Abstract:
Arabic script is naturally cursive and unconstrained and, as a result, an automatic recognition of its handwriting is a challenging problem. The analysis of Arabic script is further complicated in comparison to Latin script due to obligatory dots/stokes that are placed above or below most letters. In this paper, we introduce a new approach that performs online Arabic word recognition on a continuous word-part level, while performing training on the letter level. In addition, we appropriately handle delayed strokes by first detecting them and then integrating them into the word-part body. Our current implementation is based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and correctly handles most of the Arabic script recognition difficulties. We have tested our implementation using various dictionaries and multiple writers and have achieved encouraging results for both writer-dependent and writer-independent recognition.

Abstract:
Offline writer identification is one of the major fields of study in behavioral biometric. It is a process of matching a questioned document with other documents of known writers to find the appropriate writer. In this paper, local handwriting-based attributes are used as features, and multi-layer perceptron and simple logistic classifiers are used for decision making. The method is tested on an unconstrained handwritten Bangla database of 1383 documents with variable number of datasets from 190 writers. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our system, since it outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by approximately 3% (top-3 and top-4 choices). Further, our method is approximately 27 times faster than conventional segmentation-based methods.

Abstract:
Identification of handwriting found on the disputed document by comparison with the known handwriting samples of the suspect still comprise the problem which is most commonly referred to a forensic document examiner. One of the important scientifically established principles which govern such analysis and identification is the ‘Principle of Comparison’ which explicitly states that, for obtaining correct results, like has to be compared with like; meaning thereby that the expert has to analyze and rely upon similar letters and combinations between the questioned and the standard handwriting samples and, consequently, the problems where similar handwriting samples in the same script have not been provided for comparison; usually fall outside the scope of forensic document examination. However, in this field, like any other human activity; perfect and ideal conditions are hard to achieve. Handwriting, being acquired skill and neuro-muscular controlled motor activity, its basic elements like the horizontal stroke, vertical stroke, loops, curves and arches etc., are combined together to form letters and alphabets of all the scripts. The question then arises — whether inter-script comparison of handwriting samples can be attempted leading to some limited or qualified conclusions. Thus, if it becomes possible and practicable to examine and compare the basic elements of questioned handwriting in one script, say Devanagri with the similar elements found in specimen/ admitted handwriting samples in another script by the same writer, say Gurmukhi, because sample handwritings in Devanagri could not be procured for whatsoever reasons; the scope of examination can be widened further and expert may be in a position to express some opinion regarding their common authorship or otherwise, which may be found worthwhile to the investigating agency or the court of law, thereby helping in the administration of justice ultimately. To the best of our knowledge, not much research is available, where writings produced in different scripts by the same writer could be compared, thereby leading to a definite opinion on the issue of their common authorship or otherwise. In the present study, an attempt has been made to explore this issue by taking writing samples of the same writer in three scripts, having knowledge of all the three commonly used languages, i.e., English, Hindi, and Punjabi, corresponding to the said scripts i.e., Roman, Devanagari and Gurumukhi. Three hundred sixty 360 writing samples were obtained from as many as 40 individuals appropriately skilled in writing, reading and speaking these languages/ scripts. Careful study and evaluation of the basic elements of written strokes whose execution were found to be similar in all the three scripts has been carried out indicating the possibility of ‘Script Independent Comparison’. Limitations of the proposed study have also been discussed in the paper.

Abstract:
Recognizing the writer of a text that has been handwritten is a very intriguing research problem in the field of document analysis and recognition. This study tables an automatic way of recognizing the writer from handwritten samples. Even though much has been done in previous researches that have presented other various methods, it is still clear that the field has a room for improvement. This particular method uses Optimum Features based writer characterization. Here, each of the samples written is grouped according to their set of features that are acquired from a computed codebook. This proposed codebook is different from the others which segment the samples into graphemes by fragmenting a certain part of the writing known as ending strokes. The proposed technique is employed to a locate and extract the handwriting fragments from ending zone and then grouped the similar fragments to generate a new cluster known as ending cluster. The cluster that comes in handy in the process of coming up with the ending codebook through picking out the center of the same fragment group. The process is finalized by evaluating the proposed method on four datasets of the various languages. This method being proposed had an impressive 97.12% identification rate which is rates the best result on the ICFHR dataset.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper investigates code-switching and script-switching in medieval documents from the Cairo Geniza, written in Judaeo-Arabic (Arabic in Hebrew script), Hebrew, Arabic and Aramaic. Legal documents regularly show a macaronic style of Judaeo-Arabic, Aramaic and Hebrew, while in letters code-switching from Judaeo-Arabic to Hebrew is tied in with various socio-linguistic circumstances and indicates how markedly Jewish the sort of text is. Merchants in particular employed a style of writing devoid of Hebrew elements, whereas community dignitaries are much more prone to mixing of Hebrew and Judaeo-Arabic (and Arabic), although the degree of mixing also depends on a number of other factors, such as on the individual education. Analyses show great variation within the repertoire of single authors, as shown on the example of Daniel b. ʿAzariah, according to the purpose of the correspondence, with religious affairs attracting the highest Hebrew content, whereas letters pertaining to trade exhibit the lowest Hebrew content. Script-switching between Hebrew and Arabic may be prompted by convenience of individual writers, or occur as an idiosyncratic quirk, but reveal the close familiarity of the writer with both alphabets.

Also mentioned are films: This Queen of Spades [Eta pikovaya dama] (2003), The Kukotsky Case [Kazus Kukotskogo] (2005), and others. As the interview was conducted remotely due to the pandemic, it also discusses the ways in which the novel coronavirus may change the world (if at all). Ulitskaya also shares her opinion on what a writer should do in these changing times.

Abstract:
The Dead Sea Scrolls are tangible evidence of the Bible’s ancient scribal culture. This study takes an innovative approach to palaeography—the study of ancient handwriting—as a new entry point to access this scribal culture. One of the problems of palaeography is to determine writer identity or difference when the writing style is near uniform. This is exemplified by the Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaa). To this end, we use pattern recognition and artificial intelligence techniques to innovate the palaeography of the scrolls and to pioneer the microlevel of individual scribes to open access to the Bible’s ancient scribal culture. We report new evidence for a breaking point in the series of columns in this scroll. Without prior assumption of writer identity, based on point clouds of the reduced-dimensionality feature-space, we found that columns from the first and second halves of the manuscript ended up in two distinct zones of such scatter plots, notably for a range of digital palaeography tools, each addressing very different featural aspects of the script samples. In a secondary, independent, analysis, now assuming writer difference and using yet another independent feature method and several different types of statistical testing, a switching point was found in the column series. A clear phase transition is apparent in columns 27–29. We also demonstrated a difference in distance variances such that the variance is higher in the second part of the manuscript. Given the statistically significant differences between the two halves, a tertiary, post-hoc analysis was performed using visual inspection of character heatmaps and of the most discriminative Fraglet sets in the script. Demonstrating that two main scribes, each showing different writing patterns, were responsible for the Great Isaiah Scroll, this study sheds new light on the Bible’s ancient scribal culture by providing new, tangible evidence that ancient biblical texts were not copied by a single scribe only but that multiple scribes, while carefully mirroring another scribe’s writing style, could closely collaborate on one particular manuscript.

The objective of this study was to see whether bimodal input (audio and its tape-script) can increase students’ listening comprehension in TOEIC listening section. Three groups of freshmen were involved in this study. Before the experiment began, three groups took the same TOEIC listening pre-test. They were selected and put into three groups with roughly equal level based on pre-test scores. All of the three groups trained in the same listening comprehension skills and strategies, and after that they did the same TOEIC listening post-test. There were two experimental groups, one group was shown the tape-script during the listening exercises) and the other experimental group was provided tape-script in the post listening comprehension practices, while the control is not shown the tape-script at all. By using a projector, presentation slides of tape-script were shown to the two experimental groups, one group was exposed the tape-script and at the same time the students were reading the script, and the other group was exposed with the tape-script after they finished listening, in order to check and analyze some parts in the listening to make sure about they heard and to see the relevant information needed. The pre-test and post-test comparisons showed that all three groups performed better as indicated by the increase of the listening comprehension scores in the post test, so it may show that each group is eager to learn the language. Each has to deal with the test which consists of 100 questions broken down into four parts, photographs, questions and responses, conversations, and talks. Despite the emergence of a Theatre Writers' Union during the 'seventies, the path for the novice writer into the profession remains as uncertain as ever, and security is tenuous even for the established dramatist. Christine Eccles has worked in the theatre both as a director and as a member of that elusive species, the playreader, and is currently reviewing for Time Out and Plays International. Our interest, especially when it comes to the subject of literature, is to show the manner in which the text processing done by the author (script writer/director) brings to light the guidelines of the novelistic text’s semantics, which under careful analysis reveals a kind of personal myth of the novelist. The skewed, syncopated, interrupted writing which disrupts the chronotope serves the needs of the script as well as the director’s selective vision. Abstract:
Abstract Ferris Wheels seem to fascinate film-directors – notably Carol Reed in The Third Man (1949), based on Graham Greene’s story and script. Though Ferris Wheels figure less conspicuously in twentieth-century novels, Malcolm Lowry provides an exception in Under the Volcano (1947), a novel also comparable to The Third Man in other ways. One explanation might be that Greene simply drew on Lowry’s example when developing his film-script (later published as a novella) – work begun very shortly after Under the Volcano had appeared. More plausibly, each writer might be understood to have responded separately, though similarly, to the unique pressures of their age. Identifying how these stresses were represented in their work, through cognate symbologies, may suggest some productive ways of reading historically.

Abstract:
In Deaf1 film and television, modest production budgets and limited training opportunities present considerable challenges for emerging screenwriting talent. This article argues that orthodox approaches to developing screenplays must be expanded when working in this context. The analysis focuses on an individual case study: the development of a half-hour television drama between a professional hearing script editor and a novice Deaf screenwriter. The article discusses the creative and cultural complexity of the editor‐writer relationship, drawing on Schon’s ‘reflective practitioner’ concept, Ladd’s analysis of Deaf culture, Gramsci’s elaboration of the subaltern and the theories of Bourdieu, Foucault and Freire. More specifically, Macdonald’s Screen Idea Work Group is employed to explore the dialogical process of shared creation, which expands out to include production team, actors and interpreters via a uniquely adapted ‘table read’ situated at the heart of the development process. Reflecting on the value of this powerful encounter, the aim of the study is to address a gap in knowledge about this practice phenomenon and to contribute to Deaf filmmaking practice by proposing an original methodology. Overall, it is contended that greater investment is required to develop assured screenwriting voices to serve Deaf film and television audiences.

Abstract:
Kata kunci: aksara Jawa, desain informasi, website AbstractJavanese script is considered as one of many of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, especially Javanese culture.
