Abstract:
What does it sound like to fall down a rabbit hole? This was not a question that concerned Lewis Carroll when he wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but it has challenged the many individuals who have adapted his story for film, ballet, video games, and other multimedia formats since its creation. In recent decades, the proliferation of adaptations across a variety of new media has offered scholars a renewed opportunity to more closely examine this and other critical issues raised when considering the relationships between adapted texts and their original sources. This dissertation argues for a greater critical emphasis on the aurality of adaptation by examining the narrative potential of sound in adaptations across a variety of media forms. Despite scholarship on adaptations and comparable studies contemplating sound in adapted texts, these two streams of scholarly inquiry have largely remained isolated within adaptation studies and musicology, respectively. Through this dissertation, I provide an examination of sound’s capacity to shape, nuance, or subvert the other parts of a multimedia adaptation, thus bridging these disciplinary discussions. This dissertation balances a broad survey of Alice adaptations with the highly focused examination of two case studies: Christopher Wheeldon’s ballet, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Tim Burton’s film, Alice in Wonderland. The survey demonstrates a model for analyzing the aurality of adaptation across media forms, while the case studies provide an in-depth examination of aural adaptation in relation to specific media forms. The analysis undertaken focuses on the intersection of narrative, sound, and adaptation, revealing complex and multifaceted relationships. In this work, I merge score analysis with visual and narrative analyses, using films or filmed versions of stage productions as the primary source materials. From this rigorous comparative analysis, trends in musical interpretation emerge, indicating some of the prevailing expectations concerning Alice and its aural adaptations.

Cette thèse consiste en l’analyse du jeu dans les deux œuvres littéraires majeures de Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland et Through the Looking-Glass, œuvres qui accordent la part belle au jeu, tant au niveau diégétique, narratologique que stylistique et linguistique. Il en ressort qu’une tension entre liberté et règle (entre paidia, l’expression impulsive d’un instinct de jeu, et ludus, le besoin de créer des règles et de s’y plier, pour utiliser les termes de Caillois) traverse les Alice. L’étude des jeux et jouets, des macro- et micro-structures, du style et des intertextes, permet d’affirmer que ces deux volumes sont résolument ludiques, car ils reposent sur une légaliberté, une liberté dans et par une légalité (Duflo). Ils jouent avec et contre les attentes, la langue et les connaissances du lecteur de sens commun. Toutefois, dans le même temps, le champ d’action du lecteur virtuel est considérablement restreint : ses facultés d’idéation sont orientées par l’imbrication du texte et des illustrations, et sa participation à la construction du texte carrollien se borne à compléter les « blancs » textuels, tel que Eco les définit, c’est-à-dire à faire ressurgir les déjà-dits qui ont été effacés. Les œuvres carrolliennes sont ainsi caractérisées par ce paradoxe : alors que la diégèse et l’économie textuelle semblent promouvoir le jeu, le rôle du Lecteur Modèle prévu par le texte est extrêmement réduit. Cependant, il est possible pour le lecteur réel, interpellé par le texte carrollien et son Auteur, d’endosser le rôle de Lecteur Imposteur, de les contre-interpeller, et de devenir, par ce processus de subjectivation, un lecteur pleinement joueur. Il s’avère alors que la légaliberté permet non seulement de saisir l’esthétique du jeu, mais aussi la formation des sujets (personnages, auteurs, lecteurs) à l’œuvre dans les Alice
This thesis consists in an analysis of play and game(s) in Lewis Carroll’s two major literary works, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, in which diegetic, narratological, stylistic and linguistic games play a significant part. It shows that a tension is at work throughout the Alice books, between freedom and rules (between paidia, the impulsive manifestation of a play instinct, and ludus, the need to invent rules and to abide by them, to state this in Caillois’s terms). The study of games and toys, of the macro- and micro-structures, of the style and the intertexts reveals the playfulness of these texts, as they rely on “legafreedom”, freedom in, and made possible by legality (Duflo). They play with and against the reader’s commonsensical expectations, language and knowledge. Yet, at the same time, the virtual reader’s playing field is considerably limited: his or her faculties of ideation are directed by the interweaving of text and illustrations, and his or her participation (involvement?) in constructing the Carrollian text is restricted to filling in the textual “blanks,” as defined by Eco, i.e. making the “already said” that has been erased reappear. Carroll’s works are, therefore, characterized by this paradoxical idea: while the diegesis and the textual economy seem to promote play, the role of the Model Reader as mapped out by the text is extremely circumscribed. However, the real reader, interpellated by the Carrollian text and its Author, can take on the role of the Impostor Reader, counter-interpellate them, and become, thanks to this process of subjectification, a consummate playing reader. As such, “legafreedom” makes it possible to understand not only the aesthetics of play, but also the formation of subjects (characters, authors, readers) in the Alice books

As Aventuras de Alice no País das Maravilhas e Através do Espelho e o que Alice Encontrou Lá , os livros mais famosos de Lewis Carroll, foram amplamente traduzidos intersemióticamente nos últimos 150 anos. Uma enorme quantidade de ilustrações, peças, balés, músicas, filmes, programas de TV e outros foram feitos por artistas conceituados e menos conhecidos. Não existe, no entanto, uma abordagem sistemática desse fenômeo no campo específico da intermidialidade e da tradução intersemiótica. Dois exemplos notáveis servirão para análise: uma famosa série de TV de Jim Henson, The Muppet Show , que foi ao ar entre 1976 e 1981, estrelando fantoches e uma pessoa convidada em que um episódio da quinta temporada levou Brooke Shields interpretando Alice em 1980; e um filme de 1988 com uma mistura de stop motion e animação pelo muitas diretor tcheco vezes premiado, Jan Švankmajer, intitulado Neco z Alenky . Pretendemos aqui comparar essas duas traduções dos romances de Alice, em que os tradutores escolheram características do livro opostas entre si, porém ambas de importância fundamental para a fonte.
Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass And What Alice Found There , Lewis Carroll’s most famous books, have been widely intersemiotically translated throughout the last 150 years. A number of illustration, plays, ballets, songs, movies, TV shows and others was made by renowned and lesser known artists. There is not, however, a systematic approach of this phenomenon in a more strict field of analysis of intermediality and intersemiotic translations. Two notable examples will serve for analysis: a famous TV series by Jim Henson, The Muppet Show , aired from 1976 to 1981, featuring puppets and a human guest, in which an episode from the fifth season starred Brooke Shields playing Alice in 1980; and 1988 film with a blend of stop motion animation by multiple prize winner Czech director Jan Švankmajer, called Neco z Alenky . We intend to compare these translations of Alice’s novels, in which translators choose opposingly distinct characteristics of the books, but both of fundamental importance to the source.

The works of Lewis Carroll show an abiding interest on the part of the author in the relationship between education, language and authority. In particular, the Alices are the story of a young girl who must learn to deal with a variety of characters in dream-worlds where the power of language reigns. It is therefore necessary for Alice to learn how language is used for authoritarian purposes and to discover ways of defending herself against it. It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate, in many cases for the first time, the ways in which Alice is able to find "spaces" in language where authority breaks down, places where the fundamental nature of language is unable to support authoritarian use. In this way, "space" will become both a metaphor and a figurative model for Alice's growing knowledge of and resistance to authority.

Allo stesso tempo si cerca di fornire una panoramica delle soluzioni adottate nelle versioni di maggior successo pubblicate in Italia negli ultimi tempi, a partire dal 2010. Si partirà da un primo capitolo di carattere generale e contestualizzazione storico-biografica, per poi analizzare le particolarità del testo da un punto di vista linguistico nel secondo capitolo e concludere, nel terzo capitolo, con il confronto tra le scelte traduttive dei brani di maggior difficoltà all'interno delle versioni selezionate.

Abstract:
In the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Alice, the protagonist, is supposed to be seven years of age. However, the reader can perceive her as older than that and get the impression that she has entered adolescence. Alice vacillates between being a child and striving to act like an adult in her various encounters in Wonderland. In this essay, I will examine Alice’s emotional and intellectual phases in her search for identity, and show the different levels according to developmental theory. Erik Erikson’s, Jean Piaget’s and John Dewey’s research together with other studies form the theoretical framework of this paper. I will demonstrate that while the book does not trace her development as such (i.e. it is not a typical Bildungsroman), it nevertheless highlights a child’s development by juxtaposing different developmental stages. The scientific and realistic functions of developmental theory may at first seem haphazard in the analysis of a literary character in a fantasy world. But, this essay illustrates Carroll’s professional familiarity with his child protagonist through the logic and consistency of his depiction of Alice.  Alice’s adventures in Wonderland reflect the child-adult conflict of Alice on her inner quest for identity. To her the first steps into adulthood, ie. adolescence, include not only psychological growth as in maturity but also physical growth; to grow is to grow up. Her dramatic alterations in size in Wonderland cause great turmoil and confusion as she senses an obligation to adapt her behavior.  Lewis Carroll knew his child protagonist well.

Cette étude des influences de l'Alice de Lewis Carroll dans la littérature française explore la dimension proprement onirique des aventures d'Alice et dégage les motifs de l'imaginaire carrollien issus du travail de condensation du rêve qui inspirèrent les écrivains français dès le début du 20ème siècle. La cruauté fantasmatique de l'auteur à l'égard de l'enfant se développe, en France, à travers la métaphore animale conçue comme l'incarnation de pulsions agressives dominées par le cannibalisme. La traversée du miroir hante la poésie de Jean Cocteau et de Louis Aragon dans une version indissociable du roman des origines. Le miroir représente l'envers poétique faisant intrusion dans le champ du réel quand il n'est pas une métaphore de la disparition et de la mort. Alice donne naissance à d'autres figures subordonnées à la dimension cauchemardesque incestueuse du récit original. Ses avatars oscillent entre la représentation de la petite fille captée par le fantasme sadique, celle de l'enfant érotisé par le regard de l'homme et celle libérée de toute emprise par la fantaisie poétique. The study of the influence of Lewis Carroll's Alice on French literature explores the purely dreamlike dimension of Alice's adventures and reveals recurrent themes in Carroll's imaginative world. These themes derive from the dream condensation process which inspired French writers from the beginning of the 20th century. In France the author's imaginative crualty towards the child has developed via the metaphor of the animal seen as the incarnation of agressive urges, predominantly cannibalism. Going "through the looking-glass" is a recurring image in the poetry of Jean Cocteau and Louis Aragon. This theme is inseparable from the "roman des origines. " The mirror represents the poetic reverse side of reality which intrudes upon the real world. It is also a metaphor for disappearance and death. Alice is the precursor of other characters that are subject to the same incestuous, nightmarish dimension of the original story. These characters are variously the little girl who is a subject of sadistic fantasies, the child who is eroticized by a man's observation and the child who is freed from all constraints by poetic imagination. Alice prefigures the phenomenon of the child-woman

Adaptations cinématographiques d’Alice au pays des merveilles et De l’autre côté du miroir de Lewis Carroll: Analyse des transécritures de Walt Disney, Jan Švankmajer et Tim Burton observe comment trois versions cinématographiques différentes, provenant d’un même texte source, peuvent être singulières les unes par rapport aux autres. Le but de ce mémoire est d’analyser les transécritures de Walt Disney (1951), de Jan Švankmajer (1989) et de Tim Burton (2010) autant dans les changements narratifs que dans les ajouts faits par les réalisateurs qui personnalisent l’adaptation. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuierons sur la notion d’idée de Deleuze. Chacune des analyses est divisée selon: les idées de roman et de cinéma qui se « rencontrent », les ajouts et modifications des idées de roman, ainsi que les idées ayant été rejetés par l’adaptateur-cinéaste.

The goal of this essay is to analyze the adaptations of Walt Disney (1951), Jan Švankmajer (1989) and Tim Burton (2010) from the narrative choices to what directors added in order to personalize the adaptation. To do so, we rely on Deleuze’s notion of ideas. Every analyze is being divided by: the meeting of the novel’s ideas and the film’s ideas, by ideas that have been added or modified, and by ideas that were eliminated by the adaptor-filmmaker.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, as well as its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, have the reputation of being the most quoted and translated texts of all time, after the Bible and Shakespeare. The status of the Alice books as timeless classics is confirmed by the numerous translations and adaptations of the texts that have already been made and is still being made. In this study, a descriptive investigation of André P. Brink’s Afrikaans translation of Carroll’s classic children’s books is undertaken in order to investigate whether the translation is still suitable for Afrikaans readers today. Brink’s Afrikaans translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published in 1965, and his translation of Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There in 1968. Firstly, an overview of the most important theoretical contributions to translation studies since the nineteen-eighties is given to provide a foundation for the investigation and description of translations. Relevant terminology, such as adequacy and acceptability, will be explained. Emphasis will especially be placed on the interaction between the theoretical contributions, which will serve as a basis for the conclusion drawn regarding the suitability of the translation. The conclusion will be based on an application where the translation will be investigated. The translation is studied from a theoretical point of view on macrostructural as well as microstructural level. In the macrostructural analysis, references to the title, cover pages, illustrations, chapter titles, and the (in)visibility of the translator will be made. The microstructural analysis comprises an investigation of how Brink dealt with translation problems that arose during the particular translation. As a result of the investigation of the translation, conclusions can be drawn regarding the suitability of the translation for current readers. A recommendation on the possibility of a retranslation is also offered.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Lewis Carroll se klassieke kinderverhaal Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland en die opvolg Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, het die reputasie as die tekste wat, naas die Bybel en Shakespeare, die meeste aangehaal word en vertaal word van alle tekste. Die status van die Alice-verhale as tydlose, klassieke verhale word bevestig deur die verskeie vertalings en verwerkings daarvan wat reeds gedoen is en steeds onderneem word. In hierdie studie word ’n beskrywende ondersoek van André P. Brink se Afrikaanse vertaling van Carroll se verhale onderneem om vas te stel of die vertalings vir huidige lesers steeds gepas is. Brink se Afrikaanse vertaling van Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is reeds in 1965 gepubliseer en die vertaling van Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There in 1968. ’n Oorsig oor die vernaamste vertaalteoretiese bydraes sedert die tagtigerjare word eerstens gebied as gronding vir die bestudering en beskrywing van vertalings. Relevante terminologie, waaronder geskiktheid en aanvaarbaarheid, kom ook aan bod. Daar word veral klem gelê op die interaksie tussen die teoretiese bydraes, wat gesamentlik dien as ’n grondslag vir die gevolgtrekking wat gemaak word oor die gepastheid van die vertaling. Die oordeel oor die gepastheid, al dan nie, van die vertaling word gegrond op ’n toepassing waar die vertaling bestudeer word. Die vertaling word vanuit ’n vertaalteoretiese oogpunt op makro- sowel as mikrovlak bestudeer. Op makrovlak word daar onder andere verwys na die titel, voorblaaie, illustrasies, hoofstuktitels en die (on)sigbaarheid van die vertaler. Die bestudering van die vertaling op mikrovlak behels ’n ondersoek na Brink se hantering van vertaalprobleme wat in die betrokke vertaalsituasie ontstaan. Na aanleiding van die bestudering van die vertaling kan daar afleidings gemaak word oor die gepastheid daarvan vir huidige lesers en word ’n aanbeveling gemaak oor die moontlikheid van ’n hervertaling.

This research has as objective the multiple and varied ensemble constituted by the illustrations of Lewis Carroll s Alice in Wonderland and has as main objective the analysis of the relationship between verbal text and visual text that are established in them, trying to define what is illustration, which elements the illustrator uses in his works and what meaning effects it causes. We work with the hypothesis that the illustrator is a translator that operates in hisher own language. The research corpus consists of an ensemble of 10 editions of Alice in Wonderland, including the illustrations made by Lewis Carroll himself and by John Tenniel, who was the first and the most famous Alice illustrator after the author. The selection criterion privileges the classic English editions and the best translations to Portuguese of the integral text of Alice. The illustrations of the corpus have different styles and are a sample of different executions of the story and its characters. The methodology consists in bibliographical and documental research, the last one being the search of the referred Alice editions. The theoretical referential use the main authors to deal with intersemioticity, noticeably Roman Jakobson, Julio Plaza, Octavio Paz and Haroldo de Campos; specialists in English literature and Lewis Carroll, like Martin Gardner, Donald Rackin, Jenny Woolf and Morton N. Cohen, specialists in illustrations like Sophie Van der Linden, Martin Salisbury, Morag Styles, Maria Nikolajeva, Carole Scott e Ana Margarida Ramos. The relevance of this research to the area of Communication and Semiotics is in the study of the syncretism between verbal and visual texts, that here is being used to analyze a fundamental work
Esta pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo o conjunto múltiplo e variado constituído pelas ilustrações de Alice no país das maravilhas de Lewis Carroll e como objetivo principal a análise das relações entre o texto verbal e o texto imagético que aí se estabelecem. Busca-se responder o que é a ilustração, que elementos o ilustrador utiliza em seu trabalho e que efeitos de sentido ela desempenha. Trabalhamos com a hipótese de que o ilustrador é um tradutor que opera em língua própria. O corpus de pesquisa consiste em um conjunto selecionado de 10 edições de Alice no País das Maravilhas, incluindo as ilustrações do próprio Lewis Carroll e as de John Tenniel, que, após o autor, foi o primeiro e o mais famoso ilustrador da obra. O critério de seleção privilegia as edições inglesas clássicas e as melhores traduções do texto integral de Alice. As novas tecnologias de comunicação têm transformado sobremaneira o mundo em que vivemos, incluindo aí a cultura. Neste contexto, muito se discute sobre o futuro da literatura e dos livros, mas este estudo evita especular sobre a permanência ou não do objeto livro e prefere investigar as possibilidades da criação literária diante de novos suportes de leitura, em especial o iPad. Assim como outrora a invenção da imprensa forjou o romance e a popularização das revistas e jornais consolidou o conto moderno, investiga-se de que forma ferramentas próprias das novas tecnologias são utilizadas para a criação de textos literários diferentes do texto impresso, a chamada literatura digital. Para fazer essa comparação, foram usados os dois célebres romances de Lewis Carroll, Alice no País das Maravilhas e Através do Espelho e o que Alice Encontrou por lá, e duas versões da Atomic Antelope, de Chris Stephens, para iPad: Alice for iPad e Alice in New York. Ao final do estudo, que discute também a questão do fim do livro e da literatura, traçando um longo histórico da leitura e contextualizando o livro no que se chama de Era Digital, espera-se mostrar como as possibilidades de criação para plataformas digitais podem ir além do que hoje entendemos por livros, motivo pelo qual a permanência da literatura, independente do seu suporte, está assegurada.
New communication technologies have immensely changed the world in which we live, as well as its culture. Within such context, much has been discussed about the future of literature and books. This study avoided speculating about the persistence of books as physical objects, and, rather, investigated the possibilities of literary creation in face of the new reading media, particularly the iPad. As the invention of the press forged the novel, and the popular spread of magazines and newspapers consolidated modern short stories in the past, we currently investigate how new technological tools may be used to create literary texts, called digital literature, that are different from the print-based text. For this comparison, we used two renowned novels by Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, and two versions of the Atomic Antelope, by Chris Stephens, for iPad: Alice for iPad and Alice in New York. This study also discussed the possible demise of books and literature by outlining the long history of reading that has set the context for books in the Digital Era; Therefore, it demonstrated that the possibilities of literary creation for digital platforms may go beyond what we understand to be books today, which is why the persistence of literature, regardless of what medium it uses, is ensured.

L'exploration des deux œuvres littéraires "Alice au pays des merveilles" et "De l'autre côté du miroir" de Lewis Carroll, débouche dans cette recherche sur une exploitation plastique riche et variée à l'image d'Alice. En suivant cette petite fille dans sa traversée à travers le miroir ou dans sa descente dans le terrier du lapin, on découvre l'existence d'une contiguïté secrète entre la réalité et le monde merveilleux, deux univers qui germent l'un dans l'autre et qui se reflètent. Cette aventure se base sur le passage dans ses divers aspects qui s'avère à l'origine des différents rapports établis avec l'Autre, l'espace et le temps. Une série de problématiques, toutes liées à l'idée mentale de l'identité et de son rapport à l'altérité, furent soulevées développant les thèmes de limites et de frontière dans la première partie, du regard dans la deuxième et la féminité dans la troisième. Dans cette traversée artistique et poétique, le corps au féminin, dévoile ses devenirs et les concrétions qui le travaillent. Le devenir femme s'avère alors un acte de création. L'art serait-il un exercice pour apprendre à voir et à appréhender l'Autre et ce qui nous entoure en dehors des restrictions de la réalité ?

La littérature pour la jeunesse connaît un essor extraordinaire depuis une vingtaine d'années, notamment grâce à des œuvres transcendant les catégories littéraires. Des récits-fleuves battent des records de vente, tels "His Dark Materials" de Philip Pullman (1995-2000). Cet engouement pour la lecture chez les enfants est un phénomène qui date de la naissance de la littérature pour la jeunesse, en 1865 avec la publication d'"Alice au pays des merveilles" de Lewis Carroll. En 1937, "Le hobbit" de J. R. R. Tolkien créa un nouveau genre, la "Fantasy", et rencontra un succès international. Dans une période où l'on s'interroge de plus en plus sur les compétences et l'appétit de lecture des enfants, la destinée de ces récits paraît singulière. Comment ont-ils, chacun à leur époque, réussi à attirer un jeune public aussi nombreux ? Quels sont les procédés narratologiques et esthétiques mis en place par les auteurs ? Quelles compétences leur lecteur peu expérimenté doit-il mettre en œuvre pour parvenir à faire du sens en cours de lecture ? Comment ces textes sucitent-ils et mettent-ils en œuvre ces compétences ? Enfin, après avoir été didactique pendant des siècles, la littérature pour la jeunesse est devenue pédagogique, mais elle est restée, hier comme aujourd'hui, un vecteur privilégié de valeurs pas nécessairement doxiques. Les positions axiologiques présentes dans chaque récit révèlent l'image qu'une société se fait des enfants et la place qu'elle leur accorde. A travers la philosophie éducative en filigrane derrière la présence de l'enfant personnage et dans la description en négatif que nous offre chaque récit de l'enfant lecteur se définit le portrait d'une société à une époque donnée
For about twenty years, children's literature has enjoyed an extraordinary boom, particularly thanks to crossover books which bridge the gap between adults and teenagers. Some sagas have become best-sellers, like "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman (1995-2000). Since the birth of children's literature in 1865 with the publication of "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll, young readers have been infatuated with some narratives. In 1937, Tolkien created a new genre, Fantasy, with "The Hobbit", which became successful worlwide. At a time when we are questioning children's reading skills - as well as their desire to read - the destiny of these novels seems quite remarkable. How have they managed to appeal to so many young readers for years ? What are the narratological and aesthetic devices used by their authors ? What skills are inexperienced readers supposed to use in order to understand the meaning of a text while reading it ? How do such texts bring out and implement these reading skills ? Moreover, after being didactic for centuries, children's literature has become pedagogical, but has always remained an ideal way to transmit values which are not necessarily doxic. The axiological positions in each narrative reveal the idea a society gets of its children and the importance it gives them. Through the educational philosophy embodied in the presence of child characters and the indirect description of the child reader given by each text, we can delineate the portrait of a society at a given time

Abstract:
This research presents a synchronic and a diachronic investigation of six Italian translations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Alice) across a century (1872-1988). This work draws on Antoine Berman's method for the analysis of literary translations and integrates it with interdisciplinary theoretical approaches focused on the investigation of children's literature in translation. The premises of children's literature studies, translation studies, and retranslation studies underpin the analytical framework that supports the textual analysis. The examination focuses in particular on the translation strategies used to convey in Italian the culture-specific references that contribute to fashion the identity of Alice and her Wonderland. The research operates on two different levels. Firstly, it presents a synchronic investigation concerned with a close reading and analysis of each translation in linguistic and textual terms. The elements examined in the detailed survey offer the opportunity to retrace the translators' unique understanding of Alice and discuss how it was conveyed to the Italian readers. Secondly, it proposes a diachronic investigation comparing, from a chronological perspective, the translation solutions previously identified and examines how the concepts of the image of the child and dual readership have evolved in the Italian translations. The purpose of the study is to investigate the translation strategies to convey Alice in Italian, observe the patterns that emerge from the analysis of the texts and advance explanatory hypotheses that would account for the changes in the translators' understanding of Carroll's novel over time. The close reading the research centres on aims to provide a meticulous collection of the translation solutions found in the texts; these are not confined to particular passages of the book but are found throughout it, thus offering support for future analysis on the translations of Alice. Finally, this research also aims to contribute to the analysis of children's literature in translation by providing an analytical framework able to support the investigation of different aspects of books for children in translation in other languages other than Italian.

Entitled « Childhood's Geographies in Alice'sAdventures in Wonderland [1865] by Lewis Carroll, Le Avventure di Pinocchio [1883] by Carlo Collodi, Peter Pan [1911] by James Matthew Barrie and Le Petit Prince [1943] by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry », this thesis investigates the concepts of space, place, and the world of childhood, by focusing on the treatment of space. We approach these four works in children's literature, not from the perspective of the character, but rather from that of the relationship between the geography developed through the narration, and the enduring popularity of the works. Although childhood fancy seems to be at the principle of the creation of worlds, the ephemeral materialization in space can be named the force behind the elaboration of mythical places. By putting in relation such notions as the children's illusion, the space of the fantastic, the space of the marvelous, the spatialization of children's desire and the de-materialization of territory by memory and tale, the hypotheses formulated in this thesis find their place among the studies on fantasy literature, and put the spatialization of fancy at the core of the discussion

Les narrations de jeunesse ont souvent pour thème le développement d’un jeune protagoniste ; elles racontent alors des expériences transformatrices qui constituent pour les petits héros autant de moments de passage, d’initiations. L’initiation jouait autrefois un rôle très important dans la vie humaine, marquant un passage d’âge socialement reconnu par la communauté toute entière. Toutefois, l’histoire de la société occidentale a vu progressivement disparaître ces moments de passage officiels, comme déjà en 1956 Mircea Eliade l’annonçait. Une fois l’initiation disparue, une compensation au niveau de la vie intérieure s’est rendue nécessaire, et le rêve apparaît un des lieux et des moments possibles pour cette compensation. Ainsi, à partir de Alice in Wonderland et The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, les fictions de jeunesse contemporaines ont souvent exploré le potentiel initiatique du rêve, qui fournit aux protagonistes une expérience liminaire marquant un avant et un après dans leurs vies. Dans nombreux romans, le protagoniste vit un rêve initiatique qui le conduit à travers un chemin de mort et de résurrection symboliques, et duquel il se réveille renouvelé. Cette thèse se propose donc de questionner le rêve en tant que seuil entre deux formes d’existence et catalyseur du passage d’âge dans les narrations de jeunesse européennes au XXIe siècle
Youth fiction often focus on the development of a young hero. Such stories tell us about transformative experiences which work as initiations. Initiation was once a very important moment in human life, marking a passage which was recognized by the community as a whole. However, in the history of Western society official rites of passage has gradually disappeared, as already in 1956 Mircea Eliade announced it. Since then, a compensation for the inner life has become necessary, and the dream has become one of the possible places and times for this compensation. Thus, from Alice in Wonderland and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, contemporary youth fiction has often explored the initiatory potential of dreams, which provides the protagonists with an introductory experience marking a turning point in their lives. In many novels, the protagonist lives an initiatory dream that leads him through a path of symbolic death and resurrection, from which he/she wakes up renewed. This thesis proposes to question the dream as a threshold between two forms of existence and a catalyst for initiation in contemporary European youth literature

The goal of the present thesis is a corpus stylistic analysis of Alice in Wonderland (1865), and it presents the possibilities of using corpus methods in the study of literary texts. In the theoretical part, the thesis is concerned with an explanation of the words norm, foregrounding, deviance and prominence (Leech, 2008), which are key terms in stylistics. The text then focuses in detail on various concerns connected to keywords and clusters, which are investigated later on in the theoretical part. The relation of keywords to the reference corpus and aspects of the length and frequency of occurrence of clusters are analyzed. An important element in a corpus-based analysis is that it is supposed to decrease bias, as the researcher studies statistically based significant markers of the text. The next part of the thesis focuses on the position of Alice in Wonderland between other members of the children's literature of the Golden Age (Knowles & Malmkjaer, 1995), and the role of nonsense and non-observance of pragmatic principles of interaction in the text. The reference corpora are described and primary hypotheses stated. In the practical part, keywords are studied first. They are divided into part of speech categories and interpreted from the point of view of their role and mutual relations in the text....

The emotive connotations of diminutives in English are a source of controversy among scholars, while the Slavic languages of Polish and Russian are considered ‘diminutive-rich’ with diminutives that convey diverse nuances. Thus, the translation of diminutives between English and Slavic languages has either been portrayed as difficult or has been ignored altogether. However, an analysis of Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and several of its translations into Polish and Russian shows that English has many diminutives, some of which are ‘untranslatable’, while many diminutives can be easily translated. Yet, the strong emphasis on diminutives in Polish and Russian produces diminutives in the translations that do not appear in the original text and are not typical of English. What becomes evident is that the obstacles in translating various diminutive constructions provoke the question: What are the semantic-pragmatic differences between English and Polish/Russian diminutives and how do these differences affect translation?

The purpose of my dissertation is to conduct an intertextual study of two fantasy texts — Alice in Wonderland by Victorian author Lewis Carroll, and Stardust by postmodern fantasy author Neil Gaiman — and their filmic re-visionings by Tim Burton and Matthew Vaughn respectively. In scrutinising these texts, drawing on insights from feminist, children’s literature and intertextual theorists, the actions of ‘growing up’ and ‘falling down’ are shown to be indicative of a paradoxical becoming of the text’s central female protagonists, Alice and Yvaine. The social mechanisms of the Victorian age that educate the girl-child into becoming accepting of their domestic roles ultimately alienate her from her true state of being. While she may garner some sense of importance within the imaginary realms of fantasy narratives, as these female protagonists demonstrate, she is reduced to the position of submissive in reality – in ‘growing up’, she must assume a ‘fallen down’ state in relation to the male.

People too often dismiss it as purely escapist reading, a means to escape from the monotony of everyday realism by delving into the realms of fantasy. Many critics propose that it operates on more than one level and I would have to agree - it is a pioneer of children's literature as well as a product and critique of the Victorian age. It is a story that has captured the world's imagination, with vivid characters and exciting adventures. The sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, although not as well known, equally offers an insight into the late nineteenth-century. I intend to explore the many layers found in these stories, and hope to expose them as being more than mere narratives, but as pieces of literature that thrive because they are so cleverly constructed Perhaps also their success lies in that they deal with the universal theme (for children and adults alike) of making sense of the seemingly nonsensical aspects of life and society. The stories, as well as the strange characters and happenings, are reminiscent of the Absurdist genre in drama, in which the objective is to turn the world upside down, so to speak, in order to understand people and society. My dissertation will begin by exploring the literary trends of children's books prior to 1865, in other words, before Alice in Wonderland was published. I intend to present an overview of Victorian and pre-Victorian children's fiction, tracing the development of the story for teaching and religious instruction, up until the time when the story was liberated to be simply the vehicle for pleasurable recreational purposes. Thus my opening chapter is an exploration of the didactic children's literature that dominated the early nineteenth century, examining the educationalists that helped expand the genre of children's literature. Next, I will include a brief biography of Lewis Carroll. It is important to my overall theme in that a biography sums up, in one human centre, the forces at play in Victorian sensibility. As a modern audience, we seem to seize upon the idea of his 'character', desperately attempting to understand what motivated him to write such tour de force stories. The interest for me at this point is to examine how academics have portrayed Carroll's 'character'. The motive behind this section is to beg the question of whether his complex personality affects our reading of the texts, or whether they can be seen as entirely separate from a life to which some scandal has been attributed. In the remainder of my dissertation, I shall focus on how the texts are a reflection of a typical Victorian child's experiences, and discuss how Alice 'grows' as a character, and what she reveals about her society in the process of discovering how she should define herself. Alice is the vehicle for Carroll's subversive commentary about his society, and her experiences in Wonderland and Looking-Glass land are often rooted in the undermining of conventional behaviour and traditions. Lastly, I will examine Carroll's stylistic organization of the narratives, paying particular attention to his treatment of time, dreams and language in the texts. I will discuss what his intentions are in creating 'nonsense that makes sense', as well as what this 'nonsense' discloses about the society he lived in and the values he seems to object to.

O estudo do meme possibilita não só um melhor entendimento dos processos culturais, mas também do ADN cultural. Neste sentido, o objetivo desta investigação consiste no estudo do meme através da análise do discurso textual e visual, centrando-se na identidade cultural de Alice — personagem de Lewis Carroll. Começamos por delimitar conceitos essenciais, como meme, memória, signo, entre outros. De seguida, exploramos as relações entre o texto e a imagem através das similitude e imitação, utilizando o mito e o conto como elementos de compreensão dessas relações. O nosso trabalho culmina com Alice no País das Maravilhas como estudo de caso. Aqui exploramos o percurso do meme de Alice em diferentes momentos e perspetivas, e refletimos sobre a aplicação do meme à comunicação.
The study of the meme provides, not only a better understanding of the cultural processes, but also of its cultural DNA. The dissertation aims at studying the meme through the analysis of textual and visual discourse, focusing on the cultural identity of Alice, Lewis Carrol’s well known character. We begin by setting out essential concepts such as meme, memory, sign, among others. Then we explore the relations between the text and the image through similarity and imitation, using the myth and the tale as elements for understanding those relations. Our work culminates with Alice in Wonderland as case study, exploring the way Alice’s meme develops at different times and perspectives. We also reflect on the application of the meme to communication.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis are interpretations and overinterpretatios of Lewis Carroll's work Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. That includes interpretations based on autor's life and the historical period which he lived in, psychoanalytic, feministic and psychedelic interpretations and those which perceive Alice's story as a game. In this thesis there are also mentioned adaptations based on motives of both novels. We use a theory of interpretation of Umberto Eco to distinguish between these interpretations. This theory is used in our own analysis in which we focus on crucial aspects. That means the behaviour of the main character and vice versa, identity of Alice, context, genre and the model reader of the naration. We also focus on these aspects in the selected interpretations. The emphasis is put on the proces of dialectics between the text and its reader which these interpretations and overinterpretations come from. We also try to see it from the point of view of the aproach to the text. That is why this case study reveals a problem of remake and adaptation.
