Glushko, Maryna. "Investment Climate in Ukraine." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2008. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-9709.

Full text
Abstract:
Ukrainian investment climate is attractive and repulsive at the same time. Although Ukraine occupies a strategic geographic position, it is a crossroad between one of the world's largest market European Union and one of the world's rapidly growing markets Russia; country of rich natural resources and manpower with a high level of education, which makes it an attractive investment environment, but still it has not yet reached its expected potential, because of inability to minimize government intervention in the operation of markets, remove administrative barriers that hinder business and perform target privatization and become attractive to foreign and domestic investors. That's why, the main objective of Master Thesis is to analyse and overview the investment climate of Ukraine through the framework of political, legal, economic and social conditions, risks and opportunities that ensure and promote investment activities for domestic and foreign investors. Thesis is concentrated on the notion of investment, types of investments and investment climate in general in order to benefit from knowledge how the investment can be protected and be eligible to take claim to dispute settlement. The research is analysing the recent economic performance and macroeconomic policy of the country; focused on general overview of investment legislation base and current regulation of foreign investment regime; describe the basic challenges and opportunities to invest in Ukraine.

Gonzales, Beata I. "NATO, Russia, Poland, and Ukraine perspectives on the Ukraine candidacy for NATO membership." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/5692.

Full text
Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
Ukraine's NATO ambitions form a controversial but vital international issue because they implicate the contradictory perspectives of Poland and Russia. The history and self-perceptions of all three states shape and reshape the question of Ukraine joining NATO, as a key step toward westernization, integration, and independence. The challenges of accommodating these competing visions of the past and future are relevant beyond the alliance to all practitioners and scholars of international affairs; in this connection, the question of Ukraine's NATO status also can serve as a case study of the broader subject. The present analysis takes the basic form of a historical narrative that analyzes Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian views of their shared history and divergent visions of the strategic future. This thesis provides a current prognosis as to the likelihood of Ukraine joining NATO and shows the limits and potential of the westernization process, security threats in the region, Russian democratization, and Russian engagement in international relations with NATO and Ukraine.

Abstract:
The phylogenetical status of the "Actinolepida" (Placodermi Arthrodira) remained ambiguous. The study of some unpublished material from the Early Devonian of Podolia (Ukraine) has led to a new phylogenetic analysis in order to work out the relationships between the actinolepids and the other arthrodires, as well as the Phyllolepida, Wuttagoonaspis and Antarctaspis. Kujdanowiaspis podolica (Brotzen, 1934), K. Buczacziensis (Brotzen, 1934) and Erikaspis nov. Gen. Zychi (Stensiö, 1945) are the subject of an anatomical description and new diagnoses are proposed. Pecular attention is paied to the axillar area of the scapulocoracoid, and to a new chondrified element of the vertebral column called "suprasynarcual". The Actinolepida are a paraphyletic group. Two clades are distinguished: the family Actinolepididae Gross 1940 and the super-family Kujdanowiaspididea Berg 1955. The Phyllolepida are sister-group of the Phlyctaenioidei, and are distance from Wuttagoonaspis and Antarctaspis

Abstract:
The following thesis is a study of development of CSR policies around the world and in Ukraine in particular. Additionally, the purpose is to make suggestions for positive change in a process of CSR implementation by Ukrainian companies and a role of state in promoting responsible business behavior. Corporate Social Responsibility is an emerging concept in Ukrainian business and delay in its establishment can be explained with a number of factors. There is a need in changes to existing management practice, insuring integration of principles, methods and tools of social responsibility in business activities of Ukrainian corporations in order to ensure their competitiveness, achievement of high productivity and profitability. The study has been performed through a literature review of current research and a case study of Ukrainian company CSR policy. The results show that there have been a major improvement in evolution of CSR concept in Ukraine over last few years, but there are still a number of problems to deal with. This thesis can be useful in reviewing last trends in development of CSR in Ukraine and defining challenges and problematic areas.

Anderson, Christopher C. "Ethnocentrism in Russia and Ukraine." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2037.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an investigation into the causes and consequences of ethnocentrism in Russia and Ukraine. It expands on the current literature in political science which has focused exclusively on data from the United States. By examining new countries, this work increases our knowledge about the characteristics of ethnocentrism and its effects. I also go beyond what has been done in previous work by examining ethnocentrism’s variable effects on different ethnic groups in a society. The dissertation is broken down into two parts. The first half, chapters one, two and three, look at the relationship between ethnocentrism and different ethnic groups. Using the ideas of William Sumner as a starting point, I investigate the differences in in-group and out-group attitudes across high-status and low-status ethnic groups using survey data from the United States, Russia and Ukraine. I also explore how group status influences individual levels of ethnocentrism. In chapters four and five I use ethnocentrism to help explain individual-level foreign policy attitudes and vote choice in Ukraine. Using survey data and multivariate logistic and linear regression models, I show that ethnocentrism has distinct effects on ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians living in Ukraine and that these effects are substantively significant. Ethnocentric Russians in Ukraine are much more likely than ethnic Ukrainians or non-ethnocentric ethnic Russians to support integration with Russia, to support fighting terrorism and to oppose NATO membership. They were also significantly less likely to vote for Viktor Yushchenko during the 2004 Ukrainian presidential election.

Vandrovec, Geoffrey. "Ukraine: A Nation Without Heroes." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/26883.

Full text
Abstract:
Ukraine's creation of national heroes reflects the challenges of nation-building after the fall of the Soviet Union. Since its independence in 1991, Ukraine has attempted to "rehabilitate" controversial political figures into national heroes in order to create a united national history. Nations have always depended on symbols and perhaps one of the most important symbols is that of a national hero. A person who fought and possibly died fighting for a national cause can unite and inspire future generations while legitimizing the necessity of the state. Along with inspiring faith and courage, the focus on national heroes manifests norms, goals, and are a medium for imposing those beliefs upon a society. While Ukraine has literary heroes, political figures are controversial. My research has focused on five figures: Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, Ivan Mazepa, Mykhailo Hrushevsky, Symon Petliura, and Stepan Bandera due to their attempts to build an independent state in Ukrainian history.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the autonomy of the Crimean region in Ukraine in terms of its impact on Ukraine&rsquo
s relations with Russia in the post-Soviet era. Thesis analyzes also the impact of the relations between Ukraine and Russia on the autonomy of the Crimean region. Contrary to the views that consider the Crimean autonomy as a product of the ethno-territorial relations between the Crimea which is populated by mainly ethnic Russians and Kiev, thesis argues that the interstate relations between Ukraine and Russia have played a crucial role in the evolution of the autonomy of the Crimean region within Ukraine. Thesis is composed of six chapters. Following the introductory First Chapter, the Second Chapter examines the origins of the Crimean autonomy. The Third Chapter examines the Crimean Autonomous Region during the post-Soviet period until the signing of the Friendship Treaty between Ukraine and Russia in 1997. The Fourth Chapter explores the period between 1997 and 2004. The Fifth Chapter analyses the period in the aftermath of the Orange revolution in 2004. The Last Chapter is the Conclusion.

Abstract:
Unemployment is a new public life issue in the former Soviet Union countries. We asked the question : what is the psychological impact of unemployment on the ukrainian population? This study focuses on the relationship between unemployment and social intelligence, workability, the relationship to work, and the level of stress. We used the following instruments : the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (Holmes and Rahe), the Test for Social Intelligence (O'Sullivan, Guilford), the Test of Workability (Landolt) for evaluating workability, and the Test of Color (Lüscher). The social intelligence and workability (a measure of worker reliability and accuracy) scores in the unemployed are significantly lower than those of the employed. The unemployed present the following specifities in their attitude to work. The length of unemployment and the level of stress affect the workability of individuals as well as their attitude to work

Onoshchenko, Olga. "Tackling the informal economy in Ukraine." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2858/.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of informal work and informal networks (blat) in Ukraine is long-standing. Until now, research on the informal economy in Ukraine has largely focused on measuring its size rather than exploring the nature and motives of the people engaged in informal activities. Moreover, few studies in relation to Ukraine have sought to evaluate the validity of the contrasting theorisations of the informal economy and no studies in Ukraine have considered the issue of contemporary informal networks (blat). The intention of this thesis is to fill these gaps. In doing so, the objective is to start to resolve the lack of knowledge on the nature of the informal economy which leads to ineffective and even destructive policy approaches to tackling it. The aim of this thesis is to critically evaluate the existing theorisations of the informal economy and their applicability to Ukrainian society in order to start to enable a move towards developing policy solutions for tackling the informal economy. To achieve this aim, a mixed methods approach is adopted in this thesis. The survey, consisting of 200 semi-structured interviews, was carried out in an urban area of Ukraine – the city of Mykolayiv. The data collected was analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the survey affirm that informal activities are diverse in nature and are driven by a variety of motives. Thus, no single existing theory fully explains the informal economy in Ukraine; instead, there is evidence to support each theory of the informal economy. As such, policy responses need to be tailored in order to effectively deal with the challenges faced by the different types of informal activity. Such a response is more likely to result in the formalisation of such activities by removing the barriers to formalisation and nurturing fledgling business activities rather than simply trying to eradicate them.

Abstract:
Corruption has flourished in Ukraine for years, making Ukraine one of the most corrupt countries in Europe. However, since the Maidan in 2014, Ukraine has turned its political course towards the west, taken several steps in order to tackle corruption and tightened its cooperation with the European Union. The purpose of this research is to assess what measures has the EU undertaken between 2014-2018 to help Ukraine in its aspiration to combat corruption and to achieve rule of law. This research has found out that the EU has supported Ukraine to tackle corruption by suggesting changes and reforms with the aim to foster overall development, while simultaneously keeping in mind the anti-corruption priority. One significant outcome of the fight against corruption has been the creation of NABU, the National Anticorruption Bureau of Ukraine, which is today the central element in the anti-corruption campaign. Secondly, the EU has backed Ukraine economically, and thirdly, the EU has granted visa liberation for Ukrainian citizens, which is contributing to the broader cooperation between Ukraine and the EU. In the theoretical scale, this study found out that there is an ongoing identity building, whereas Ukraine seeks to exclude corruption as a societal norm and obtain the values of the EU instead.

Kaurinkoski, Kira. Aix-Marseille 1, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1998AIX10002.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study on the collective identities of the donbass greeks, the objective is to define ethnic and territorial units of belonging by choosing a certain number of references that have an emblematic value for their carriers. This study is based on written sources and and on ethnographic fieldwork that i have carried out in the russophone region of doneck in south- eastern ukraine. In the fhe first part of this study i talk about aspects that build up the historical and cultural background of the donbass greeks. The first chapter is on the mode of living, clothing and cuisine of greeks but also russians and ukrainians of donbass. The second chapter deals with ritual and religious practice. In it i first briefly discuss belief and the religious renaissance that is taking place in ukraine at present. Thereafter, i try to analyse rites and patterns of behaviour connected with birth, marriage and death. I also discuss the celebration of holidays. The third chapter is on kinship structure and on social behaviour and values. The fourth chapter is an evaluation of the linguistic situation in the donbass. In it i discuss linguistic practice and representation among the donbass greeks and ukrainians taking into account the everyday and the symbolic value they attach to russian, ukrainian and greek languages. The second part of this thesis (chapters 5 and 6) is on representations and revendications of identities. In the fifth chapter i discuss otherness and show how the donbass greeks perceive the soviet leaders as well as some of the most important events of twentieth century russian history. In the last chapter i try to show how the donbass greeks perceve and live their ethnic identity today. Even though it is the context of today that is in the focus of my study, i also try to show how and why the various material, religious, social, linguistic and other patterns of behaviour have changed during the twentieth century

Onoufriitchouk, Vadim. Nice, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998NICE0009.

Full text
Abstract:
At the outset of its independence, in 1991. The Ukraine stood amongst the most fortunate eastern European countries. This being due to their attractiveness to the potential favour of international investors. Despite these advantages, which were mostly fiscal and were conferred upon such investors in order to encourage their insertion into the Ukraine, the results hoped for were not produced. The inexperience of the legislature in such matters. The inherent legal instability and the all too frequent intervention of the state, contributed to the crafling of a negative reputation for the country. Conventional means being unable to match the expectations of these investors meant that the Ukraine has been classified as the highly political risk country. The Ukraine fully understands the need to attract investment in order to contribute to the development of the country. In order to counter the risks which create uncertainty on a daily basis for the foreign investor, investment guarantee mechanisms exist in a number of states for the purpose of encouraging and protecting. Should the occasion arise, investment beyond the national boundary. The study of these traditional mechanisms nevertheless demonstrate that they are not sufficiently adapted to respond to the anxieties of operators in central and eastern European countries (CEEC) - where bad risk triumphs over good. The leading international financial institutions have, as a result, largely contributed to the establishment of new mechanisms which guarantee outward foreign investment, and which have the objective of fulfilling to a much greater degree the expectations of those operators who wish to invest in external markets. Accordingly, the GAU (garantee administration unit) organization was created, of which the coverage of political risk and indemnity procedures, appear to operate in a credible and efficient manner, thus, this has been recommended in favour of the Ukraine and Moldavia

Abstract:
Our study produced new empirical results on the establishment of the new system of local self-government in Ukraine : observations on historical evolution of the system of local self-government in Ukraine, remarks on guidelines of the administrative and territorial reform, an analysis of the judicial status, competences and resources of the territorial communities. Results of the research demonstrate the development of local and regional democracy to be a key element for the successful realisation of democratic reforms in Ukraine. The reform of local administration foresees profound institutional changes in the organisation of public power in Ukraine: more precise distribution of the competences between the central power and different levels of local authorities, clarification in the national legislation of the status of “gromada”, “raïon” and “oblast”, provision of financial resources to territorial communities for realisation of the new functions, elaboration of the new strategy of training for local authorities' staff to be more productive in their activity and to ensure better the demands of citizens

Abstract:
When Ukraine was an USSR member, Ukrainian classification experts used the third Russian UDC edition. After Ukraine obtained independence, the need emerged for a national UDC version, in Ukrainian language. Following detailed study and critical analysis of advantages and disadvantages of the major classifications used in Ukraine and worldwide in the 20th century, the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) was chosen because of its international status, wide distribution and accumulated experience concerning its use. The Vidrodzhennya international fund financed the project of a UDC translation and publishing in Ukrainian.

Abstract:

The Ukraine crisis underway since November 2013 is a significant occurrence in a greater debate over what norms will prevail in the European—and global—security environment. The roots of the crisis lie in two-and-a-half decades of competition for influence in Ukraine by the European Union and the Russian Federation. The competition between Russia and the EU over Ukraine has evolved significantly since Ukraine became independent in 1991. This thesis shows that the European Union’s level of awareness of and competition with Russia for influence in Ukraine has significantly grown. Ukraine’s position in EU diplomacy has grown from secondary status to being regarded as a critical interest across EU institutions and member state governments. While Russian efforts to establish dominant influence in Ukraine have also intensified, Moscow’s interest in Ukraine has been consistently high. The findings of this thesis indicate that the European Union has not given up on Ukraine nor accepted the legitimacy of a Russian sphere of influence in post-Soviet states. Competition between Russia and the European Union over Ukraine is likely to intensify and remain at a high level for the foreseeable future.

Abstract:
Nikita Khrushchev is mainly known in the western countries as the one who has allowed a relative relief of the dictatorship thanks to the destalinization process. This opinion is also persistent in the former countries of the USSR. Indeed when Khrushchev seizes power, he wishes to proceed with many ambitious reforms in various areas. Nevertheless, he remains a convinced communist who tries this way to give a new start to the soviet ideological adventure. The denunciation of the crimes of Stalin during the XXth Congress of the Soviet Union Communist Party (SUCP) opens path to some intellectual and artistic pluralism often called « unfreezing ». Furthermore, the wills of the first secretary will lead to a policy of unexpected and unbalancing politic and economic reforms. But in fact the destalinization times will also be times of disappointments, especially for the Ukrainians. Indeed Ukraine will have a special place in the antireligious campaign, as one of the healthiest strongholds of the religious life of the Soviet Union. Since the western regions had not suffered the repression of the thirties, they were a singular phenomenon in the Soviet Union with their vivid religious life and their refusal to become uniformly orthodox. Thus the antireligious campaign of Khrushchev is one of the poorly known sides of the policy of Stalin’s successor. The behaviour of the new first secretary as regards the religions will be indeed even harsher than the one of Stalin (the former were-be priest). Stalin had made concessions to the churches after 1943; but as soon as 1958, few years after Khrushchev’s rise to power, the antireligious propaganda becomes strong and efficient again

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates patterns of financial exchange in Ukrainian couples. While previous studies of money management focus on the physical organization of money in the home—e.g. pooled, independent, partially pooled—I focus on the meaning of money in exchange and explore how patterns of exchange become legitimized in the home. Drawing on data from 110 in-depth interviews with married and cohabiting individuals, I advance a theory of gendered money and demonstrate how couples give special symbolic meaning to men’s money in domestic exchanges. Unlike earlier perspectives on gender and money such as resource theories and gender performance, this framework acknowledges money as a prop and tool that couples use to construct gender boundaries and signal normalcy in the marital relationship. Integrating concepts from economic sociology with Hochschild’s insights on the symbolism of domestic labor, I find that Ukrainians use money as a token and symbol of value, not as a commodity with which to obtain desired outcomes. By spending men’s money on "necessary" items and avoiding accessing women’s money in the household, couples construct men’s money as both visible and valuable while rendering women’s money non-fungible. Partners adopt the financial practices that feel comfortable and gender-appropriate, even when women earn more than their husbands. Building on this framework of gendered money, I problematize the concept of a gender "ideology" by arguing that gender beliefs do not always drive financial practices in ways anticipated by gender scholars. Using Swidler's toolkit theory of culture to better understand the duality of gender beliefs and gender structures, I argue that not all gender beliefs can be conceptualized as "ideological." I explore how many of my respondents were inconsistent in the ways they discussed gender and fairness in the home. These inconsistencies provide evidence that individuals can be highly flexible in the ways they legitimize their domestic exchanges. This flexibility creates dilemmas for individuals who desire to change their strategies of action over time. Specifically, I give examples of women’s thwarted desires—respondents who wanted to align their practices with their beliefs but could not due to the lack of cooperation from their partner. I conclude that practices need not always match articulated beliefs; moreover, particular patterns of exchange are culturally entrenched and difficult to displace. Lastly, I analyze how money and labor are symbolically exchanged in the home. I argue that power asymmetries occur when one partner must exert more labor to engage in an otherwise “equal” exchange with their partner.

Abstract:
