Abstract:
Postpartum depression affects 7 to 20% of women in the first year after giving birth. Unfortunately, over 50% of women experiencing postpartum depression go untreated due to lack of detection, placing the woman and child at risk for detrimental consequences. One of the most common barriers in detecting and treating postpartum depression is the low incidence of screening performed at primary care and obstetrical visits during the postpartum period. Efforts have focused on improving identification of postpartum depression through the use of a valid screening tool performed throughout the first y

Tuberculosis remains the world’s deadliest communicable bacterial disease with an unacceptably high death rate. In 2013 an estimated 1.5 million people died as a direct result of TB, and nine million new cases were reported. Multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis cases are on the rise and without novel approaches to combat their spread, tuberculosis will continue to claim the lives of millions worldwide. One such novel approach is to rejuvenate the use of the second-line antibiotic ethionamide. Ethionamide is a structural analogue of the first-line pro-dru

Abstract:
Postpartum depression affects some 10% to 20% of mothers. Its impact on the health and well-being of mothers and their infants is well documented. If not identified and addressed early, it can result in emotional burden, costly hospitalization and treatment, and, at worst, suicide and or infanticide. Empowerment theory was the conceptual framework for this hermeneutic phenomenological study. The purpose was to understand the lived experiences of the screening and treatment processes of 10 women from New York City experiencing postpartum depression and their perceived adequacy of the treatment

Abstract This paper reviews scaling and deposition mechanisms as they relate to internal boiler treatment. Discussed are pertinent mechanisms of scale and deposition control processes. These include both precipitation and soluble programs for hardness control. Dispersion mechanisms for controlling precipitated feedwater contaminants such as iron oxides are presented. Two laboratory screening tests are presented and discussed. Coordinated and congruent phosphate programs for pH control and all-volatile treatment (AVT) are not within the scope of this paper.

Abstract A relatively simple biofilm column to study biogenic sulfide inhibition under dynamic (flow) conditions is described. Results of studies aimed at evaluating anthraquinone, a biostatic inhibitor of sulfate-reducing bacteria, in simulated oilfield water treatment conditions are presented. The study results have indicated that the biofilm columns are an excellent screening tool for assessing the effects of interactions between oilfield water treatment chemicals on biofilm activity. Anthraquinone was found to be a very effective inhibitor of sulfide production. Co-treatments or sequential

Abstract:
Abstract The use of reverse osmosis for water purification is increasing. Reverse osmosis offers an economically viable approach for the removal of dissolved solids from water. One aspect of membrane use is the need to treat the incoming water to prevent scale, microbiological growth and fouling from inhibiting the membrane's ability to function. In extreme conditions, these conditions can ruin a membrane, forcing expensive replacement. Treatment is itself of no value if the treatment chemicals are antagonistic to the membrane. It is of no benefit to feed a microbicide to a reverse osmosis sys

We investigate the impact of non-invasive anemia screening on treatment adherence in El Salvador. Anemia is a common childhood condition in low-income countries, due mainly to iron-deficiency, which if left untreated during critical development periods can have lasting health consequences. While effective treatments exist, adherence to treatment is often challenging, since the symptoms of mild to moderate anemia such as lack of energy or paleness can be easily overlooked. We test whether making anemia risks salient through screening during child-well visits can improve treatment adherence, usi
