, adults are high-level predators, while larvae and juveniles serve as prey for numerous species. Much is known about the distribution and abundance of adult tunas, but high taxonomic uncertainty and limited knowledge regarding the distributional patterns of larval and juvenile tunas have led to an “operational taxonomic unit” gap in our understanding of tuna ecology. As a result, understanding the effects of the physical environment on fish behavior is critical for robust population assessments.
