Abstract:
The indirect flight muscles of bees are used to produce a variety of actions in addition to flight, including sonication, which has a higher frequency than flight. We observed the dynamic movement of the scutum during sonication and the transition from tethered flight to sonication. During sonication, the scutum oscillated above its rest position, indicating that the conformation of the structural components of the thorax had been altered. Sonication vibrations of the thorax occurred by deformation of the scutum rather than by opening of the scutal fissure and are smaller than vibrations assoc

We took high-intensity flash photographs of the wing base during tethered flight of Lucilia sericata. These show that the radial stop and the pleural wing process separate during the upper part of the wing beat and then mate together on the downstroke. Using tungsten needle probes attached to wire strain gauges, we measured the movements of the parascutal shelf (PSS), of the lateral and dorsal scutum, and of the scutellum during tethered flight. We made a detailed study of the wing basesclerites and associated muscles in order to answer criticisms of our original model (Miyan & Ewing, 1985

OBJECTIVES: Postoperative attic retraction pocket is a critical issue and may be indicative of disease recurrence after canal-up tympanoplasty for middle ear cholesteatoma. Although scutum plasty is an acceptable procedure that can be used to prevent the pocket formation, how the scutum is reconstructed has remained controversial. The aim of this study was to clarify the value of scutum plasty using bone pate. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. In Drosophila the stereotyped arrangement of sensory bristles on the notum is determined by the tightly regulated control of transcription of the achaete-scute (ac-sc) genes which are expressed in small proneural clusters of cells at the sites of each future bristle. Expression relies on a series of discrete cis-regulatory elements present in the ac-sc gene complex that are the target of the transcriptional activators pannier (pnr) and the genes of the iroquois complex. Stereotyped bristle patterns are common among species of acalyptrate Schizophora such as Drosophila, and are thought to have

Time series of high resolution CFHT spectra of four δ Scuti stars are examined for consistency with the presence of nonradial pulsations (nrp). Each series exhibits a progression of subfeatures moving from blue to red through the absorption lines. Modeling of the low-degree modes is guided by radial-velocity variations and the known photometric variations.
