Abstract:

Hydrocarbon spills have occurred on Antarctic soils where fuel oils are utilized, moved or stored. We investigated the effects of hydrocarbon spills on soil temperature and moisture regimes by comparing the properties of existing oil contaminated sites with those of nearby, uncontaminated, control sites at Scott Base, the old Marble Point camp, and Bull Pass in the Wright Valley. Hydrocarbon levels were elevated in fuel-contaminated samples. Climate stations were installed at all three locations in both contaminated and control sites. In summer at Scott Base and Marble Point the mean weekly maximum near surface (2 cm and 5 cm depth) soil temperatures were warmer (P<0.05), sometimes by more than 10°C, at the contaminated site than the control sites. At Bull Pass there were no statistically significant differences in near-surface soil temperatures between contaminated and control soils. At the Scott Base and Marble Point sites soil albedo was lower, and hydrophobicity was higher, in the contaminated soils than the controls. The higher temperatures at the Scott Base and Marble Point hydrocarbon contaminated sites are attributed to the decreased surface albedo due to soil surface darkening by hydrocarbons. There were no noteworthy differences in moisture retention between contaminated and control sites.

Abstract:

ABSTRACTCaptain Scott has been criticised for indecisiveness and for not making use of the dog teams for his own relief in his Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913). This essay will demonstrate how a mistake made in Roland Huntford's double biography of Scott and Amundsen in 1979, repeated in polar writing by various authors until the present day, has maligned Scott's reputation. In fact, Scott left appropriate written orders in October 1911 for the polar party's relief by the dog teams, orders that were not subsequently implemented by the men at base. A re-examination of the actions and roles of two expedition members in particular, Lieutenant E.R.G.R. Evans and Surgeon Edward Atkinson, suggests strongly that misjudgements back at Cape Evans led to the failure of the mission to rescue Scott and his polar party. In this account all distances are in geographical miles.

Abstract:

Este artigo discute alguns aspectos da incorporação do âmbito histórico no romance a partir de um breve exame da obra The Antiquary (1816), de Walter Scott. Para isso, propõe-se um recorte histórico-temático que assume, por um lado, a permanência fragmentada da Retórica na Europa do século XVIII e de toda uma tradição de subgêneros narrativos vinculados a ela; e, por outro, um crescente mercado de bens culturais a que se vinculam noções como “originalidade”, “propriedade intelectual”, “autoria/autoridade”, entre outras (Cf. WATT, 2007, p. 15; HANSEN, 2008, p. 213). Relendo a clássica noção lukacsiana da “natureza descontínuo-heterogênea” do romance (LUKÁCS, 2000, p. 101), propõe-se aqui que o protagonismo do antiquário na obra de Scott logra articular passado e presente por um viés intencionalmente paradoxal, figurando o perspectivismo histórico que é a base do romance moderno. Abstract:

A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo observar o comportamento de tradutores diferentes em face de fragmentos (re)aproveitados e semelhantes extraídos de duas obras de Clarice Lispector. Outro objetivo é verificar as escolhas desses tradutores frente a dois vocábulos recorrentes da autora: silêncio e olhos. Temos como arcabouço teórico os Estudos da Tradução baseados em corpus (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2004; estudos sobre normalização (SCOTT, 1998) a Linguística de Corpus (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004) e a fortuna crítica da autora (NUNES, 1995; SÁ, 2000). Como procedimento metodológico, a pesquisa foi realizada por meio de uma combinação de investigações semimanuais e computadorizadas. Com base em Scott (1998), examinamos a tradução dos vocábulos selecionados em relação à normalização. Os resultados finais apontam para tendência à normalização por parte de ambos os tradutores em pauta.

Os textos sobre a globalização costumam pintar um mundo totalmente dominado pelo fluxo do capital global, que nega a grandes setores da humanidade um papel na divisão internacional do trabalho. Passando dessa análise econômica à política e à cultural, alguns teóricos concluem que todo o sentido evaporou dos contextos locais, deixando os habitantes isolados, incapazes de articular suas próprias alternativas às agendas globais. No entanto, um trabalho de campo com um movimento de mulheres rurais brasileiras em um desses lugares "estruturalmente irrelevantes" encontra uma outra face da globalização, com efeitos potencialmente positivos. Essas ativistas locais criam sentidos numa rede transnacional de relações político-culturais que traz benefícios e riscos ao movimento delas. Ali, as mulheres rurais se envolvem com uma gama de militantes feministas, de localizações diversas, em relações constituídas tanto pelo poder quanto pela solidariedade. Elas defendem sua autonomia em relação às imposições dos financiadores internacionais, negociam recursos políticos com feministas brasileiras, apropriam-se dos discursos feministas transnacionais e os transformam. Nesse processo, as mulheres rurais se utilizam de seus próprios recursos, com base exatamente no caráter local do movimento, caráter cujo desaparecimento é lamentado pelos teóricos da globalização.

AbstractThe liquid soil water contents in the seasonally thawed layer (active layer) were characterized from seven soil climate monitoring sites - four coastal sites from south to north (Minna Bluff, Scott Base, Marble Point and Granite Harbour), and inland sites from low to high altitude (Wright Valley, Victoria Valley and Mount Fleming). Mean water contents ranged from 0.013 m3 m-3 near the surface at Victoria Valley to 0.33 m3 m-3 near the ice-cemented layer at Granite Harbour. The coastal sites have greater soil water contents than the McMurdo Dry Valley and Mount Fleming sites, and moisture contents increase with depth in the active layer. The Wright Valley site receives very little infiltration from snowmelt, with none in most years. All other sites, except Mount Fleming, received between one and four wetting events per summer, and infiltrated water moved to greater depths (≈ 10–25 cm). The Scott Base and Granite Harbour sites are on sloping ground and receive a subsurface flow of water along the ice-cemented permafrost. Our findings indicate that water contents are low with very little recharge, are greatly influenced by the local microclimate and topography, and show no significant increasing or decreasing trend over 10 years of monitoring.

The relative realisability toposes introduced by Awodey, Birkedal and Scott in Awodey et al. (2002) satisfy a universal property involving regular functors to other categories. We use this universal property to define what relative realisability categories are when they are based on categories other than the topos of sets. This paper explains the property and gives a construction for relative realisability categories that works for arbitrary base Heyting categories. The universal property also provides some new geometric morphisms to relative realisability toposes.

<p>Este artículo comienza por presentar una crítica de la secularización en base a los argumentos de Joan Wallach Scott en su libro <em>Sex and Secularism</em>. Aquí, la intelectual y feminista realiza una crítica de este proceso como un discurso de poder que no corresponde con los hechos históricos; más allá, argumenta que la igualdad de los sexos no está en la base del proceso de secularización. Scott muestra que este discurso está relacionado a un pensamiento dicotómico que, hoy en día, ha generado la dicotomía “igualdad de los sexos y libertad sexual (occidentales)” versus “Islam”. Esta dicotomía, basada en la imagen superioridad/inferioridad, sustenta objetivos geopolíticos vinculados a la colonización de las periferias y está, por lo tanto, asociado al discurso de las “misiones” coloniales y a su continuidad. En la segunda parte de este artículo, presento el pensamiento descolonial de Arzu Merali, Houria Bouteldja y Sirin Adlbi Sibai, quienes desde el contexto de sociedades arabo-musulmanas dentro del Norte Global, expresan una crítica hacia el feminismo occidental (blanco) y por ende hacia la secularización. Se trata de una crítica que coincide en varios puntos nodales con la de Scott. El objetivo de este artículo es presentar convergencias entre una voz feminista crítica del campo académico occidental - que ha dado un giro importante - y voces de mujeres que han sido sistemáticamente silenciadas por la academia occidentalizada. Más allá de la crítica de la secularización desde dentro del campo académico occidental, este artículo busca mostrar alternativas desde las periferias globales que no ven al discurso de la secularización como una salida de la opresión. Los puntos de convergencia entre el feminismo crítico y las voces de pensadoras musulmanas muestran a la secularización como un proceso cuya fuerza ideológica e historicidad deben analizarse y cuestionarse a fondo para proponer nuevas alternativas de diálogos más allá de las misiones de la cristiandad imperial y/o o su vertiente teológica secularizada.</p>

O objetivo deste trabalho é refletir sobre os discursos em torno da personagem transexual Mia e o seu processo de entrada, saída e desconstrução de um discurso heteronormativo que sempre a cerca, a partir de suas relações com os outros personagens da trama. Para tanto, tomamos como base as contribuições de Butler (2016), Lauretis (1994) e Scott (2005) para as discussões de gênero e os estudos de Foucault (2015) para a construção de uma base crítica de análise dos discursos dos personagens da série.

Alp makes some factual corrections regarding the ‘second obfuscation’ and ‘third obfuscation’ identified in the article. Regarding the ‘second obfuscation’, Alp is correct that the man-haulers (of the 3 X.S. supplies) had not yet returned from base on 17 January 1912, and would not return until 23 January. However, Alp's objection does not exonerate Meares. On 31 January 1912, expedition member Apsley Cherry-Garrard recorded that Meares supposedly had considered departing on the ‘second journey’, but had been assured by the man-haulers that there was already ‘plenty for all parties’ with ‘what they had left at 1 Ton’. The key date was 17 January 1912, when Meares still had time to either leave (for the ‘second journey’, a projected two-week depot run) or remain at base. Meares’ inaction on that date therefore cannot be excused by reassurance from the man-haulers on what they ‘had left’ at One Ton, as on 17 January the man-haulers had not yet returned to base to deliver such reassurance.

AbstractIn this paper, we study finite semiprimitive permutation groups, that is, groups in which each normal subgroup is transitive or semiregular. These groups have recently been investigated in terms of their abstract structure, in a similar way to the O'Nan–Scott Theorem for primitive groups. Our goal here is to explore aspects of such groups which may be useful in place of precise structural information. We give bounds on the order, base size, minimal degree, fixed point ratio, and chief length of an arbitrary finite semiprimitive group in terms of its degree. To establish these bounds, we study the structure of a finite semiprimitive group that induces the alternating or symmetric group on the set of orbits of an intransitive minimal normal subgroup.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar características morfológicas e produtivas de cultivares de batata doce cultivadas em Jataí-GO. Foram avaliados 26 clones, empregando o delineamento em blocos casualizados com 3 repetições. Foram avaliadas 13 características morfológicas, sendo dez da parte aérea e três das raízes. Com base nos dados morfológicos obtidos foi estimada a correlação fenotípica entre todos os caracteres. Foi construído um dendrograma para verificar a influência da morfologia no agrupamento entre os clones. As características produtivas avaliadas foram: produtividade comercial e não comercial de raízes. Os dados de produção foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Scott-Knott a 5% de probabilidade. Verificou-se que existe grande variabilidade fenotípica entre os clones avaliados, evidenciando uma significativa divergência com base nos descritores morfológicos. Em relação à produção, não houve diferença significativa para as produtividades comerciais dos clones avaliados.

Abstract:

O foco desta pesquisa é discutir como movimentos ultraconservadores, especialmente o Movimento Escola Sem Partido tem se organizado para a retirada de estudos e reflexões sobre gênero e sexualidade das escolas brasileiras. Com base na abordagem qualitativa da pesquisa, realizamos estudos teóricos e documentais, referenciados em autoras como: Scott (1995), Louro (2007) (2019), Paraiso (2016), Mattos (2018), e nos autores: Penna (2016a) (2016b), Seffner (2016) e Miguel (2017). Concluiu-se que movimentos ultraconservadores tem se utilizado de um certo pânico moral para subverter conceitos científicos atribuídos a gênero e sexualidade, propagando discursos conservadores nos meios sociais, criando uma cortina de fumaça, resultando na falácia chamada “ideologia de gênero”. Tal discurso tem sido utilizado como estratégia do MESP para impedir que o tema seja trabalhado e re-inserido em documentos educacionais como o Plano Nacional de Educação –PNE (2014-2024) e nas proposições de currículos escolares oficiais - Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC).

Abstract:

Este artigo tem o propósito de investigar a relação entre os estágios do ciclo de vida organizacional das EBTIs e a estrutura de ativos intangíveis destas empresas. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa exploratório-descritiva, com abordagem quantitativa dos dados, reunindo as empresas vinculadas às incubadoras de base tecnológica cearenses, com população de 64 empresas e amostra de 41. A identificação dos estágios do ciclo de vida e o exame da estrutura de ativos intangíveis foram realizados por meio das obras de Scott e Bruce (1987) e Sveiby (1998), respectivamente. Para avaliar a relação entre as variáveis, foi aplicado o teste estatístico MANOVA; e, para uma análise mais detalhada dos dados, aplicou-se ANOVAs univariadas. Os resultados demonstram que a estrutura de ativos intangíveis das EBTIs altera-se à medida que as organizações progridem em seus estágios do ciclo de vida organizacional.

This article aims to review the current literature base, and share findings of clinical experience from British and Norwegian first opinion and referral work in ovine Caesarean sections. It is not intended to replace existing excellent medicine and surgery texts describing Caesarean surgery (such as Scott, 2015 or Hendriksen and Baird, 2013) but to supplement these with additional information and to provide an updated review. We hope this article is particularly useful for those approaching their first Caesarean section in practice, and may stimulate further interest in capturing and sharing data held in first opinion practice. Part one looked at case selection, analgesia and surgery, while part two looks at the postoperative period and highlights the value of undertaking clinical audits of ovine medicines use and surgical procedures.

Résumé La littérature sur l’économique des pêcheries est relativement récente. Deux articles publiés à quelques mois d’intervalle, au milieu des années 50, fixèrent les grandes lignes de l’analyse. Le premier, de H.S. Gordon (1954), est considéré comme l’étude de base sur les modèles statiques des pêcheries. Le deuxième, de A.D. Scott (1955), est présenté comme étant celui qui fixa les fondements de l’analyse dynamique des pêcheries, analyse qui ne prit toutefois son essor qu’au début des années 70 sur la base des développements réalisés dans la théorie moderne du capital. Notre revue de la littérature ne se veut pas exhaustive. Elle tente plutôt de présenter l’origine du débat et les grands courants de pensée qui existent aujourd’hui. La réflexion tourne cependant toujours autour d’un nombre réduit de questions importantes. Il ressort de cette revue que la littérature, s’intéressant particulièrement au côté micro-économique de la gestion et de l’exploitation d’une ressource renouvelable, s’est principalement attardée à l’aspect théorique négligeant tant l’aspect empirique que macroéconomique.

Abstract:

Abstract. We present 20 years (1996–2015) of austral springtime measurements of chlorine monoxide (ClO) over Antarctica from the Chlorine Oxide Experiment (ChlOE1) ground-based millimeter wave spectrometer at Scott Base, Antarctica, as well 12 years (2004–2015) of ClO measurements from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS). From August onwards we observe a strong increase in lower stratospheric ClO, with a peak column amount usually occurring in early September. From mid-September onwards we observe a strong decrease in ClO. In order to study interannual differences, we focus on a 3-week period from 28 August to 17 September for each year and compare the average column ClO anomalies. These column ClO anomalies are shown to be highly correlated with the average ozone mass deficit for September and October of each year. We also show that anomalies in column ClO are strongly anti-correlated with 30 hPa temperature anomalies, both on a daily and an interannual timescale. Making use of this anti-correlation we calculate the linear dependence of the interannual variations in column ClO on interannual variations in temperature. By making use of this relationship, we can better estimate the underlying trend in the total chlorine (Cly = HCl + ClONO2 + HOCl + 2 × Cl2 + 2 × Cl2O2 + ClO + Cl). The resultant trends in Cly, which determine the long-term trend in ClO, are estimated to be −0.5 ± 0.2, −1.4 ± 0.9, and −0.6 ± 0.4 % year−1, for zonal MLS, Scott Base MLS (both 2004–2015), and ChlOE (1996–2015) respectively. These trends are within 1σ of trends in stratospheric Cly previously found at other latitudes. The decrease in ClO is consistent with the trend expected from regulations enacted under the Montreal Protocol.

Teniendo en cuenta los planteamientos de Weber y Durkheim, para quienes la religión es un hecho social que impulsa a la gente a llevar un estilo de vida según diferentes preceptos religiosos para así lograr la salvación y con base en los aportes a los estudios de género hechos por Butler, Scott, Rubin y Nicholson, este artículo pretende describir cómo se estructuran las relaciones de género en el matrimonio de las parejas recién casadas pertenecientes a una congregación de los testigos de Jehová de Cali. El análisis documental de los textos sagrados y las entrevistas mostraron que la interpretación de los preceptos religiosos está asociada con la sociabilidad primaria y secundaria de los individuos.

This article aims at analyzing possible stylistic patterns related to the translational process of brazilianisms present in a Darcy Ribeiro’s work, Maíra (1978), comparing it to other translations of Brazilian publications which integrate the Translational English Corpus (TEC). We base our research on canonical works of Corpus-Based Translation Studies (OLOHAN: 2001; BAKER: 1992 1993 1995; CAMARGO: 2005 2007), as well as of Terminology (FAULSTICH: 1995 2001 2002; BARBOSA: 2006), in order to investigate the sociocultural data by the use of WordSmith Tools - version 4.0 (SCOTT: 2004) and TEC Tools. We intend to promote a reflexive observation of brazilianisms, with regard to variation and loans, providing subsidies for the comprehension of translation as a social and linguistic behaviour.

O presente trabalho analisa as abordagens comunicativas a fim de desenvolvermos uma autorreflexão docente. As abordagens ocorreram por meio de uma atividade realizada pelo grupo PIBID, utilizando como metodologia as análises discursivas de Mortimer e Scott (2002), para verificar como ocorrem as interações entre estudantes e futuros professores de química. Para tal análise, realizamos leitura e discussão de um texto: “Identificação Genômica: o DNA Forense” como forma de contextualizar a química forense em uma sequência didática. Essa atividade serviu como base para o entendimento das análises discursivas existentes na interação entre estudantes de Ensino Médio de um Colégio da Rede Pública do Estado do Paraná e acadêmicos do subprojeto PIBID, os quais denominamos como pibidianos. As discussões foram gravadas com gravadores de áudio e depois transcritas para análise. Os métodos apresentados nas análises discursivas nos conduzem a uma autorreflexão da prática docente na interação de futuros professores de Química com estudantes do Ensino Médio de uma escola da rede pública de Toledo/PR. Como a atividade foi desenvolvida pelo grupo de acadêmicos do PIBID, um dos principais focos do projeto consistiu em permitir aos pibidianos vivências sobre práticas pedagógicas em sala de aula. Com isso, esta atividade permitiu a esses acadêmicos, por meio das abordagens comunicativas de Mortimer e Scott (2002), identificar os posicionamentos pedagógicos na discussão de um texto, a fim de analisar suas ações no decorrer da atividade.

ABSTRACTIn this article the author isolates an anecdote from Roland Huntford's account of the Scott and Amundsen expeditions’ meeting on 4 February 1911 at Framheim, the Norwegian base in the Bay of Whales. In this anecdote, Lieutenant Victor Campbell allegedly told Roald Amundsen that a British motor sledge was ‘already onterra firma’, which consequently led Amundsen to worry that a British motor-sledge had already travelled across the Great Ice Barrier to reach the Beardmore Glacier. The author demonstrates the primary evidence that indicates that this anecdote is unrealistic: Amundsen's journal further indicates that he did not consider Scott's vehicles a threat. This ‘terra firma’ myth has skewed our modern understanding of events, ascribing to Amundsen an erroneous motivation (a supposed fear of the British motor sledges) to explain and excuse his too-early start for the south pole in September 1911, which was an error that nearly led to a Norwegian death (that of Lieutenant Kristian Prestrud). In reality, fear of Scott's motor sledges was not the reason for Amundsen's ‘false start’. This article concludes with a discussion on the hazards of attributing ‘hidden motivations’ to historical figures without citation of primary evidence, and recommends that Huntford include clearly-cited references and endnotes for the next edition of his joint biography of Scott and Amundsen, in keeping with modern standards of scholarship.

The protein encoded by ORF2 has reverse transcriptase (RT) activity in vitro (Mathias, S. L., A. F. Scott, H. H. Kazazian, Jr., J. D. Boeke, and A. Gabriel, Science 254:1808-1810, 1991). Because L1 elements are so numerous, efficient methods for identifying active copies are required. Abstract. We present detailed surface elevation measurements for the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica derived from aerial lidar surveys flown in the austral summer of 2014–2015 as part of an effort to understand geomorphic changes over the past decade. Lidar return density varied from 2 to > 10 returns m−2 with an average of about 5 returns m−2. Vertical and horizontal accuracies are estimated to be 7 and 3 cm, respectively. In addition to our intended targets, other ad hoc regions were also surveyed including the Pegasus flight facility and two regions on Ross Island, McMurdo Station, Scott Base (and surroundings), and the coastal margin between Cape Royds and Cape Evans. No ano de 2019, presenciamos muitas falas de representantes políticos extremamente problemáticas, principalmente quando nos remetemos aos direitos individuais de cada ser humano. Algumas não foram levadas a sério, outras viraram piadas, ou foram fortemente rebatidas. Uma em especial, a fala da ministra Damares Alves, sobre meninas usarem rosa, e meninos, azul, suscitou as três alternativas anteriores, além de uma série de produções artísticas. Este trabalho visa analisar dois poemas da coletânea A Resistência dos Vagalumes (2019), que se propõem a questionar o binarismo de cores atrelado ao binarismo de gênero e sua prescrição de conduta adequada a cada um desses opostos, pois assim são entendidos. Utilizaremos como base teórica os estudos de gênero, sob a perspectiva de Joan Scott (2019), Tereza de Lauretis (2019) e Judith Butler (2019).

Neste artigo, apresento um breve panorama da produção de poesia para crianças no universo digital, utilizando, como base, algumas obras brasileiras e estrangeiras que ganharam destaque entre críticos de literatura infantojuvenil. As discussões dialogam com pesquisas recentes sobre poesia digital e literatura digital infantojuvenil, destacando-se autores como Richard Flynn, Teale e Yokota, Roberto Simanowski, Scott Rettberg, Luis Correa-Díaz, Katherine Hayles, entre outros. Inicialmente, discuto o lugar das obras digitalizadas e dos livros digitais estáticos no contexto da poesia digital infantil. Em seguida, discorro brevemente sobre alguns experimentos de poesia infantil que se destacaram na era Flash. Por fim, apresento um panorama dos principais tipos de book apps dedicados à poesia infantil atualmente, com ênfase nas adaptações de clássicos e na utilização dos book apps como plataformas para divulgação da obra de poetas contemporâneos.
