Abstract:
Scott domains, originated and commonly used in formal semantics of computer languages, were generalized by J. Adámek to Scott complete categories. We prove that the categorical counterpart of the result of D. Scott – the existence of a countable based Scott domain universal with respect to all countably based Scott domains – is no longer valid for the categorical generalization. However, all obstacles disappear if the notion of the Scott complete category is weakened to a categorical counterpart of bifinite domains.

Abstract:
Ten spices were added separately to tryptose broth which was then inoculated to contain, per ml, 105 or 107 Listeria monocytogenes strain Scott A or V7, respectively, and held at 4°C for 7 d. Strain Scott A appeared to be more sensitive to effects of spices than was strain V7. The population of strain Scott A was decreased to <10/ml in 1 d by 1% sage, in 4 d by 1% allspice, and in 7 d by 1% cumin, garlic powder, paprika, and red pepper. Black pepper and mace at 1% reduced but did not completely inactivate the population of strain Scott A, whereas 1% white pepper enhanced its growth. At 1%, only sage reduced the population of strain V7 to <10, but 7 d rather than 1 d of storage were required. At 3 and 5%, some activity against strain V7 was exhibited by allspice, mace, and nutmeg. Generally, the antilisterial effect of spices increased as the concentration in the medium increased from 1 to 3 to 5% .

Menking, Christopher N. "Remembering the Forgotten D-day: the Amphibious Landing at Collado Beach During the Mexican War." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2014. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc499987/.

Abstract:
The current historiography of the Mexican War does not give due credit to the significance of the landing at Collado Beach. No one source addresses all aspects of the landing, nor have any included an analysis of the logistical side of the operation. This thesis presents a comprehensive analysis of the operation from conception to execution in an attempt to fill the gap in the historiography. Additionally, the lessons learned and lessons forgotten from this landing are addressed as to how this landing shaped American military doctrine regarding joint operations and amphibious operations. The conclusion drawn from the historical sources supports the argument that this operation had a significant impact on the American military. The influence of this operation shows itself throughout American military history, including the establishment of amphibious doctrine by the Unites States Marine Corps and during World War II.

Full text
Abstract:
A method is presented for predicting soot in gas turbine combustors. A soot formation/oxidation model due to Fairweather et al [1992] has been employed. This model has been implemented in the CONCERT code which is a fully elliptic three-dimensional (3-D) body-fitted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code based on pressure correction techniques. The combustion model used here is based on an assumed probability density function (PDF) parameterized by the mean and variance of the mixture fraction and a β-PDF shape. In the soot modeling, two additional transport equations corresponding to the soot mass fraction and the soot number density are solved. As an initial validation, calculations were performed in a simple propane jet diffusion flame for which experimental soot concentration measurements along the centerline and along the radius at various axial downstream stations were available from the literature. Soot predictions were compared with measured data which showed reasonable agreement. Next, soot predictions were made in a 3-D model of a CF6-80LEC engine single annular combustor over a range of operating pressures and temperatures. Although the fuel in the combustor is Jet-A, the soot computations assumed propane to be the surrogate fuel. To account for this fuel change, the soot production term was increased by a factor of 10X. In addition, the oxidation term was increased by a factor of 4X to account for uncertainties in the assumed collision frequencies. The soot model was also tested against two other combustors, a CF6-80C and a CFM56-5B. Comparison of the predicted scot concentrations with measured smoke numbers showed fairly good correlation within the range of the soot model parameters studied. More work has to be performed to address several modeling issues including sensitivity to oxidation rate coefficients and scalar diffusion.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Long-term petroleum prices and increasingly-stringent emissions regulations are driving manufacturers and users alike to consider alternatives to diesel-fueled engines. Mixing controlled combustion of alcohol fuels, such as ethanol, has been identified as a promising technology based the low propensity for particulate and NOx production, but the higher heats of vaporization and auto-ignition temperatures of these fuels make their direct use in diesel engine architectures a challenge. However, because alcohol fuels do not form appreciable levels of soot even in mixing-controlled (MCCI) mode, and because stoichiometric air/fuel ratios (AFR) can be used to simplify NOx aftertreatment, engine design optimization efforts can be targeted to maximize thermal efficiency. Therefore, to realize the potential of alcohol-fueled combustion, engineering insight is required to understand how design parameters, such as increased engine insulation, piston bowl geometry, or spray targeting, should be optimally utilized. In this work, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling framework is developed and validated in order to identify pathways to improve the performance of an ethanol-fueled engine operating in an MCCI mode at a stoichiometric AFR. To evaluate the use of TBCs as an engine insulation method, a simplified 1-D conjugate heat transfer (CHT) modeling framework is employed. The CFD model is first validated against baseline engine data over selected inlet air heating temperatures for two piston bowl-injector configurations that define the extrema of the design space. The addition of the 1-D CHT model only increases the computational expense by 15% relative to traditional approaches, yet offers more accurate heat transfer predictions over constant temperature boundary conditions. The model is then used to explore the efficacy of injector orientations and piston bowl geometries in improving the indicated thermal efficiency of alcohol fueled compression ignition engines. Using a design of experiments approach, several candidate designs were identified that improved fuel-air mixing, shortened the combustion duration, and increased thermal efficiency. The most promising design was then fabricated and tested in a Caterpillar 1Y3700 Single Cylinder Oil Test Engine (SCOTE). The engine testing confirmed the findings from the CFD simulations, and found that the co-optimized injector and piston bowl design yielded over 2-percentage point increase in thermal efficiency at the same equivalence ratio (0.96) and over 6-percentage point increase at the same engine load (10.1 bar indicated mean effective pressure), while satisfying design constraints for peak pressure and maximum pressure rise rate.
