Jordan, Sheila Patricia. "A spirituality of the heart in the context of the Franciscan eremitical tradition : a scriptural understanding of "heart", "desert", and "conversion" as the basis of this, both historically and in the present day / by Patricia Jordan." Abstract:
To speak of the heart is to speak a universal language. After a brief examination of poetry, prose, art and music, we discuss and analyse the word heart in its universal applicability within different religions, eras, cultures and creeds. Our particular focus is then centred in Sacred Scripture where we find the most comprehensive understanding of the word heart. Tracing the depth and richness of its meaning throughout the Scripture texts, we are faced with the human paradox of good and evil, both of which proceed from the mysterious realm of the heart where freedom and grace engage us in ways that are at times beyond our comprehension. Examining the place of the desert in the process of forming the heart - which we understand to be the vital, inner core of a person - we highlight the struggle involved in this process, suggesting as the desert Fathers have before us, that the heart itself is at times a battlefield. Rooting ourselves in the Sacred Scriptures and in continuity with the Christian tradition, we introduce St. Francis of Assisi. Analysing and interpreting St. Francis' journey into his own heart and to the heart of others, leads us to a consideration of the part the desert plays in this journey. This analysis is directly related to the active-contemplative question that has been the subject of debate ever since the time of Jesus in his encounter with Martha and Mary. Dualistic language and thinking suggests that the different dimensions of life stand in opposition, leading to an either/or situation rather than an acceptance of a more integrated both/and approach. In an effort to avoid dualism and embrace paradox, we facilitate the journey of the heart towards wholeness and integration, combining theory and practice by bringing the fruit of this research to completion in The Portiuncula, a centre for Franciscan prayer and solitude, a new expression of our Third Order Regular Franciscan charism. Developing an innovative approach to St. Francis Rule for Hermitages, we discuss the significance of this, not only for members of the Franciscan family but for every person on the spiritual quest and the journey of the heart. After the example of St. Francis of Assisi, we have tried to capture the spirit of his following in the footsteps of the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ. In grappling with the implications of a literal following of Jesus Christ, and the challenges this poses for every individual in his or her uniqueness, we enter the realm of mystery, paradox, freedom and grace: the heart. Presenting a spirituality of the heart in the context of the biblical understanding of "heart", "desert", and "conversion", in the context of the Franciscan eremitical tradition, we continue the universal quest for the fullness of love which is mysteriously contained in the twofold but unified experience of contemplation and compassion.

Inge, John. "A Christian theology of place." Thesis, Durham University, 2001. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1235/.

Full text
Abstract:
The contention of this thesis is that place is much more important in human experience and in the Christian scheme of things than is generally recognised. I first survey the manner in which place has been progressively downgraded in Western thought and practice in favour of a concentration upon space and time. I note that during the latter part of the twentieth century scholars in a variety of disciplines have suggested that place is much more important than this prevailing discourse would suggest. Few theologians, however, recognise the importance of place. I suggest that, in this respect, theologians owe more to the mores of modernity than to a thorough engagement with the Christian scriptures and tradition. Second, I embark upon such an engagement with the scriptures. My findings suggest that their witness confirms that, from a Christian perspective, place is vital. With this in mind, my third step is to propose that the best way of understanding the role of place in a manner consonant with the Biblical narrative is sacramentally. Fourth, I test this hypothesis by examining the Christian tradition's approach to pilgrimage and investigate how it might be applied to holy places and churches in general. Finally, I conclude that a renewed appreciation of place by theologians and churchpeople, which their scriptures and tradition invite, would enable them to offer much to a society still trapped in the paradigm of modernity which underestimates place, with dehumanising effect.

Abstract:
The present study seeks to uncover in this production the emergence of orality in writing. Analysing the different aspects present in the very structure of the text, at the heart of which is an orality has been inscribed, is a focus of this study. The critical perspective on this literary production is one that consists of renewing the umbilical tie between the writer and the culture of his birth, especially popular culture which is an oral and maternel culture. This analysis of the strategy of writing seeks also to discern the transcription of orality in the text as a reestablished relationship with the mother-word. As an inaugural body, the mother-word lays out an entire cultural realm, a symbolic field, and thereby inscribes the problematic of identity within that of language. The mother-word is important in the constitution and grounding of the imaginary. It is this imaginary that operates in scriptural and poetic activity

Abstract:
In 2009, the Evangeliar was published in Luxembourgish for the first time, containing the most-read Gospels of the Roman-Catholic liturgical tradition. In the introductory part, this thesis describes the historical, ecclesiastical, national, as well as linguistic background within which the faithful practised their religion from 1815 to the present day. Following on from there, it elucidates the influence of the Roman-Catholic church, as an institution, on contemporary biblical and liturgical translations, including the Evangeliar. This influence can originate from within the practice of Magisterium, scriptural tradition, or liturgical usage. In the second chapter, the translation of Mark 1, 1-45 is revised verse for verse in order to discuss the method as well as the criteria used in its development, with the aim of revealing traps of various kinds: linguistic, exegetical, theological, maybe even cultural, and furthermore to sound out the limitations of a translation into Luxembourgish of the Gospels. The conclusion, in which the various inquiry elements converge, also contains several elements conducive to further research on the translation of μετανοέω and of μετάνοια in general and in the Evangeliar in particular

Pokrifka-Joe, Todd. "Redescribing God : the roles of scripture, tradition and reason in Karl Barth's doctrines of divine unity, constancy and eternity." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13617.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis of Karl Barth's theological method as it appears in his treatment of three divine perfections - unity, constancy, and eternity - in Church Dogmatics, II/l, chapter VI. In order to discern the method by which Barth reaches his doctrinal conclusions, the thesis examines the respective roles of Scripture, tradition and reason-the 'threefold cord'-in this portion of his Church Dogmatics. The conclusion reached in the thesis is that, within Barth's treatment of God's unity, constancy and eternity, Scripture functions as the authoritative source and basis for theological critique and construction, and tradition and reason are functionally subordinate to Scripture. That said, Barth employs a predominantly indirect way of relating Scripture and theological proposals, a way in which tradition and reason play important 'mediatory' roles. The thesis defends these claims in the following manner. Chapter 1 surveys recent scholarship relevant to the thesis and shows how this thesis will make a distinctive contribution to scholarly discussion of Barth's theology. Chapter 2 sets up the exposition of Barth's theological method that is provided in the remaining chapters by providing a 'conceptual framework'- an orderly arrangement of definitions and conceptual categories. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the main features of Barth's Doctrine of God as whole, as it appears in Church Dogmatics, with a special emphasis on the roles of Scripture, tradition and reason within those doctrines. Chapters 4-6 are an expository analysis of Barth's treatments of divine unity, constancy and eternity respectively, and form the primary basis for the claims of the thesis. Chapter 7, the conclusion, summarises the argument and makes some final observations.

Full text
Abstract:
Amphilochius of Iconium contributes to the development of the 4th century’s theology by specifying the Christological terminology, especially with the phrase "one Son and two natures". According to Amphilochius, the human nature of Christ is "liable, deadly and intelligible". The divine nature is "impassible, immortal and invisible". According to Amphilochius, the Logos of God was engendered "because of the Economy".According to the particular expression of Amphilochius, "the Logos of God was born carnally, so as we will be regenerated spiritually". Christ put on the form of a slave, so that we can take advantage of the glory of adoption. For Amphilochius, the Father is "uncreated", "the creator of all things", the Son "was created out oftime and without principle" and "has always existed with the Father according to the divinity" and the Holy Spirit, Amphilochius says that It "eternally proceeds from the Father". Amphilochius speaks clearly for the eternal coexistence of the three divine persons, for the uncreated of the Father, the begotten of the Son and the procession of the Holy Spirit

Graber, Anne-Cathy. "Marie : une lecture comparée de "Redemptoris Mater" (Jean-Paul II) et du "Commentaire du Magnificat" (Luther) à la lumière des dialogues œcuméniques." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015STRAK018.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of Mary is often understood as an obstacle to reconciliation between Churches. Using this theme, the dissertation has as its objective the verification of the coherence of the contemporary ecumenical movement aswell as to how the results of the various dialogues correspond to the official teaching of the Churches. The starting point is a comparative study of John-Paul II’s Redemptoris Mater and Luther’s Commentary on theMagnificat. This comparison is then examined in the light of results from various ecumenical dialogues (between Lutherans and Catholics as well as Evangelicals, Pentecostals and Catholics…). Out of the dialogues come reciprocal questions concerning how Mary is understood in the mystery of the Church and of salvation. Marian theology shows itself to be a very fertile method of ecumenical verification, revealing both new consensuses and clarifying issues that remain open for ecumenical research, especially in relation to the instrumentality of the Church

Abstract:
The question I address is: how might a theology of authority be conceived in the light of questions raised by what is termed 'post-modernity'? Is it possible to articulate a theology of authority coming to the church community 'from God' that avoids an oppressive and alienating heteronomy? The thesis explores the question of authority as of vital importance in the sociological dimension of religion, calling for legitimisation (in light of claims made for itself) and as obligatory in the theological sphere. For this reason the project involves two methodologies (theological and sociological/ethnographic). While this investigation is relevant to all sections of the Christian church, particular attention is paid to Baptist churches in the UK, since they hold a concept in their tradition that I suggest is valuable in answering the question of the thesis, namely that of covenant. Within the Christian tradition there is an inner 'problematic' relating the personal authority of Christ to the forms of institution (church) and text (scripture). I explore this with a brief survey of theological authority as found in the fourfold foundation of scripture, tradition, reason and experience. From this is developed a brief theological and Christological reflection on divine authority and covenant theology as found in Karl Barth and his response to the 'inner problematic'. Within contemporary culture I view authority through the lens of so-called 'postmodernism', identifying four challenges to the notion of 'external authority' (all of which exemplify a move from the external to internal, and objective to subjective approaches to authority). This is further explored by means of qualitative research with one-to-one interviews conducted in a Baptist church in York. This data is reflected upon by means of ethnography and 'judicious narratives', especially in dialogue with material from Guest ('congregational study'), Heelas and Woodhead ('subjectivised-self') and Healy ('theodramatic horizon' and 'practical-prophetic ecclesiology'), providing an intersection between the language of theology and sociology. The concept of church as covenant community is explored in Baptist and (more briefly) Anglican traditions, leading to a constructive proposal that both the inner-church 'problematic' and the 'postmodern' challenge to authority might begin to be resolved with the notion of covenant. It is within this context of relationship, human and divine, that the authoritative and revelatory Word of God, the story that is Christ, is found in community and praxis. Here is a 'triangulating' relationship between authority, story and covenant revealing divine authority in a non-coercive way and relevant to contemporary culture.

Abstract:
The Russian Evangelical Soteriology as a phenomenon was evaluated in the dissertation. The original Russian Evangelical confessions of faith and some other historical documents of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries are used to present the following hypothesis. The historic fluidity of Soteriology of Russian Evangelica1s may only be understood in the light of their consistent adherence to the principles of Sola Scriptura and the Priesthood of all believers. We come to conclusion that the existence of Russian Evangelical Soteriology is not a question to be discussed, but a clear historical fact. We show that it has its past and present, a well-defended subject of study with clear presuppositions, rather developed vision, and it is unique as a phenomenon. The major principles of this theology strictly devoted to the Scripture and a flexible formulation of doctrines. We strongly insist that it is impossible without being eclectic combine the Evangelical Soteriology of Scripture with the Orthodox Soteriology of Tradition. The additional result of the study is the attempt to evaluate the possibility for a reconstruction of Russian Evangelical Soteriology as a part of a self-identification process.

I have been in the traditional reorganization of the industry for more than 25 years. Since the beginning of my studies, I have served in the traditional rehabilitation and massage clinics and Chinese medicine clinics. I have contacted many subjects.I started my own business twenty years ago, and I have accumulated a lot of experience. From these experiences, I have dealt with many subjects who have had a variety of painful physical aiments. These pains have their own causes, and they also correspond to different strategies. In the clinical process, I propose a set of "central axis theory" dialectical methods to observe and find problems. First find the initial cause, which in turn helps solve the problems. Some people may be confused by internal medicine. Some can be relieved by qigong conditioning, and some must be massaged from their bones and bones to the organs.I classify the troubles of these subjects through the "central axis theory", and uses my summary from the traditional rectification and balance method to understand the source of the discomfort of the subject, this is in order to borrow from the traditional rectification technology. We find a solution to the problem by balancing techniques. In turn, we will broaden our horizons and teach traditional practitioners to improve their professional skills and help more people improve their quality of life.

Kame, Greg Sako. "Predestination in scriptures and reformation traditions : towards deconstructing paradigms for soteriology in a proposed Cameroon Baptist theological treatise." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/10563.

Full text
Abstract:
In the wake of the 19th century, the protestant reformation in Europe that led to the formation of mainline reformation traditions began impacting and shaping ministry in Africa, through missionary activities. But the clarion call for Africa’s renaissance was also a wakeup call for the African church to move from being consumers of the ‘imported’ theology brewed from a European perspective and take some responsibility in producing her own theology, which can be viewed and understood with an African cultural lens. If Africa must achieve the much needed renaissance, the church certainly has an indispensable role to play. But how can there be a meaningful church praxis in African polities without a solid contextualized theological foundation? Therefore in this project, I justify the need for a biblio-centric African theology by making a case for the Cameroon Baptist Convention in the Republic of Cameroon. I argue that, to be able to solidify its foundation and enhance its Christian theological praxis in the society, a Cameroon Baptist Theological Treatise is needed in the Cameroon Baptist Convention. One that would contain well delineated and defended theological tenets required of an independent Christian denomination in Africa. Central to the development of this treatise is the development of a soteriology with a cognitive theological understanding of divine predestination. To develop a correct soteriology for this purpose, a process is required, one that would need to use sound theological principles to ensure a biblically accurate and theologically sound doctrine of soteriology as the point of departure. As an evangelical systematic theological research, I attempt in this project to deconstruct biblical and theological paradigms from scriptures and reformation traditions, which the Cameroon Baptist Convention leaders could use as tools in the process of delineating and defending their own tenets on soteriology in the proposed theological treatise. It begins by gathering data from reformation traditions and scriptures on predestination and moves on to construct theories that would not only help the Cameroon Baptist Convention leaders to develop a soteriology but also be fundamental to developing other relevant doctrines needed in the proposed Cameroon Baptist Theological Treatise.

Abstract:
The thesis "Biblical Introduction in Jerome Hirnhaim's Theologia Universalis" contributes to a deeper understanding of the early modern thinking about the Holy Scripture. Theological compendium "Theologia universalis" was composed by Jerome Hirnhaim, abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery at Strahov, in the second half of the 17th century, and was used as a teaching aid for the monastic clergy. The thesis analyses the extracts from the Hirnhaim's compendium which are dedicated to the questions of relationship between Scripture and Tradition, biblical inspiration, interpretation of the biblical text and laity reading of Scripture. A comparison with Robert Bellarmine's "De Controversiis" shows that Hirnhaim's lectures were largely based on this Bellarmine's work. Numerous correspondences between the Hirnhaim's compendium and Gaspard Juénin's "Institutiones theologicae", a textbook compiled for use in the French seminaries in the nineties of the 17th century, shows a transnational character of early modern Catholic theology and teaching practice. Differences between the early modern and current view of Scripture can be observed in the area of pastoral practice.

Abstract:
Scripture is God’s Word in human language – a truth reflected over 2000years of Church history. Without this truth, proper knowledge of God is impossible. All human efforts to come to a true and meaningful understanding of God, lead to a variety of religious “isms.” The pluralism, post-modernism and post-Christian society of the 21st century, brings its own challenges. Words mean nothing and truth is relative. There are, however, unique resemblances with the pluralism, pre-modern and pre-Christian society of the patristic. From a historical-theological perspective, the researcher points out that these resemblances could shed light on the current burning issue around the authority of Scripture. This historic continuity with the patristic and apostolic tradition is addressed in relation to Tertullian and Augustine. Both these Church Fathers had to give Biblical answer to the burning issues of their day that sought to undermine the authority of Scripture. The patristic’s emphasis on the authority of Scripture, stems from the unique unity between the Old and New Testament. It finds expression in the Apostolic preaching – regula fidei – the rule by which sound theology and godly living is guaranteed. Their historical-literal method of Biblical exegesis reflects a Christian worldview in contrast to the secular worldview of their day. In conclusion the researcher points out the relevance of this study for Southern-Africa. The confusion within the ranks of society, and the disillusionment of hundreds of thousands in Africa concerning the role of the Church, ask for clear direction and uncompromising answers on the fundamentals of the Christian faith with the framework of the authority of Scripture.

Abstract:
Matouš Holeka's dissertation examines various interpretation methods of the Scriptures by theologians in the Roman-Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant traditions. These interpretation methods can be most clearly identified in the relationship between the Scriptures and tradition, in historical-critical methodology, and in political-cultural readings of the biblical texts. In this dissertation, these themes are shown as representing different ways of common critical reading of the sacred texts. As well as the historical-critical approach, there are also pre-critical and ideological readings. The dissertation starts by looking at this diversity in documents of the World Council of Churches. It shows that the differences in understanding the Scriptures are no longer connected primarily to the specific views of the respective traditions, but rather that similarities or differences in readings across churches. Abstract:
In contemporary societies, the issues of industrialization and successive globalization have been affecting deeply the reality and true meaning of human work. The objective dimension of work became more important than the subjective. In contrast, Pope Saint John Paul II affirms that man is “the subject of work” and not merely an object. The human person “performs various actions belonging to the work process; independently of their objective content, these actions must all serve to realize his humanity” (LE. 6), which refers to the eminent subjective dimension of work rooted in the dignity of the worker as person. A lot of research and many interpretations of Pope Saint John Paul II’s innovative teaching in this regard have been proposed and discussed. This study presents how he responded to the signs of his time, by deepening and further developing theology of work that is fundamentally grounded in Scripture, Tradition, and the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church. He demonstrates in depth and extent in his teaching the relevance of social justice as a moral principle by fully respecting human dignity in work, for human beings as subject of work are fundamentally understood as being created in the image and likeness of God.
