ABSTRACT The oil tanker Sea Empress spilled more than 72,000 tons (23 million U.S. gallons) of crude oil when she grounded at Milford Haven, United Kingdom, on February 15, 1996. The response at sea by the U.K. government through the Coastguard Agency's Marine Pollution Control Unit involved aerial surveillance, the spraying of dispersants from aircraft, and the recovery of several thousand tons of oil from the sea surface. This paper by the overall commander presents an overview of the incident and the response operation at sea.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT A precautionary fishery closure area was established following the Sea Empress oil spill in 1996, and the restrictions progressively removed as contamination declined. All controls had been removed by September 1997, approximately 19 months after the initial grounding of the tanker. In this paper the authors outline the criteria by which the residual contamination was assessed, in the absence of standards or guideline values for PAH levels in U.K. legislation. The limitations of this approach in respect to contamination in this area from sources other than the Sea Empress, and the background levels of contamination by PAHs in shellfish production areas elsewhere in England and Wales, are discussed.

ABSTRACT The tanker Sea Empress spilled approximately 72,000 tons of light crude oil from the Forties field (North Sea) and 360 tons of heavy fuel oil at the mouth of Milford Haven in west Wales in February 1996. The scale of the spillage made it necessary to impose closure orders on both commercial and recreational fishing in adjacent coastal waters and rivers. A monitoring program was initiated both to follow the spread of oil and its uptake by fish and shellfish and to provide information with which to assess human health risks. In this paper we report the results of monitoring in both commercial and noncommercial stocks offish and shellfish in the first 6 months following the grounding.

Abstract:
The ‘Sea Empress’ oil tanker grounded outside Milford Haven (Wales, UK) in February 1996, spilling ~70,000 tonnes of crude oil and contaminating over 100 km of coastline, causing mass mortalities and standings of at least 11 mollusc species. Intensive field monitoring commenced after the spill, examining immunity and hydrocarbon levels in the mussel, Mytilus edulis (Mollusca: Bivalvia), a commercially-harvested species which can accumulate contaminants. Comparisons of mussels from oiled and reference sites revealed significant modulations in cell-mediated immunity. Elevations in blood cell (haemocyte) numbers and decreases in superoxide generation and phagocytosis were identified in contaminated animals. The immune response of contaminated mussels gradually improved and generally showed no significant differences compared with clean mussels after 11 weeks. By then, total hydrocarbon content in contaminated mussels had declined by 70–90%, while polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content had decreased by over 90%.

Abstract:
On the evening of 15 February 1996, the 147,000 tonne tanker Sea Empress ran aground on rocks at the entrance to Milford Haven harbour in south-west Wales. (The ship’s pilot, it later emerged, had been making his first ever solo attempt at the manoeuvre.) Over the next week, 72,000 tonnes of crude oil and 360 tonnes of heavy fuel oil seeped from the wreck into the sea, contaminating 200 kilometres of the Welsh coastline, much of it part of the exceptionally beautiful and ecologically diverse Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. More than 50,000 birds were killed or injured. The devastating effects of the Sea Empress disaster weren’t confined, however, to the flora and fauna of the National Park. In the wake of the oil spill, local people found themselves experiencing a range of health problems, including headaches, nausea, and skin irritation. And yet when we look closely at these accounts, something curious emerges. The first symptoms were reported as early as the first day of the incident. But at that stage very little oil had escaped from the wrecked tanker. Whatever was causing these first headaches and feelings of nausea, it wasn’t the Sea Empress. Indeed, people living on stretches of the coast that were entirely unaffected by the spill also complained of symptoms. How do we explain physical symptoms without an obvious physical cause? In the case of the Sea Empress disaster, it’s likely that they were the direct result of anxiety. It’s an established formula. Take one catastrophe, add extensive media coverage, and watch public anxiety grow. Think back, for example, to the anthrax scares that swept the US in September and October 2001. During these weeks, letters containing anthrax spores were sent to a number of senators and media organizations. Five people died and a further seventeen were also infected. (To date, the case is still unsolved.) With anxiety in the US already ratcheted to unprecedented levels by the September 11 attacks, hundreds of people soon began reporting that they too had been the victims of anthrax poisoning, with many complaining of symptoms.

Introdução: A Mata Branca Júnior Soluções ambientais é uma empresa júnior filiada ao movimento empresas júniores. Ela é composta por estudantes do curso de ciências biológicas da Universidade Federal do Ceará e executa projetos e serviços voltados para o crescimento profissional de seus membros, sempre voltados para as áreas de atuação do biólogo. Dentre suas atividades está o Plano de Gerenciamento de Resíduos de Serviços de Saúde (PGRSS), documento que detalha as técnicas e ações de manejo dos resíduos sólidos produzidos a partir do atendimento à saúde humana ou animal. Objetivo: O projeto objetivou a qualificação dos membros da equipe gestora através de um conjunto de procedimentos elaborados nas etapas de seu planejamento estratégico, envolvendo o gerenciamento de resíduos de saúde. Materiais e Métodos: Obedecendo às recomendações e obrigações de biossegurança condizentes ao período atual, com a presença de no máximo 2 membros da equipe e o auxílio de EPIs, realizou-se uma visita técnica, mediante contato com o cliente, ao estabelecimento contratante. Através de uma ficha de campo para diagnóstico, foram coletadas informações a respeito do funcionamento do local investigado. Estes dados foram analisados criteriosamente pela comissão e pelo responsável técnico, que elaborou, revisou e assinou o PGRSS. O plano foi entregue ao contratante, que também recebeu uma capacitação por meio de um POP e apresentação construída pela equipe. O contato pós-serviço foi realizado para monitoramento superficial das atividades acordadas no plano. Resultados: A equipe gestora envolvida nas atividades do projeto adquiriu conhecimento profissional em consultoria e licenciamento ambiental, bem como o próprio gerenciamento de resíduos sólidos, uma vez que receberam o amparo de materiais complementares e capacitações para a execução das etapas do serviço. Conclusão: Esta atividade porta um valor ecológico importante, já que a gestão correta desses materiais mitiga impactos posteriores ao meio ambiente, como a contaminação de corpos hídricos, solo e ar pelo derramamento de fluidos poluentes, como o chorume, e emissão de gases, como metano; o que tange a responsabilidade socioambiental inerente à empresa júnior. Além disso, mostrou ser uma ferramenta auxiliadora na capacitação de membros, ajudando na sua formação e construção profissional.MATA BRANCA JR.

Abstract:
O processo de Integração Contínua (IC) permite avanços nos produtos de software no que tange à qualidade, disponibilidade e entrega. A IC é normalmente associada às linguagens mais comuns de mercado como Java e C#, porém seus benefícios não estão necessariamente restritos à estas linguagens. Esta pesquisa-ação mostra a implantação de IC num contexto de desenvolvimento de software na linguagem de programação Advanced Business Application Program (ABAP), num produto desenvolvido para o mercado brasileiro por uma empresa de Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). Os resultados mostraram que mesmo com a IC não implementada em sua totalidade, resultados positivos consistentes puderam ser alcançados, tais como sistema de feedback mais eficiente e uma redução no percentual de chamados de clientes causados por bugs.

Motivada pelo interesse em realizar previsões acerca do cumprimento dos municípios catarinenses no que tange às metas determinadas pela Lei de Responsabilidade Fiscal, a presente pesquisa, de caráter aplicado, quantitativo e com abordagem indutiva, fez uso de técnicas de mineração de dados e análise de regressão para desenvolver seu objeto, que considerou a receita corrente líquida como variável de estudo e comparação estatística, com o emprego de algoritmos de previsão. As técnicas selecionadas evidenciaram que os gastos com pessoal dos executivos é próximo de 50% e que, dentre os algoritmos analisados, a melhor abordagem foi obtida pelo RandomForest, que apresentou um erro absoluto relativo de 5,1904%. Tais resultados permitiram demonstrar que é viável prever se um município irá extrapolar as metas impostas pela lei, informação que condiciona os Tribunais de Contas a atuar de forma pró-ativa, tornando mais efetivas as atividades de fiscalização.

Abstract:
Introdução: O presente trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento e validação de uma plataforma online sobre a utilização da gamificação na disciplina de educação física. A pesquisa foi motivada pela questão de que as aulas de educação física raramente utilizam tecnologias digitais se comparadas com outras disciplinas, permanecendo no mesmo perfil de décadas anteriores. Objetivo: Uma das causas do desinteresse dos estudantes da nova geração por atividades físicas pode estar ligada ao fato da imersão desses adolescentes no mundo digital, sendo a responsável pelo aumento do sedentarismo. Material e métodos: Foram realizados estudos com o intuito de desenvolver uma plataforma digital que seja um guia para os professores de educação física que desejarem aderir a tecnologia de games aplicada na educação à distância, buscando atender os estudantes. O desenvolvimento da plataforma foi baseado nas pesquisas qualitativas com professores da área visando atender o mais próximo das necessidades, bem como a adequação do produto. O desenvolvimento da plataforma foi por meio do emprego da metodologia Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA). O desenvolvimento da plataforma focou na maximização de sua usabilidade e acessibilidade, proporcionando a maior variedade de utilizadores. Resultados: O projeto resultou em uma plataforma online que apresenta notícias, casos de aplicações da gamificação na educação e saúde, em um conteúdo educacional sobre games que tem como objetivo informar e orientar professores de Educação Física na utilização em sala de aula. Conclusão: Os esforços desta pesquisa tiveram como foco a utilização da tecnologia de jogos digitais com a captura de movimentos pertinentes às práticas corporais visando a inclusão da nova geração de alunos na educação física. Sendo aplicada como modelo já retornou resultados satisfatórios no que tange o retorno de alguns alunos às atividades físicas de forma motivadora.
