Abstract:
We investigate the effect of domestic armed violence brought about by political instability on the geography of distance frictions in freight mobility and the resulting differential access of regions to global markets. The Colombian transportation system has been found to be impeded by deficiencies in landside transport infrastructure and institutions, and by fragmented political environments. The micro-level analysis of U.S.-bounded export shipping records corroborates that export freight shipping from inland regions is re-routed to avoid exposures to domestic armed violence despite greatly e

This paper addresses latency issues related to publicly available port-level commodity tonnage reports. Predicting commodity tonnage at the port-level, near real time vessel tracking data is used with historical WCS with a machine learning model. Commodity throughput is derived from WCS data which is released publicly approximately two years after collection. This latency presents a challenge for short-term planning and other operational uses. This study leverages near real time vessel tracking data from the AIS data set. This study evaluates the demand for truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways with owner–operator truck drivers. The study implemented the stated preference survey method to estimate the value placed by drivers on time, reliability, and safety measures using various scenarios geared towards assessing those values. The project team met face-to-face with owner- operator truck drivers near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to understand the drivers’ perspectives regarding truck-only toll lanes on Southern California freeways. A data set containing 31 survey responses is obtained

As we enter the next era of autonomous driving, robo-vehicles (which serve as low-cost and fully compliant drivers) are replacing conventional chauffeured services in the mobility market. During just the last few years, companies like Waymo Inc. and Cruise Inc. have already offered fully driverless robo-taxi services to the general public in cities like Phoenix and San Francisco. The rapid evolution of autonomous vehicles is anticipated to reshape the shared mobility market very soon. This project aims to address the following open questions. At the operational level, how should modular units

Pipeline transmission of liquids, although highly cost effective relative to other means of liquid transport (e.g., on-highway freight vehicles or trains), still encumbers costs with opportunities for improvement. Liquid pumps, serving as the prime mover for liquids in a pipeline, are a chief operating expense for pipeline transmission. A large and diverse set of pump characteristics - both in terms of style, motive force, and age -make it difficult to identify technologies that result in substantial cost savings for the owner / operator of liquid pipeline systems. Thus, characterizing and cla
