Abstract The Secord World War was a conflict which many British people feared might happen, but they strongly supported the efforts of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to seek a peaceful resolution of tensions with Germany over disputes in Continental Europe. Baptists in Scotland shared these concerns of their fellow citizens, but equally supported the declaration of war in 1939 after the German invasion of Poland. They saw the conflict as a struggle for spiritual values and were as concerned about winning the peace that followed as well as the war. During the years 1939 to 1945 they recommi

Dissenters in the long nineteenth century believed that they were on the right side of history. This chapter argues that the involvement of evangelical Nonconformists in politics was primarily driven by a coherent worldview derived from a Congregationalist understanding of salvation and the gathered nature of the church. That favoured a preference for voluntarism and a commitment to religious equality for all. Although Whig governments responded to the rising electoral clout of Dissenters after 1832 by meeting Dissenting grievances, both they and the Conservatives retained an Erastian approach

Unitarianism and Presbyterian Dissent had a complex relationship in the nineteenth century. Neither English Unitarians nor their Presbyterian cousins grew much if at all in the nineteenth century, but elsewhere in the United Kingdom the picture was different. While Unitarians failed to prosper, Presbyterian Dissenting numbers held up in Wales and Ireland and increased in Scotland thanks to the Disruption of the Church of Scotland. Unitarians were never sure whether they would benefit from demarcating themselves from Presbyterians as a denomination. Though they formed the British and Foreign Un

The valuable work performed by Conservative women at grass roots has been acknowledged in the scholarship, as have the strategies developed by the party to mobilise women as both party workers and voters. Much less attention has been conferred on those Conservative women who became virtual national celebrities. By the late 1930s the two women Conserv

Abstract The connection of William Shakespeare’s company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, with Scotland began before King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. That might explain why a play about a Scottish prince was written. There is evidence that two independent pieces about Macbeth were circulating around London at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The first record of the Tragedie of Macbeth is by Simon Forman in 1611 although the first print of the play was made after Shakespeare’s death in the First Folio. There remains much that is unknown about Macbeth the person and

Oral cancer is one of the few conditions that dental professionals may encounter within their surgeries that can be fatal. It is therefore essential that members of the dental team understand the epidemiology and natural history of the condition and possible options for prevention, screening, and treatment. From a public health perspective, oral cancer presents many interesting challenges. First, is the condition a public health problem? In this chapter the epidemiology of oral cancer will be reviewed to highlight the extent, trends, and impact of the condition. Second, what options exist to p
